Mystery drones over U.S. calls for specialized response, Senator Chuck Schumer saysNoneUS stocks closed out the trading week near the unchanged mark in a subdued session on Friday, with the S&P 500 and Dow posting weekly declines, while the Nasdaq secured its fourth consecutive week of gains. Broadcom forecast quarterly revenue surpassing Wall Street expectations and predicted robust growth in demand for its custom AI chips over the next few years. The optimistic outlook propelled the company's shares 24 per cent higher, pushing its market capitalisation past $US1 trillion ($A1.6 trillion) for the first time. Chip stocks were mixed, with Broadcom rival Marvell Technology rising 10.8 per cent, while AI bellwether Nvidia closed 2.2 per cent lower. But a gauge of semiconductor stocks added 3.2 per cent. Yields on US Treasuries rose across the board, with ones on the benchmark 10-year bond hitting a three-week high. "Right now the interest rate selloff is winning," said Jay Hatfield, chief executive officer at Infrastructure Capital Management in New York. "It's pretty natural for value and income stocks to go down when tech stocks are rising." Technology stocks continued their upward momentum, driving the Nasdaq above the 20,000 mark for the first time on Wednesday. The rally was further bolstered by an in-line inflation report, which solidified expectations for a 25 basis-point interest rate cut from the Federal Reserve in its meeting next week. Trader bets on the cut at the central bank's December 17-18 meeting stand at near 97 per cent, according to CME's FedWatch Tool. However, they indicate chances of a pause in January. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 86.06 points, or 0.20 per cent, to 43,828.06, the S&P 500 lost 0.16 point, or 0.00 per cent, to 6,051.09 and the Nasdaq Composite gained 23.88 points, or 0.12 per cent, to 19,926.72. Wall Street had taken a breather in the previous session after recent gains and some hot economic data ahead of the Fed's meeting, setting up the benchmark S&P 500 and the Dow for weekly losses. However, the Nasdaq ended the week higher. US stocks have repeatedly reached all-time highs this year, driven by surging interest in heavyweight tech companies capitalising on artificial-intelligence trends. Investor sentiment also received a boost following Donald Trump's presidential election victory, as markets anticipate his pro-business policies could enhance corporate profitability. Among other movers, RH jumped 16.95 per cent after the home furnishings retailer reported higher net revenue for the third quarter, while D.R. Horton eased 0.89 per cent as J.P. Morgan downgraded its rating on the homebuilder to "underweight." Declining issues outnumbered advancers by a 2.23-to-1 ratio on the NYSE. There were 100 new highs and 141 new lows on the NYSE. The S&P 500 posted 8 new 52-week highs and 15 new lows while the Nasdaq Composite recorded 75 new highs and 199 new lows. Volume on US exchanges was 12.56 billion shares, compared with the 14.03 billion average for the full session over the last 20 trading days.
There are many parts to the new Arsenal but none as valuable as their most reliable goalscorer, and most talented attacker, , who once again made the difficult parts look much easier than they can for so many of his peers. Another Champions League night in north London and another two goals for the golden boy, who now has nine to go with 12 assists across 21 appearances this season. That last assist depends on his team-mate Kai Havertz being credited with the third goal, which took a touch off the Monaco captain Thilo Kehrer, once of West Ham, before it went in. Although for Saka one would assume there will be many more of these kinds of games. The great homegrown star of scores all sorts of goals, and the two on this night were by no means his most spectacular. But they come in all flavours, and it is the volume of goals expected now of the elite players, a group to whom Saka now belongs, which is critical. This will be a long career for Saka and the older he gets, the greater the expectations will be – although thus far he has skipped up the levels every time. Europe’s top club competition? Saka now has eight goals in the 14 games he has played in the Champions League since the start of last season. His second Champions League season has been impressive and he is on the kind of career progression that puts him on a par with some of the competition’s best players at the same age. It is easy to forget that he is just 23 and three months. This is already his sixth season as a Premier League regular. “It has been an evolution,” said Mikel Arteta, reflecting on the Saka era that has, fortunately for the Arsenal manager, coincided with his own time at the club. “He [Bukayo] wasn’t able to do that at 17, 18, 19 years old. He has developed the right way physically and mentally. Now he has the right habits to play every three days and to be at the highest level.” The absolute top end of the game is relentless for the likes of Saka – but it will make him very rich, very famous and possibly one of the greats. That he is a homegrown star is such an important part of it all for Arsenal. He was joined by two more academy graduates, the 18-year-old Myles Lewis-Skelly, who made his first Champions League start, and Ethan Nwaneri, 17, a late substitute. For Lewis-Skelly, a left-back, this was a big moment – he made the key pre-assist pass to Gabriel Jesus to create the first goal. It will help Arsenal that these young players are coming into a stable side. They are unbeaten at home in 14 games in all competitions. “A really proud moment,” said Arteta of Lewis-Skelly. “It’s just a joy to watch him. It’s a privilege to give a chance to somebody to change his career. It is great that we can trust him.” Arsenal go into Christmas with 13 points from six Champions League games which, in the old format, would have been enough to win the group and progress to the old knockout round of 16. Indeed, it was the total that Arsenal finished with last season in their group. Under the new format there are still two more games to come next month, with Arsenal third in the 36-team table on goal difference. They are one of six teams on 13 points, which means that the order of the automatic qualifying spots for the last 16 will likely change again – yet this is undoubtedly an Arsenal side comfortable in Europe. Last season it ended with the 1-0 defeat by Bayern in Munich in April. This time they will be a difficult side to eliminate – especially with that home record. Against Monaco, the club who turbocharged Arsene Wenger’s coaching career, and also the same team who launched Thierry Henry, Arsenal never looked like they might be discomfited. Monaco gave up three big first-half chances and their Polish goalkeeper Radoslaw Majecki, in particular, did well. Still, they played a dangerous game and eventually handed Arsenal the second and third goals. Monaco’s Austrian manager Adi Hutter has some brave ideas about playing the game that Arsenal eventually picked apart. Gabriel Jesus was afforded the first two Arsenal chances – they were the kind of classic through-on-goal, goalkeeper-striker face-offs of another era. Both were accompanied by a centre-half breathing down his neck and a sense of expectation in the stadium. The 27-year-old is no longer Arteta’s idea of a first-choice starter in the big games and the long-standing sense lingers that this is not a top-tier dispatcher of chances. Neither of Jesus’s opportunities were easy. The first was a traditional big hit over the top from Jakub Kiwior. The ball slowed as it bounced, but Jesus nudged it on and forced a good save from Majecki. Second time around it was Gabriel Martinelli’s through-ball and Jesus was holding off Kehrer as he struck a shot that was also saved. It would eventually be Jesus’s cross to the back post that created the chance that Saka converted. Martin Odegaard would miss when he seized on a poor touch by Soungoutou Magassa and slipped the ball past Kehrer. For all the Arsenal captain’s many qualities he never felt like a likely goalscorer in that one-on-one situation. Hutter brought on the former Liverpool winger Takumi Minamino at half-time, in place of Magassa, and his side were better. A mistake from the former Southampton defender Mohammed Salisu presented Saka with the ball for his second. The third for Havertz came late. Arsenal face six games in 21 days over Christmas, including the Carabao Cup tie with Crystal Palace. The challenge for them and their star name is to keep rolling out the big performances. 10:37 PM GMT Fortress Emirates 14 - Arsenal are unbeaten in their last 14 home games in all competitions (W12 D2), their best run under Mikel Arteta and best since an 18-game run under Arsene Wenger between March and November 2017. Surging. — OptaJoe (@OptaJoe) 10:29 PM GMT Arteta reacts Very happy with scoring three goals and keeping the clean sheet in the game, extremely happy. We started the game very well in the first half, it should have been three or four at least and then we could have put the game to bed. We didn’t, and in the Champions League, you have difficult moments, and we had that for a period of time, probably longer than expected because we weren’t precise enough, we didn’t adjust to the press well enough, and we suffered. But then with the second goal I thought the game was in control and I’m happy with the three points. 10:23 PM GMT Lewis-Skelly reacts On his involvement in the first goal: I saw the ball getting switched over from Martin, I was getting pressed, so I just thought keep calm, take the ball away from him. I saw Gabby peeling off and I played it through. Bukayo, great timing for the finish, he’s always there man. On his first Champions League start: I’m proud of myself. I believe in myself, but I’ve come a long way and I just want to thank everyone for giving me the opportunity and hopefully it’s the first of many. I’ll push on from here. On using Saka as an inspiration: Looking up to Bukayo, he has everything. Just the mindset, I’ve learnt a lot from him and I want to keep learning from him, 10:16 PM GMT Arsenal’s main man delivered again 10:10 PM GMT Saka praises Lewis-Skelly I just said to [Myles] that this is his level, have no doubts and play with confidence. He was a big part of the first goal. His future is very bright. He’s always asking questions and looking to learn. I’m so proud of him. 09:54 PM GMT FULL TIME: Arsenal 3 Monaco 0 All over at the Emirates. They move onto 13 points and firmly put themselves in position to qualify in the top eight. Scoreline slightly flatters Arsenal but all that matters is the win. 09:51 PM GMT 90+2mins: Arsenal 3 Monaco 0 Three goals. None from corners. Critics of Arsenal’s struggles in open play won’t have much to say tonight. 09:49 PM GMT 90mins: Arsenal 3 Monaco 0 Three minutes added on. 09:48 PM GMT 88mins: Arsenal 3 Monaco 0 GOAL Definitely game over now. Saka fires a shot towards goal and Havertz deflects the ball in. Replays suggest it might be an own goal by Kehrer, who was very close to Havertz. VAR check for offside but the goal stands. Painfully for Monaco, this one was created by their own inadequacy rather than any attacking genius from Arsenal. That’s game over, I’d say. Bukayo Saka’s two goals tonight have taken him to nine goals and 11 assists in all competitions this season. That’s 20 goal involvements in 21 appearances. 09:40 PM GMT 81mins: Arsenal 2 Monaco 0 Monaco sub: OFF Camara, Vanderson, Embolo ON Matazo, Teze, Ilenikhena 09:38 PM GMT 79mins: Arsenal 2 Monaco 0 Arsenal sub: OFF Odegaard ON Nwaneri 09:38 PM GMT 78mins: Arsenal 2 Monaco 0 GOAL That should ease all the tension. You can see why there is so much excitement about him at Arsenal. It’s not just Ethan Nwaneri... they have two top talents coming through. 09:25 PM GMT 65mins: Arsenal 1 Monaco 0 Big chance for Monaco. Saliba gives the ball away in his half. Jorginho, Timber and Trossard coming on. 09:19 PM GMT 59mins: Arsenal 1 Monaco 0 Arsenal get their first corner of the match. Rice comes over to take it. The Arsenal fans are getting excited. No Gabriel remember. Monaco have kept three players up. Rice’s cross is punched clear. Merino picks up a yellow for a trip. 09:16 PM GMT 57mins: Arsenal 1 Monaco 0 Arsenal need to see this little period out because Monaco are certainly encouraged by the errors the home side are making. 09:15 PM GMT 55mins: Arsenal 1 Monaco 0 First corner of the match goes to Monaco. Ben Seghir whips in an inswinger but Raya collects easily. 09:14 PM GMT 53mins: Arsenal 1 Monaco 0 Arteta is telling his team to calm down and take their time but he will be annoyed by how his team have started the second half. A few misplaced passes and Monaco have started sharply. 09:06 PM GMT 47mins: Arsenal 1 Monaco 0 Kiwior brings down Akliouche midway in Arsenal’s half. From the free kick whipped in by Camara, Kehrer attacks it and his thumping header flashes wide. A warning for Arsenal. 09:04 PM GMT SECOND HALF: Arsenal 1 Monaco 0 Martinelli comes out for the second half. Strong argument that Arteta should have taken him off as a precaution. A change for Monaco: OFF Magassa ON Minamino 08:56 PM GMT Arsenal’s main man 19 - Only Mohamed Salah (16 goals, 12 assists) has been involved in more goals in all competitions among Premier League players this season than Bukayo Saka (8 goals, 11 assists). The whistle blows and Arsenal lead at the break. They should be much further ahead but are fortunate not to be down to 10 men. 08:46 PM GMT 45mins: Arsenal 1 Monaco 0 Martinelli is very lucky not to get another yellow card after bringing down Camara. It’s a cynical foul. On another day, he could have been off. One minute added on. 08:45 PM GMT 44mins: Arsenal 1 Monaco 0 With a makeshift defence, it is important Arsenal’s attackers take the pressure off them. To do that, they really need to finish the chances they are creating. 08:43 PM GMT 41mins: Arsenal 1 Monaco 0 The offside flag is up but it is another poor finish by an Arsenal player. An outrageous pass by Odegaard into Martinelli and the wide man curls his shot wide. Painfully for Arsenal, had Martinelli scored the goal would have stood because he was onside. 08:42 PM GMT ‘All about Lewis-Skelly’ Saka goal, Jesus assist, but that’s all about Lewis-Skelly in midfield. Spins away from the midfield and slices apart the Monaco defence with the pass to Jesus. 08:41 PM GMT 39mins: Arsenal 1 Monaco 0 Odegaard intercepts a pass from Magassa near the half way line and bursts clear towards goal. The Norweigan has the freedom of the Emirates but he never looks comfortable and fires his shot wide of the far post. A really bad miss. 08:40 PM GMT 38mins: Arsenal 1 Monaco 0 Partey fires a cross into the box, Martinelli tries to redirect it but his effort is wide. Great feet by Lewis-Skelly to beat Akliouche. The teenager slips in Jesus, who times his run well and plays an inch perfect ball across the box to Saka at the far post to tap in. There’s a VAR check but the goal stands. Great move. Bukayo Saka with an easy finish following a brilliant Gabriel Jesus pass 😮💨 Some incredible play from Myles Lewis-Skelly on his first Champions League start 👏 📺 & — Football on TNT Sports (@footballontnt) 08:33 PM GMT 31mins: Arsenal 0 Monaco 0 Yellow card for Martinelli after pulling back Golovin. No arguments with that decision. 08:32 PM GMT ‘Poor Gabriel Jesus’ Poor Gabriel Jesus is having a horrible time in front of goal at the moment. Those two misses mean he has still scored only twice in 2024. Once against Nottingham Forest in January, and then against Preston in the League Cup in October. Safe to say it’s not what you’d expect of a £45 million striker. 08:31 PM GMT 27mins: Arsenal 0 Monaco 0 Another chance for Jesus. Arsenal cut through their defence again and Jesus is through on goal. Kehrer stays tight on him and deflects Jesus’ effort which is saved. Arsenal starting to take over the match now but need a goal to cement their dominance. 08:29 PM GMT 25mins: Arsenal 0 Monaco 0 Glorious chance for Jesus to score his 25th Champions League goal. He spins in behind off a Kiwior long ball. Majecki should come and get it but he stays back and gives the Brazilian a clear sight on goal but the striker’s shot hits the Monaco keeper’s legs. 08:25 PM GMT 24mins: Arsenal 0 Monaco 0 A little bit flat inside the Emirates. Needs a moment to spark fans into life. Odegaard does his best to provide it but again he curls a shot wide. It has been an easy night for Monaco keeper Majecki so far. 08:22 PM GMT 19mins: Arsenal 0 Monaco 0 The Odegaard and Saka combination makes its first impact on the game. Saka finds Odegaard in a bit of space on the edge of the box and the skipper curls an effort over the bar. 08:18 PM GMT 16mins: Arsenal 0 Monaco 0 Early stages but enough signs that this won’t be an easy night for Arsenal. Monaco are happy to press the home side high and play the ball out from the back. 08:14 PM GMT 12mins: Arsenal 0 Monaco 0 Arsenal fans are furious when Embolo goes down. They don’t want the Arsenal players to kick the ball out but Partey eventually does. Of course, Embolo slowly gets himself up eventually. 08:11 PM GMT 9mins: Arsenal 0 Monaco 0 Kiwior fails to clear his lines and Monaco win the ball back. They shift it nicely and Golovin fires a shot just past the post. That’s the closest chance of the match. 08:10 PM GMT 8mins: Arsenal 0 Monaco 0 This is the first time that Rice, Odegaard and Merino have started in midfield for Arsenal and it has been a promising first few minutes for Merino, especially. The Spaniard has worked his way into the left channel a few times already. 08:07 PM GMT 6mins: Arsenal 0 Monaco 0 Another chance for Arsenal. They work the ball well, Martinelli finds Merino in the box and the Spaniard fires in a cross which just evades Jesus in the six-yard box. 08:06 PM GMT 4mins: Arsenal 0 Monaco 0 Arsenal in for the first time. Jesus wins the ball back, Odegaard then slips him in on goal on the left side but his sidefoot finish is a comfortable save for Majecki. 08:03 PM GMT 2mins: Arsenal 0 Monaco 0 An important evening for Gabriel Jesus. Strangely enough, it is a set piece coach. Arsenal’s last three goals have all come from set pieces and Nicolas Jover is the architect of their remarkable success from these corners and free-kicks. Such is Jover’s popularity, he now has his own mural outside the Emirates Stadium. We can’t be certain of this but I would be quite confident in suggesting that he’s the first set-piece coach to ever have such a thing created in his honour. In recent matches the Arsenal fans have been singing “set piece again, ole ole”. It’s all quite good fun, really. The 18-year-old has long been one of the most highly-rated young players in the country and, alongside his close friend Ethan Nwaneri, he is regarded as a player with the ability to become a genuine star of the first-team. Lewis-Skelly came through the youth ranks as a midfielder but is being remoulded by Mikel Arteta as an inverting full-back. It’s a complicated position but Lewis-Skelly is a determined, driven and confident young man. With so many injuries at left-back, this is his big chance. 07:15 PM GMT Best betting sites Betting on the game today? A win for the home side would edge them closer to booking their place in the last-16 of the competition and avoid having a knockout play-off match in February 2025. Arsenal have ten points from their five matches so far, including three victories. Their last match in Europe was a resounding 5-1 win over Portuguese side Sporting. But they come into this match with an injury crisis in defence. Gabriel, Riccardo Calafiori and Oleksandr Zinchenko, Jurrien Timber and Thomas Partey were all absent from open training on Tuesday. With Ben White and Takehiro Tomiyasu also on the sidelines, manager Mikel Arteta may turn to Kieran Tierney at left-back after his recovery from a torn hamstring. Arteta said: “He (Tierney) is ready and he’s training really well and he’s going to have an opportunity for sure with the way the team is looking at the moment. He’s earned it as well with the way he’s behaved and the way he’s been with us because he’s willing to do it and when that happens you have to give opportunities to those kind of players.” Despite their mounting injury issues, captain Martin Odegaard believes they are ready to go all the way and deliver their first ever Champions League title. “That’s the feeling in the squad,” he said. “Everyone believes so much in what we are doing. We have confidence in everything we do as a team. “Last year we learned a few good lessons. We wanted to go all the way (in the Champions League) and we didn’t so we had to take those lessons and make sure we got better. “If you look at the last game (against Sporting) it was a really tough fixture away from home and we did amazingly. That is a sign of improvement. We believe in what we do and hopefully this can be the year.”

European Commodities: What Could End the Bullish Trend for Bank Stocks?
Donald Trump to receive Time magazine's 'Person of the Year' honour
The cordless drill is a staple in the mechanic's toolbox, homeowner's garage, and apartment dweller's emergency repair kit. A drill is a solution for a huge variety of repair, building, and renovation needs. Whether you're installing a new picture frame on the wall or moving the remnants of flood waters with one of Ryobi's coolest products , a hex shank drill pump, your drill is a critical factor. Unfortunately, because of how much use the modern cordless drill sees, it's one of the tools that will need repair or replacement on a fairly regular basis. The chuck may start to come loose after years of heavy drilling, or the motor may eventually give up the ghost, especially if it's a brushed variety. Fortunately, cordless drills are ubiquitous, and a replacement can be found at prices well south of $100 for the most budget-friendly models. Even more sophisticated builds won't run up high into the triple digits. Regardless of your preferred battery system or brand, plenty of great cordless drills are out there to get the job done at a decent price. Even better: Consumer Reports has highlighted a standout group of cordless drills in both compact and heavy duty categories to help DIYers everywhere get the perfect solution to fill their toolbox's missing link. These are Consumer Reports' nine most impressive models, giving you plenty of choice when looking to fill a gap in functionality with one of the best cordless drill options on the market. The difference between an impact driver and a drill might seem minimal at first glance. They both share the same general body shape, but impact drivers are stubbier and show off a different sort of connection point for bit attachment. The hex connection is great for shortening the head to improve versatility, but eliminates the ability to insert a wood or metal drill bit into the tool (although, even if you could, the impact driver isn't a great choice for that kind of task). DeWalt's Xtreme 12V Max Brushless 5-in-1 Drill/Driver offers a solution to anyone grappling with versatility and stout drill construction to reach into tight spaces. The drill features a 15-clutch position selector and four head attachments to produce all manner of angled drilling and driving capabilities. The drill/driver is slight in build but immensely powerful. The tool comes with a standard chuck head as well as a right angle adaptor, and offset and standard hex connection heads for driving-specific jobs. Consumer Reports specifically highlights the brand's reliability and owner satisfaction when it comes to this drill and others in its stable. The kit for the DeWalt drill (Product number: DCD703F1) comes with a 12V battery, so you can get right on whatever project you've got cooking as soon as you unbox the tool. Milwaukee is a perennial contender among tool makers for pole position, regardless of the tool type in question. Milwaukee is a mainstay in modern tool manufacturing, and the brand's not-so-subtle red and black coloration makes it immediately visible on any job site or garage shelf (in truth, the same can be said for other brands' colorways, like DeWalt's blaring yellow accents). Milwaukee's M12 lineup is one component that sets the brand apart from the pack. There are the standard 18V tools in its range that will serve pros and DIYers in a bevy of functions, but the 12V system is in a class of its own. The M12 system is characterized by exceedingly lightweight tool builds that don't lose out on power production or functional capability. Milwaukee's M12 Fuel 1/2-Inch Drill Driver (product code: 2503-22) is a great example of this. Milwaukee calls it the "most capable, lightest weight, most compact tool in its class." With a torque rating of 350 in.-lbs. and a weight clocking in at just 2.3 pounds, the manufacturer might be onto something here. Buying the kit will rope in two batteries (a compact battery and an XC 4.0 battery), an M12 battery charger, and a case to house the drill and its accessories in for on the go productivity and protection while stored. Skil ( once owned by Bosch and purchased by the tool manufacturing conglomerate Chervon in 2017), is yet another titanic name in the world of power tools. Many people today who grew up working with their fathers and grandfathers on home improvement projects will likely know the term "Skilsaw." The Skil brand was such a potent force in the world of circular saw development that it took over its name, and many people still refer to the straight-cutting saw in this way, even if they use a Milwaukee or Makita "Skilsaw" in their projects. The Skil brand makes other tools, of course, and their full range is just as potent and useful as their circular saws. The PWR CORE 12 Brushless 12V 1/2-Inch Drill Driver (Product code: DL529002) is a great example. The Skil brushless drill ships with a 2Ah battery and comes with a five year warranty to give you immediate utility and long lasting protection. Consumer Reports hails its tremendous power output while noting the brand's cut rate price that brings serious cost effectiveness to the fore. CR is, however, critical of the tool's noise output, noting that it's louder than others in its category and won't offer overly impressive runtime in comparison to others. Even so, it's a high quality drill and one that Consumer Reports felt deserved a highlight. Flex's (FX1171T-2B) 1/2-Inch Two-Speed Drill Driver with Turbo Mode is one of Consumer Reports' top picks among heavy duty drills. The Flex model delivers "industry leading torque" rated at 1,400 in.-lbs. for incredible drilling power, even into dense material like concrete or brickwork when paired with masonry bits. The package arrives complete with a case as well as tertiary accessories like a belt clip and bit holder (small touches, but a very nice addition when included and something that feels definitively lacking when left out). It also features a fast charger, side handle attachment and two batteries (a 2.5Ah and 5.0Ah). Consumer Reports heaps high praise on the drill's speed, power, and run time, all features that a premium tool will want to provide in spades. Flex highlights the sensor-free brushless motor housed within the drill, allowing it to produce efficient power while additional technological elements keep the drill cool through intense usage and offer faster charge times than many of its competitors. The drill also packs a turbo mode for faster drilling speeds to power through tough spots and speed up your work rate when necessary. For anyone with a Flex tool in their garage, this drill is a no-brainer, and those considering a swap of brands will want to look seriously at the Flex lineup. Makita is the third of the largest trio of power tool manufacturers that pros and DIYers alike are sure to know well (DeWalt and Milwaukee being the other two). Makita is a company that's kind of a unicorn in the modern industrial landscape. The Japanese toolmaker is still owned by its original parent company , unlike virtually all other brands on the market today. In this way, it's unique among the big dogs, and potentially offers an edge over its competitors for consumers who want to steer clear of conglomerate-owned toolmakers. Fortunately, Makita makes it easy to love its products. The brand produces high tech power tools , rudimentary (yet skillfully crafted) hand tools, and everything in between. Some of its most visible deliverables are in drill format. The prowess of Makita shouldn't go underappreciated, as Consumer Reports names three Makita drills on its list of the best that 2024 has to offer (more than any other brand). Its first offering is the 12V Max CXT Brushless 3/8-Inch Driver-Drill (Product number: FD07R1). The 3/8-inch chuck is smaller than you might be familiar with, but that allows the drill to feature a smaller overall build, making it possible to perform drilling functionality in tighter spaces and maneuver around corners with greater ease. The tool weighs 2.3 pounds, rivalling the M12 Fuel option from Milwaukee, and measures just 6-1/16-inch in length. The power output is slightly lower than Milwaukee's at 280 in.-lbs. of max torque, but still plenty to get general drilling jobs done without a fuss. The BL Brushless motor offers a 50% improvement in runtime through optimized battery functionality, and the kit includes two 12V CXT batteries, a charger, and case for easy storage. A standard drill in all senses of the idea. DeWalt's 20V Max XR Brushless Three-Speed Drill/Driver (Product number: DCD991P2) is a flagship model and exhibits everything a typical drill can and should be. It's not a compact drill, and instead falls within Consumer Reports' heavy duty category. According to the CR rating, it's "one of our best performers across all three drill types, snagging top ratings for power, speed, and run time." The tool has an edge in virtually all categories, although the DeWalt battery packs are larger and heavier than some competitors, leading to a bulkier and weightier tool that may not feel all that balanced in your hand as you perform your drilling tasks. Compared to Milwaukee's High Output batteries that pack huge power and run time into minimized battery packs, DeWalt's offerings are relatively standard in form factor. That's really the only drawback of the drill, however, and other features may more than make up for the heft if you need specialist performance in one realm or another. Perhaps most striking of all the features packed into the XR DeWalt is the third speed option. Even premium drills typically feature two speeds, but a third setting allows users to precisely dial in the clutch and speed settings they need to chomp through heavy materials or delicate workpieces with exacting specificity. The lone Kobalt entry on Consumer Reports' list might surprise some users. While plenty of tool owners will flock to the larger brand names, Kobalt has consistently produces good quality gear while offering prices that can't be matched by its competitors. A Lowe's "house brand," Kobalt is characterized by a deep and vivid blue livery on its tools, and one that frankly grows on you the more you look at it. Another feature of the Kobalt range that consumers cant get enough of: It's ridiculous price tags. The XTR 24V 1/2-Inch Brushless Drill (KXDD 1424A-03) includes a battery, charger, and case, and is ready for use on your project site for just $99. That's pretty unbeatable, especially for a casual DIYer or a homeowner with rudimentary repair needs. Consumer Reports dings the drill for its long battery charge time (85 minutes for a full charge from empty), but praises it for its speed, power, and the run time it provides when the battery is ready to go. The drill features a 24-position clutch for precision dialing in of power delivery and anti-kickback technology to keep the drill from bucking when handling intense loads. And in speaking of the drill's ability to handle intense work, it delivers 1,200 in.-lbs. of peak torque, standing up tall against the big boys, indeed. The smallest chuck connection of the bunch, the Makita 12V Max XCT 1/4-Inch Driver-Drill (Product code: FD06R1) features a quarter-inch hex chuck. This limits functionality a bit, but the drill's 2.1 pound weight and miniaturized overall dimensions make up for the smaller stature of its connection diameter. Consumer Reports names it among the best light duty cordless drills around, even with the unique chuck specifications within the drilling category as a whole. CR also praises the drill on its fast charging capabilities, and consumers finding one of these on the shelves will be pleased to find it comes with a case, charger, and two batteries included as a complete kit. However, it's worth noting that Makita lists the drill as discontinued, meaning buyers may want to act fast on purchasing one, because stocks will only become more limited by the day. Consumer Reports also highlights its relatively light price tag, so anyone coming across one of these driver-drill units may even be able to find an even steeper discount over competitor options given its status as an outgoing tool model. The Makita 40V Max XGT Compact Brushless 1/2-Inch Driver-Drill is the final Makita build listed by Consumer Reports. The heavy duty cordless drill (Product number: GFD02D) tops its list for heavy duty drilling in a three-way tie (alongside the Flex and DeWalt XR models). The Makita drill is the only tool on the CR list that features a truly heavy duty power output, utilizing a 40V battery pack that crosses over into Makita's hefty lawncare tools lineup and imposing construction rated gear. Even with such muscle standing behind the drill, it only weighs 4.2 pounds (nearly a full M12 Fuel or Makita 1/4-Inch drill lighter than the Flex option). Consumer Reports hails its "above average power" and notes that its speedy drilling and driving "earn[ed] top marks in that test." Impressive run time and fast charging round out the drill and make it a high quality option for consumers in the market for a full service cordless drill and not a lightweight niche option. Even with its impressive power output and two-speed gearbox, the tool is still quite short, measuring 6-11/16-inches from chuck tip to back end. The drill also features an "ultra-smooth" variable speed trigger for immaculate control when sinking screws or drilling holes. One week into a new Syria, rebels aim for normalcy and Syrians vow not to be silent again DAMASCUS (AP) — A transformation has started to take place in the week since the unexpected overthrow of Syria’s President Bashar Assad. Suddenly in charge, the rebels have been met with a mix of excitement, grief and hope. And so far the transition has been surprisingly smooth. Reports of reprisals, revenge killings and sectarian violence are minimal, looting and destruction has been quickly contained. But there are a million ways it could go wrong. Syria is broken and isolated after five decades of Assad family rule. Families have been torn apart by war, former prisoners are traumatized, and tens of thousands of detainees remain missing. The economy is wrecked, poverty is widespread, inflation and unemployment are high. Corruption seeps through daily life. Christians in Syria mark country's transformation with tears as UN envoy urges an end to sanctions DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) — In churches across long-stifled Syria, Christians have marked the first Sunday services since Bashar Assad’s ouster in an air of transformation. Some were in tears, others clasped their hands in prayer. The U.N. envoy for Syria is calling for a quick end to Western sanctions as the country’s new leaders and regional and global powers discuss the way forward. The Syrian government has been under sanctions by the United States, the European Union and others for years as a result of Assad’s brutal response to what began as peaceful anti-government protests in 2011 and spiraled into civil war. Israel will close its Ireland embassy over Gaza tensions as Palestinian death toll nears 45,000 DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — Israel says it will close its embassy in Ireland as relations deteriorate over the war in Gaza, where Palestinian medical officials say new Israeli airstrikes have killed over 30 people including children. Israel's decision to close the embassy came in response to what Israel’s foreign minister has described as Ireland's “extreme anti-Israel policies.” Ireland earlier announced that it would recognize a Palestinian state. And the Irish cabinet last week decided to formally intervene in South Africa’s case against Israel at the International Court of Justice, which accuses Israel of committing genocide in Gaza. The Palestinian death toll in the war is approaching 45,000. The GOP stoked fears of noncitizens voting. Cases in Ohio show how rhetoric and reality diverge AKRON, Ohio (AP) — Ohio's Republican secretary of state and attorney general sought to reassure voters before the November election that the state's elections were being vigorously protected against the possibility of immigrants voting illegally. That push coincided with a national Republican messaging strategy warning that potentially thousands of ineligible voters would be voting. The officials' efforts in Ohio led to charges against just six noncitizens in a state with 8 million registered voters. That outcome and the stories of some of those now facing charges show the gap both in Ohio and across the United States between the rhetoric about noncitizen voting and the reality that it's rare and not part of a coordinated scheme to throw elections. South Korean leaders seek calm after Yoon is impeached SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korea’s opposition leader has offered to work with the government to ease the political tumult, a day after the opposition-controlled parliament voted to impeach conservative President Yoon Suk Yeol over a short-lived attempt to impose martial law. Liberal Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung, whose party holds a majority in the National Assembly, urged the Constitutional Court to rule swiftly on Yoon’s impeachment and proposed a special council for policy cooperation between the government and parliament. Yoon’s powers have been suspended until the court decides whether to remove him from office or reinstate him. If Yoon is dismissed, a national election to choose his successor must be held within 60 days. Storms across US bring heavy snow, dangerous ice and a tornado in California OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Inclement weather has plagued areas of the U.S. in the first half of the weekend, with dangerous conditions including heavy snow, a major ice storm and unusual tornado activity. An ice storm beginning Friday created treacherous driving conditions across Iowa and eastern Nebraska. More than 33 inches of snow was reported near Orchard Park, New York, which is often a landing point for lake-effect snow. On Saturday, a tornado touched down in Scotts Valley, California, causing damage and several injuries. In San Francisco, a storm damaged trees and roofs and prompted a tornado warning, which was a first for a city that has not experienced a tornado since 2005. Small businesses say cautious shoppers are seeking 'cozy' and 'festive' this holiday season With a late Thanksgiving, the holiday shopping season is five days shorter than last year, and owners of small retail shops say that people have been quick to snap up holiday décor early, along with gifts for others and themselves. Cozy items like sweaters are popular so far. Businesses are also holding special events to get shoppers in the door. But there’s little sense of the freewheeling spending that occurred during the pandemic. Overall, The National Retail Federation predicts retail sales in November and December will rise between 2.5% and 3.5% compared with same period a year ago. US agencies should use advanced technology to identify mysterious drones, Schumer says After weeks of fear and bewilderment about the drones buzzing over parts of New York and New Jersey, U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer is urging the federal government to deploy better drone-tracking technology to identify and ultimately stop the airborne pests. The New York Democrat is calling on the Department of Homeland Security to immediately deploy advanced technology to identify and track drones back to their landing spots. That is according to briefings from his office. Federal authorities have said that the drones do not appear to be linked to foreign governments. West Africa regional bloc approves exit timeline for 3 coup-hit member states ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) — West Africa’s regional bloc ECOWAS has approved an exit timeline for three coup-hit nations. It comes after a nearly yearlong process of mediation to avert the unprecedented disintegration of the grouping. The president of the ECOWAS Commission, Omar Touray, said in a statement: “The authority decides to set the period from 29 January, 2025 to 29 July 2025 as a transitional period and to keep ECOWAS doors open to the three countries during the transition period." In a first in the 15-nation bloc’s nearly 50 years of existence, the military juntas of Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso announced in January that they decided to leave ECOWAS. Pope Francis makes 1st papal visit to France's Corsica awash in expressions of popular piety AJACCIO, Corsica (AP) — Pope Francis on the first papal visit ever to the French island of Corsica on Sunday called for a dynamic form of laicism, promoting the kind of popular piety that distinguishes the Mediterranean island from secular France as a bridge between religious and civic society. The one-day visit to Corsica’s capital Ajaccio, birthplace of Napoleon, on Sunday is one of the briefest of his papacy beyond Italy’s borders, just about nine hours on the ground, including a 40-minute visit with French President Emmanuel Macron. It is the first papal visit ever to the island, which Genoa ceded to France in 1768 and is located closer to the Italian mainland than France.
