On Wednesday, Pete Hegseth's mother accused the Times of making “threats” by calling about its story on an email she had sent to her son six years earlier that criticized his treatment of women. Penelope Hegseth sought and received an interview on Fox News Channel to support her son, whose confirmation chances are threatened by a series of damaging stories about his personal conduct. At one point, she said she wanted to directly tell President-elect Trump that her son “is not that man he was seven years ago.” She also called the Times “despicable” and attacked a basic tenet of journalism: giving someone the chance to speak for a story about actions that could be seen in a negative light. The Times' story, published Saturday , quoted from a private email that Penelope Hegseth sent to her son in 2018 while he was in the midst of divorcing his second wife. She criticized his character and treatment of women, suggesting that he get some help. “I have no respect for any man that belittles, lies, cheats, sleeps around and uses women for his own power and ego,” she wrote to her offspring. “You are that man (and have been for many years).” She told the Times for its story that she had sent the email in a moment of anger and followed it up two hours later with an apology. She disavows its content now. When the Times called her for comment on the story, Hegseth told Fox News that, at first, she did not respond. NoneWASHINGTON — Deaths from starvation will likely pass famine levels in northern Gaza as soon as next month owing to Israel’s “near-total blockade” of food and other aid, the U.S.-created global food-crisis monitor said on Tuesday. The finding by the Famine Early Warning System Network appeared to expose a rift within the Biden administration over the extent of starvation in northern Gaza, with the U.S. ambassador to Israel, Jacob Lew, disputing part of the data used in reaching the conclusion and calling the stepped-up famine warning “irresponsible.” Northern Gaza has been one of the areas hardest-hit by fighting and Israel’s restrictions on aid throughout its 14-month war with Hamas militants. Israel at one point increased the number of aid deliveries it permitted into northern Gaza under pressure from President Joe Biden. But the U.N. and aid groups say Israel recently has blocked almost all aid again. Only nine U.N. trucks have been able to bring in food and water over the past 2 1/2 months, Oxfam says. It says the vast majority of the area’s residents have fled and relocated to Gaza City, where most aid destined for the north is delivered. The administration recently said Israel was making improvements and declined to carry out its threat of restrictions. Harmony Montgomery was beaten to death by her father, Adam Montgomery , who hit her body in a duffel bag. Montgomery was jailed for 56 years to life in prison on May 9, 2024, for the killing of his daughter in Manchester, New Hampshire, in 2019. Now Harmony's mother, Crystal Sorey, has detailed new allegations against the Granite State. She accuses the Division of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF) of failing to respond to reports of abuse made months before the murder. MORE ON HARMONY MONTGOMERY The lawsuit was originally filed in September, but this month, her attorney filed a revised version including additional information about the alleged failure of duty by New Hampshire authorities. In the lawsuit, 17 different reports made to the DCYF before Harmony was reported missing by police on New Year's Eve 2021 were featured. One report states Harmony was being molested by people staying at the Montgomery family's home, where drugs were also being used. Child protection social worker, Demetrios Tsaros, is accused in the lawsuit of failing to respond appropriately to another report about Harmony's black eye. Most read in The US Sun Tsaros did not respond immediately to The U.S. Sun's requests for comment. The U.S. Sun has also contacted the New Hampshire Attorney General's Office, representing the state. This isn't the first time Harmony's mother has said her daughter was "failed" by authorities. Harmony was born in June 2014, while her father was in prison, and was placed in foster care at two months old. In 2019, Adam Montgomery was awarded full custody of his daughter by a judge. At the time, he was living with his wife Kayla and their two sons. Harmony was beaten and abused by her father, with other relatives picking up on what was going on. Her uncle, Kevin Montgomery, noticed the child had a black eye while on a visit from Florida. Montgomery reportedly said that he had "bashed her" around, and Kevin contacted child protective agencies. Chilling court documents show Montgomery's cold, defiant answers to questioning from detectives about the "injuries" she allegedly sustained while in his care. In late 2019, Montgomery was evicted from the home and the family began living in a homeless shelter. Harmony - who was struggling with toilet training - continued to suffer beatings at the hands of her father . She was last seen by her mother looking "frightened" during a FaceTime call , she later said. Her body was never discovered, but Montgomery later confessed to abusing her corpse. In June 2022, cops tore up the floorboards and ripped apart closets as they searched the apartment where Harmony was living before her disappearance. Montgomery was arrested for murder in October, 2022. A year later, Montgomery was found guilty of firearms charges in a case unrelated to Harmony's disappearance and murder. Montgomery denied killing his daughter in court in a last-ditch emotional plea to the judge during his August 2023 trial, talking about his addiction and saying he "could've had a meaningful life." He showed no remorse, appearing in court grinning with his tongue stuck out at the start of jury selection. In court, his "child killer" neck tattoo was spotted under his orange prison uniform. Earlier this year, it was uncovered that he told a friend he "hated" his daughter "right to his core" shortly before he murdered her. The trial also heard Harmony died in the back of Montgomery's car while he ate Burger King and did drugs . To this date, he has never revealed where he disposed of her body, but in February this year, he was heard on a phone call from jail saying the FBI was "wasting time" searching for Harmony. In March 2024, a New Hampshire judge granted Sorey's request to have her daughter declared legally dead due to Montgomery's confession. Harmony's stepmom, Kayla Montgomery, walked free from jail in May 2024, despite admitting to "hiding" Harmony's body. In February this year, she said she and Montgomery traveled with Harmony's body for months in a bag . Speaking in Canberra yesterday, Williams was asked about Joe Rogan’s influence on the US election, and if the ABC should be trying to capture the “bro market”. What size turkey do I need to buy? Choose the weight of your Thanksgiving turkey based on the number of guests you plan to invite. The safest method for choosing the size of the bird is to purchase 1.5 pounds of whole bird per guest. On average, each person consumes 8 ounces of turkey. If you don’t need a whole bird for your Thanksgiving crowd, you can choose a smaller product option such as a turkey breast. What do labels tell us and what do the words mean? Labels simply allow consumers to have an option when putting food on the table. There is no right or wrong label to source as the cost and visual appearance of packaging can also impact consumer preferences. Free-range is a common label seen on poultry products. Free range means farmers give turkeys access to the outdoors as they grow. Buy early for the best selection. A frozen bird can keep for over a year so there really is no such thing as “too early” to buy. Consumers can freeze fresh turkeys for storage also if they wish. Plan for defrosting time when making your purchase. The recommended method for defrosting for food safety is from the freezer to the fridge. Allow 24 hours for each 4-5 pounds of bird weight in a refrigerator 40 degrees or lower. Once refrigerator-thawed, a turkey can be left in the refrigerator for one to two days before cooking. Is there a nutritional difference between fresh and frozen? There is no nutritional difference between fresh and frozen turkeys at the grocery store. Most whole turkeys at the grocery store are frozen. This is the easiest way to ship and store them for sale. Farm-to-table style means smaller producers can provide fresh options. However, they cost more and these products are not available until just before the holiday season. However, consumers can freeze them for storage if they wish. Is my turkey Texas-grown? Odds are good that the turkey you find in Texas supermarkets has come from out of state. Minnesota, North Carolina and Arkansas are the top states for turkey production. Texas does not have large-scale commercial turkey farms. The 4-H and FFA youth of Texas produce the most turkeys in the state for major stock shows and judging contests. But you can reach out to local markets, butchers or specialty shops to determine if they have locally grown turkeys.
