He is hailed as the original middle class hero who dared to dream. And here is this original India bull who worked tirelessly to make one such dream come true. As irony would have it, both died within a day of each-other, one in New Delhi and the other in Tokyo. Dr Manmohan Singh, 92, silent architect of India’s economic reforms died on December 26, while Osamu Suzuki, 94, died on Christmas Day. His death, however, was announced on December 27. Both invested tremendous faith in the India story working relentlessly over the decades to drive the Indian economy to its current leadership. Call it serendipity, just a few days ago, I happened to discover a prized possession, a letter written to me by Suzuki, about 27 years ago. All these years I thought I had misplaced it but found it while shifting home as I rummaged through some old clippings and files. It came to life as Osamu walked into history. The November, 14, 1997, letter penned by Suzuki (then the President & CEO, Suzuki Motor Corporation), was delivered at my New Delhi Zee News office, where I served then as the Business Editor. All my professional life I have never ever received any similar personal communication from any Indian or global business owner. A matter of introspection for business leaders in how they engage with the newsroom. Romance Gone Sour The opening para of the letter gave it all away: “I am writing to you as I believe that given the full and correct facts about Suzuki and Maruti, you would form views and take decisions which are in the best interests of the Indian automobile industry and India.” Humbled by the confidence, I sensed his deep hurt and displeasure with the then Union government. India was then ruled by I K Gujral, who became Prime Minister as a consensus candidate of a coalition government supported by Congress from the outside. Gujral’s industry minister happened to be Murasoli Maran, an important DMK leader, a party which was headed by his maternal uncle and mentor, M Karunanidhi. Maran was a Union Minister in three separate central governments, in charge of Urban Development in the V.P. Singh government, Industry in the Gowda and Gujral governments, and finally Commerce and Industry under AB Vajpayee. Suzuki’s anguish was palpable: “In 1982, Suzuki agreed to invest in India in a JV where the Government was a majority partner. At that time most car manufacturers were not willing to invest in markets traditionally given very low priority..... It was difficult for us to understand why despite the several achievements of Maruti, this trust has been lost in the last two to three years and we are being treated as adversaries of the government,” Suzuki said in his November 1997 letter. Establishing the chronology, Suzuki lamented, “The safeguards and rights given to us when we decided to invest in Maruti in 1982 , and which were observed until 1994, were totally disregarded. Our protests were considered unpatriotic.” The Maruti Story The man who built Suzuki as a global behemoth concluded the letter with the confidence that “Maruti has a future that will span any individual or event. It is a fusion of two cultures that has enabled it to establish a benchmark of excellence.” Prophetic words, indeed, uttered 27 years ago by a business visionary who simply loved India. Osamu Suzuki passed away at a time when Maruti is among world’s top passenger vehicle companies driving the parent’s profitability. In May 2007, when Dr Manmohan Singh, was the Prime Minister, the Union government fully exited from Maruti selling its 10.3% putting an end to the bitter past. One man who made it possible besides Osamu is former bureaucrat turned evergreen Maruti leader, R C Bhargava, who enjoyed complete trust and confidence of the Japanese auto owner. The famed Suzuki and Bhargava, current non-executive chairman, friendship, is a case study. Asked to describe the relationship, Bhargava once told me that it was born out of trust, transparency and target. Suzuki stood by Bhargava even in the most trying circumstances. Bhargava (former civil servant), 90, symbol of continuity at Maruti, said that without his vision (Suzuki’s) the Indian automobile industry could not have become the powerhouse that it has become. Indeed, the largest market for Japan’s fifth biggest carmaker – India accounted for over 61% of total output in the previous financial year (FY-24) and 57% of its total global sales. Maruti Suzuki continues to dominate the proceedings riding the boom at a time when India witnessed exits of some of the top global auto brands. It endures a 40 per cent plus market share. What began in 1982 has been a journey of the making of a truly Indian brand respected in the global arena. For Osamu Suzuki, the spectacular growth despite turbulence in between is a vindication of the immense trust and faith in India. : Syria’s prime minister said Monday that most cabinet ministers were back at work after rebels overthrew President Bashar Assad, but some state workers failed to return to their jobs, and a United Nations official said the country’s public sector had come “to a complete and abrupt halt.” Meanwhile, streams of refugees crossed back into Syria from neighboring countries, hoping for a more peaceful future and looking for relatives who disappeared during Assad’s brutal rule. There were already signs of the difficulties ahead for the rebel alliance now in control of much of the country. The alliance is led by a former senior al-Qaida militant who severed ties with the extremist group years ago and has promised representative government and religious tolerance. The rebel command said Monday they would not tell women how to dress. “It is strictly forbidden to interfere with women’s dress or impose any request related to their clothing or appearance, including requests for modesty,” the command said in a statement on social media. Nearly two days after rebels entered the capital, some key government services had shut down after state workers ignored calls to go back to their jobs, the U.N. official said, causing issues at airports and borders and slowing the flow of humanitarian aid. Rebel leader Ahmad al-Sharaa, who was long known by his nom de guerre Abu Mohammed al-Golani, also met for the first time with Prime Minister Mohammad Ghazi Jalali, who stayed in Syria when Assad fled. “You will see there are skills” among the rebels, al-Sharaa said in a video shared on a rebel messaging channel. Israel said it carried out airstrikes on suspected chemical weapons sites and long-range rockets to keep them from falling into the hands of extremists. Israel also seized a buffer zone inside Syria after Syrian troops withdrew. In northern Syria, Turkey said allied opposition forces seized the town of Manbij from Kurdish-led forces backed by the United States, a reminder that even after Assad’s departure, the country remains split among armed groups that have fought in the past. Ruling on Monday after an emergency hearing at Belfast High Court, judge Mr Justice McAlinden rejected loyalist activist Jamie Bryson’s application for leave for a full judicial review hearing against Northern Ireland Secretary Hilary Benn. The judge said Mr Bryson, who represented himself as a personal litigant, had “very ably argued” his case with “perseverance and cogency”, and had raised some issues of law that caused him “some concern”. However, he found against him on the three grounds of challenge against Mr Benn. Mr Bryson had initially asked the court to grant interim relief in his challenge to prevent Tuesday’s democratic consent motion being heard in the Assembly, pending the hearing of a full judicial review. However, he abandoned that element of his leave application during proceedings on Monday, after the judge made clear he would be “very reluctant” to do anything that would be “trespassing into the realms” of a democratically elected Assembly. Mr Bryson had challenged Mr Benn’s move to initiate the democratic consent process that is required under the UK and EU’s Windsor Framework deal to extend the trading arrangements that apply to Northern Ireland. The previously stated voting intentions of the main parties suggest that Stormont MLAs will vote to continue the measures for another four years when they convene to debate the motion on Tuesday. After the ruling, Mr Bryson told the court he intended to appeal to the Court of Appeal. Any hearing was not expected to come later on Monday. In applying for leave, the activist’s argument was founded on three key grounds. The first was the assertion that Mr Benn failed to make sufficient efforts to ensure Stormont’s leaders undertook a public consultation exercise in Northern Ireland before the consent vote. The second was that the Secretary of State allegedly failed to demonstrate he had paid special regard to protecting Northern Ireland’s place in the UK customs territory in triggering the vote. The third ground centred on law changes introduced by the previous UK government earlier this year, as part of its Safeguarding the Union deal to restore powersharing at Stormont. He claimed that if the amendments achieved their purpose, namely, to safeguard Northern Ireland’s place within the United Kingdom, then it would be unlawful to renew and extend post-Brexit trading arrangements that have created economic barriers between the region and the rest of the UK. In 2023, the UK Supreme Court unanimously ruled that the trading arrangements for Northern Ireland are lawful. The appellants in the case argued that legislation passed at Westminster to give effect to the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement conflicted with the 1800 Acts of Union that formed the United Kingdom, particularly article six of that statute guaranteeing unfettered trade within the UK. The Supreme Court found that while article six of the Acts of Union has been “modified” by the arrangements, that was done with the express will of a sovereign parliament, and so therefore was lawful. Mr Bryson contended that amendments made to the Withdrawal Agreement earlier this year, as part of the Safeguarding the Union measures proposed by the Government to convince the DUP to return to powersharing, purport to reassert and reinforce Northern Ireland’s constitutional status in light of the Supreme Court judgment. He told the court that it was “quite clear” there was “inconsistency” between the different legal provisions. “That inconsistency has to be resolved – there is an arguable case,” he told the judge. However, Dr Tony McGleenan KC, representing the Government, described Mr Bryson’s argument as “hopeless” and “not even arguable”. He said all three limbs of the case had “no prospect of success and serve no utility”. He added: “This is a political argument masquerading as a point of constitutional law and the court should see that for what it is.” After rising to consider the arguments, Justice McAlinden delivered his ruling shortly after 7pm. The judge dismissed the application on the first ground around the lack consultation, noting that such an exercise was not a “mandatory” obligation on Mr Benn. On the second ground, he said there were “very clear” indications that the Secretary of State had paid special regard to the customs territory issues. On the final ground, Justice McAlinden found there was no inconsistency with the recent legislative amendments and the position stated in the Supreme Court judgment. “I don’t think any such inconsistency exists,” he said. He said the amendments were simply a “restatement” of the position as set out by the Supreme Court judgment, and only served to confirm that replacing the Northern Ireland Protocol with the Windsor Framework had not changed the constitutional fact that Article Six of the Acts of Union had been lawfully “modified” by post-Brexit trading arrangements. “It does no more than that,” he said. The framework, and its predecessor the NI Protocol, require checks and customs paperwork on goods moving from Great Britain into Northern Ireland. Under the arrangements, which were designed to ensure no hardening of the Irish land border post-Brexit, Northern Ireland continues to follow many EU trade and customs rules. This has proved highly controversial, with unionists arguing the system threatens Northern Ireland’s place in the United Kingdom. Advocates of the arrangements say they help insulate the region from negative economic consequences of Brexit. A dispute over the so-called Irish Sea border led to the collapse of the Northern Ireland Assembly in 2022, when the DUP withdrew then-first minister Paul Givan from the coalition executive. The impasse lasted two years and ended in January when the Government published its Safeguarding the Union measures. Under the terms of the framework, a Stormont vote must be held on articles five to 10 of the Windsor Framework, which underpin the EU trade laws in force in Northern Ireland, before they expire. The vote must take place before December 17. Based on the numbers in the Assembly, MLAs are expected to back the continuation of the measures for another four years, even though unionists are likely to oppose the move. DUP leader Gavin Robinson has already made clear his party will be voting against continuing the operation of the Windsor Framework. Unlike other votes on contentious issues at Stormont, the motion does not require cross-community support to pass. If it is voted through with a simple majority, the arrangements are extended for four years. In that event, the Government is obliged to hold an independent review of how the framework is working. If it wins cross-community support, which is a majority of unionists and a majority of nationalists, then it is extended for eight years. The Bills put the game away by capitalizing on two Jets turnovers and scoring three touchdowns over a 5:01 span in the closing minutes of the third quarter. Buffalo’s defense forced three takeaways overall and sacked Aaron Rodgers four times, including a 2-yard loss for a safety in the second quarter. Allen had a short and efficient outing, finishing 16 of 27 for 182 yards with a 30-yard TD pass to Amari Cooper and a 14-yarder to Keon Coleman before giving way to backup Mitchell Trubisky with Buffalo leading 33-0 through three quarters. PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Saquon Barkley normally would have tossed his game-used cleats to the kid who asked for the pair as the star Philadelphia Eagles running back ran off the field and back to the locker room. Sorry, kid. Not today. Barkley kept his mucked-up cleats for good reason — he became the ninth running back in NFL history to top 2,000 yards rushing in a season, reaching the milestone with a 23-yard run in the fourth quarter of Sunday's 41-7 win over the Dallas Cowboys. That rush gave Barkley 2,005 yards with one game left and stuck him exactly 100 yards from Eric Dickerson's record of 2,105, set in 1984 for the Los Angeles Rams. Barkley left the game after the run that got him past 2,000, finishing with 167 yards on 31 carries. “We definitely knew what the number was to at least get 2,000,” Barkley said. “We weren't leaving this field without at least accomplishing that. That's not the words from me, that's the words from the guys up front.” Whether Dickerson likes it or not — and the Hall of Famer made clear last week he does not — Barkley is coming for the record next Sunday against the New York Giants. Well, maybe. The Eagles have clinched the NFC East and least the No. 2 seed in the conference, making that game mostly meaningless. Coach Nick Sirianni could opt to rest Barkley to protect him from injury ahead of the playoffs. “Whatever his decision is, I'm all for it,” Barkley said. “If his mindset is, go out and try it, we'll go out and try it. If his mindset is, let's rest and get ready for this run, I'll all for it, too.” Sirianni simply said, “we'll see.” His backward hat askew, Barkley laughed when asked if he wanted to break the record in a delicious twist against his old team. “I'm not overly trying to go get it,” Barkley said. “I'm not scared to. I would love to. But at the end of the day, we've got bigger things we're focusing on.” Barkley gets a shot at the record thanks to a 17th game of the season that Dickerson and the NFL did not have in 1984. Derrick Henry was the last running back to exceed 2,000 yards. He had 2,027 for the Tennessee Titans in 2020. Minnesota running back Adrian Peterson ran for 2,097 yards in 2012, the second most in an NFL season. Barkley, who left the Giants to sign a three-year deal with the Eagles for $26 million guaranteed, also set the NFL mark Sunday for most yards rushing in a player's first season with a new team. He ran for 176 yards and a touchdown in his first career game against the Giants. “I didn't come here or sign here just to rush for 2,000 (yards) and break a record,” Barkley said. “I'm here to do something special.” Barkley was drafted out of Penn State with the No. 2 overall pick in 2018. He was an instant success with New York and ran for 1,307 yards his rookie season. Barkley ran for 5,211 yards and 35 touchdowns and had 288 receptions for 2,100 yards and 12 TDs in six years with the Giants. He hit free agency after the Giants elected not to put a franchise tag on him. “I was in the dark,” Barkley said. “You don't know what's going to happen, you don't know where you're going to be. Everything is kind of up in the air.” His mission is clear — win a Super Bowl and maybe take down Dickerson. Sporting his trademark goggles and Jheri curl, Dickerson had seven straight 1,000-yard seasons in the 1980s, and the Hall of Famer is widely considered one of the best running backs ever. Dickerson finished with 13,259 yards, the ninth most in NFL history. Emmitt Smith holds the career record with 18,355 yards. “I don’t think he’ll break it. But if he breaks it, he breaks it,” Dickerson told the Los Angeles Times . “Do I want him to break it? Absolutely not. I don’t pull no punches on that. But I’m not whining about it. He had 17 games to do it? Hey, football is football.” In 1984, Dickerson topped 100 yards rushing 12 times to break O.J. Simpson’s 1973 record of 2,003 yards rushing in a season. Simpson set his record in 14 games for the Buffalo Bills before the NFL expanded to 16 in 1978. The NFL moved to 17 games in 2021. “The way football is right now, it’s kind of hard to rush for 2,000 yards in 14 games,” Barkley said. "So, whether it’s 16, whether it’s 17, it’s a feat that you can never take away from what I was able to do with the O-line.
