But doubts about the bill, which was only released last week, have expanded from the pair to more mainstream Coalition MPs, setting up the meeting as a test of the opposition leader’s authority after he hauled his party room into line on abortion earlier this month. On Sunday night, the MPs were informed Monday’s meeting was cancelled, with the conversation to take place on Tuesday as part of the Coalition’s party room meeting. The Coalition leadership remains confident of overwhelming support for the bill inside the party, according to several opposition sources speaking anonymously about internal dynamics. Dutton, whose office declined to comment, plans to hear out his concerned colleagues but ultimately expects the party to back the bill, allowing it to pass parliament this week. The opposition rode a wave of conservative and libertarian campaigning against Labor’s misinformation bill in recent months before the government dropped its plan to crack down on falsehoods online on Sunday. Some of the groups and people behind that campaign, including One Nation, the Libertarian Party and former Coalition MPs George Christensen and Craig Kelly, have launched an email crusade about the social media age barrier that has resulted in complaints flooding into MPs inboxes. They endorse the view of X owner Elon Musk, who wrote on the platform last month that the ban “seems like a backdoor way to control access to the internet by all Australians” because it could require users to prove their identities before accessing major online services. Communications Minister Michelle Rowland was asked about the need to hand over ID in a Labor caucus meeting last week and said her laws would not force people to give ID documents to social media giants, dismissing the prospect as a right-wing scare campaign. However, the government has not announced the technology that would be used to prove a user’s age. ‘A red flag’ LNP MP Garth Hamilton said Labor had rushed the legislation and sent mixed signals about details such as which platforms would be included. The Wiggles successfully lobbied to allow YouTube to remain while Snapchat will be banned, though both apps now also have a TikTok-style feed of clips. “The tests for this bill are that it should not be a proxy for digital ID [to be required to access the internet] and that it actually responds to parents’ needs,” Hamilton said.“I fully agree with Peter Dutton’s concerns about the impacts of social media, and they are long-held. One book he recommended on bookworm site Goodreads was How To Change Your Mind: The New Science of Psychedelics. This deeply sinister case began to unfurl on December 2 when Brian Thompson — CEO of medical insurer UnitedHealthcare — travelled from his home in Minnesota to New York for a company conference. Known as BT, Thompson, 50, had risen up the corporate ranks after a childhood in the small Midwest farming town of Jewell, Iowa. The son of a grain elevator operator, he was a gifted high school pupil who topped his class at his home state’s university. Heather Holm, superintendent of the South Hamilton Community School District said: “He was a model student.” His glittering academic record would lead to a career in accountancy before becoming CEO of UnitedHealthcare — the largest health insurer in the US. Steve Nelson, a former executive at the firm, said of Thompson: “He was the smartest guy in the room, but somehow not in an annoying way.” Under Brian’s helm, UnitedHealthcare had revenues of around £220billion last year and provided health coverage for more than 50 million in America’s for-profit system. Yet the company has faced criticism over denying policyholders’ claims. Earlier this year, 11 protesters were arrested outside the firm’s Minnesota headquarters protesting over alleged improper insurance denials. On December 4, at 6.45am, Brian strolled towards the Hilton Hotel close to New York’s famous Times Square where he was due to give a talk to investors and analysts. Emerging from the shadows, a masked figure in black raised a 9mm handgun with a silencer and unleashed a fatal volley of shots. The murderer escaped on an ebike via nearby Central Park. Three bullet casings found at the crime scene were engraved with the words “deny” “depose” and “defend”. They echoed the phrase “delay, deny, defend” used to describe allegations levelled at insurers who avoid payouts. Cops scoured CCTV while police dogs , drones and divers searched Central Park and its lake. Detectives were hopeful of retrieving DNA from a water bottle discarded at the murder scene. Police managed to retrieve CCTV images of the suspect — one when he removed his mask while flirting with a receptionist at a Manhattan hostel — and another from inside a cab. We knew that was our guy.” Officers say they discovered Mangione with fake ID, a gun similar to the one seen in CCTV footage of the killing and a manifesto lambasting the healthcare industry. The 262-word handwritten note condemned firms that “continue to abuse our country for immense profit because the American public has allowed them to get away with it.” Mangione’s note added: “To save you a lengthy investigation , I state plainly that I wasn’t working with anyone. "These parasites had it coming. I do apologize for any strife and trauma, but it had to be done.” The firearm that Mangione was allegedly carrying was an unlicensed “ghost gun”, possibly produced by a 3D printer. On Monday he was charged with murder. The events this week are a lifetime away from Mangione’s childhood in Maryland. Brought up in a quiet cul-de-sac on the outskirts of Baltimore, his Italian-American family are well-known in the community. A tech geek, Magione went on to the Ivy League University of Pennsylvania to study computer science. After college, he worked for or had internships with several tech companies. In 2022, Magione had set up home in a “co-living” space in Honolulu, Hawaii, called Surfbreak that caters to remote workers. Its founder RJ Martin said: “We look for people who are looking to give back. And he fit the bill .” RJ added that Mangione was suffering from a painful back problem that meant it “wasn’t possible” for him to have sex. Mangione left Hawaii after six months to return to the East Coast, telling RJ he was planning to see his doctor. The alleged assassin would return to Hawaii in summer of 2023. In August of that year, RJ sent Mangione a text asking how he was doing. In reply he sent back pictures of his back surgery. RJ revealed: “It looked heinous, with just giant screws going into his spine.” Asked how he was feeling, Mangione replied: “So, long story.” The pair last communicated in April, after which RJ’s texts remained unanswered. A social media post for Mangione from another friend in October said: “Nobody has heard from you in months.” His family reported him missing in November. He was carrying a three-page manifesto, fake IDs, and a gun similar to the one used in Thompson's murder.The National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA) has explained that before any GM food or material is released in the country, it undergoes strict regulatory procedures and scientific scrutiny. This follows the recent alarm raised by critics of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) over the safety of GM foods. The Director General of NBMA, Dr Agnes Yemisi Asagbra while addressing journalists recently, said the mandate of the Agency is to prioritize the safety of Nigerians and the environment. “Every Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) approved by our Agency undergoes rigorous scientific scrutiny and strict regulatory procedures to ensure it meets the highest safety standards. “Our regulatory framework is designed to protect you, our citizens the environment and our diverse biodiversity from any potential harm”, she said. Dr Asagbra noted that the negative statements circulating are not only misleading but lack credible scientific backing. She said the critics of the technology aim to spread fear and misinformation. “We ask these organizations to present verifiable scientific evidence for their claims”, she added. Furthermore, the NBMA Boss stated that the Agency relies on sound scientific research and internationally recognized protocols to make informed decisions. “Our mandate is to protect the health of Nigerians and the environment, and we will not compromise on this. “It is important for the public to understand that without the NBMA, Nigeria could become a dumping ground for unregulated and potentially harmful GMOs and products of biotechnology “Our Agency is your shield against such dangers, ensuring that only safe and beneficial biotechnology products enter our market. “Our goal is to foster innovation in a safe and regulated manner, promoting scientific advancements that can improve food security and contribute to sustainable agriculture”, she said. In its fall economic update Monday, the Liberal government said it would invest in cutting-edge technology for law enforcement, so that only people who are eligible to remain in Canada do so. The money, to be spread over six fiscal years, is earmarked for the RCMP, Public Safety Canada, the Canada Border Services Agency and the cyberspies at the Communications Security Establishment. RCMP members enforce laws between official points of entry and investigate criminal activities related to the border. National Police Federation president Brian Sauvé says members have been protecting the border with limited resources, and the new money will allow them to continue delivering on their mandate.
