49ers' visit gives Packers a chance to damage the playoff hopes of their postseason nemesisTravis Hunter's odyssey through the college game took him to Jackson, Miss. and Boulder, Colo. On Saturday, he'll reach what in all likelihood will be the final destination of his "amateur" career — San Antonio, of all places. Hunter and his No. 23 Colorado teammates are set to wage battle with No. 17 BYU at the Alamo Bowl. For the newly minted Heisman winner, that means one last opportunity to leave a mark on the national stage. Hunter has already left a lasting legacy in college football's history, garnering praise for his stamina, swiftness of foot, desire to win, and flair for the dramatic. What better place to showcase those attributes than at the Alamodome, one of college football's more under-appreciated landmarks? Hunter and the Buffaloes will have their hands full trying to blot a Cougars side that fell just short of a spot in the Big 12 Championship game. BYU was better than most in the regular season, tallying a 10-2 record while downing Kansas State and SMU on its way to the top. If not for a pair of pesky end-of-season defeats, perhaps the Cougars would be representing the Big 12 in the College Football Playoff. Still, as long as Deion Sanders' side has Hunter, it has a chance. If there's anyone who can shatter all expectations and will his team to victory, it's Hunter. He's done it with relative consistency ever since arriving in the college game. The Sporting News is tracking live updates from Saturday's match between Colorado and BYU at the Alamo Bowl. (AP) — The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are determined to not get ahead of themselves. Sunday’s 30-7 rout of the New York Giants began a six-game, regular season-ending stretch in which the Bucs (5-6) will face five opponents that currently have losing records. The victory coming out of the team’s bye week stopped a four-game skid and moved the three-time defending NFC South champions within one game of first-place Atlanta in the division. The Falcons swept the season series, so the Bucs essentially trail the Falcons by two games with six remaining. They’re in a good position to chase their fifth consecutive playoff berth, but can hardly assume they’ll benefit from having an easy remaining schedule. “We’re hoping it builds confidence. We have belief that we’re still sitting and controlling our own destiny,” quarterback Baker Mayfield said of beating the Giants. “But it’s not just going to happen,” Mayfield added. “So, we have to take it one week at a time. And you find the recipe for success within your work week. ... You try to emulate that week after week and continue to build it.” The Los Angeles Chargers, who entered Monday night’s game against Baltimore at 7-3, are the only opponent remaining on Tampa Bay’s schedule that currently has a winning record. The Bucs will face division rival Carolina (3-8) twice in the next six weeks. They’ll also host Las Vegas (2-9) and New Orleans (4-7) and play the Chargers and Dallas Cowboys (4-7) on the road. “We can’t get comfortable,” rookie running back Bucky Irving said. “We just got to keep our foot on the gas and keep running.” What’s working The offense continues to put up big numbers, finishing with 450 yards against the Giants. It’s the fifth time Tampa Bay has gained more than 400 yards this season. The Bucs have now scored 30-plus points six times, second in the NFL behind Buffalo’s eight. What needs help There wasn’t a lot to fault in the team’s performance against the Giants, although coach Todd Bowles said both the offense and defense could have been done a better job closing out the game late. “For the most part we executed on both sides of the football,” Bowles said. “Still like to have finished the game a little better, but they came back (from the bye week) mentally tougher, and they came ready to play.” Stock up Irving averaged more than 7 yards per carry in rushing for 87 yards on 12 attempts. He also had six receptions for 64 yards, finishing with a season-high 151 yards from scrimmage. Stock down Just when it looked as if the defense was beginning to trend the right way health-wise, the Bucs lost safety Jordan Whitehead (pectoral) and linebacker Joe Tryon-Shoyinka (ankle) to injuries on Sunday. Injuries Bowles said Monday he was still awaiting an update on the severity of Whitehead’s injury. Tryon-Shoyinka has an ankle sprain. LT Tristan Wirfs (knee) sat out against the Giants and his status will be evaluated as the week progresses. Key number 11. With wide receiver Mike Evans back on the field after missing three games with a hamstring injury, Mayfield completed passes to 11 different players, tying a team record. “He obviously changed the game, even when he’s not getting the ball,” Mayfield said. “It’s huge that we have him in.” Next up Winnipeg Jets Game Days On Winnipeg Jets game days, hockey writers Mike McIntyre and Ken Wiebe send news, notes and quotes from the morning skate, as well as injury updates and lineup decisions. Arrives a few hours prior to puck drop. At Carolina, the second of three consecutive games vs. last-place teams the Bucs will face during their stretch run. They’ll also host the Panthers on Dec. 29. “It’s an NFC South battle, and all of them are going to be hard. None of them are going to be easy,” Bowles said. “I think (coach) Dave (Canales) has done an excellent job taking on that team and it’s taking over his personality right now,” Bowles added. “They’re playing pretty good football. ... It’s going to be a tough battle.” ___ AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nfl Advertisement Advertisement

MONTREAL — A childhood friend of the Quebec man killed in a Florida boat explosion Monday said one of the victim's sisters was among the other six passengers injured in the blast. Thi Cam Nhung Lê said 41-year-old Sebastien Gauthier was celebrating the holidays with his family when the explosion occurred in Fort Lauderdale. Lê said Gauthier’s older sister was also on the boat when it erupted into flames, and she was taken to a hospital. “It’s unimaginable, incomprehensible,” Lê said Saturday, adding that Gauthier’s family and mutual friends informed her about his death. Lê, 40, said she first met Gauthier in her early adolescence and they grew up together in Quebec City. She remembers him as a globetrotter who always had a smile on his face. “He’s still my best friend. It’s always him I call if I need something, but he’s no longer with us,” she said. The last time the two friends saw each other face-to-face was about two years ago, Lê said, but she last messaged Gauthier on social media in the days before Monday's explosion. And on Jan. 1, her birthday, she would have expected a call from him, just like every year. “I’m shocked, surprised, and feeling a little bit of regret," she said. "You regret not having seen him more. I spent yesterday crying. You can’t believe your friend disappears from one day to the next." Earlier this week, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission confirmed that Gauthier died of his injuries in Broward County. The FWC said its preliminary investigation in Fort Lauderdale showed a 37-foot vessel exploded after its engines were started, injuring all seven passengers on board. Video posted on social media Monday showed the vessel engulfed in flames, with a thick column of black smoke billowing into the sky. However, Florida authorities have not provided The Canadian Press with more information about the investigation. Searching for an explanation has also left Lê angry. As she mourns the loss of her longtime friend, she said she’s still waiting for answers about what led to his unexpected death. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Dec. 28, 2024. INSIDE WINNIPEG POLITICS: Where is Justin Trudeau? Currier, Koop and Klein predict election dateMaharashtra Polls: Sharad Pawar Opens Up On MVA's Defeat, Ajit Pawar's Performance & Retirement Plans - READSoftware company MicroStrategy has purchased more than $5 billion worth of bitcoin, according to new financial disclosures. On Nov. 25, the Tysons Corner, Virginia, software company said in a Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filing that it had purchased about 55,500 bitcoins for about $5.4 billion in cash between Nov. 18 and Nov. 24. The moves brought its total holdings of the digital currency to 386,700 tokens. At the current price, that translates to about $36.8 billion of holdings. MicroStrategy’s stock crashed following news of the purchase, falling to as low as $383.80 a share in morning trading from an opening price of $440.75. However, as of about midday on Monday, the price recovered to about $405 a share. MicroStrategy describes itself as the “world’s first and largest Bitcoin treasury company,” using cryptocurrency as its primary treasury reserve asset. “We strategically accumulate Bitcoin and advocate for its role as digital capital,” the company said in a recent statement. “Our treasury strategy is designed to provide investors varying degrees of economic exposure to Bitcoin by offering a range of securities, including equity and fixed-income instruments.” In addition, the company makes and sells analytics software. Bitcoin is a cryptocurrency, a digital asset secured via encryption technology in an unalterable and publicly visible way. Cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin make it possible to transfer value online without a bank or payment processor. As a digital asset, cryptocurrency is not backed by governments, central banks, or physical assets. Although bitcoin began as an obscure novelty valued at less than 10 cents per token, its price has exploded over the past decade. As of about midday on Nov. 25, the cryptocurrency was trading at about $95,845 per token. That is a massive increase from the $44,200 per token the digital asset traded for at the beginning of 2024. Bitcoin’s 2024 bull run got a giant boost after Election Day. The price of bitcoin rose by about 39 percent between Nov. 4 and Nov. 25. Bitcoin advocates, such as the political group Stand With Crypto, said voters sent politicians to Capitol Hill who will enact policies more favorable to the ascendant crypto industry. President-elect Donald Trump promised to keep the United States the world’s leader in cryptocurrency. Trump selected Howard Lutnick, a financier with solid ties to alternative cryptocurrency Tether, as his commerce secretary. According to its Monday SEC filing, MicroStrategy has purchased about 197,550 bitcoins in 2024. In a recent appearance on CNBC’s “Squawk Box,” MicroStrategy CEO Michael Saylor said his business makes money by “selling the volatility and recycling it back into bitcoin.” “We expect that [bitcoin’s] going to go up 29 percent a year for the next 21 years. It’s been going up 60 percent a year,” Saylor said on CNBC. “Over the last two weeks, we generated $5.4 billion in BTC gains. We’re making $500 million a day.” In an X post published on Monday, Saylor said its bitcoin purchases delivered an annual yield of about 59.3 percent to the company’s shareholders. If bitcoin’s price were to reach $100,000 per token by the end of the year, Saylor said, that would equate to a yield of $11.2 billion in 2024.
Second baseman Gleyber Torres divulged Saturday that the New York Yankees did not offer him a contract in free agency before he decided to sign with the Detroit Tigers this week. According to MLB.com's Bryan Hoch , Torres said: "After the World Series, I got a lot of phone calls from other teams and just focused to get an opportunity in another place. I feel like I have to play where somebody wants to give the best for me, and I just want to be available to do the best for the team. "I've got great friends there, great communication with the entire organization. I feel proud of myself for being with the Yankees for seven years, but now I'm with Detroit and just really happy they gave me the opportunity to play next year. I think they have other priorities and I'm not on the list. I'm good." After being a key contributor with the Yankees for seven seasons from 2018 to 2024, Torres agreed to a one-year, $15 million deal with the Tigers on Friday, per ESPN's Jesse Rogers .
