The budget to the fund in 2024 was about N10 million, but this time, the House in a resolution Wednesday said it should be increased to N100 million for the 2025 fiscal year to enable it effectively carry out its statutory mandates. The House has also asked the Federal Ministry of Health to provide an update on the status of the Tobacco Control Fund, detailing the current balance, sources of money in the fund and details of previous spending. This followed a motion by Hon. Bassey Akiba who said Section 8 of the National Tobacco Control Act 2015 provided that there shall be funding for the National Tobacco Control Committee to enforce compliance with the provisions of the act. He said the federal government recently doubled its financial commitment to the Tobacco Control Fund from N4.7 million to N10 million in the 2024 budget but the amount was insufficient to meet the needs of the under-resourced Tobacco Control Fund, domiciled under the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare. “Cigarette smoke contains 7,000 chemicals, and about 70 of them cause cancer. In addition, exposure to secondhand smoke increases heart attack risk in non-smokers by 60% and lung cancer risk by 30%, there is no safe level of exposure to tobacco smoke. “With the fund, the National Tobacco and other ministries and agencies responsible for the enforcement of the act would be equipped to enforce the prohibition of smoking in public places to advertising, promotion, and sponsorship of tobacco products, graphic and pictorial health warning signs, and access to tobacco products for persons below the age of 18,” he said.

The head coach was asked if he made a mistake keeping injured quarterback Zach Collaros in the game, why star running back Brady Oliveira didn’t get the ball more and whether a flawed game plan led to Winnipeg’s third consecutive championship loss. “As an entire team, we didn’t have our best game,” O’Shea said in his end-of-the-season press conference. “We didn’t lack effort. We didn’t lack desire. “We didn’t have our best game as an entire team. Three phases. Coaches — everybody. Me especially.” O’Shea admitted he missed calling a timeout in the fourth quarter when there were only 11 Blue Bombers on the field instead of 12. “I don’t get the count over the headset as quickly as I probably need to, we can’t count. As I’m seeing a guy come off, that’s the right time for that timeout that I should have used,” O’Shea said. He also said he should have used a challenge flag earlier on a play he didn’t identify, and checked on his players more during the game. But hindsight wouldn’t change his decision to put Collaros back in the game after the index finger on his throwing hand was cut deep when it hit a defender’s helmet. “He absolutely deserves every opportunity to lead this team,” O’Shea said. “From what I saw and from chatting with him very briefly, I felt really comfortable with that. I didn’t think it was going to be easy, but I thought it’s Zach, so...” The injury to Collaros’s finger happened late in the third quarter when the Blue Bombers were trailing the Argonauts 17-10. The veteran left the game and returned with a bandaged finger that needed five stitches and a numbing agent. He wore a glove on the hand and told reporters earlier this week it was difficult to grip the ball. Collaros said he warned receivers in the huddle his throws might not have the usual zip and they should be prepared to come back for the ball. “(I) saw him delivering the ball on the sidelines. Then you see him deliver a couple balls out there and some of them are pretty damn good, right?” O’Shea said. “The awareness of Zach to say to the receivers, ‘hey, work a little harder for me,’ I think it’s natural and what should be said. I think they already know that.” When Collaros re-entered the game, he threw interceptions in back-to-back series. “On one of them he got rid of the ball and I thought it was a good ball and the defensive player made a good play,” O’Shea said of the picks. “One slipped right out of his hand or I don’t know if it got tipped or not. You’ve got to give him that opportunity.” Oliveira was questioning his lack of opportunities in the game when he spoke to reporters earlier in the week. The CFL’s newly-minted most outstanding player and top Canadian only had 11 carries for 84 yards and one late touchdown. About 17 or 18 run plays were called, O’Shea said. “One starts off with a procedure penalty in the first and then six of those get pulled because there’s X number of guys in the box or the read says this is not a run play anymore, this is now a pass play,” he said. “You call that many runs and then a pile of them get pulled because of the structure of the defence. That’s OK with me at that point.” O’Shea said Bombers offensive co-ordinator Buck Pierce has been granted permission to talk to CFL teams with head-coaching job openings. The B.C. Lions are reportedly interested in Pierce. The Edmonton Elks also have a vacant head coach spot. If Pierce doesn’t become a head coach, O’Shea said he wants him to stay in Winnipeg. He believes Pierce had the offence “extremely well-prepared” for the Grey Cup. “I’m never going to question the play-calling, and I think what’s going on here is we’re questioning,” O’Shea said. “We’re trying to find blame and fault when that’s nowhere in our DNA of how we built this eight, nine, 10 years ago. We’re starting to try and find all these answers and question all these people that were 0-4 and 2-6 and then 10-1, and we just didn’t play our best game.” The Bombers finished 11-7 and claimed the West Division title that earned them a fifth consecutive trip to the Grey Cup. They won the championship in 2019 and ’21, but lost 28-24 to the Montreal Alouettes last year and 24-23 to Toronto in 2023. “We’re the same group that got there, that went on a phenomenal run after a bad start, and a bad start for a lot of reasons that we overcame,” O’Shea said. “I just, I don’t question any of it. I look for answers, too. I watch the film over and over and over again. And look to already make notes on how we’re going to be better, how we’re going to get back there again.”

Washington — President-elect Donald Trump's choice to lead the Pentagon, Pete Hegseth , is showing defiance amid misconduct allegations as support for his confirmation appeared to be in doubt. There are now several candidates under consideration to replace him as Trump's intended nominee, sources familiar with the transition tell CBS News, among them, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and Iowa Sen. Joni Ernst. But the embattled former Fox News host on Wednesday pushed back on reports that Trump is considering other candidates for defense secretary . On Capitol Hill on Wednesday morning, as he continued to visit Republican members of Congress, Hegseth told CBS News that he does not intend to withdraw his name from consideration. He also said he spoke with Trump Wednesday morning, and the president-elect encouraged him to keep fighting. "I spoke to the president-elect this morning. He said, 'Keep going, keep fighting. I'm behind you all the way,'" Hegseth said. "Why would I back down? I've always been a fighter. I'm here for the fighters. This is personal and passionate for me." In an interview with SiriusXM's "The Megyn Kelly Show" Wednesday, Hegseth said he had spoken with Trump earlier in the day and that the incoming president had told him, "I've got your back." On reports of the possibility that DeSantis could replace him as defense chief nominee, he told Kelly, "It's all the president's choice. I spoke to the president this morning. He said, I'm his guy." Despite the acrimony between DeSantis and Trump during the primary campaign, the Florida governor is interested in the job, according to two sources familiar with DeSantis' thinking. His second and final term as governor ends in January 2027. Trump has already announced a series of Cabinet nominees who hail from Florida, including Sen. Marco Rubio, for secretary of state. Although serving as defense secretary would pose some political risk, DeSantis believes it would position him well for a presidential run in 2028, the source said. Hegseth, a former "Fox & Friends" weekend co-host and Army veteran, has been meeting with Senate Republicans in recent weeks to build support for his confirmation. But reports in recent days that detailed alleged sexual misconduct, financial mismanagement at veterans' charities, repeated intoxication and infidelity appeared to be softening his support. Some Senate Republicans have called the allegations "disturbing" and said they came as a surprise. Still, Hegseth on Wednesday told reporters at the Capitol his meetings with Senate Republicans have been "a wonderful process." In his interview with Kelly, Hegseth said, "No one has looked me in the eye and said, 'I have concerns and I can't vote for you.' In fact, most have said, 'Let's take a picture, and I'm behind you all the way.'" Hegseth also defended himself in an opinion piece in the Wall Street Journal Wednesday. Amid reports about his removal as the head of a veterans' charity over allegations of financial mismanagement, intoxication, sexual misconduct and fostering a toxic work climate, Hegseth wrote of his work for that organization, Concerned Veterans for America. "We fought entrenched interests and mobilized veterans and patriotic Americans across the country," he said, denying reports of any misconduct and accusing the media of publishing falsehoods. "We had hundreds of employees and thousands of volunteers—yet based on the anonymous accusations of a few disgruntled employees, the legacy media has made it sound as if we ran a college frat house," he wrote. "That's just untrue." Hegseth also said that he left CVA over "an internal difference of opinion about its future. I wanted to engage in foreign policy; our donors didn't." And he added that the group's leadership "wrote me a glowing letter when I left." In his interview with Kelly, Hegseth addressed the sexual assault allegation that emerged in late November. He responded "absolutely not" when asked if he had raped a woman in a Monterey, California, hotel in 2017. He admitted that it would have once been a fair characterization to call him a "serial cheater" but says he has changed. "I may have been drinking, but I was cognizant enough to remember every single detail. And I'm not here to say that my conduct was good," he said. "Being in a hotel room with someone that's not the person you're with is not OK. I own up to that, and I've had to own up to that, and that's been difficult." He said he paid his accuser "because I had to — or at least I thought I did at the time." He explained that he was newly married, was under consideration for a role in the first Trump administration and wanted to protect his family and his Fox News job. He also responded to reporting by NBC News that cited current and former Fox News employees who said that "on more than a dozen occasions" while Hegseth was a "Fox & Friends Weekend" co-host, "they smelled alcohol on him before he went to air," and appeared on TV "after they'd heard him talk about being hungover as he was getting ready or on set." The report said "[t]hree current employees said his drinking remained a concern up until Trump announced him as his choice to run the Pentagon, at which point Hegseth left Fox." But in the op-ed, Hegseth did not directly address allegations about his alcohol consumption. "I've been at Fox News—where I saw my work as a continuation of my mission to fight for America. Again, the legacy press has used anonymous sources to try to discredit even that," and he referred readers to his X feed for statements of support from professional colleagues. He did tell Kelly, "I've never had a drinking problem." North Dakota GOP Sen. Kevin Cramer is scheduled to meet with Hegseth Wednesday afternoon and told reporters earlier in the day, "The allegations are very, very serious. They can't be trivialized. And I just want to know that, that he's redeemed, and going forward, he's going to be better." Cramer also added, "I think the mood of the conference is one of the pretty serious, really, really serious about it, and serious about how these things affect his ability to do the job, the ability of the troops to look up to him." He suggested the Republican conference was watching for signals from the Trump transition team about Hegseth. "There's the mood of the conference, and then there's the mood of the Trump transition team itself," he said. "So we'll see what kind of messages and signals we hear throughout the course of the day. As you can tell, these things have been breaking pretty fast and furious." Cramer said of Ernst that she would be "easy to confirm, and I think she'd be great," and in fact, "if she wanted it, she'd be my first pick." "I have never backed down from a fight and won't back down from this one," Hegseth wrote, adding, "I look forward to an honest confirmation hearing with our distinguished senators—not a show trial in the press." Hegseth has continued to meet with the Republican senators who will weigh in on his nomination. But one prominent Republican, Sen. Josh Hawley, told reporters Wednesday afternoon that Hegseth canceled their upcoming meeting. "I was supposed to sit down with him tomorrow, but they canceled that meeting," Hawley said. "I don't know where things stand at the moment," he said of Hegseth's expected nomination and added, "It's not 100% clear to me who [Trump] wants as secretary of defense right now." Hegseth told Kelly he planned to keep meeting with senators to earn their support, but he acknowledged that there's a possibility he may not be confirmed. Last month, Super Micro named BDO USA as its auditor and submitted a compliance plan to the stock exchange to file its annual and quarterly reports, after its listing came under threat when it failed to file its annual report in August. The company in August cited a need to assess "its internal controls over financial reporting" for the delay, a day after Hindenburg Research disclosed a short position. (AP) — A federal judge has ordered an Alabama city to allow an LGBTQ+ pride group to participate in the city’s Christmas parade on Friday, after the mayor initially blocked the group from the annual event citing unspecified “safety concerns.” U.S. District Judge R. Austin Huffaker Jr. ruled that the City of Prattville violated Prattville Pride’s First Amendment right to free speech and 14th Amendment right to equal protection under the law when it a float in the annual Christmas parade one day before the event was set to take place. “The City removed Prattville Pride from the parade based on its belief that certain members of the public who oppose Prattville Pride, and what is stands for, would react in a disruptive way. But discrimination based on a message’s content ‘cannot be tolerated under the First Amendment,’ ” Huffaker wrote in his opinion. The ruling required the city to provide at least two police officers to escort the float throughout the parade. On Thursday, Prattville Pride requested additional security measures from law enforcement. In response, Mayor Bill Gillespie Jr released a statement banning the group from the parade altogether, citing “serious safety concerns.” Huffaker’s ruling said that, leading up to the event, some community members “voiced vehement opposition” to the group’s inclusion in the parade, but that “the City has presented no evidence of legitimate, true threats of physical violence.” Gillespie’s office referred to a statement posted on the city’s social media in response to a request for comment. “The City respects the ruling of the Court and will comply with its order. The safety of everyone involved with the parade is a priority,” city officials said in a statement on social media.
