When Sean Payton first arrived as Denver’s coach in 2023, he quickly set about putting his stamp on just about everything in the organization. That meant many changes to the roster, but two constants emerged over his first and second offseasons: Invest in the offensive line and don’t be afraid to get rid of the franchise’s old guard or big names. The Broncos went big in free agency in 2023, . They went deep on cuts to those who had been around longest or made the most, from kicker Brandon McManus to guard Dalton Risner and eventually safety Justin Simmons, and receiver Jerry Jeudy. For most of that time, they left Garett Bolles in limbo. The veteran left tackle and 2017 first-round draft pick played a premium position and did it well. But he also watched as many teammates were unceremoniously let go. He watched as some others earned contract extensions as — and with whom — they wanted to set the franchise’s foundation. Bolles appeared to be caught between the early cuts and the must-keeps. He came within four regular-season games and a potential playoff run of free agency for the first time in his career. But ultimately, he earned the tag he’d worked to convince Payton he was worthy of: Foundational player. The Broncos made that official when they signed the 32-year-old Bolles to a four-year contract extension Thursday and ties him to Denver through the 2028 season. “I had to prove myself,” Bolles said Thursday. “It was a new coaching staff and I knew Coach Payton and he has a certain way about players and certain offensive schemes and I had to adjust some things over the years. “It always takes a little bit for people to love me and to fall in love with me, but I just have to trust that process and the good Lord always had a plan for me and it was for me to be here in Denver.” For most of Bolles’ tenure, it looked like this might not happen at all. Denver could have extended him in the spring or even added void years to soften his $20 million salary cap hit, but instead left him to play out the final year before free agency. Talks finally ramped up after the Broncos’ Week 13 Monday night win against Cleveland, and perhaps fittingly so. Bolles controlled All-Pro edge rusher Myles Garrett for the second straight season. “My agent was keeping me in the loop here and there but I knew I had to play good football to get it,” Bolles said. He’s done that. And in the process, he’s put himself in position for something even rarer than working from the periphery into the core of Payton’s vision for the future of this team. He’s set himself up to potentially be a Bronco for life. “I didn’t want to go anywhere else,” Bolles said. “I could have. I could have hit free agency and earned more money or whatever it is. I never cared about money. I care about a legacy. I think legacy speaks volumes about the type of man. I wanted to create a legacy here.” As the team finished practice Thursday, the group circled up as usual and Bolles’ extension was announced. The news drew roars. In the locker room afterward, teammates spoke glowingly about his dedication and his level of play. “I’m so happy for GB and his family,” right tackle Mike McGlinchey said. “It’s so well deserved and obviously he’s having an unbelievable year. You’ve seen his growth under this staff and under this new group here and the steps he’s taken to become the player he is have been awesome. And he got rewarded for it.” Now the entire Broncos offensive line is under contract through the 2025 season and all but center Luke Wattenberg are through at least 2026. That doesn’t mean the group will necessarily remain intact the entire time, but it sets Denver up to have continuity on its front line. “I haven’t had consistency here,” Bolles said Thursday. “It’s new coach, new offensive line coach, new left guard, new quarterback. It’s just gone on and on and on. You can’t win games doing that and I think Coach Payton understands that. He’s been around this league a long time and it starts with the offensive line. “The more consistency you have up front, the better you play.” Denver’s got that now. The unit is playing at a high level. Bolles is seventh and McGlinchey 11th among tackles in while center Luke Wattenberg (No. 2) and guards Quinn Meinerz (No. 7) and Ben Powers (No. 11) are all among the top 11 in the metric among interior offensive linemen. As a group, they regularly top analytic models regarding pass blocking and in ESPN’s team win rates they check in No. 1 against the pass-rush and No. 5 in run blocking. The answer might be that you're not, and it might be better to take a temporary break, says Justin Jones-Fosu, author of “I Respectfully Disagree: How to Have Difficult Conversations in a Divided World.” “You have to assess your own readiness,” he says, “Each person is going be very different in this.” He emphasizes that it's not about taking a permanent step back. “Right now is that moment that we’re talking about because it’s still so fresh. Christmas may be different.” DON’T miss the bigger picture of what the holiday is all about Keep focused on why why you decided to go in the first place, Jones-Fosu says. DO set boundaries If you decide getting together is the way to go, but you know politics is still a dicey subject, set a goal of making the holiday a politics-free zone and stick with it, says Karl Pillemer, a professor at Cornell University whose work includes research on family estrangement. “Will a political conversation change anyone’s mind?" he says. “If there is no possibility of changing anyone’s mind, then create a demilitarized zone and don’t talk about it.” DON’T take the bait Let’s be honest. Sometimes, despite best efforts and intentions to keep the holiday gathering politics- and drama-free, there’s someone who’s got something to say and is going to say it. In that case, avoid getting drawn into it, says Tracy Hutchinson, a professor in the graduate clinical mental health counseling program at the College of William & Mary in Virginia . “Not to take the hook is one of the most important things, and it is challenging,” she says. After all, you don’t have to go to every argument you’re invited to. DO think about what will happen after the holiday If you risk getting caught up in the moment, consider engaging in what Pillemer calls “forward mapping.” This involves thinking medium and long term rather than just about right now — strategy rather than tactics. Maybe imagine yourself six months from now looking back on the dinner and thinking about the memories you'd want to have. “Think about how you would like to remember this holiday,” he says. “Do you want to remember it with your brother and sister-in-law storming out and going home because you’ve had a two-hour argument?” DON'T feel you have to be there uninterrupted Things getting intense? Defuse the situation. Walk away. And it doesn't have to be in a huff. Sometimes a calm and collected time out is just what you — and the family — might need. George left Philly’s loss to the Memphis Grizzlies with a hyperextended left knee. He suffered the injury after an opponent bumped into him while going for a rebound . The good news is George’s injury does not seem to be too serious, for now. The Sixers said in a press release that an MRI showed no structural damage to Paul’s knee. Additionally, the 34-year-old forward will miss two games and then be re-evaluated. George suffered a similar left knee injury in the preseason that caused him to miss the first five games of the regular season. He has only played in 8 games so far this season and is averaging just 14.9 points per game on 38.3 percent shooting. This is George’s first season with the 76ers after spending the last five with the Clippers. Philly has begun 2-12, which has been a nightmare start. Officials have missed several obvious facemask penalties this season, including two in a three-week span during Thursday night games. “When we see it, because I see it like yourselves and the fans, I have an opportunity to see it from a different angle and see it from a slow-mo,” NFL executive Troy Vincent said Wednesday at the league’s winter meetings. “When you think about the position of where the officials are, things are happening so fast. Sometimes the facemask can be the same color as the gloves. There’s a lot happening. Concerning? Yes, because that’s a big miss. That’s a big foul. That’s why we would like to consider putting that for the membership to consider putting that foul category that we can see, putting that (penalty flag) on the field to help. There is a frustration, and we believe that is one category we can potentially get right." Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold was grabbed by his facemask and brought down in the end zone to end Minnesota’s comeback attempt against the Rams on Oct. 24. But there was no call. On Oct. 3, officials missed a facemask on Buccaneers running back Bucky Irving while he ran for 7 yards late in the fourth quarter. Tampa Bay instead was called for holding on the play, got forced out of field-goal range and Kirk Cousins rallied the Falcons to an overtime victory. “That is one this year, the facemask seems like it was the obvious one” Vincent said. “That keeps showing up.” Vincent also cited hits on a defenseless player, tripping, the fair catch, an illegal batted ball, an illegal double-team block, illegal formations on kickoffs and taunting as other areas that warrant consideration for replay assist. Current rules only allow replay assist to help officials pick up a flag incorrectly thrown on the field, or in assisting proper enforcement of a foul called on the field. The NFL’s Competition Committee will review potential recommendations for owners to vote on for expanding replay assist. Vincent was emphatic about the league’s desire to eliminate low blocks that could lead to serious injuries. “The low block below the knee needs to be removed from the game,” Vincent said. “You look at high school, you look at college, too. Every block should be above the knee, but below the neck. All the work that we’ve done for the head and neck area, all the things that we’ve taken out of the game, this is the right time for us to remove the low block out of the game. Be consistent with high school. Be consistent with college. Every block should be above the knee and below the neck.” The league will consider changes to the onside kick after dramatically overhauling the kickoff rule on a one-year basis. “We need to look at that. That’s a dead play,” Vincent said of the onside kick’s low success rate. “That is a ceremonial play. Very low recovery rate. When we look at the kickoff and maybe where the touchback area should be during the offseason, we need to revisit the onside kick.” Options include giving the team an opportunity to run one play to gain a certain number of yards to keep possession. The Washington Commanders’ search for a new stadium site includes options in Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia, and work has escalated on one in particular. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and controlling owner Josh Harris met with lawmakers on Capitol Hill last week about the RFK Stadium site in Washington, which requires a bill getting through Congress to transfer the land to the District government before anything else can happen. “I think there’s a bipartisan support for this,” Goodell said, adding he’d like to see it get to a vote soon. “We hope that it will be addressed and approved so that it’s at least an alternative for the Commanders if we go forward.
