WASHINGTON — As president-elect Donald Trump rattles his closest neighbours with threats of tariffs, he is also firming up the team of loyalists to put his plans into action. Trump's team to lead his trade agenda and the American economy include trade lawyers, former advisers and Wall Street executives who have all expressed favourable views of tariffs. "He's choosing a lot of people who are going to be loyal to him and his ideas," said Matthew Lebo, a specialist in U.S. politics at Western University in London, Ont. "And that probably will lead to a lot more volatility than even we saw in the first term." On Tuesday evening, Trump picked Jamieson Greer to be U.S. trade representative. The president-elect said Greer played a key role in the first Trump administration imposing tariffs on China and negotiating the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement. If confirmed, Greer will oversee the trade pact’s review in 2026. "Jamieson will focus the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative on reining in the country's massive trade deficit, defending American manufacturing, agriculture, and services, and opening up export markets everywhere," Trump said in a statement. Greer was the chief of staff to former U.S. trade representative Robert Lighthizer as the trilateral agreement was being crafted to replace the North American Free Trade Agreement, which was torn up last time Trump entered office. Greer's nomination came the day after Trump said he will impose a 25 per cent import tariff on goods coming from Canada and Mexico. He has also announced an additional 10 per cent tariff on goods from China. Trump said the tariffs against Canada and Mexico would remain in place until both countries stop people and drugs, in particular fentanyl, from illegally crossing the border into the U.S. A Canadian Chamber of Commerce report suggested Trump’s previous pledge to impose a 10 per cent levy would take a $30-billion bite out of the Canadian economy. More than 77 per cent of Canadian exports go to the U.S. and trade comprises 60 per cent of Canada's gross domestic product. Some economists have warned across-the-board duties would cause inflation in the U.S., even though Trump campaigned on lowering costs for Americans. Greer was deeply involved in Trump's original sweeping tariffs on China and subsequent negotiations on the U.S.-China Phase 1 trade agreement, online biographies say. In testimony about China's trade agenda at a House trade subcommittee last year, Greer said he believes "good fences make good neighbours, and trade enforcement is an important part of establishing those fences." On Tuesday, Trump also tapped Kevin Hassett to be the director of the White House National Economic Council. The role will be key in fulfilling Trump's campaign promise to fix the U.S. economy. His announcement said Hassett will also "ensure that we have fair trade with countries that have taken advantage of the United States in the past." Hassett served during the first Trump term as chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers and the president-elect has called him a "true friend." The latest nominations round out an economic team that includes hedge fund executive Scott Bessent for Treasury secretary and Howard Lutnick, the CEO of Wall Street investment bank Cantor Fitzgerald, who was tapped for commerce secretary. If confirmed by the Senate, Lutnick would oversee a sprawling cabinet agency and Trump's tariff agenda. He has been a vocal supporter of Trump's tariff plans. In an CNBC interview in September he said tariffs are "an amazing tool for the president to use — we need to protect the American worker." Lebo said as Trump prepares to return to office he is removing any person who could prove to be a guardrail or check on his power. "These are people aligned with Trump," Lebo said. "More and more aligned with his campaign rhetoric." But if picture quality is your No. 1 priority and you have the budget, there's no TV on the planet with a better picture than the LG G4. And the opportunity to get it for 32% off during Black Friday is super timely, since most people ramp up their content consumption over the winter months. First of all, there are the things that make all OLED screens great -- and it's especially true for LG OLEDs because they are one of the leading innovators of the technology. We're talking about true blacks (as opposed to washed-out dark grays from LCD TVs), deep contrast, more vibrant colors, and amazing dynamic range in shots that have both dark and light elements. The LG G4 has all of those qualities -- and at the highest levels I've seen on any TV -- because it is LG's flagship OLED TV for 2024. So what's new in this year's LG G4? The biggest leap forward is in picture processing and that's made possible by the new α11 AI Processor 4K. I've always considered Sony the king of picture processing, and it was a long way back to LG and Samsung essentially tied for second place, with budget TV makers TCL and Hisense lagging the crowd. However, with the 2024 α11 AI Processor, LG is now pushing Sony for the top spot in picture processing -- and that's saying a lot. As I've already mentioned, you could buy two 65-inch Sony X90L TVs for the price of one 65-inch LG G4. And I think most people would be extremely happy with the mid-range Sony X90L. But you're not most people if you're considering the LG G4. The other drawbacks are the remote and LG's built-in webOS software. Both are mediocre at best. I consider LG's remote to be the worst of any of the big five TV makers. It's large, chonky, and has a confusing number of buttons. A TV this good and with such a premium design that is svelte and beautiful deserves a better-designed remote. LG's built-in webOS software is nearly as disappointing as the remote control. It works fine, but it's not very intuitive and it is nowhere close to being as well-thought-out as the TV hardware. The icons for content are small and sometimes hard to select, the menu system is a bit convoluted, and there are built-in ads running in the software -- which feels unconsciousonable for a TV this expensive. That said, in testing the 83-inch LG G4 in ZDNET's TV lab, I simply never used the remote or the built-in software. I attached an Apple TV 4K and used that remote and its interface to access all of the streaming services and content that I wanted. The combination of the LG G4 and Apple TV was glorious. So, if you buy an LG G4, I'd recommend adding a high-end streaming box like the Apple TV 4K, Google TV Streamer (4K), Amazon Fire TV Cube, or Nvidia Shield. The built-in sound in the LG G4 is fine but not great -- like virtually every other high-end or budget TV. So if you're buying a TV this expensive, I'm going to assume you're going to add a soundbar . At the very least, I'd recommend getting the Hisense AX5125H 5.1.2-channel soundbar -- my pick for best budget soundbar at $250 for Black Friday. And if you really want to kick into high gear, then I'd recommend the Sony Bravia Theater Quad , which automatically calibrates itself to your room. Or, even better, the Lovesac Sactional + Stealthech gives you surround sound built into your couch and makes you truly feel the cinematic experience much more like a real theater. Lastly, if you'd prefer a high-quality OLED TV with a great remote and great software built-in so that you don't have to run a separate streaming box, then I'd recommend the Sony A95L OLED TV , which runs Google TV and has a very premium remote. And if your TV is going to be in a very bright room with lots of windows or lights, then I'd recommend the Samsung S95D , which nearly matches the LG G4 in picture quality but comes with an incredible glare-free screen that looks amazing in any room. CARSON — It was the perfect start to the perfect end of the 2024 season for the Galaxy. Within the first 15 minutes, just barely enough time after the pregame festivities, the Galaxy seized control, first with Joseph Paintsil’s opening goal, followed by Dejan Joveljic for a quick two-goal lead. From there, the Galaxy, who had been known to run up the scoreboard, dug in and eventually saw a 2-1 win, claiming the club’s sixth MLS Cup title, Saturday at Dignity Health Sports Park in front of 26,812. This was the Galaxy’s first MLS Cup appearance since 2014. After going unbeaten at home in the regular season, the Galaxy is now unbeaten (4-0) at home in MLS Cups. Last year at this time, the Galaxy was well into their offseason rebuilding project. The 2023 regular season was dismal, finishing in 13th place in the Western Conference, but before contending for the MLS Cup, the Galaxy had to win its offseason. And that’s what they did, with the acquisitions of goalkeeper John McCarthy and defender John Nelson and the signings of Designated Players Paintsil and Gabriel Pec. The moves, coupled with the re-emergence of Joveljic and fiery Riqui Puig paid dividends during the season. One question for Saturday was how the Galaxy would replace Puig, who suffered an ACL injury in last week’s conference final win against Seattle. In stepped Gaston Brugman, who hadn’t appeared in the starting lineup since Oct. 5 and had just three starting assignments since September. Brugman assisted on Paintsil’s opening goal, slotting a ball from midfield through the defense right to Paintsil in the ninth minute. Joveljic made it 2-0 in the 13th minute. The Red Bulls received a lifeline in the 28th minute on Sean Nealis’ goal after the Galaxy failed to clear a corner kick. The Red Bulls had a stretch of four consecutive corner kicks later in the half to test the Galaxy’s structure, but weren’t able to break through. The Red Bulls, seeking their first MLS title, received a bit of bad news before the game as center back Andres Reyes was removed from the starting lineup due to an illness. This was the first MLS Cup appearance for the Red Bulls since 2008.
