BEIRUT — Israel's military launched airstrikes across Lebanon on Monday, unleashing explosions throughout the country and killing at least 31 while Israeli leaders appeared to be closing in on a negotiated ceasefire with the Hezbollah militant group. Israeli strikes hit commercial and residential buildings in Beirut as well as in the port city of Tyre. Military officials claimed they targeted areas known as Hezbollah strongholds. "Let's hope it's true and that there's no backing down at the last-minute.” A ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon was foremost on the agenda of the G7 meeting in Fiuggi, outside Rome, that gathered ministers from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States, in the last G7 encounter of the Biden administration. For the first time, the G7 ministers were joined by their counterparts from Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, as well as the Secretary General of the Arab League. Thick smoke, flames and debris erupt Monday from an Israeli airstrike that targeted a building in Tayouneh, Beirut, Lebanon. Meanwhile, massive explosions lit up Lebanon's skies with flashes of orange, sending towering plumes of smoke into the air as Israeli airstrikes pounded Beirut's southern suburbs Monday. The blasts damaged buildings and left shattered glass and debris scattered across nearby streets. Some of the strikes landed close to central Beirut and near Christian neighborhoods and other targets where Israel issued evacuation warnings, including in Tyre and Nabatiyeh province. Israeli airstrikes also hit the northeast Baalbek-Hermel region without warning. Lebanon's Health Ministry said Monday that 26 people were killed in southern Lebanon, four in the eastern Baalbek-Hermel province and one in Choueifat, a neighborhood in Beirut's southern suburbs that was not subjected to evacuation warnings on Monday. The deaths brought the total toll to 3,768 killed in Lebanon throughout 13 months of war between Israel and Hezbollah and nearly two months since Israel launched its ground invasion. Many of those killed since the start of the war between Israel and Hezbollah have been civilians, and health officials said some of the recovered bodies were so severely damaged that DNA testing would be required to confirm their identities. Israel claims to have killed more than 2,000 Hezbollah members. Lebanon's Health Ministry says the war has displaced 1.2 million people. Destroyed buildings stand Monday in the area of a village in southern Lebanon as seen from northern Israel. Israeli ground forces invaded southern Lebanon in early October, meeting heavy resistance in a narrow strip of land along the border. The military previously exchanged attacks across the border with Hezbollah, an Iran-backed militant group that began firing rockets into Israel the day after the war in Gaza began last year. Lebanese politicians have decried the ongoing airstrikes and said they are impeding ceasefire negotiations. The country's deputy parliament speaker accused Israel of ramping up its bombardment to pressure Lebanon to make concessions in indirect ceasefire negotiations with Hezbollah. Elias Bousaab, an ally of the militant group, said Monday that the pressure has increased because "we are close to the hour that is decisive regarding reaching a ceasefire." Israeli officials voiced similar optimism Monday about prospects for a ceasefire. Mike Herzog, the country's ambassador to Washington, earlier in the day told Israeli Army Radio that several points had yet to be finalized. Though any deal would require agreement from the government, Herzog said Israel and Hezbollah were "close to a deal." "It can happen within days," he said. Israeli officials have said the sides are close to an agreement that would include withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon and a pullback of Hezbollah fighters from the Israeli border. The proposal under discussion to end the fighting calls for an initial two-month ceasefire during which Israeli forces would withdraw from Lebanon and Hezbollah would end its armed presence along the southern border south of the Litani River. The withdrawals would be accompanied by an influx of thousands more Lebanese army troops, who have been largely sidelined in the war, to patrol the border area along with an existing U.N. peacekeeping force. Western diplomats and Israeli officials said Israel demands the right to strike in Lebanon if it believes Hezbollah is violating the terms. The Lebanese government says such an arrangement would authorize violations of the country's sovereignty. On paper, being more sustainable and eco-friendly while shopping sounds great—so why don't more people do it? There is growing consumer consciousness about the environmental impact of where people choose to shop and the sustainability of the products they buy. According to McKinsey, over 60% of individuals surveyed in 2020 said they would be that is packaged in an eco-friendly way. However, although the narrative of eco-friendly products being more expensive is true, there is often more of an effort to use better quality materials that last longer than their noneco-friendly counterparts. This could end up saving consumers money in the long run: By paying more upfront, they can get more wear out of sustainable fashion, for instance. There is also undeniable political rhetoric surrounding eco-friendly products—however, despite many Conservative politicians decrying sustainable products, members of all generations are increasingly choosing to prioritize shopping sustainably regardless of their political affiliation, according to research from . This finding shows a trend toward seeing sustainability as a nonpartisan subject everyone can benefit from, no matter where they lie on the political spectrum. Some might think eco-friendly clothing, in particular, is not fashion-forward; after all, many of the top clothing retailers in the world partake in fast fashion. However, brands are increasingly being recognized as 'cool' and 'trendy' for supporting environmentally ethical practices, particularly as younger generations prioritize sustainability, as noted before. Many increasingly popular online stores are taking advantage of this paradigm shift by offering secondhand shopping options that are not only fashionable, but also more affordable, like ThredUp or Poshmark. Additionally, many legacy large-name brands are hopping on the sustainability movement and are gaining appreciation from loyal customers. Amazon's Climate Pledge Friendly program partners with third-party certification bodies to make it easier for shoppers to identify eco-friendly products as they browse the website. H&M's newly launched H&M Rewear program debuts a resale platform that allows the resale of all clothing brands—not just their own. Similarly, Patagonia's Worn Wear program allows shoppers to trade in and buy used gear and clothing. The federal government is also working to close this gap. The Environmental Protection Agency's is attempting to make sustainable shopping easier for consumers and companies alike. It includes a directory of certified products, a list of safer chemicals to look out for on labels, a "Safer Choice" label that products can earn to denote they are eco-friendly, and resources for manufacturers looking to adopt more sustainable practices. Most of all, though, the biggest way shoppers can shift toward sustainable shopping is through their behaviors and attitudes amongst their peers and communities. Studies show that humans largely care what others think of their actions; the more shoppers make environmentally conscious shopping the norm, the more others will follow suit. From an economic perspective, the more consumers shop eco-friendly, the more affordable and accessible these products will become, too: Sustainable products are currently more expensive because they are not in high demand. WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden kicked off his final holiday season at the White House on Monday by issuing the traditional reprieve to two turkeys who will bypass the Thanksgiving table to live out their days in southern Minnesota. Biden welcomed 2,500 guests to the South Lawn under sunny skies as he cracked jokes about the fates of “Peach” and “Blossom” and sounded wistful tones about the last weeks of his presidency after a half-century in Washington power circles. “It’s been the honor of my life. I’m forever grateful,” Biden said, taking note of his impending departure on Jan. 20, 2025. That's when power will transfer to Republican President-elect Donald Trump, the man Biden defeated four years ago and was battling again until he was pressured to bow out of the race amid concerns about his age and viability. Biden is 82. Until Inauguration Day, the president and first lady Jill Biden will continue a busy run of festivities that will double as their long goodbye. The White House schedule in December is replete with holiday parties for various constituencies, from West Wing staff to members of Congress and the White House press corps. DENVER — A judge on Monday rejected a request to block a San Jose State women’s volleyball team member from playing in a conference tournament on grounds that she is transgender. Monday’s ruling by U.S. Magistrate Judge S. Kato Crews in Denver will allow the player, who has played all season, to compete in the Mountain West Conference women’s championship opening this week in Las Vegas. The ruling comes in a lawsuit filed by nine current players against the Mountain West Conference challenging the league’s policies for allowing transgender players to participate. The players argued that letting her compete was a safety risk and unfair. While some media have reported those and other details, neither San Jose State nor the forfeiting teams have confirmed the school has a trans woman volleyball player. The Associated Press is withholding the player’s name because she has not commented publicly on her gender identity. School officials also have declined an interview request with the player. Crews' ruling referred to the athlete as an “alleged transgender" player and noted that no defendant disputed that the San Jose State roster includes a transgender woman player. San Jose State will "continue to support its student-athletes and reject discrimination in all forms," the university said in a statement, confirming that all its student-athletes are eligible to participate under NCAA and conference rules. “We are gratified that the Court rejected an eleventh-hour attempt to change those rules. Our team looks forward to competing in the Mountain West volleyball tournament this week." The conference did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment. The players filed a notice for emergency appeal with the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. Crews said the players who filed the complaint could have sought relief much earlier, noting the individual universities had acknowledged that not playing their games against San Jose State this season would result in a loss in league standings. He also refused a request to re-seed the tournament without the forfeited losses. The judge said injunctions are meant to preserve the status quo. The conference policy regarding forfeiting for refusing to play against a team with a transgender player had been in effect since 2022 and the San Jose State player has been on the roster since 2022 -– making that the status quo. The player competed at the college level three previous seasons, including two for San Jose State, drawing little attention. This season’s awareness of her reported identity led to an uproar among some players, pundits, parents and politicians in a major election year. Crews' ruling also said injunctions are meant to prevent harm, but in this case, he argued, the harm has already occurred. The games have been forfeited, the tournament has been seeded, the teams have made travel plans and the participants have confirmed they're playing. The tournament starts Wednesday and continues Friday and Saturday. Colorado State is seeded first and San Jose State, second. The teams split their regular-season matches and both get byes into Friday's semifinals. The conference tournament winner gets an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. San Jose State coach Todd Kress, whose team has not competed in the national tournament since 2001, has said his team has been getting “messages of hate” and that has taken a toll on his players. Several teams refused to play against San Jose State during the season, earning losses in the official conference standings. Boise State and Wyoming each had two forfeits while Utah State and Nevada both had one. Southern Utah, a member of the Western Athletic Conference, was first to cancel against San Jose State this year. Nevada’s players stated they “refuse to participate in any match that advances injustice against female athletes,” without elaborating. Nevada did not qualify for the conference tournament. The nine current players and others now suing the Mountain West Conference, the California State University Board of Trustees and others include San Jose State senior setter and co-captain Brooke Slusser. The teammate Slusser says is transgender hits the volleyball with more force than others on the team, raising fear during practices of suffering concussions from a head hit, the complaint says. The Independent Council on Women’s Sports is funding a separate lawsuit against the NCAA for allowing transgender women to compete in women’s sports. Both lawsuits claim the landmark 1972 federal antidiscrimination law known as Title IX prohibits transgender women in women’s sports. Title IX prohibits sexual discrimination in federally funded education; Slusser is a plaintiff in both lawsuits. Several circuit courts have used a U.S. Supreme Court ruling to conclude that discriminating against someone based on their transgender status or sexual orientation is sex-based discrimination, Crews wrote. That means case law does not prove the “likelihood of success” needed to grant an injunction. An NCAA policy that subjects transgender participation to the rules of sports governing bodies took effect this academic year. USA Volleyball says a trans woman must suppress testosterone for 12 months before competing. The NCAA has not flagged any issues with San Jose State. The Republican governors of Idaho, Nevada, Utah and Wyoming have made public statements in support of the team cancellations, citing fairness in women’s sports. President-elect Donald Trump likewise has spoken out against allowing transgender women to compete in women’s sports. Canadian fund drops bid for Spanish pharma firm GrifolsAfter two months inside a , experienced another setback as he prepares for his , with another federal judge denying his request to be released on bail. Before the Thanksgiving holiday, Judge Arun Subramanian ruled in favor of prosecutors, determining the hip-hop mogul should not be allowed to prepare for his 2025 trial from a private residence. Combs' lawyers what they called "an extremely substantial, comprehensive bail package" with a $50 million bond, arguing their client has not been able to from inside the Metropolitan Detention Center. USA TODAY has reached out to Combs' representatives for comment. Subramanian's ruling marked the third time a U.S. District Court judge on bond. In October, a federal appeals court judge pending a decision from a three-judge panel on his motion for bail. "The Court finds that the government has shown by clear and convincing evidence that no condition or combination of conditions will reasonably assure the safety of the community," Subramanian ruling, obtained by USA TODAY, reads. He noted U.S. attorneys have presented "compelling evidence of Combs’s propensity for violence," including by showing footage of him in 2016. During a Nov. 22 bail hearing, prosecutors continued to argue Combs presented a risk of danger and witness tampering. Combs' defense argued against the picture the government has painted of the rapper and again asserted that their bail proposal addresses any concerns about ensuring Combs would return to court and would not engage in obstruction of justice. Subramanian had both sides submit letters on Nov. 25 detailing Combs' communications from jail before making his decision. Combs' renewed motion for bail, , was Combs' latest attempt at being released before his trial, following around the time he was charged and filed in the Second Circuit Court of Appeals in September. This latest proposal, like those prior, offered a $50 million bond secured by the equity in Combs and his mother's Florida homes, implementation of a 24/7 monitoring service by approved security personnel, no internet or phone access for Combs outside of meetings with legal counsel, a pre-approved visitor list consisting of select family members and surrendered passports belonging to the rapper and his family members. This latest bid also mentioned Combs being willing to participate in "full home detention" at either his $48 million Miami home "or at a suitable location in New York." His family visits would be monitored by assigned security and Combs would be subject to "testing for a prohibited substance" as needed. Subramanian, in his Wednesday ruling, expressed skepticism of the conditions Combs' attorneys suggested as he wrote, "The Court doubts the sufficiency of any conditions that place trust in Combs and individuals in his employ—like a private security detail—to follow those conditions." The judge also pushed back on claims that the jail's conditions were not conducive to the rapper's preparation for trial: "Combs has not carried his burden of demonstrating that release from detention is necessary for trial-preparation purposes." When Combs, 55, arrived in the Manhattan courtroom with members of the U.S. Marshals Service for a bail hearing on Friday, he wore a beige jail-issued outfit and blew kisses toward his family seated in the second row. His mother, , and — , , , and — were photographed arriving at the federal courthouse earlier in the day. Combs, sex trafficking, racketeering and transportation to engage in prostitution, pleaded not guilty to the alleged crimes and has maintained all of his sexual encounters were consensual in the face of over the past year accusing him of rape, trafficking and sexual abuse from the 1990s to 2022. In their Nov. 25 letters, Combs' team argued all of his actions since being detained fall under his First Amendment right to free speech as he "(defends) himself in the court of public opinion." Meanwhile, U.S. attorneys rejected this claim and detailed his alleged "extensive efforts to taint the jury pool" while at Brooklyn's Metropolitan Detention Center. In his filing, Damian Williams, the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, noted "District courts have interpreted 'obstruction' ... to include willful actions that jeopardize the integrity of judicial proceedings." He claimed Combs "has used multiple unauthorized means of communications, which make it difficult or impossible to monitor the defendant’s communications." As , Combs has used other inmates' methods of outside communication, including phone access codes, and a service called ContactMeASAP to speak with people outside the MDC. Williams wrote, "The Government has no way of knowing whether there are other PAC or ContactMeASAP accounts the defendant is using of which the Government is not aware. Put simply, when the defendant uses other inmate’s accounts, his communications are very difficult—if not impossible—for BOP and the Government to track and monitor." In a previous filing, Combs' lawyers said they were unaware use of ContactMeASAP.com by an inmate "was unauthorized by (the Bureau of Prisons) as it is widely used in the prisons." They also noted, "The government has never once instructed defense counsel to have Mr. Combs refrain from using the service, nor has the BOP." "Inmates will frequently use other inmates' minutes to allow for (1) more than one call in a one-hour period; and (2) more phone calls once their 300 minutes expire," defense attorney Teny Geragos previously wrote, adding that BOP officials "are able to monitor every message Mr. Combs sends and receives." He stopped using ContactMeAsap.com "as of November 16, 2024." However, Williams alleged Combs continued "to use the ContactMeASAP account of at least one other inmate, sending messages to a family member as recently as November 24, 2024." He also claimed, "While at the MDC, the defendant has instructed family members and third parties to contact multiple potential victims and witnesses." In Wednesday's ruling, Subramanian weighed in on Combs' jail communications, writing "The Court makes no determination that the content of Combs’s communications through these channels was improper." "However, his willingness to skirt (Bureau of Prisons) rules in a way that would make it more difficult for his communications to be monitored is strong evidence that the Court cannot be 'reasonably assure[d]' as to the sufficiency of any conditions of release," he added, "especially given that they occurred when Combs was seeking bail, and when he knew the government’s concerns about witness tampering and obstruction were front and center." The first time Combs sought bail, U.S. Magistrate Judge Robyn Tarnofsky that Combs posed a risk if he were to be released for home detention. "There are no conditions I can impose that would reasonably assure the appearance in court and the safety of the community," Tarnofsky said Sept. 17. "I don't know that I think you can trust yourself, and I don't believe that counsel has the ability to control you, given the very significant concerns I have, particularly because of substance abuse and what seem like anger issues." The following day, Judge Andrew L. Carter, Jr. — who has since recused himself from the case — also ruled against Combs, determining that no amount of bail could guarantee Combs wouldn't tamper with witnesses. "I find that the government has proven that the defendant is a danger regarding obstruction of justice and witness tampering by clear and convincing evidence," Carter said. "I also find that the government has proven that the defendant is a danger to the safety of others in the community." Last month, federal appeals court judge Nardini denied Combs' pending the court's decision . Nardini referred the motion to a three-judge panel within the Second Circuit Court of Appeals. In Combs' , his lawyers argued the proposed conditions of his release were adequate in ensuring he will show up in court. "Indeed, hardly a risk of flight, he is a 54-year-old father of seven, a U.S. citizen, an extraordinarily successful artist, businessman, and philanthropist, and one of the most recognizable people on earth," the appeal stated. Investigators claim Combs to use his finances and status in the entertainment industry to "fulfill his sexual desires" in a "recurrent and widely known" pattern of abuse, which included so-called "freak offs" — sexual encounters he allegedly orchestrated and recorded. U.S. attorneys have allegedly obtained Combs' information and data from phone, tech and social media companies as well as hotels and airlines. NEW YORK — Juan Soto appears on a timetable to decide on where to sign either before or during baseball’s winter meetings in Dallas, which run from Dec. 8-12. Soto met with the New York Yankees, New York Mets, Los Angeles Dodgers, Boston Red Sox and Toronto Blue Jays, a person familiar with the negotiations said last week, speaking to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because details were not announced. Soto’s agent, Scott Boras, asked teams to submit initial offers by Thanksgiving, a second person familiar with the talks said, also on condition of anonymity because it was not announced. Soto is the top player available among this year’s free agents. A four-time All-Star, Soto finished third in AL MVP voting after hitting .288 with 41 homers, 109 RBIs and 129 walks. He has a .285 career average with 201 homers, 592 RBIs and 769 walks over seven major league seasons. Soto turned down a $440 million, 15-year offer from Washington in 2022, prompting the Nationals to trade him to San Diego, which then dealt him to the Yankees last December. Soto then combined with Aaron Judge to lead New York to the World Series, where the Yankees lost to the Dodgers. (AP) — Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau returned home Saturday after his meeting with Donald Trump without assurances the president-elect will back away from threatened tariffs on all products from the major American trading partner. Trump called the talks “productive” but signaled no retreat from a pledge that Canada says unfairly lumps it in with Mexico over the flow of drugs and migrants into the United States. After the leaders’ hastily arranged dinner Friday night at Trump's Mar-a-Lago club in Florida, Trudeau spoke of “an excellent conversation” but offered no details. NEW YORK (AP) — Sean “Diddy” Combs was denied bail on Wednesday as he awaits a May sex trafficking trial by a judge who cited evidence showing him to be a serious risk of witness tampering and proof that he has violated regulations in jail. U.S. District Judge Arun Subramanian made the decision in a written ruling following a bail hearing last week, when lawyers for the hip-hop mogul argued that a $50 million bail package they proposed would be sufficient to ensure Combs doesn’t flee and doesn’t try to intimidate prospective trial witnesses. Two other judges previously had been persuaded by prosecutors’ arguments that the Bad Boy Records founder was a danger to the community if he is not behind bars. Lawyers did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment on the decision. Combs, 55, has pleaded not guilty to for years, aided by associates and employees. An indictment alleges that he silenced victims through blackmail and violence, including kidnapping, arson and physical beatings. A federal appeals court judge last month denied Combs’ immediate release while a three-judge panel of the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan considers his bail request. Prosecutors have insisted that no bail conditions would be sufficient to protect the public and prevent the “I’ll Be Missing You” singer from fleeing. They say that even in a federal lockup in Brooklyn, Combs has orchestrated social media campaigns designed to influence prospective jurors and tried to publicly leak materials he thinks can help his case. Sony’s time in the handheld console space has been both short-lived and underperforming, but perhaps that could change with a new handheld capable of playing PS5 games natively. A new report states that Sony is currently working on such a handheld. It would be a console that allows the user to play games locally on the device. Rather than through Sony’s Remote Play feature for the PlayStation Portal that Sony released in 2023. Sony also recently updated the Portal to support cloud streaming if you’re a PlayStation Plus Premium subscriber. Again, though, this relies on cloud streaming. With an internet connection being a very necessary component for the gaming to take place. This newly rumored Sony PS5 handheld would truly allow gamers to play their favorite games anywhere. Even if there’s no internet connection, assuming they’re not trying to play a game that needs internet to work. The Sony PS5 handheld is “years away” The prospect of Sony making a handheld for native gameplay is an exciting one. Especially since its PSP and PS Vita were so beloved by the majority of gamers who went out and bought one. Even though the PS Vita didn’t sell well, it has a cult following of fans. And for the most part, it was a great little system. Sony just didn’t market or support it very well. It also came at a time when Nintendo dominated the handheld space. Which hasn’t really changed. More importantly, handhelds just weren’t as popular at the time. That’s something that has changed. The Nintendo Switch exploded in popularity and has become one of the best-selling consoles of all time. That’s been followed by the Steam Deck and several other gaming handhelds that play PC games locally, including the ASUS ROG Ally X . So perhaps the time is right for Sony to enter this space and have the console be a hit. After all, the PlayStation Portal has exceeded Sony’s sales predictions. The major caveat here is the release time. As it currently stands, there isn’t one. According to Bloomberg , which cites anonymous sources familiar with Sony’s plans, the console is still years away. There’s also the very real possibility that Sony changes its mind and decides not to continue development at some point down the road. Sony is making the console to compete with Nintendo and Microsoft Despite now just being a great time to release a handheld, Sony is also reportedly making this console to compete with Nintendo and Microsoft. Nintendo is already a leader in this gaming space thanks to the Switch. The company is also preparing to launch the Nintendo Switch 2 sometime in the first half of next year. Microsoft has also confirmed that it’s considering an Xbox handheld . Sony wants a piece of that pie. The plan is to potentially extend Sony’s reach and get its PS5 games into more hands. It’s also highly likely that a large portion of PS5 owners would opt to buy one. The Rocks pressured the Boilermakers early and often, forcing Bowen to cough up the ball 14 times in the first half with typical Rock Island fullcourt press.
