NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec 20, 2024-- High-speed internet provider Gateway Fiber connected its first Northampton home internet customers this week, marking a significant step forward in expanding reliable, high-speed internet access across underserved communities in western MA and beyond. “We are thrilled to bring Northampton into the Gateway Fiber family and light our first home internet customer in the area, so they can experience the revolution of truly high-speed internet,” said Gateway Fiber CEO Chris Surdo. “In today’s internet-dependent world, having reliable high-speed internet is no longer a luxury; it’s a necessity. And we’re proud to bring that level of connection to Northampton.” With symmetrical internet speeds up to 2 gigabits per second (Gbps), Gateway Fiber’s fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) service is designed for seamless video streaming, online gaming, remote work, and quick upload and download for cloud services. This new fiber service offers residents and businesses in Northampton a welcome alternative to traditional cable. Gateway Fiber’s fast and reliable network enhances productivity, supports smart home technology, and ensures a smooth online experience for multiple users and devices. “Gateway Fiber is a revelation,” said Northampton resident and new Gateway Fiber customer Will A. “Their customer support is great, and their technicians were skilled, thorough, and conscientious during installation. They brought their own disposable shoe covers to avoid tracking mud into the house, and that alone says a lot about the kind of company they are. Oh, and the internet is blazing fast! Our previous internet was marketed as the same speed (300mbps), but in reality, Gateway Fiber got us way faster speeds for a cheaper price. There's no comparison. Gateway Fiber is the best internet and the best internet company in Northampton.” Gateway Fiber not only provides incredible high-speed internet to both homes and businesses, but the company is also investing heavily in the Northampton community and surrounding area by hiring local team members and opening an office in nearby Chicopee. “Our commitment to the area goes much deeper than just providing fast internet,” said Sarah Lang, Gateway Fiber’s GM of Massachusetts. “By building a robust fiber optic network starting in Northampton, we not only support the local economy but also empower residents and businesses to achieve more with a service that is built to meet their needs, today and moving forward.” For more information about Gateway Fiber internet, visit gatewayfiber.com or @gatewayfiber on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and LinkedIn. CONAKRY, Guinea (AP) — Chaos erupted at a soccer game in Guinea after fans protested a referee’s call and thousands of panicked spectators tried to flee the stadium, leaving at least 56 people dead in the West African nation, officials and witnesses said Monday. Amid the confusion, security forces used tear gas, local news website Media Guinea reported. Many of the dead were crushed as they tried to escape through the stadium gates, a journalist covering the game for a local sports website told The Associated Press. “The gates, that’s where the stampede happened,” said Cissé Lancine, who got away by climbing over one of the stadium walls. “I was saved because I did not rush towards the exit." The world's latest sports crowd disaster unfurled Sunday in the second-largest city in a military-run nation where information is sparse and government-controlled at the best of times. It was not immediately clear how much the death toll could grow. Lancine said between 20,000 and 30,000 people were present at the Third of April stadium to watch the local Labe and Nzerekore teams compete in the final of the first national tournament honoring military leader Mamadi Doumbouya. Checkpoints were set up Monday throughout Nzerekore, a city of about 200,000 that was at a standstill as soldiers guarded the hospital where victims were being treated. Most shops were closed. Video, apparently from the scene, showed shouting fans protesting the refereeing. People ran as they tried to escape the stadium, many of them jumping the high fence. “Supporters threw stones. This is why the security services used tear gas,” reported Media Guinea, which also wrote that several of the dead were children and some of the injured were in critical condition. The footage showed people lying on the floor of a hospital as members of a crowd helped the wounded. Enock Loua, a resident of Nzerekore, learned over the phone that his niece Aline Olivier had been killed. "We have a hard time realizing what happened to us, it is as if the sky has fallen on our heads,” Loua told The Associated Press. Authorities are trying to establish who was responsible, Prime Minister Amadou Oury Bah said on national television. The National Alliance for Alternation and Democracy opposition coalition said the tournament was organized to drum up support for Doumbouya's “illegal and inappropriate” political ambitions. Doumbouya, who ousted then-President Alpha Conde in 2021 , has been eyeing a possible run for the presidential election, for which the date has not been set. The transition charter put in place by his own regime does not allow him to run. Guinea is one of a number of West African countries — including Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso — where the military has taken power and delayed a return to civilian rule. Doumbouya said he was preventing the country from slipping into chaos and chastised the previous government for broken promises. He has, however, been criticized for not meeting the expectations that he raised. Guinea’s leader announced three days of national mourning starting on Tuesday, in a presidential decree read on national television. girlfriend, , appears to have confirmed the 72-year-old will head to college football after links emerged that he would be joining the University of North Carolina Tar Heels. Reports said that the six-time Super Bowl champion head coach could be the option to replace overnight but were tipped as unlikely, until the 24-year-old seemed to hint at their truth via social media. began following several accounts affiliated with the Tar Heels program on Instagram, going far beyond what a typical fan would do by even following the UNC football nutrition account. So her actions appear to have given validity after he claimed the former New England Patriot served up a 400-page dossier about how he would run the Athletics, described as a "bible" by the Guardian reporter. "With structure, payment plans, staffing choices, etc. "The University of North Carolina is expected to make its decision within the next 24 hours." Belichick's shocking move The switch would come as a shock to even those close to the coach, with all previously suggesting he wouldn't pick up a job a step below the NFL. Ivana Bacik had separate meetings with Fianna Fail leader Micheal Martin and Fine Gael leader Simon Harris on Tuesday afternoon. Fianna Fail, which won 48 seats in last month’s general election, and Fine Gael, which secured 38 seats, headed up the last coalition in Dublin and are expected to continue that partnership into the next mandate. However, with a combined 86 seats, they are just short of the 88 required for a majority in the Dail parliament. If they wish to return to government together, they would need one smaller party as a junior partner, or a handful of independents. Both Fianna Fail and Fine Gael have ruled out doing business with Sinn Fein, which won 39 seats. The centre-left Social Democrats and Irish Labour Party, both of which won 11 seats in the election, are seen as the only two realistic options if Fianna Fail and Fine Gael seek to convince a smaller party to join the coalition. In a statement, the Labour Party said Ms Bacik outlined key policy priorities in her meetings with Taoiseach Mr Harris and Tanaiste Mr Martin. “There was discussion in both meetings on policies and manifesto commitments on housing, health, climate, workers’ rights and disability services among other issues,” said the statement. “The parliamentary party will meet at 1pm on Friday where the party leader will provide an assessment of engagement to date and consider the outcome of these meetings.” A spokesman for Mr Harris said there had been a “constructive engagement” with Ms Bacik. “The Taoiseach is grateful for the time and engagement on a range of substantial policy issues,” he said. The spokesman said Mr Harris had also met independent TDs who are aligned together in what is called the regional group. “These meetings have been productive,” he added. Mr Harris and party colleagues are due to meet the Social Democrats on Wednesday. Fianna Fail deputy leader Jack Chambers and Fine Gael deputy leader Helen McEntee met on Tuesday evening for discussions on government formation, with the parties’ full negotiating teams set to meet on Wednesday. Fine Gael said the meeting between Ms McEntee and Mr Chambers was “positive” and focused on the “structure and format” of the substantive negotiations going forward. When the two parties entered coalition for the first time after the last general election in 2020, there was only a three-seat difference in their relative strength. That resulted in an equal partnership at the head of the coalition, with the Green Party as the junior partner. The two main parties swapped the role of taoiseach halfway through the term. With Fianna Fail’s lead over Fine Gael having grown to 10 seats following this election, focus has turned to the future of the rotating taoiseach arrangement and whether it will operate again in the next mandate and, if so, on what basis. There are similar questions around the distribution of ministries and other roles. While Mr Martin has so far refused to be drawn on the specifics, he has suggested that he expects Fianna Fail’s greater strength of numbers to be reflected in the new administration. However, Mr Harris has insisted that Fine Gael’s mandate cannot be taken for granted when it comes to government formation. Richard Boyd Barrett from People Before Profit-Solidarity, which won three seats, urged Labour not to “prop up” up a Fianna Fail/Fine Gael administration. “We think that’s a huge mistake,” he told reporters in Dublin. “They shouldn’t do it. They should learn the lessons of the past and actually work with other parties of the left to form a decent left opposition to Fianna Fail and Fine Gael and campaign on the issues that matter.” His party colleague Paul Murphy pointed to the experience of the Green Party, which lost all but one of its 12 seats in the election. “In reality, what is going to happen is a changing of the mudguard for Fianna Fail and Fine Gael,” he said. “And for those who are now auditioning to be a new mudguard for Fianna Fail and Fine Gael, there is a very, very sharp and stark lesson in what happened to the Green Party – obviously almost entirely wiped out. “We think it is a very major mistake for anyone who has the perception of being left, with the votes of people who are looking left, to seek to go into coalition with Fianna Fail and Fine Gael.”

For Cyber Monday, Best Buy has substantially reduced the price tag on the Asus ProArt PZ13, making its new price $850 . The Asus ProArt PZ13 is an artistically-aligned laptop available at Best Buy for $1,100. It's ready to help pro-level artists with its vibrant OLED touchscreen, long battery life, and supportive apps. The device is held back by a limited array of ports and a substandard keyboard. A couple of months ago, I tested out Microsoft's Surface Pro 11 , a laptop that doubles as a tablet. It has Qualcomm's next-gen chipset and a lot of great features that made me enjoy the machine. I highly recommend it to business professionals who frequently travel. It seems Asus must've seen the Surface Pro and thought to itself, "We can do better." The result of this inspiration is the Asus ProArt PZ13 . Also: Best Cyber Monday deals live now I mentioned the Surface Pro 11 because the two share many similarities, although the ProArt model is better suited for artists and creative professionals. Asus ProArt PZ13 Asus' new ProArt PZ13 laptop is a lightweight machine that punches well above its weight class. Qualcomm's energy-efficient Snapdragon X SoC can take on the toughest of tasks. Upon lifting the laptop out of its box for the first time, you'll be greeted with a 13.3-inch, 3K (2880 x 1800 pixels) OLED touchscreen. Its resolution isn't as high as Microsoft's laptop, although the ProArt PZ13 more than makes up for this with image-enhancing apps. It has Dolby Vision, support for the entire DCI-P3 color gamut, and VESA DisplayHDR True Black for ultra-dark shadows. Everything works together to ensure a stunning visual experience, except for the 60Hz refresh rate. That's a fine speed, but I would've liked to have 120Hz. At 60Hz, motion and animations on this laptop can look a little blurry. Also: One of the most versatile laptops I've tested is a crowd-pleaser with solid hardware The device has a really neat feature called Creator Hub. It's a dashboard app that lets you adjust the PZ13 on the fly. The most impressive of its many tools is Color Control, which lets you change the on-screen color gamut at any time. For example, the DCI-P3 option tweaks the colors so they're best suited for movies while Display P3 is recommended for artists as it more accurately displays hues. You can even adjust the color temperature. Creator Hub gives creative professionals a great amount of flexibility. Although I'm not an artist myself, I certainly appreciate having the ability to fine-tune my experience instantly. Asus' machine is no slouch either, as inside the ProArt PZ13 is a Snapdragon X Plus chipset. I was able to maintain about 60 tabs open without experiencing any major slowdown. I had videos playing and Twitch streams running, and I could still check out my email without any issue. Sadly, I couldn't get a specific benchmark number on the SoC (system on a chip). None of the major benchmarking tests have been updated for the Snapdragon X, but hopefully, that day will come soon. Also: This lightweight laptop has one of the best displays I've seen, and it's not a MacBook Air Like other Qualcomm-based laptops, the ProArt PZ13 has a ridiculously long battery life, and for once, the marketing materials were correct. This device ran for over 21 hours straight when on the Best Power Efficiency mode. I left it on overnight and was shocked to see it was still active in the morning. On Best Performance mode, the model manages to outperform most Intel-based laptops, as it lasted for about 14.5 hours on a single charge. These battery times are perfect if you ever need to take the ProArt PZ13 on the road. There's no need to worry about the laptop dying on you at the worst moment. The tablet is 0.35 inches thick and weighs a little under two pounds. Asus throws in a muted-green protective cover with the purchase. The cover adds some bulk to the device, although not by much. It'll fit snugly inside a bag. As much as I like Asus' new computer, I didn't like the ProArt PZ13's keyboard. Asus states it has a 1.4mm key travel distance. On paper, that should ensure a good typing experience, but I felt the keyboard was flimsy. Pressing a key bends the accessory a bit. Also: One of the longest-lasting laptops I've tested also has a gorgeous display Furthermore, there are very few ports. You get three in total: two USB-C inputs and an SD card reader. Granted, the device is somewhat thin, so perhaps Asus couldn't find room for any more ports. Still, it could've at least included a headphone jack. My last critique is admittedly a nitpick. I would've appreciated a free stylus in the overall package. Microsoft's 11th-gen Surface Pro had one when I got it, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. So unless you already have a pen, you'll have to buy one for the PZ13, which isn't a big issue since the laptop is fairly cheap. ZDNET's buying advice Prices for the Asus ProArt PZ13 start at $1,100 on Best Buy , which is a steal. There is a more powerful version available on Asus' website -- for $1,649 , you can purchase a ProArt PZ13 sporting Qualcomm's Hexagon NPU, delivering extra power. Other than that, they're the same device. Get the Hexagon version only if you are expecting heavy workloads. How we test laptops We use a combination of methods to test laptops here at ZDNET. First, we acquire data from benchmarking software to analyze a system's metrics under the hood, and compare those to advertised numbers. Then, we spend an extended amount of time with the laptop (usually a week or two) using it the same way a typical consumer would, in order to analyze its portability, form factor, and how well the battery actually holds up, among others. For an extensive breakdown, check out our comprehensive laptop testing methodology . Benchmarking: We run a series of tests to put the computer's hardware through the wringer in order to see what it's capable of. Cinebench is one of the most commonly-used hardware testing suites, which tests the laptop's rendering performance on single and multiple CPU cores. PCMark 10 is another powerful program that covers a wide variety of tasks performed in the workplace. Processor: The "brain" of the laptop, and one of the most important factors that determines performance. This is tested in benchmarking software. The display: Brightness is measured in "nits," and color spectrums are tested in benchmarking software. The graphics processor (GPU): We test the GPU with a combination of benchmarking software, gaming, and media playback. Physical form factor: We carry the laptop around for at least a week and note how well it commutes. Battery testing: We test a unit's battery in a few ways. A handful of benchmarking programs have their own battery testing components, but we also will just let the laptop run for as long as it can under a medium load. The human element: As we mentioned earlier, metrics and system data is important, but numbers alone don't give you the full picture. This is where we weave in our personal experience with the device and tap into the practical use cases that consumers actually care about. Ultimately, our goal is to break down the capabilities of each and every laptop we test into digestible terms that people find useful. One of the best QLED TVs I've tested isn't made by Samsung or Hisense (and it's $500 off) I finally found a wireless Android Auto adapter that's reliable, functional, and affordable This is the most bizarre portable power station I've tested - and it actually works One of the best cheap soundbars I've tested performs as well as models twice its price

HOBBY Lobby lost out on a sale after its limited payment options had pushed one shopper to ditch their selections. Following the customer's outburst over the lack of Apple Pay , an employee warned other shoppers to be prepared. Launched in 2014, Apple Pay is a mobile payment system that permits shoppers to make secure, contactless payments via an iPhone, Apple Watch, or iPad. The tap-to-pay service works with credit and debit cards from American Express , MasterCard , and Visa . The payment method is accepted by over 90% of retailers in the US, per Capital One Shopping , but the remaining percentage of stores without it has some shoppers up in arms. One Hobby Lobby shopper had gathered all her items and brought them to checkout to be promptly informed by the cashier that the arts and crafts store did not accept Apple Pay. Read More On Retail Annoyed by the prospect of having to go to her car and retrieve her wallet, the customer left her items on the checkout counter and walked out. The cashier immediately turned to the next customer in line before they could unload their items and warned them that the retailer did not accept Apple Pay. In-store and online: Visa MasterCard Discover American Express Hobby Lobby Gift Cards Online only: PayPay Apple Pay Although Hobby Lobby doesn't accept Apple Pay in-store, shoppers can pay via the mobile payment system online. BAD APPLE Hobby Lobby isn't the only retailer that has yet to integrate Apple Pay into its card readers. Most read in Money Major companies such as Amazon , H-E-B, Cabela's , and Bass Pro Shops have not fully implemented the tap-to-pay service. Walmart is also on the short list of retailers that don't accept Apple Pay, which has left many customers frustrated. Endless numbers of Walmart shoppers have called out the chain on social media for its outdated point-of-sale terminals. "Walmart not having Apple Pay has to be the most dumbest most inconvenient *$%# to ever exist," fumed one customer . "Even Dollartree has Apple Pay," pointed out another shopper.
