Trump’s tariffs in his first term did little to alter the economy, but this time could be different

Smith's career-high 205 yards rushing carries San Diego past Morehead State 37-14EL SEGUNDO — Running back J.K. Dobbins suffered a sprained knee during the Chargers’ loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Monday night and is likely to be sidelined for Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Falcons. Coach Jim Harbaugh said Wednesday he “didn’t really know how to categorize” the injury, however. “He’s working through something with his knee,” Harbaugh added. The NFL Network, citing an unnamed source, said Dobbins would be out this week. Dobbins gained 40 yards on six carries before he was sidelined in the second quarter of the Chargers’ 30-23 loss on Monday. The Chargers turned to Gus Edwards and Hassan Haskins in Dobbins’ absence in the second half, but relied almost exclusively on their passing game after trailing 14-13 at halftime. The Chargers (7-4) rushed only five times in the second half. Overall, Edwards had nine carries for 11 yards and one touchdown and Haskins had one carry for 3 yards. Quarterback Justin Herbert rushed four times for 29 yards and one touchdown, a 5-yard scramble on the Chargers’ first drive of the game. Edwards’ 1-yard touchdown run came on their final possession. “Gus is heating up,” Harbaugh said. “Great to have him back in there.” Edwards has rushed for 206 yards and one touchdown on 63 carries in seven games, spending four games on injured reserve because of an ankle injury. Harbaugh was uncertain whether Dobbins’ injury would force him onto the injured reserve list and a minimum of a four-game layoff. “Don’t know that yet,” Harbaugh said of the possibility of Dobbins going on IR. Haskins has rushed for 26 yards and one touchdown on 13 carries, primarily playing an impactful role on special teams. Rookie Kimani Vidal, another possible replacement for Dobbins, has rushed for 44 yards on 18 carries and caught three passes for 49 yards and one touchdown. Dobbins has rushed for a team-leading 766 yards (fourth in the AFC) and eight touchdowns on 156 carries. He and Edwards signed with the Chargers in the offseason as free agents after starting their careers with the Ravens. Dobbins, 25, has had an injury-plagued career, but hasn’t missed a game so far this season. His 2023 season ended early after he sustained a torn Achilles tendon in the Ravens’ season opener. Herbert is the Chargers’ second-leading rusher with 211 yards and two touchdowns on 45 carries, most coming on scrambles away from on-rushing defenders. He set a career-high with a 38-yard scramble in the first quarter of the Chargers’ 26-8 victory over the New Orleans Saints on Oct. 27. SAMUEL (NON) UPDATE Cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. hasn’t played since the Chargers’ loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 3, placed on injured reserve because of a shoulder injury. Harbaugh declined to speculate whether Samuel would be sidelined for the remainder of the season, referring questions to Samuel. Samuel isn’t required to speak to reporters while on IR. So, his extended absence has been something of a mystery. However, his absence has opened the door for rookies Cam Hart and Tarheeb Still to move into the starting lineup. Hart is sidelined by an ankle injury that required him to wear a protective boot while watching Monday’s game from the sideline. Still has been a reliable fill-in with 33 tackles and one interception. “No, I don’t expect him back this week,” Harbaugh said of Samuel. In somewhat related moves, the Chargers placed cornerback Eli Apple on injured reserve because of a hamstring injury suffered against the Ravens. They also claimed safety Marcus Maye off of waivers. Maye played 11 games this season with the Miami Dolphins, who cut him earlier this week. Maye started three games and had 30 tackles overall for the Dolphins. CHARK’S STATUS Wide receiver DJ Chark Jr. started the season on injured reserve, but he hasn’t cracked the lineup consistently after recovering from a hip injury. Chark was active for only one game this season, the Chargers’ Nov. 10 victory over the Tennessee Titans , and he was on the field for only one snap. “The opportunity is there, the opportunity is there,” Harbaugh said of Chark, a seven-year NFL veteran. “I really like what I see. Every week, there’s an opportunity. Opportunities are guaranteed, and DJ has the license and opportunity to take advantage of that opportunity.”

Next year could be the year for reforming the federal tax system, and while we’re optimistic, we also recognize the high stakes for our country’s future. President-elect Donald Trump has pledged to extend his signature Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, a 2017 law that revised the tax code and provided some sweet breaks to favored constituents. Many of those provisions are set to expire at the end of 2025 and, given the GOP’s control of Congress and the White House, the pressure will be on to act fast. Failure to extend the measures would mean increases for most taxpayers in 2026, and they would have no one to blame but Trump & Co. During his campaign, the president-elect teased additional giveaways, vowing to eliminate taxes on tips, which doesn’t make much sense, as well as Social Security income. Apparently, all kinds of ideas are on the table, which makes the complex job of rewriting tax law even more challenging. Throughout the 2000s, the U.S. has lived far beyond its means, as both major parties embraced deficit spending. Extending the Trump tax cuts will jack up the deficit by something like $5 trillion through fiscal 2035. Sweetening the pot with additional goodies would add still more to the tab. We send our best wishes to the much-ballyhooed Department of Government Efficiency, to be run by tech bosses Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy. We’re all for eliminating waste, fraud and abuse. But given governmental instincts for self-preservation, experience teaches us to keep expectations modest. That leaves the national debt at $36 trillion and counting, threatening to increase inflation, raise interest rates, weaken the dollar and reduce the government’s capacity to make strategic investments. It’s disappointing to see the GOP , which always claimed to be the party of fiscal discipline when Democrats were in power, freeze out its deficit hawks when it controls the nation’s wallet. Trump has nominated some smart people for his economic team, including Scott Bessent for Treasury secretary, and we’re hopeful that grown-up thinking will prevail. Other Trump nominees could work against that, however. Consider Billy Long, a former GOP congressman from Missouri, whom Trump has proposed to head the Internal Revenue Service. The colorful Long is a professional auctioneer who went into business peddling a fraud-plagued tax credit after leaving public office. During his tenure, he joined other opportunists in scoring cheap political points by demonizing the IRS and pushing attention-getting tax ideas, evidently for effect . Exhibit A is Long’s effort to scrap the federal tax code, and the IRS along with it, while replacing the lost revenue with a regressive national sales tax. That would raise the cost of goods and services by anywhere from 30 to 44 cents for every dollar spent. It doesn’t take a political genius to recognize that raising the cost of a $1 item to as much as $1.44 would never work. Yet Long pushed for it, and now this unserious nominee is in line to run one of the most serious government agencies. Rather than promising to tear down the IRS for the sake of sound bites, the GOP needs to get real about change. This agency that everyone loves to hate will be crucial to carrying out its tax plan in 2025 and beyond. And, as Bessent and some of the better Trump nominees surely recognize, the GOP has a precious opportunity to bring about reform, if its more credible leaders are willing to put in the work instead of voicing fantasies about eliminating essential government services. The complexity of the federal tax code imposes an estimated $546 billion in annual costs on the U.S. economy, including billions of hours in lost productivity and out-of-pocket compliance costs, according to the center-right Tax Foundation. ... If the incoming Trump administration wants its tax-change plans to be carried out effectively, it should retire its anti-IRS rhetoric and give the agency the tools it needs to get the job done. After all, it’s a matter of following the law. At the Lianhua Hill Supercharging Station, NEV owners can recharge their vehicles quickly, thanks to a major upgrade in the station's infrastructure. Once limited to 60 kilowatts, it now offers up to 600 kilowatts of charging power, allowing up to 46 vehicles to charge simultaneously. This development is part of Shenzhen's broader initiative to create a more convenient and efficient charging infrastructure for NEVs. As of October 2024, over a quarter of the city's vehicles are electric, and the trend is accelerating rapidly. The surge in adoption reflects a nationwide shift. Across China, NEV sales have skyrocketed, with more than 9.5 million vehicles sold in 2024 alone –an increase of 41.2 percent compared to the previous year, data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) shows. The rise in electric vehicles is also closely tied to a larger transformation in China's energy sector, with solar power playing an equally crucial role in the country's push toward sustainability. China's solar power generation has surpassed its wind and hydroelectric power generation to become the country's second-largest power generation source, with the installed capacity reaching 793 giga-watts by the end of October this year, according to official data. Much of this capacity is concentrated in China's eastern and western regions, where vast solar farms and distributed solar systems generate clean energy. "It is expected that the newly installed capacity of solar power generation will be about 250 million kilowatts in 2024, and the cumulative installed capacity of solar power generation is expected to exceed 850 million kilowatts, accounting for more than a quarter of the total installed capacity in the country," Yang Kun, executive vice chairman of China Electricity Council, told the China Media Group (CMG) China's rapid development of solar power capacity is complemented by investments in cutting-edge technologies to enhance efficiency and reliability, such as the 1-million-kilowatt integrated solar project in Hami, located in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, which combines photovoltaic (PV) and solar thermal power generation. The Hami project, which commenced operations in December 2024, features China's largest "Linear Fresnel" concentrated solar power (CSP) demonstration, utilizing advanced technology that harnesses solar energy through reflection and refraction. With the integration of 260,000 sun-tracking mirrors, the project converts solar energy into stored thermal energy, enabling continuous power generation day and night, even after the sun sets. "The combination of photovoltaic and solar thermal systems allows for uninterrupted power generation around the clock, with photovoltaic energy during the day and solar thermal energy at night," explained Niu Jianle, the project manager. This dual system ensures reliable energy output and highlights the potential of integrating solar power with energy storage. Read more: One million-kilowatt integrated solar-thermal project begins operation in Xinjiang Solar thermal technology stabilizes energy output and enables flexible regulation, making it an essential tool for replacing traditional energy sources. Currently, more than 600 enterprises in China support the solar thermal sector, with improved domestic equipment helping to drive large-scale development of this renewable energy technology. As China advances its renewable energy capabilities, it also focuses on greening its logistics sector, a key component of the national economy. This includes adopting clean energy vehicles, such as hydrogen-powered trucks, and optimizing supply chains using digital technologies. Several key trends are driving the green transformation of China's logistics sector, according to the China Green Logistics Development Report (2023-2024) released this month by the China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing (CFLP). One of the most significant developments is the rise of multimodal transport, which integrates road, rail and water transport to reduce emissions and improve energy efficiency. This approach is central to China's strategy for cutting the carbon footprint of its logistics sector while maintaining the efficiency of its vast supply chains. In addition to multimodal transport, the logistics sector is embracing digital technologies like artificial intelligence, big data, and the Internet of Things (IoT). These innovations streamline operations, reduce energy consumption, and boost overall efficiency. Alongside these technological advancements, China's logistics companies are also introducing recyclable packaging and biodegradable materials to minimize waste and further enhance sustainability. According to He Liming, head of the CFLP, intelligent warehousing systems and real-time data analytics are playing a key role in reducing waste and emissions. As a result, logistics operations are becoming increasingly environmentally friendly, fundamentally changing how goods are transported, stored and delivered. He highlighted the progress in clean energy and intelligent technologies that are shaping the green transformation of logistics. "In recent years, technologies like hydrogen fuel logistics vehicles and intelligent warehousing systems have made significant strides, creating new pathways for the industry's green shift," He noted. "Additionally, efforts are being made to promote sustainable materials and practices, such as recyclable packaging and biodegradable solutions, further reducing the carbon footprint of logistics operations."

BERLIN (AP) — Tech entrepreneur Elon Musk caused uproar after backing Germany’s far-right party in a major newspaper ahead of key parliamentary elections in the Western European country, leading to the resignation of the paper’s opinion editor in protest. Germany is to vote in an early election on Feb. 23 after Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s three-party governing coalition collapsed last month in a dispute over how to revitalize the country’s stagnant economy. Musk's guest opinion piece for Welt am Sonntag —a sister publication of POLITICO owned by the Axel Springer Group — published in German over the weekend, was the second time this month he supported the Alternative for Germany, or AfD. “The Alternative for Germany (AfD) is the last spark of hope for this country," Musk wrote in his translated commentary. He went on to say the far-right party “can lead the country into a future where economic prosperity, cultural integrity and technological innovation are not just wishes, but reality.” The Tesla Motors CEO also wrote that his investment in Germany gave him the right to comment on the country's condition. The AfD is polling strongly, but its candidate for the top job, Alice Weidel , has no realistic chance of becoming chancellor because other parties refuse to work with the far-right party. An ally of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, the technology billionaire challenged in his opinion piece the party's public image. “The portrayal of the AfD as right-wing extremist is clearly false, considering that Alice Weidel, the party’s leader, has a same-sex partner from Sri Lanka! Does that sound like Hitler to you? Please!” Musk’s commentary has led to a debate in German media over the boundaries of free speech, with the paper's own opinion editor announcing her resignation, pointedly on Musk's social media platform, X. “I always enjoyed leading the opinion section of WELT and WAMS. Today an article by Elon Musk appeared in Welt am Sonntag. I handed in my resignation yesterday after it went to print," Eva Marie Kogel wrote. A critical article by the future editor-in-chief of the Welt group, Jan Philipp Burgard, accompanied Musk’s opinion piece. “Musk’s diagnosis is correct, but his therapeutic approach, that only the AfD can save Germany, is fatally wrong,” Burgard wrote. Responding to a request for comment from the German Press Agency, dpa, the current editor-in-chief of the Welt group, Ulf Poschardt, and Burgard — who is due to take over on Jan. 1 — said in a joint statement that the discussion over Musk's piece was "very insightful. Democracy and journalism thrive on freedom of expression.” “This will continue to determine the compass of the “world” in the future. This holiday season, Jesica Cadiam Standley, a Maui fire survivor, is grateful to have a place to call home for the holidays. This holiday season, Jesica Cadiam Standley, a Maui fire survivor, is grateful to have a place to call home for the holidays. Standley, a single mother of eight, earlier this month won the lottery for one of the units at Kaiaulu o Kuku‘ia, an affordable, 200-unit housing development in Lahaina. CVS, which operates Longs Drugs in Hawaii, contributed about $17.5 million in equity investments toward the project, in collaboration with Ikaika ‘Ohana, a local nonprofit, Urban Housing Communities and Hunt Capital Partners. (function(d,s,n){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];js=d.createElement(s);js.className=n;js.src="//player.ex.co/player/bdc806f4-0fc1-40a1-aff0-a3d5239c169c";fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}(document,"script","exco-player")); The project was under construction prior to the Lahaina wildfire last August, and was able to resume as none of the buildings were seriously damaged. CVS says it is the first new permanent housing on the island since the fire. So far, families have moved into about 40 units, and 88 are expected to be moved in by the end of the month, according to CVS. The rent ranges from about $700 to $2,000 per month. After having lost her Lahaina home to the fire, Standley and her family have been moving from hotel room to hotel room, and more recently, renting a two- bedroom apartment for more than $3,000 outside of Lahaina, which resulted in challenges getting the kids to school on time. Now they have a place to call home in Lahaina, less than a mile where Standley was born and raised. “We’re so grateful and so happy,” said Standley. “It’s been a long road since the fire ... The kids are super excited, and just overjoyed.” The Christmas tree is decorated and stockings hung, and it finally feels like home. Last year, Standley said they were in a hotel room, and did not put up a Christmas tree. She still remembers Aug. 8, 2023, the day of the wildfire, as if it were yesterday. Standley lived in Kuhua Camp, where many residents perished after wildfire quickly engulfed the area. She has told the story dozens of times, and still remembers all the details. Early that morning, her grown daughter, who lived in a nearby apartment with a sibling, texted her to say she had a dream about a fire, with the wind blowing and a dog barking. Throughout the day, her daughter kept calling to say there was indeed a fire, and that she should watch out for it. As the fire closed in later that day, Standley remembers exactly where she was at 3 p.m. — sitting at the kitchen table — when she heard a neighbor across the street screaming. “As I open my lanai doors, I could feel the heat,” she said. “Then I started yelling, ‘Get in the car!’” She gathered her younger children, along with three from the neighborhood that were over playing that day, jumped in the car and drove away. She did not have time to gather any items, including her wedding ring inside the house. She remembers that there were two exits from her neighborhood, and that, “we went right.” That decision would perhaps make the difference between life and death, she said, due to the traffic that came to a standstill on the other side, blocking the way out. In her mind, Standley said, “I kept thinking to myself, we’re going to come back.” After all, the family had experienced a fire in 2018, and had been able to return to their home. She remembers as they drove, how a set of dark clouds settled over Lahaina. “It just eclipsed the sun,” she said. “It just got to this eerie, black darkness.” Standley would come to realize she would never be able to return, as her home burned down in the fire that day, taking more than 101 lives and destroying thousands of buildings, including historic Lahaina town. Standley, who lost her husband in 2021, has eight children ranging from ages 8 to 31, the eldest of whom lives in Honolulu. She is grateful all were accounted for and survived the fire. Having a permanent place to call home, alongside many fellow Lahaina survivors and close to schools and her work, has been a relief, she said, and feels like “somewhere where we belong.” “To have something that’s affordable, it’s just a weight off your shoulders,” she said. “It’s almost like you have your dignity back.” Still, she expects a long road ahead to recovery, for survivors as well as all of Lahaina. CVS, with the help of dozens of volunteers from the University of Hawaii Maui College, put together “welcome home” gift baskets for the new residents of Kaiaulu o Kuku‘ia last week with air filters, cookware, towels, children’s night lights and other household items. CVS Health also invested $17.3 million with The Kobayashi Group, The Ahe Group and CREA LLC to build 169 affordable housing units at Parkway Village in Kapolei, which is to bring over 400 affordable rentals to the community. CVS says equitable access to stable housing is one of the barriers to better health. Both affordable home projects are also expected to offer tuition-free preschools.

AP News Summary at 3:15 p.m. ESTA lot has changed since Natalie Bassingthwaighte's star first rose in the early-to-mid-2000s, but she is . or signup to continue reading Natalie will star in Shirley Valentine, a one-woman play about a housewife stuck in a world of routine who finds herself during a trip to Greece. Affectionately known as Nat Bass, the 49-year-old singer and has never led a life of routine but said Shirley's journey still resonated deeply with her. "It just has this kind of essence of creating your own destiny and making decisions for and finding yourself again after having children, your children leaving home, being married. "I think we all have that. It is not just women; men and women ... Trying to come back to self, I guess ... but also a new discovery as well." Natalie's journey to self-discovery is a poignant one. She has spoken openly about her struggles with mental health over the years. She separated from her husband and Rogue Traders bandmate Cameron McGlinchey in August 2023. In November of the same year, she went public about her relationship with her new partner, Pip Loth. The announcement of her union with Loth, who is non-binary, sparked an angry backlash from social media trolls. "It was so difficult because I feel like no one should have the right to be able to comment on anyone's joy in a negative way," she said. "It's hard enough to be in this industry, to have children and a family and to, you know, be in this space, but to have to then sort of announce it publicly and then defend yourself, it's not fun." Despite the challenges of dealing with the ugly backlash, Natalie says she is in a great space. Her family life is good; she and McGlinchey remain on excellent terms, and for every negative comment, there were many more positive ones. At almost 50, Natalie still looks great. So, how does she keep herself in shape mentally and physically amidst a hectic work schedule? She exercises as much as possible and particularly enjoys pilates and walking. She eats well, takes vitamins, tries to ensure she is getting sleep, and is a big reader, especially of biographies. She also meditates for 10 minutes each morning and 10 minutes every night. "A lot of people get scared of meditation ... a few years ago, I couldn't think of anything worse. I didn't even know how to do it ... I persevered with it." "You just have to not think that it's meditation and that you're just listening to someone's voice telling you a story. Quite quickly, you can get very grounded and very good at being able to switch off whenever you need it, wherever you are." While she has maintained a breakneck pace over the years, she said she would like to strike a balance over the next 10 years, continuing to find great work opportunities and spending more time at home. Natalie is excited about starring in Shirley Valentine. While she has performed extensively on stage, this will be her first one-woman show, and she is looking forward to the challenge of captivating an audience single-handedly. She is also a huge fan of Willy Russell's script. "I think the thing that I loved about it [most was], it was so funny. The writing is beautiful. It's life-affirming. It's heartwarming."
