INDIANAPOLIS -- There's more than just school pride and bragging rights to all that bellyaching over who might be in and who might be out of college football 's first 12-team playoff. Try the more than $115 million that will be spread across the conferences at the end of the season, all depending on who gets in and which teams go the farthest. According to the College Football Playoff website , the 12 teams simply making the bracket earn their conferences $4 million each. Another $4 million goes to conferences whose teams get into the quarterfinals. Then, there's $6 million more for teams that make the semifinals and another $6 million for those who play for the title. Most of this bonanza comes courtesy of ESPN, which is forking over $1.3 billion a year to televise the new postseason. A lot of that money is already earmarked — more goes to the Big Ten and Southeastern Conference than the Big 12 or Atlantic Coast — but a lot is up for grabs in the 11 games that will play out between the opening round on Dec. 20 and the final on Jan. 20. In all, the teams that make the title game will bring $20 million to their conferences, all of which distribute that money, along with billions in TV revenue and other sources, in different ways. In fiscal 2022-23, the Big Ten, for instance, reported revenue of nearly $880 million and distributed about $60.5 million to most of its members. This falls under a category of personal protective equipment (PPE) known as bump caps . This voluntary industry consensus standard, designated as ISEA 100, has recently received approval from ISEA committee members and is currently undergoing a formal review process. Upon finalization, release, and adoption, this standard will provide manufacturers with a consistent guideline for classification, test procedures, and performance requirements for bump caps. It is anticipated that the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) will subsequently adopt the safety standard in conjunction with ISEA, resulting in the designation ANSI/ISEA 100. There is a critical gap in workplace head protection: the risk of bumps, scrapes, and cuts from low ceilings, overhead objects, or tight spaces in settings where traditional hard hats or safety helmets are not required or even practical. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), injuries to the head account for roughly 78,000 injuries resulting in at least one day away from work every year in the private sector. (BLS reported 156,000 in the two-year period from 2021-22). Of those, a mere 7.2% occurred in construction, where hard hats are most likely being worn. Meanwhile, service workers (who may or may not be wearing hard hats) account for 22.1% of head injuries. Transportation and material moving make up another 20.6%. "And those workers (in transportation and material moving) are likely not wearing hard hats or even bump caps," says Ergodyne President and ISEA Trustee Greg Schrab. Schrab has led the effort from ISEA's Head Protection Group in developing the standard. "These two occupational sectors have more than six times the amount of head injuries than construction... so obviously the need for a safety solution is there." To date, there had not been a US standard for bump cap manufacturers to reference. ANSI/ISEA Z89.1-2014 (R2019) – American National Standard for Industrial Head Protection is the current edition of the American National Standard for hard hats and does not cover bump caps. "When a standard is referenced, it is usually (the European bump cap standard) EN812," says Schrab. "It's serviceable as a reference in the absence of a US standard, but it has its limitations." Most notably, Schrab elaborates, it doesn't address the concept of universal bump cap inserts . Bump cap inserts continue to grow in popularity as they allow wearers to fortify just about any type of headwear with lightweight, relatively unobtrusive impact protection–from baseball caps to winter beanies to wide-brimmed sun hats. ISEA 100 addresses this by adding various testing and language clarity that allows for inserts to meet the standard. ISEA 100, once published, will act as a benchmark for future bump cap development. New technology points to unexpected uses for snoRNA November 22, 2024 University of Chicago Researchers recently developed a new approach for identifying new cellular RNA targets of snoRNAs. They uncovered thousands of previously unknown targets for snoRNAs in human cells and mouse brain tissues, including many that serve functions other than guiding rRNA modifications. Small nucleolar RNAs (snoRNAs) are a common but overlooked group of guide RNA molecules that steer chemical modifications to cellular ribosomal RNA (rRNA) targets, like an usher showing someone to their seat in a theater. Researchers from the University of Chicago recently developed a new approach for identifying new cellular RNA targets of snoRNAs. They uncovered thousands of previously unknown targets for snoRNAs in human cells and mouse brain tissues, including many that serve functions other than guiding rRNA modifications. Some of the newly discovered interactions with messenger RNA (mRNA) facilitate protein secretion, an important cellular process that could be harnessed for potential therapeutics and biotechnology applications. "Once you see so many targets for these snoRNAs, you realize there's a lot more to be understood," said Chuan He, PhD, John T. Wilson Distinguished Service Professor of Chemistry and Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Chicago and co-senior author of the paper. "We already see that they play a role in protein secretion, which has major implications for physiology, and it suggests a path forward to study hundreds of other snoRNAs." The paper, "SnoRNA-facilitated protein secretion revealed by transcriptome-wide snoRNA target identification," was published in November 2024 in the journal Cell. A molecular glue for protein secretion There are more than 1,000 known genes for encoding snoRNAs in the human genome, but scientists have only pinpointed the RNA targets for about 300 of them. These targets mostly involve guiding modifications for ribosomal RNA and small nuclear RNA involved in mRNA splicing. In the decades since snoRNAs were first discovered, researchers largely left the remaining 700 alone, assuming they performed similar functions. However, unlike other guide RNA molecules such as microRNAs that are all the same length, snoRNAs vary greatly in their length from 50-250 residues, suggesting that they can do many different things. Over the past 12 years, He's lab has developed several biochemical and sequencing techniques for studying transcription, DNA modifications, and RNA modifications. In the new study, He worked with co-senior author Tao Pan, PhD, Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, to test a new tool called "snoKARR-seq" that links snoRNAs with their target binding RNAs. Bei Liu, PhD, a Chicago Fellow postdoctoral scholar who is co-mentored by He and Pan, led the project. "Chuan's lab developed this killer technology to look at exactly what RNA each snoRNA is interacting with at the transcriptome level," Pan said. "Now there's a lot of open space for understanding comprehensively what these 1,000 human genes [that encode snoRNAs] are doing." Most of the newly discovered snoRNA targets do not overlap with the known RNA modification sites, suggesting that snoRNAs may have a much broader function in cells. One unexpected discovery was that a snoRNA called SNORA73 interacts with mRNAs that encode secreted proteins and cell membrane proteins. Protein secretion is a fundamental biological process by which proteins are transported from a cell into the extracellular space, which is crucial for various functions, including communication between cells, immune responses, and digestion. The researchers saw that SNORA73 acts as a "molecular glue" between the mRNA and the protein synthesis machinery that helps facilitate this process. Further analysis of how SNORA73 binds with mRNA suggested that synthetic snoRNA sequences can be engineered to affect protein secretion. The researchers tested this hypothesis by tweaking a green fluorescent protein (GFP) reporter to interact with SNORA73 . GFPs are often introduced in cells to make them glow under certain conditions so scientists can see the effects of experiments. When the researchers expressed SNORA73 genes with the engineered GFP that can be secreted from cells, it increased protein secretion by 30 to 50% over controls. These experiments showed that they could make use of the snoRNA machinery to manipulate the secretion of a given protein, which could be useful for developing therapeutics. For example, if a human disease involves a deficiency of secreted proteins, then bioengineers could hijack the system to deliver artificial snoRNAs to increase secretion of that protein. 'The field is wide open' While the technology for synthesizing and delivering snoRNAs to the right locations isn't quite ready yet, both He and Pan feel confident those challenges can be solved since it builds upon previous advances in technology using other forms of RNA. They also believe that since snoRNAs are specific to cell types, they could have much more diverse functions -- and therapeutic possibilities -- elsewhere. "Think about neuronal cells, stem cells, or cancer cells. There are just so many cell types one can study. So, I think the field is wide open," He said. "Tao and I have been working together for more than 15 years, and it's a great showcase of collaboration between the Biological Sciences Division and Physical Sciences Division at UChicago. A 7.0 magnitude earthquake shook a large area of Northern California on Thursday, knocking items off grocery store shelves, sending children scrambling under desks and prompting a brief for 5.3 million people along the U.S. West Coast. The quake struck at 10:44 a.m. west of Ferndale, a small city in coastal Humboldt County, about 130 miles (209 km) from the Oregon border, the U.S. Geological Survey said. It was felt as far south as San Francisco, some 270 miles (435 km) away, where residents felt a rolling motion for several seconds. It was followed by multiple smaller aftershocks. There were no immediate reports of major damage or injury. The tsunami warning was in effect for roughly an hour. It was issued shortly after the temblor struck and covered nearly 500 miles (805 km) of coastline, from the edge of California’s Monterey Bay north into Oregon. “It was a strong quake, our building shook, we’re fine but I have a mess to clean up right now,” said Julie Kreitzer, owner of Golden Gait Mercantile, a store packed with food, wares and souvenirs that is a main attraction in Ferndale. “We lost a lot of stuff. It’s probably worse than two years ago. I have to go, I have to try and salvage something for the holidays because it’s going to be a tough year,” Kreitzer said before hanging up. The region — known for its redwood forests, scenic mountains and the three-county Emerald Triangle’s — was struck by that left thousands of people without power and water. The northwest corner of California is the most seismically active part of the state since it’s where three tectonic plates meet, seismologist Lucy Jones said on the social media platform BlueSky. Shortly after the quake, phones in Northern California buzzed with the tsunami warning from the National Weather Service that said: “A series of powerful waves and strong currents may impact coasts near you. You are in danger. Get away from coastal waters. Move to high ground or inland now. Keep away from the coast until local officials say it is safe to return.” Numerous cities urged people to evacuate to higher ground as a precaution, including Eureka. In Santa Cruz, authorities cleared the main beach, taping off entrances with police tape. Aerial footage showed cars bumper-to-bumper heading to higher ground Thursday morning on California highways 1 and 92 in the Half Moon Bay area south of San Francisco. “I thought my axles had fallen apart,” said Valerie Starkey, a Del Norte County supervisor representing Crescent City, a town of fewer than 6,000 near the Oregon border. “That’s what I was feeling ... ‘My axles are broken now.’ I did not realize it was an earthquake.” Cindy Vosburg, the executive director for the Crescent City-Del Norte County Chamber of Commerce, said she heard alarms sound just before shaking began and the city’s cultural center downtown started to creak. “The earthquake seemed to go on for quite a few seconds. It was a rolling earthquake,” Vosburg said. “Just as it would start to subside, the building would roll again.” Vosburg, a former resident of the San Francisco Bay Area and the Central Valley, said it was the strongest earthquake she felt since the struck Northern California. Gov. Gavin Newsom said he has signed off on a state of emergency declaration to quickly move state resources to impacted areas along the coast. State officials were concerned about damages in the northern part of the state, Newsom said. White House Spokesperson Jeremy Edwards said President Joe Biden was briefed on the earthquake and that FEMA officials are in touch with their state and local counterparts in California and Oregon. Crews in Eureka, the biggest city in the region, were assessing if there was any major damage from the quake, Eureka Mayor Kim Bergel said. Bergel, who works as a resource aid at a middle school, said lights were swaying and everyone got under desks. “The kids were so great and terrified. It seemed to go back and forth for quite a long time,” she said. Some children asked, “Can I call my mom?” The students were later sent home. In nearby Arcata, students and faculty were urged to shelter in place at California State Polytechnic University, Humboldt. The campus in was not in the tsunami hazard zone and after inspections, “all utilities and building systems are normal and operational,” the university said in a statement. Humboldt County Sheriff William Honsal said residents experienced some cracks in their homes’ foundations, as well as broken glass and windows, but nothing severe. There also have been no major infrastructure problems, building collapses or roadway issues, and no major injuries or deaths have been reported, he said. Honsal said he was in his office in the 75-year-old courthouse in downtown Eureka when he felt the quake. “We’re used to it. It is known as ‘earthquake country’ up here,” he said. “It wasn’t a sharp jolt. It was a slow roller, but significant.” Michael Luna, owner of a Grocery Outlet in Eureka, said that besides a few items falling off shelves, the store on Commercial Street was unscathed by the earthquake. “We didn’t have any issues but a couple of deodorants fall off.... I think the way the earthquake rumbled this time, it was a good thing for our store because the last earthquake was a huge mess,” he said. They evacuated customers and closed their doors temporarily until officials lifted the tsunami warning, he said, rushing off the phone to attend to a growing line of customers at check-out. The San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District, known as BART, stopped traffic in all directions through the underwater tunnel between San Francisco and Oakland, and the San Francisco Zoo’s visitors were evacuated. Dave Snider, tsunami warning coordinator for the Tsunami Warning Center in Alaska, said the computer models indicated that this was the type of earthquake that was unlikely to cause a tsunami and gauges that monitor waves then confirmed it, so forecasters canceled the warning. This quake was a strike-slip type of temblor that shifts more horizontally and is less prone to cause tsunamis, unlike the more vertical types, said National Weather Service tsunami program manager Corina Allen in Washington state. The California Geological Survey says the state’s shores have been struck by more than 150 tsunamis since 1800, and while most were minor, some have been destructive and deadly. Social media users sharing the image were critical of the NYPD because it appears like it was taken by a professional using “ photo shoot lighting .” Others questioned if it is real. WHAT WE FOUND The image circulating as an official NYPD mugshot of Luigi Mangione is fake and was likely created using artificial intelligence (AI). VERIFY reviewed the NYPD’s social media accounts and website and found no evidence the image was ever posted on official channels. While the NYPD has posted recent images of Mangione, such as his arrival in New York , they have not released any official booking or arrest photos. “The NYPD does not disseminate arrest photos unless we are attempting to locate an individual,” the department said in an email to VERIFY. It is unclear if Mangione even had a booking photo taken upon his arrival in New York. A 2019 New York state law prohibits the release of arrest or booking photos unless their disclosure serves as a specific law enforcement purpose. If an NYPD booking photo of Mangione exists, it likely would not have been made public. The only official booking photos of Mangione released so far were by the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections on Dec. 9 and Dec. 10 . Maria Bivens, the spokesperson with the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections, confirmed to VERIFY that the viral image was not distributed by their department. Using RevEye, a reverse image search tool, VERIFY found the viral image has never been published by credible news outlets as an official booking photo. It was also not published by the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office , which is prosecuting the case, or the Department of Justice , which brought the federal charges. There are clues that suggest the image was generated with AI. For instance, the mole on Mangione’s right cheek is misplaced in the fake image, and the white undershirt disappears entirely on one side of his neck. The Associated Press contributed to this report. Almost 200 people were rescued after a metal support structure on a ski resort gondola in Colorado cracked, reports say. The gondola at Winter Park Resort shut down after detecting “ a significant malfunction ” around 12:15 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 21, several news outlets reported. About 174 skiers and snowboarders were trapped on the gondola for roughly five hours while ski patrol lowered them 30 to 50 feet to the ground via ropes, KDVR reported. During that time, photos began circulating on social media showing a huge crack in a metal support structure on one of the towers. “Rough situation for everyone,” someone wrote with a photo they posted of the crack on Reddit. Winter Park Resort spokesperson Jen Miller told Sky-Hi News the crack was “ the source of the malfunction .” “We’re not sure why the part failed and are investigating that,” she told the outlet. Miller and the Colorado Passenger Tramway Safety Board did not immediately respond to McClatchy News’ request for information on Dec. 23. Another person posted a video of ski patrol setting up a rope system for those inside a gondola to lower safely to the ground . “Never seen this before,” Lennon Sarfati said in the caption on the post. Evacuating the gondola called for ski patrol members “climbing the gondola towers, shimmying down the cable, entering the car from the top and using a rope system to lower passengers to a team on the ground,” The Denver Post reported. There were no injuries reported during the evacuation, the outlet reported.
