New Delhi, Nov 23 (IANS): Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday described the MVA’s drubbing in Maharashtra as “unexpected” and assured supporters that the party would undertake a serious analysis of the adverse outcome. Taking to social media platform X, Gandhi wrote in Hindi, “Maharashtra results are unexpected and we would conduct a detailed analysis.” Interestingly, the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha had expressed similar surprise over the party’s loss in Haryana last month and used the word “unexpected” for the result in the agrarian state as well. Looking to lift the morale of party workers, Gandhi highlighted the INDIA Bloc’s victory in Jharkhand and thanked the voters for their whole-hearted support. “Congratulations to Chief Minister Hemant Soren, Congress and JMM workers for this victory,” wrote Gandhi in Hindi. He went on to claim that the INDIA Bloc’s victory in Jharkhand reflected the triumph of efforts to protect the Constitution and water, forest and land. He also thanked party workers in Maharashtra for their efforts. The Congress could manage just about 15 seats in Maharashtra while the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) secured about 48 seats in the 288-member Assembly. On voting day on November 20, Gandhi appealed to voters of Maharashtra by posting on X: “Brothers and sisters of Maharashtra, I appeal to all of you to vote today for the protection of the state's dignity and the Constitution. Every vote you cast for the Maha Vikas Aghadi will prevent the theft of your jobs and projects, ensure fair prices for farmers' crops, and bring prosperity to your lives through the 5 guarantees.” The results on Saturday came as a blow for both the Congress and Gandhi. There is no denying that Gandhi’s campaign which focused heavily on caste-based rhetoric and Constitutional assurances also came a cropper. One of the key takeaways from this defeat is, many argue, an abject failure of Rahul Gandhi's agenda of the caste census. His promise of breaching the 50 per cent reservation cap has also not worked. The caste calculus that he pushed during the campaign did not win voters’ approval in Maharashtra, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s emphasis on caste unity, encapsulated in the slogan "Ek hain to safe hain," proved more effective. Gandhi’s freebies offer also did not elicit any positive response from the public.

Mr Musk’s guest opinion piece for Welt am Sonntag – a sister publication of Politico owned by the Axel Springer Group – published in German over the weekend, was the second time this month that he has supported the Alternative for Germany, or AfD. “The Alternative for Germany (AfD) is the last spark of hope for this country,” he wrote in his translated commentary. He went on to say that the far-right party “can lead the country into a future where economic prosperity, cultural integrity and technological innovation are not just wishes, but reality”. The Tesla Motors chief executive also wrote that his investment in Germany gives him the right to comment on the country’s condition. The AfD is polling strongly, but its candidate for the top job, Alice Weidel, has no realistic chance of becoming chancellor because other parties refuse to work with the far-right party. Billionaire Mr Musk, an ally of US President-elect Donald Trump, challenged in his opinion piece the party’s public image. “The portrayal of the AfD as right-wing extremist is clearly false, considering that Alice Weidel, the party’s leader, has a same-sex partner from Sri Lanka! Does that sound like Hitler to you? Please!” Mr Musk’s commentary has led to a debate in German media over the boundaries of free speech, with the paper’s own opinion editor announcing her resignation, pointedly on Mr Musk’s social media platform, X. Responding to a request for comment from the German Press Agency, dpa, the current editor-in-chief of the Welt group, Ulf Poschardt, and Mr Burgard – who is due to take over on January 1 – said in a joint statement that the discussion over Mr Musk’s piece was “very insightful. Panchkula: Of the eight white-backed vultures , who were bred in captivity and released in the wild in 2020 at the Jatayu Conservation Breeding Centre (JCBC), Pinjore, four of the birds have survived while four others have died due to different reasons. “Despite challenges, the program’s 50% success rate is encouraging for conservationists,” feel officials. In an encouraging development for conservationists, two of these vultures successfully bred in the wild in 2022-23. Third got paired with a wild vulture and laid an egg. The fourth one was last seen near Dhundmund hill in April 2021. However, there were some adverse cases too as four of the eight birds have died due to varied reasons. One of them died due to electric shock near Mandana turn on December 8, 2020. Another was found vulnerable in Himachal Pradesh and died on May 5, 2021. Third one died due to severe injuries caused in a monkey attack while fourth one died on December 11, 2024, by drowning in an open water tank of a farmhouse near the breeding centre. The JCBC had on October 8, 2020, released these eight vultures with GSM and PTT tags under a meticulous monitoring programme. “The most inspiring achievement of the programme is successful breeding of vultures released into the wild: Tag 180 and Tag L6 gave birth and raised a chick in the wild during the 2022-23 breeding season. This chick, which were born and raised in a completely natural environment, symbolizes India’s great success in vulture conservation ,” said conservationists. “Tag 220 paired with a wild vulture and laid an egg, marking their successful reintroduction. The released vultures adapted quickly. They joined wild flocks, searched for food and water independently, and flew more than 90km per day while reaching altitudes of over 4,000 m,” added officials. “The chick, which found life completely without human intervention, is a ray of hope in vulture conservation. Importantly, no cases of NSAID poisoning were reported, indicating a safe environment for vultures,” they added. For the first time, vultures were released in the wild on June 3, 2016, when former Haryana chief minister Manohar Lal and former Union minister for environment, forest and climate change Prakash Javadekar released two Himalayan Vultures in the wild to test their survival skills. Technology used The PTT and GSM tags are used to understand the behaviour, survival and adaptation of vultures after rehabilitation. These technologies helped track long-distance movements, monitor breeding success and identify challenges such as electrocution. Colourful patagial tags were affixed to the wings of each vulture, carrying unique ID numbers for easy identification. PTT tags send location data via Argos satellites, providing real-time information on a global scale. GSM tags transmit data over the mobile network whenever the tags are within range of the network. Tags are generally effective for 2–3 years, although some may stop working sooner due to technical or environmental reasons.

(TNS) — Amazon Web Services intends to invest an estimated $10 billion to bolster its data center infrastructure in Ohio, creating hundreds of new, well-paying jobs by the end of 2030 and strengthening the state’s role as a major technology hub. The company, along with the Ohio governor’s office, announced the plan Monday. The investment boosts the total the company has committed to spending in Ohio by the end of the decade to more than $23 billion. The $10 billion will allow Amazon to expand its data centers outside of Central Ohio to new sites in communities across the state. The new data centers will contain computer servers, data storage drives, networking equipment, and other forms of technology infrastructure used to power cloud computing, including artificial intelligence and machine learning, the company said in a joint statement with Gov. Mike DeWine. The exact locations for that investment have not been finalized, according to the statement. Investment plans are contingent upon the execution of long-term energy service agreements. “As reliance on digital services continues to grow, so does the importance of data centers; they are critical to today’s modern economy,” DeWine said in the announcement. “AWS’s substantial investment in Ohio will help keep our state at the forefront of the global technology.” Amazon Web Services’ growth is part of o. The centers consume huge amounts of electricity to run. Google has described them as “the engines behind the digital services” that “help keep the Internet up and running.” Consumer-facing brands like Amazon, Google and Meta all have developed centers, as well as less familiar names like Quality Technology Services and CyrusOne. From the outside, they can look like large factories. Inside, they often employ 20 to 30 or so workers when operational. State and local governments have granted hundreds of millions in tax breaks for the development of the centers. Grid operators, though, worry the facilities could overburden the available power supply. Last year, Amazon . That was on top of $6 billion already invested through 2022. Amazon opened its first Ohio data center in 2016 and has since invested $10.3 billion in Ohio. The company estimates it has contributed about $3.8 billion in total gross domestic product to the state between 2015-2023. Today’s announcement brought the company’s planned investment in Ohio between 2015 and the end of 2030 to more than $23 billion. This represents the second-largest planned investment by a single private sector company in the state’s history, the governor’s office said, after being built outside Columbus. “Today, we reaffirm our long-term commitment to Ohio with plans to invest an additional $10 billion to expand our data center infrastructure in greater Ohio to drive innovation in AI for customers,” Roger Wehner, vice president of economic development at Amazon Web Services, said in a statement. “This expanded investment is expected to create new, well-paying jobs, boost Ohio’s GDP, and further cement our partnership with the state. We are also proud to continue expanding the reach of workforce development and educational programs that equip Ohio’s next generation of tech talent through strong public and private partnerships.” JobsOhio President and CEO J.P. Nauseef said Monday that Amazon Web Services’ investment has helped make Ohio one of the nation’s foremost technology centers, helping to attract business innovators to the state. JobsOhio was one of multiple economic development teams collaborating with Amazon to support the expansion. “AWS was the first major cloud provider in our state and their success has helped pave the way for the explosive growth we’re seeing now,” Nauseef said in a statement. ©Germany is to vote in an early election on February 23 after Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s three-party governing coalition collapsed last month in a dispute over how to revitalise the country’s stagnant economy. The search and rescue organization for Metro Vancouver's North Shore mountains is warning people to do their research after two international visitors became stranded while relying on hiking apps to plan their routes. Allan McMordie with North Shore Rescue managed the Sunday night rescue of a man from Goat Ridge, a backcountry area behind Grouse Mountain. He said the man told rescuers he had not been expecting snow, despite two of the local ski hills opening with fresh powder last month. "All you had to do was look at the top of the mountains from Vancouver and know there's snow up there," he said in an interview. "To be in running shoes and not even expecting any snow was pretty naive." The man from France had set out on a marked route, then decided to make his way through very rough, steep terrain to a separate trail at significantly higher elevation. "This is rugged backcountry," McMordie said. "It's almost impassable." McMordie could not confirm which apps the hikers in both recent rescues were using, but said a lack of any marked route or trail reports is a good indication not to use the application. In any case, he said trip planning should involve multiple sources for information. If the man from France had done any research, McMordie said he would have discovered the backcountry area where he was rescued is closed for the winter. In both recent cases, he said there are signs at each trailhead with maps showing trails and topography, along with reminders about key steps in trip planning, he said. Both men were lucky to have been able to make 911 calls, McMordie added, as service is patchy in the area and their phone batteries had nearly run out. Above all, he said hikers should tell someone else where they're going and when they expect to return, so that person can alert local authorities if necessary. "Absolutely nobody knew where this person was and what he was doing that day," McMordie said of the man from France. "If he had not been able to get that (911) call out, he would still be there." Sunday's rescue on Goat Ridge came three days after a similar call, when another man "seriously underestimated the difficulty" of a route marked in an online hiking app, North Shore Rescue said in a statement posted to social media. The group said there is "barely a trail" in the summer and "nothing whatsoever" in the winter, making for "full mountaineering conditions" at this time of year. The man called for help after hiking for eight hours that left him "tired, soaked (and) hypothermic" as the sun was setting," it said. It's doubtful the man would have survived the night in the Mount Seymour backcountry if he hadn't been able to make the call, the rescue group added. The man had been staying in a short-term accommodation and had taken an Uber to the trailhead. Only his girlfriend in Norway knew where he was, and he was not wearing or carrying adequate gear for the conditions, McMordie said. Vancouver-based Stephen Hui, the author of several B.C. hiking guidebooks, said the rough, mountainous terrain steps away from urban Metro Vancouver and the extent of the snowpack in winter is a surprise for many visiting hikers. Hui said online apps can be helpful and often provide commentary about trail conditions from other hikers, but it's crucial to look at additional sources of information, including complete maps and provincial and national park websites. He said local authorities and outdoor groups have some responsibility for people heading into the backcountry, and there is room for more signage and education. Ultimately, though, he said people must be responsible for themselves. "We can't handhold everybody," he said. "There's always going to be dangers in hiking." Online child exploitation spiked during lockdowns. Police worry it's here to stay

Anthony hits winning layup with 0.2 seconds left, Magic complete 17-point rally to beat Nets 102-101TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — A large number of mysterious drones have been reported flying over New Jersey and across the eastern U.S., sparking speculation and concern over where they came from and why. New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy and U.S. Sen. Andy Kim have both gone out on drone hunts, hoping for answers. The FBI, Homeland Security, state police and other agencies are investigating. Murphy and law enforcement officials have stressed that the drones don’t appear to be a threat to public safety , but many state and municipal lawmakers have nonetheless called for stricter rules about who can fly the unmanned aircraft — and to be allowed to shoot them out of the sky. Federal authorities said Monday evening that the reported drone sightings have been identified as legal commercial drones, hobbyist drones and law enforcement drones, as well as manned aircraft, helicopters and even stars. Officials said that assessment was based on technical data and tips. The House Intelligence Committee grilled federal law enforcement and intelligence officials about the drones during a closed-door meeting Tuesday, Democratic U.S. Rep. Jim Himes of Connecticut told CNN. Authorities told the panel there still is no evidence of public safety or national security threats, Himes said. Dozens of witnesses have reported seeing drones statewide since mid-November, including near the Picatinny Arsenal, a military research and manufacturing facility, and over President-elect Donald Trump’s golf course in Bedminster. Murphy, a Democrat, said Monday that drone-detection equipment supplied by the federal government has yielded little new information. He declined to describe the equipment except to say it was powerful and could even disable the drones, though he said that’s not legal on U.S. soil. Murphy urged Congress to give states more authority to deal with the drones. Meanwhile, the FBI and New Jersey state police warned against pointing lasers at suspected drones, because aircraft pilots are being hit in the eyes more often. Authorities also said they are concerned people might fire weapons at manned aircraft that they have mistaken for drones. The growing anxiety among some residents is not lost on the Biden administration, which has faced criticism from Trump for not dealing with the matter more aggressively. White House national security spokesman John Kirby said Monday the federal government has yet to identify any public safety or national security risks from any of the reported drone sightings in the northeast, saying officials believe they were lawfully flown drones, planes or even stars. “There are more than 1 million drones that are lawfully registered with the Federal Aviation Administration here in the United States,” Kirby said. “And there are thousands of commercial, hobbyist and law enforcement drones that are lawfully in the sky on any given day. That is the ecosystem that we are dealing with.” The federal government has deployed personnel and advanced technology to investigate the reports in New Jersey and other states, and is evaluating each tip reported by citizens, he said. About 100 of the more than 5,000 drone sightings reported to the FBI in recent weeks were deemed credible enough to warrant more investigation, according to a joint statement by the Department of Homeland Security, FBI, Federal Aviation Administration and the Department of Defense. Speculation has raged online, with some expressing concerns that the drones could be part of a nefarious plot by foreign agents. Pentagon spokesperson Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder said it's unlikely the drones are engaged in intelligence gathering, given how loud and bright they are. And he repeated Tuesday that the drones being reported are not being operated by the Department of Defense. Asked whether military contractors might be operating drones in the New Jersey area, Ryder rebuffed the notion, saying there are “no military operations, no military drone or experiment operations in this corridor.” Ryder said additional drone-detecting technology was being moved to some military installations, including the Picatinny Arsenal and at Naval Weapons Station Earle in New Jersey, where drones also have been reported. Two men have been charged with trespassing, breaking and entering and violating a municipal ordinance or bylaw after police said a drone was flown “dangerously close” to Boston's Logan International Airport on Saturday night. An officer used drone monitoring technology detected the aircraft and the location of the operators on an island in Boston Harbor. The Boston-area men pleaded not guilty to all charges in court Monday and were released pending a Feb. 6 court date. The judge banned them from flying drones. A third suspect is at large. Authorities said the men broke into an abandoned hospital campus on the island. One of the men admitted to police he had been flying a drone and said it was in his backpack. An investigation of the drone's serial number produced data that shows it was flown six times on Saturday. Michael Martin, a lawyer for one of the men, said his client is a drone hobbyist who is interested in abandoned buildings and that the drone footage will support this. Trump has said he believes the government knows more than it’s saying. “Let the public know, and now. Otherwise, shoot them down!!!” he posted on Truth Social. Kim said he’s heard nothing to support the notion that the government is hiding anything. He said a lack of faith in institutions is playing a key part in the saga. “Nothing that I’m seeing, nothing that I’ve engaged in gives me any impression of that nature. But like, I get it, some people won’t believe me, right? Because that’s the level of distrust that we face," Kim said Monday. Sen. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut last week called for the drones to be “shot down." Monmouth County Sheriff Shaun Golden said members of the public must not try to shoot down drones, as that would violate state and federal laws.
