Dobbins unlikely to play against Falcons because of knee injuryThe future of hydrogen as a credible source of energy is under scrutiny in a new University of Manchester study It has just published ‘ On Hydrogen ’, which provides expert analysis , evidence and policy recommendations to tackle the UK ’ s key hydrogen policy challenges . In a foreword , Baroness Brown of Cambridge , Chair of the House of Lords Science and Technology Select Committee , warns that “ the hydrogen bubble has burst .” The North West region is at the forefront of hydrogen technology . In October this year the Government announced that HyNet , in the North West , had been given the green light to unlock the decarbonisation of industry and growth across the North West and North Wales industrial heartlands . It was part of a £ 22bn pledge , over the next 25 years , for projects to capture and store carbon emissions from energy , industry and hydrogen production , focused on two ‘ carbon capture clusters ’ on Merseyside and Teesside , which are forecast to create thousands of jobs , attract private investment and help the UK meet climate goals . The milestone was officially announced by the Prime Minister , Chancellor and Secretary of State for Net Zero and Energy , at Encirc , an international glass production plant and partner of HyNet , and part of the Spanish – based glass manufacturer , the Vidrala Group . Bottle manufacturer , Encirc , is situated at Elton , in Cheshire , which will create the world ’ s first net zero glass bottles at scale , by 2030 . Prime Minister , Sir Keir Starmer , said on the day that the move would “ reignite our industrial heartlands ” and “ kickstart growth ”. However , writes in the 21 – page ‘ On Hydrogen ’ report : “ The trouble with bubbles is that once they have burst , it takes time for industry , governments and investors to regain confidence and take the subjects seriously again .” Despite this , she warns that hydrogen must be taken seriously with a series of pressing industry tasks – such as the decarbonisation of steel making and the production of sustainable synthetic fuels – dependent on the use of green hydrogen . Baroness Brown acknowledges that numerous challenges lie ahead in developing a low carbon hydrogen industry . But adds : In her piece , the crossbench peer – who also serves as Chair of the Carbon Trust , and the Adaptation Committee of the Climate Change Committee – argues that “ low carbon hydrogen , especially green hydrogen , can be a green growth opportunity for the UK .” writes : continues : ‘ On Hydrogen ’, from Manchester University ’ s policy engagement unit , Policy @ Manchester , features seven articles from academics including research – led advice on areas such as the production of hydrogen , storage of hydrogen , decarbonisation of industry and transport , and the future role of hydrogen interconnectors . the latest news shaping the hydrogen market at The future of hydrogen as a credible source of energy is under scrutiny in a new University of Manchester study, US Air Force unveils hydrogen megaproject: It would be in the most extreme place on Earth In a bid to strengthen national energy security and improve operational efficiency, the U.S. military is exploring hydrogen... OTTAWA - NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh says he won’t play Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre’s games by voting to bring down the government on an upcoming non-confidence motion. The Conservatives plan to introduce a motion that quotes Singh’s own criticism of the Liberals, and asks the House of Commons to declare that it agrees with Singh and has no confidence in the government. The motion is expected to be introduced on Thursday and the debate and vote are set for Monday. Singh says he is not going to vote non-confidence and trigger an election when he believes Poilievre would cut programs the NDP fought for, like dental care and pharmacare. The non-confidence vote was scheduled after Speaker Greg Fergus intervened to pause a filibuster on a privilege debate about a green technology fund. The Conservatives have said they would only end that debate if the NDP agree to topple the government or if the Liberals turn over unredacted documents at the centre of the parliamentary gridlock. No, James Franklin doesn’t have a lot of time to watch NFL games each weekend. He’s understandably focused on his 10-1, No. 4 Penn State team that is one win away from essentially clinching the program’s first College Football Playoff berth. Even so, it’s been hard for him to miss the recent heroics Saquon Barkley has performed with the Philadelphia Eagles. First it was a video-game-like backward hurdle against the Jacksonville Jaguars , which actually did make its way into EA Sports’ Madden 25 not long ago. Sunday night, the former Nittany Lions running back and 2017 Heisman Trophy finalist set an Eagles single-game record with 255 rushing yards against the Los Angeles Rams . Barkley had 302 total yards from scrimmage against the Rams, breaking another franchise record. He last hit such a feat against Iowa in Penn State’s dramatic 21-19 win in 2017. Franklin said Wednesday night after Penn State’s practice that he’s seen plenty of highlights and he and that his wife, Fumi, have texted with Barkley this season. “It’s an example of, he’s at a really good place. Really well-run organization, arguably the best O-line coach in the NFL, behind arguably one of the best offensive lines,” Franklin told reporters inside Holuba Hall. “And we all knew — I mean, we all knew, right? — that given the opportunity and put in a favorable situation, he’d have a chance to maximize it.” The New York Giants drafted Barkley with the second overall pick in the 2018 draft. He became the 2018 Offensive Rookie of the Year but battled injuries that marred his time in New York. The Giants let him walk in free agency this offseason, and he signed with the division-rival Eagles on a three-year, $37.75 million contract. In his first year in Philadelphia, the Coplay, Pennsylvania, product leads the NFL with 1,392 rushing yards and is tied for fourth with 10 rushing scores. The yardage is already a career-high with six games left to play, while he’s one score away from tying his career-high in rushing touchdowns. “I think the other thing with him that the Eagles are learning and I talked to them about, is as good of a player he is, he’s just as good, if not a better, teammate. That’s unusual,” Franklin said. “To have that type of guy in your locker room and that type of leader and that type of presence on your team, it’s a force multiplier in a lot of ways.” And now after such a hot start, there’s some serious MVP buzz for Barkley. DraftKings is giving him the third-best odds behind Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen and Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson. “I’m not surprised,” Franklin said. “Proud. Happy. And it’s also cool that he’s doing it here. It’d be cool if he was doing it on the West Coast, but it’s even cooler he’s doing it right here in his backyard. There’s a huge crossover contingent of Penn State fans and Eagles fans, which is cool. I’m just happy for him and the Eagles organization. It’s a win-win for everybody, which is really, ultimately, what you want.” BETTING: Check out our guide to the best PA sportsbooks , where our team of sports betting experts has reviewed the experience, payout speed, parlay options and quality of odds for multiple sportsbooks. Take climate tech: it’s a category of companies and technologies that, broadly speaking, seek to minimize or reverse our impact on the climate while also helping us adapt to its increasing changes. As terms go, climate tech is actually not bad since it defines the sector’s focus in two words. It’s certainly better than its predecessor, clean tech. It’s what startups that today fall under the climate tech banner would have likely called themselves just over a decade ago. It wasn’t a very good descriptor, though. To the uninitiated, clean tech just as easily could have meant robot vacuums or novel household supplies. Climate tech is much easier to grasp. But climate tech is about a decade old, and humans also like to feel like they’re at the vanguard of something new. That, plus climate tech’s scope has grown to the point where it’s getting a bit unwieldy. Some have begun to explore alternatives over the past year or so. Planetary health emerged as an early alternative, first coined in the medical journal The Lancet in 2014. Some investors embraced it , in part to address the problem of scope creep. Plenty of companies don’t seek to address carbon pollution, but are still focused on technologies that would address humanity’s impact on the planet. It has its appeal, but most people have stuck with climate tech. Then Donald Trump was elected for a second time. “Climate” hasn’t exactly transformed from a buzzword into a dirty word, but people are actively talking about distancing themselves from the term. You can try to fight it if you want, but the migration had actually begun before the election. In five years, we’ll be calling climate tech something else entirely. What’ll it be? People have started throwing stuff at the wall to see what sticks. Planetary health is an obvious alternative; it’s descriptive and has an early lead. The American dynamism platform contains a clean energy plank, but that term is associated with a single VC firm — a16z, whose partner Katherine Boyle coined it and runs a practice under that name — and there’s a lot of other stuff packed into it, including defense, public safety, education, housing, and more. Frontier tech is another, though if you thought climate tech was too broad, you definitely won’t like how much frontier tech encompasses. Critical infrastructure? That overlaps with climate tech, but the Venn diagram isn’t a perfect circle. Deep tech is another that wraps around climate tech, but involves a lot more like AI, robotics, and quantum computing. The most recent proposal was growth tech . It’s not my intention to throw stones, but I just can’t see it catching on. It’s too generic — aren’t all venture-backed startups seeking growth? — and it doesn’t capture the gist of what these startups are pushing for. Is it likely that climate tech will unleash a wave of growth and industrial innovation? You don’t have to look much further than China to understand that. But I think there are better terms. Since I’m not one to critique without offering a solution, here’s mine: If we really need a term, I’m going to suggest resilience tech. It’s not perfect, and I’ll probably think of something better in the future. But for now, I think it’ll do. It captures the gist of what climate tech is driving at: to make both the world and humanity more resilient.
On Dec. 2 Second Minister for Foreign Affairs, Maliki Osman, attended the Cairo ministerial conference to enhance the humanitarian response in Gaza, hosted by Egypt in Cairo. In his speech, Maliki, who is also Minister in the Prime Minister's Office and Second Minister for Education, said that more is needed to be done to address the dire humanitarian conditions in Gaza. While in Cairo, Maliki also met with the Palestinian prime minister and foreign minister, Mohammed Mustafa, Egypt’s foreign minister, Badr Abdelatty, as well as other foreign dignitaries present at the conference. Humanitarian relief and ceasefire During his conference speech Maliki spoke about Singapore’s concerns about the humanitarian situation in Gaza, its call for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire, and preparations and hopes for the future, should a ceasefire be called. These points were elaborated on during a doorstop interview that the minister held after the conference. During the doorstop, he elaborated on the humanitarian situation, noting that winter was “fast approaching”, and that the people in Gaza would need better shelter and warm clothing, in addition to the already insufficient food and essential supplies. Maliki also noted that this was true for the remaining hostages in Gaza, who were taken hostage during the Oct. 7 2023 attacks on Israel by Hamas more than a year ago. During the doorstop, he reiterated Singapore’s call for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire, and also the immediate, safe, and unconditional release of all remaining hostages. S$18 million for relief efforts During his speech and the doorstop, he said that Singaporeans and the Singapore government had collectively donated more than S$18 million in cash and in-kind donations for relief efforts in Gaza. Maliki had gone to Egypt in November 2023 to hand over the first tranche of that aid, while Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan was present for the handover of the third tranche, which had been accompanied by an aircraft from the RSAF in March 2024. He paid tribute to the various regional partners that had helped Singapore’s relief efforts, such as Egypt, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Cyprus. He also encouraged Singaporeans to continue contributing to fundraising efforts by reputable organisations such as the Rahmatan Lil Alamin Foundation and the Singapore Red Cross. Maliki shared that the conference had spoken not just about raising aid for Gaza, but also the difficult logistics of delivering that aid to Gaza, but also within Gaza. Massive future needs Maliki also spoke about the future. He said that efforts towards a ceasefire were ongoing but difficult, but even should such a ceasefire be achieved, “the future needs of Gaza will be massive”. Singapore stood ready to join the international community “in supporting the Palestinian people as they seek to rebuild their lives” after the ceasefire is reached. Maliki touched on some of the efforts that had been made by Singapore through its Enhanced Technical Assistance Package (ETAP). ETAP supported the Palestinian Authority, which is the governing body that controls the Palestinian territories of the West Bank, and its capacity-building efforts. The programme would be expanded from an annual offering of three postgraduate scholarships in Singapore, to five undergraduate and five postgraduate scholarships, which Singapore hoped would contribute to the PA’s human capital development efforts, in preparation for eventual statehood. 60 years of diplomatic relations Maliki also met several local and foreign dignitaries while in Cairo, including Abdelatty. Abdelatty posted about the meeting on social media, describing Singapore and Egypt diplomatic ties as strong, and that the two friendly nations aspired to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations in 2026. He also hoped to advance various areas of bilateral cooperation to broader horizons. Singapore is the fifth largest Asian investor in Egypt, with over US$ 700 million (S$941 million) in investments in the country. Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt's commitment to enhancing these investments and increasing bilateral trade exchanges. Abdelatty welcomed the continued and enhanced cooperation in the cultural field, particularly the provision of Egyptian expertise to Singaporeans and students at the Al Azhar University, “ supporting efforts to promote the moderate approach to Islam in Singapore”. Meanwhile, the Singapore Cooperation Programme has also trained about 700 Egyptian officials. Maliki also met with the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Palestine, the foreign ministers of Bahrain, Jordan, and Lebanon, and Malaysia’s deputy foreign minister. EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP) — Los Angeles Chargers running back J.K Dobbins is unlikely to play against the Atlanta Falcons this week because of a knee injury. Dobbins was hurt in the first half of the Chargers’ 30-23 loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Monday night. He had six carries for 40 yards and three catches for 19 yards before leaving the game. Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh declined to get into specifics of the injury Wednesday, other than confirming Dobbins is “working through something with his knee,” he said. Dobbins had been putting together a strong first season for the Chargers (7-4) after his past three years in Baltimore had been injury-riddled. He has 766 yards rushing and eight touchdowns through 11 games for Los Angeles, which had positioned Dobbins as a strong candidate for AP Comeback Player of the Year. Dobbins tore his Achilles tendon in the 2023 season opener for Baltimore. He also tore his ACL in 2021, and the effects of that injury lingered into the following season. Dobbins played in just 24 of a possible 67 regular-season games for the Ravens, who drafted him in the second round in 2020. “We feel horrible for him,” quarterback Justin Herbert said. “He’s such a tough, tough teammate, and the way he’s fought through so many injuries, we have no doubt he’s going to be back better than ever. And so it’s up to us. It’s our responsibility to hold it down while he’s gone.” The absence of Dobbins leaves Gus Edwards, Hassan Haskins and rookie Kimani Vidal as the Chargers’ current options at running back. Edwards missed four games because of a high ankle sprain and has 206 yards and one touchdown in seven appearances. Haskins has mostly been a special teams contributor, while Vidal has been inactive for seven games, including each of the past three. Some kids see their parents as monsters — making them eat their vegetables, insisting homework be done before dinner, begging them to clean their room, etc. You know, the worst. In the case of Ellian, a princess from the land of Lumbria, her parents literally are monsters — unsightly, rambunctious and uncommunicative creatures — thanks to an encounter with some dark magic. That’s the state of royal play in “Spellbound,” a semi-enchanting film from Skydance Animation on Netflix. The movie had a chance to be a gem thanks to some of the folks who brought it to life. The list starts with director Vicky Jenson, who, most notably, helmed 2001’s beloved romp “Shrek.” Then there’s composer Alan Menken — working herewith lyricist Glenn Slater — who has contributed to animated Disney classics including “The Little Mermaid,” “Aladdin” and “Beauty and the Beast.” And singing the original songs of Menken and Slater is Rachel Zegler, who delighted us in director Steven Spielberg’s 2021 remake of “West Side Story” and last year impressed in “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes.” These talented people and others — John Lithgow, Nicole Kidman and Javier Bardem contribute voice work — help make “Spellbound” a relative winner even if it falls short of the quality of the aforementioned animated films. As we meet Ellian (Zegler) — on her birthday, flying through mountains, above water and eventually back to the kingdom with her friends riding giant birds — she and a few others, such as Lithgow’s Minister Bolinar, have been keeping the truth about her parents a secret from the citizens and even some important types. Ministers Bolinar and Nazara (Jenifer Lewis) think it is time for Princess Ellian to become the ruler of Lumbria, but she hasn’t given up on the idea of finding a way to break her parents’ curse, which they encountered in the Dark Forest of Eternal Darkness — where it’s, like, seriously dark. She summons to the castle the Oracle of the Moon (Tituss Burgess) and the Oracle of the Sun (Nathan Lane), a pair of little guys who arrive by Uber-like frog. Before they can reveal how the curse can be broken, her mom tries to eat one of them, causing them to bolt. Ellian chases them down, of course, and, with Mom and Dad in tow, sets about her quest to return them to normalcy. As the three spend time together, Ellian is able to communicate, increasingly effectively, with Queen Ellsmere (Kidman) and King Solon (Bardem). It is then that we see the darkness that surrounded them was not just figurative; the more intelligently they can speak, the more they argue with one another. Despite this friction, Ellian continues a search for a source of lightness — again, both literal and metaphorical — to restore things as they should be. Penned by Lauren Hynek, Elizabeth Martin and Julia Miranda, “Spellbound” offers some valuable lessons to young viewers — for whom this film is mainly targeted — including the importance of handling negative feelings in a positive way. There’s also a lesson for parents, however. If nothing else, the not-so-neat-and-tidy resolution of the story isn’t exactly what you’d predict. You just wish the journey were a little more entertaining. The jokes are OK, not hilarious, and the songs are merely fine — certainly below Menken’s best work. Nevertheless, Zegler’s lovely singing voice elevates those songs, and the actress gives a strong performance overall. And Lithgow — who voiced the villainous Lord Farquaad in “Shrek” — is fun, especially after Bolinar runs afoul of some magic himself. With its bright-and-colorful palette (but only so-so design work), “Spellbound” should keep the little ones busy for nearly two hours as you prepare for Thanksgiving. And that’s a real magic trick, isn’t it? Get local news delivered to your inbox!Three years ago, a then-6-year-old boy named Ben discovered a strange rock on a beach in Sussex, England. He took it home, but then lost track of it. Now, the object has been identified for what it really is: a 50,000-year-old Neanderthal hand ax. When James Sainsbury , curator of archaeology and social history at Worthing Theatres and Museum, received an email from Ben's mother about her son's find, he didn't expect the object to be anything special, Sainsbury told Live Science. "I get emails like this all the time, especially about beach finds, and they're usually just pebbles that look funny," he said. "But as soon as I saw the photo, I thought, 'That's an Upper Paleolithic Neanderthal hand ax.' It's an absolutely incredible find." Neanderthal hand axes are relatively small and dark two-sided flints, which makes them recognizable, according to Sainsbury. They're clearly distinct from the Middle or Lower Paleolithic finds in Sussex. Neanderthals used these tools for activities such as breaking bones to suck out the marrow. Related: 65,000-year-old hearth in Gibraltar may have been a Neanderthal 'glue factory,' study finds Sainsbury specifically identified the artifact as a Mousterian hand ax, meaning "it's from that very late Neanderthal period when their days were really numbered in Europe and Britain." He added that some scholars even suggest that Mousterian hand axes were made by the last Neanderthal generations in that area. "As far as Sussex is concerned, it's really quite rare," Sainsbury said. "In our museum, we have one example and one only. They're extremely rare because presumably the Neanderthal population density was very low ." On Nov. 24, Ben and his family brought the artifact to the Worthing Museum, where Sainsbury confirmed that it was, in fact, a Neanderthal ax. Because of how "fresh" and undamaged it looks, he suspects the artifact had been buried safely underwater for most of its history. "It's very unlikely it would have made it onto shore, at that height on the beach, without it being damaged," he explained. "So I think it was brought in with tons of shingles to increase the beach defenses either from the English Channel, where it would have been dredged from an old riverbed that's now submerged, or from the North Sea, in the area of Doggerland." — 'More Neanderthal than human': How your health may depend on DNA from our long-lost ancestors — Neanderthals and modern humans interbred 'at the crossroads of human migrations' in Iran, study finds — Neanderthals and early Homo sapiens buried their dead differently, study suggests Doggerland is a now-submerged region beneath the North Sea that was inhabited by prehistoric people before the land was flooded by rising sea levels about 8,000 years ago. Sainsbury and his co-workers are still investigating when the last batch of pebbles was deposited on Shoreham beach. "Ben is 9 now and really knew his stuff — his Bronze Age from his Iron Age from his Romans ," Sainsbury said. "He clearly has a real interest in archaeology ." Ben loaned the hand ax to Worthing Theatres and Museum, and Sainsbury had it on display just an hour after meeting with Ben's family. It will remain there until February, and the curator was happy to report that it has already been attracting more visitors than usual.
Pet passports for dogs, cats and ferrets to travel within UK ‘an outrage’Matt Gaetz is now giving pep talks and holiday wishes on CameoNEW YORK (AP) — Sean “Diddy” Combs was denied bail on Wednesday as he awaits a May sex trafficking trial by a judge who cited evidence showing him to be a “serious risk” of witness tampering and proof he has tried to hide prohibited communications with third parties while incarcerated. U.S. District Judge Arun Subramanian ruled in a five-page order following a bail hearing last week. At the hearing, lawyers for the hip-hop mogul argued that a $50 million bail package they proposed would be sufficient to ensure Combs doesn’t flee and doesn’t try to intimidate prospective trial witnesses. Two other judges previously had agreed with prosecutors that the Bad Boy Records founder was a danger to the community if he is not behind bars. Subramanian concurred. “There is compelling evidence of Combs's propensity for violence,” Subramanian wrote. Lawyers for Combs did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment on the decision. Nicholas Biase, a spokesperson for prosecutors, declined comment. Combs, 55, has pleaded not guilty to for years, aided by associates and employees. An indictment alleges that he silenced victims through blackmail and violence, including kidnapping, arson and physical beatings. A federal appeals court judge last month denied Combs’ immediate release while a three-judge panel of the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan considers his bail request. That appeal was put on hold while Subramanian, newly appointed to the case after an earlier judge stepped aside, considered the bail request for the first time. Subramanian said he took a fresh look at all the bail arguments and the evidence supporting them to make his decision. Prosecutors have insisted that no bail conditions would be sufficient to protect the public and prevent the “I'll Be Missing You” singer from fleeing. They say that even in a federal lockup in Brooklyn, Combs has orchestrated social media campaigns designed to influence prospective jurors and tried to publicly leak materials he thinks can help his case. They say he also has contacted potential witnesses through third parties. Lawyers for Combs say any alleged sexual abuse described in the indictment occurred during consensual relations between adults and that new evidence refutes allegations that Combs used his to induce into drugged-up, elaborately produced sexual performances with male sex workers known as “Freak Offs.” Subramanian said evidence shows Combs to be a “serious risk of witness tampering,” particularly after he communicated over the summer with a grand jury witness and deleted some of his texts with the witness. The judge also cited evidence showing that Combs violated Bureau of Prisons regulations during pretrial detention at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn when he paid other inmates to use their phone code numbers so he could make calls to individuals who were not on his approved contact list. He said there was also evidence that he told family members and defense counsel to add other people to three-way calls so their communications would be more difficult to trace and that he made efforts to influence his trial's jury pool or to reach potential witnesses. Subramanian said his “willingness to skirt” jailhouse rules to conceal communications was “strong evidence” that any conditions of release would not prevent similar behavior. The judge said defense claims that Combs stopped using one particular phone technique criticized by prosecutors was belied by the fact that Combs apparently used it again on Sunday, two days after his bail hearing last week. Even a bail proposal that would include the strictest form of home confinement seemed insufficient, the judge said. “Given the nature of the allegations in this case and the information provided by the government, the Court doubts the sufficiency of any conditions that place trust in Combs and individuals in his employ — like a private security detail — to follow those conditions,” Subramanian wrote. Larry Neumeister, The Associated PressEbonyi State Government has denied reports published in some sections of the media, alluding that it spent a whooping N1.1 billion on wildlife conservation. The State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mr Jude Okpor, made this refusal in a Statement issued in Abakaliki. There were social media publications alleging that the state government allocated N1.1bn to wildlife conservation in nine months, which was reportedly less than the amounts spent on health and water provisions in its 2024 budget. Okpor clarified that the N1.1bn, was an amount allocated for a contingency item, coded under “margin for increase in cost and wildlife conservation” in the approved budget. “The publication is, to say the least, not well-researched and devoid of any iota of truth, the writer obviously failed to carry out adequate investigations necessary to authenticate his report” “Without bearing any grudge or prejudice against the author of the publication, but in full understanding of his ignorance, we wish to clarify as follows” “First, the amount N1.1bn recorded against wildlife conservation is an amount meant for a contingency item, which the approved budget has coded under margin for the increase and not wildlife conservation” “Secondly, we wish to clarify that the approved budget has a different template from the Quarterly Budget Implementation Report template” The Statement added, “It should also be clarified that projects and programmes recorded under contingency, are not initially envisaged but arise during budget implementation” “We therefore urge the general public, particularly those who may refer to such a document as advanced by the publication to be guided” “We are ready and well-disposed to making a copy of an extract from the state’s approved budget available to any interested member of the public for reference purposes.
