LISBON For the first time in its history, Türkiye has signed a contract to export military ships to a member of both the EU and NATO, Portugal. Under the agreement, signed Tuesday in Lisbon, Türkiye will design and build two auxiliary oiler replenisher and logistics vessels for the Portuguese Navy, with Ankara-based defense technologies company STM serving as prime contractor. The contract signing ceremony was attended by STM General Manager Ozgur Guleryuz, as well as the head of Türkiye's Undersecretariat for Defense Industries (SSM), Haluk Gorgun, Portugal's Chief of Naval Staff Adm. Henrique Gouveia e Melo and Carlos Felix, representative of the Portuguese Defense Industries Agency. Speaking at the event, SSM Secretary Gorgun emphasized Türkiye’s priority to strengthen defense industry cooperation with NATO allies. Türkiye, one of the world's 10 countries capable of building its own warships, is now exporting them to friendly and allied nations, Gorgun said. "These two ships will enhance the Portuguese Navy’s operational effectiveness at sea, improve its resilience, and enable it to respond swiftly to various missions, including humanitarian efforts, training exercises, and joint operations with other allies," he added. Adm. Gouveia e Melo highlighted the potential for deeper defense collaborations between Türkiye and Portugal, particularly in maritime and unmanned systems. "These collaborations can help both nations reach new markets and contribute to their economies, technological sovereignty, and capacities as allied countries," he said, also underscoring the strategic importance of Türkiye's Black Sea gateway and Portugal's position at the Mediterranean’s western entrance. STM’s Guleryuz noted the company’s significant contributions to the Turkish Navy via locally designed and produced platforms, as well as its involvement in naval projects for Ukraine, Malaysia, and Pakistan. Ship features and capabilities With their innovative design and versatile mission functionality, the logistics support ships will be capable of performing joint power transfer, amphibious operations, and replenishment at sea. The construction of the replenishment at sea and logistics support ships, regarded as a milestone in showcasing Türkiye's advanced military naval engineering, will feature a modular design. Thanks to their modular, unique, and adaptable structures, the ships will also support tasks such as humanitarian aid, search and rescue missions, and serving as hospital ships during crises. Equipped with an integrated communication system, the ships will provide command and control capabilities. The construction of the vessels, which will feature higher speed and cargo capacity compared to other ships of similar size, will begin in Türkiye in 2025 under STM's leadership as the prime contractor. The ships will measure 137 meters in length, have a displacement of 11,000 tons, and achieve a maximum speed exceeding 18 knots. They will be capable of continuous operation at sea for up to 90 days, accommodating 100 onboard personnel and an additional 100 external personnel. The ships will also have the capacity to carry up to 20 light tactical armored vehicles and will be equipped with sensor and weapon systems for various combat scenarios, particularly air defense. Key armaments will include close-in air defense systems, 12.7-millimeter remote-controlled weapon systems, and chaff/decoy systems. Additionally, the ships will feature platforms and hangars to accommodate helicopters and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

The 2024 Los Angeles Rams have the most expensive offense in the league. This offense was supposed to be the engine that drove the team into the playoffs while the young and patch-worked defense found its footing. But that hasn’t been the case. They are putting up almost 332 yards per game, good for 17th in the league, and are 20th in the NFL scoring 21 points per game. They aren’t even scoring well by efficiency stats, a staple of the Sean McVay offense. They are 14th in DVOA and EPA per play. Health was the scapegoat early in the season, but the Rams’ offense has played with nearly a full slate of intended starters over the last three weeks and it hasn’t improved the offense in any statistical measure. Bleacher Report’s scouts looked into what could solve the Rams issues and they were as perplexed as McVay seems to be. Here is what they wrote about the ‘odd point’ the Rams are at at this point of the season. No Fixes For Rams Problems They seemed to settle on a functional offensive-line grouping in Week 11, placing rookie Beaux Limmer back at center and Warren McClendon Jr. at right tackle. However, the line was again a major liability against Philadelphia. Unfortunately, the free-agent market isn’t exactly overflowing with starting-caliber linemen. Getting tight end Tyler Higbee back will help the offense some, but the Rams are pretty much who they’re going to be in 2024. The best they can do from here on out is try to get more experience for young players such as Jordan Whittington , Blake Corum, Jaylen McCollough and Kamren Kinchens. L.A. must walk a fine line between staying competitive and developing talent for the future. The Rams find themselves at an odd point where it wouldn’t make sense to lean too heavily in either direction. This loss of contact triggered an extensive search operation, highlighting the challenges faced in deep-sea rescue missions. The search for the Titan, which took place 420 nautical miles from the nearest port and spanned an area of 13,000 square kilometers—roughly double the size of Connecticut—illustrates the difficulties of underwater searches. Such operations often require weeks, particularly in remote areas. Fortunately, a Canadian vessel with a remotely operated underwater vehicle located the Titan debris field just four days later. High-resolution sonar tech In response to these challenges, a research team from MIT Lincoln Laboratory and the MIT Department of Mechanical Engineering’s Ocean Science and Engineering lab is developing a groundbreaking sonar system to revolutionize deep-sea search missions. Named the Autonomous Sparse-Aperture Multibeam Echo Sounder, this new technology could significantly shorten search times from weeks to days. The innovative echo sounder operates from the surface, using a small fleet of autonomous surface vehicles (ASVs) that can be deployed via aircraft. This approach allows for vast-area scanning at surface-ship speeds while delivering the high-resolution imagery typically associated with underwater vehicles. According to co-principal investigator Andrew March, “Our array combines high resolution with extensive coverage, enabling us to map the ocean floor much more efficiently.” Traditional sonar systems generally face resolution issues due to the limitations of low-frequency sound waves, which are necessary for deep-sea explorations since water absorbs high-frequency waves quickly. Current methods utilizing large sonar arrays from ships can return low-resolution images, where each pixel could represent an area the size of a football field. In contrast, autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) that operate at higher frequencies produce much sharper images but are expensive and time-consuming to deploy, limiting mapping capabilities. This new sonar technology promises to combine the benefits of both methods—maintaining high resolution while covering larger areas quickly. The sonar array is anticipated to map the seabed at significantly enhanced resolution and faster coverage rates than currently possible. Deep-sea mapping Understanding our oceans is critical. Oceans remain insufficiently explored, covering about 71 percent of the Earth’s surface, with more than 80 percent of the underwater terrain still largely unknown. We have better knowledge of other planets’ surfaces than the depths of our oceans. High-resolution seafloor maps are essential for various applications: they could help locate missing vessels, bolster our understanding of geology, improve ocean current and weather forecasting, reveal archaeological sites, and monitor marine ecosystems. Globally, scientists and governments recognize the critical need for high-resolution seafloor mapping, yet existing technologies need help to achieve the necessary accuracy from the surface. The average ocean depth stands at around 3,700 meters, but most scanning technologies are limited to less than 1,000 meters in range. The current technologies include sonar, lidar, cameras, and gravitational field mapping, all of which have limitations based on depth and resolution. The advancements the new MIT sonar system promised could transform our approach to deep-sea exploration and rescue operations. As we stand on the brink of a new era in ocean science, the potential for improved mapping and understanding of deep-sea environments could lead to significant breakthroughs in many fields. The work illustrates how technological innovation can better prepare us for future maritime challenges and deepen our understanding of the mysteries beneath the ocean’s surface.
