Seven years after the park opened on the former Michigan Central Rail Bridge, volunteers say it’s time for the next chapter and new leadership. Those behind the park have joined forces with the Railworks Coalition to help collaborate and grow. “We have a board structure and management and a bigger group of volunteers,” said Mat Janes, president of On Track St. Thomas, who manage the park. “Up to this point, it's been a small number of us that have been doing all the work. We hope to take advantage of Railworks standing in the community to bring some more people into the project as well.” The Railworks Coalition believes this is the natural next step, to unite all rail entities. “When this was all envisioned many years ago, it was to bring together all the rail, heritage and rail assets within St. Thomas and surrounding communities,” said Scott Sleightholm, president of Railworks Coalition. “Up until now, we have the Elgin County Railway Museum, CASO Station and BX Tower. When we were presented with the opportunity to bring in the Elevated Park, into the assets, I think it was a natural next step.” The park, which opened in 2017, recently received a boost from a local business. Entegrus has donated $10,000 to support enhancements. “What we're going to do is continue our tree planting program to the west of the bridge,” said Janes. “We call it the Arboretum Line because it's going to be all native trees identified. We're going to use it as an educational opportunity for people to learn about native trees. Then we'll also use it (the donation) for other improvements on the bridge, such as repairing the light sculpture.” It’s a partnership both parties believe will enable them to provide opportunities to attract new visitors, supporters, solidify the park’s impact on the region. “We've been expanding events at the CASO Station, the Elgin County Railway Museum, we can move to maybe bring back some more events and some different events over on the Elevated Park as well,” said Sleightholm. “We want to continue to push the rail heritage and the rail assets in St. Thomas-Elgin community.” Shopping Trends The Shopping Trends team is independent of the journalists at CTV News. Governance watchdog National Integrity Action (NIA) is calling for the Government to urgently move towards implementation of the Code of Conduct for Parliamentarians and enacting the Political Code of Conduct in law, with criminal sanctions for breaches. The NIA made the call in a media statement on Wednesday in which it condemned recent racially charged remarks by members of parliament Everald Warmington and Juliet Cuthbert Flynn. It said the MPs' comments "aim to divide Jamaica along racial lines and are disparaging and disrespectful to all Jamaicans." In endorsing similar condemnation by the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica, the NIA said such remarks diminish the contributions made by all groups to Jamaica. "Politicians who incite racism – or any other form of discrimination - should be unequivocally condemned. Their actions undermine social cohesion, fuel division and perpetuate harmful stereotypes. It's essential to emphasise that such behaviour is unacceptable and goes against the principles of equality and respect for all individuals. Parliamentarians are responsible for promoting unity and inclusivity, not division and hatred," the NIA stated. It called for the Government to promptly publish the Code of Conduct for Parliamentarians for public feedback and provide a timeline for its implementation. It also suggested an urgent review of the bill to embody the Political Code of Conduct in law be conducted as one approach to strengthening the code, with criminal sanctions for breaches. "As we enter the election season, the public must be protected from divisive and disparaging campaigns. These situations continue to test the wisdom of merging the Office of the Political Ombudsman with the Electoral Commission of Jamaica," the NIA asserted. Fuel marketers have explained why Nigerians have not started enjoying reduced petrol prices despite announcements and confirmations by both Dangote Refinery and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC). It would be recalled that in a bid to provide relief for Nigerians ahead of the holiday season, Dangote Petroleum Refinery announced a price reduction for its Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) product, to ₦899.50k per litre. The NNPC also confirmed a reduction in ex-depot prices to ₦899 per litre in Lagos. Based on these developments, the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) says fuel stations across the country would sell petrol to customers at the rate of ₦935 as from Monday, 23rd December. Observations across the country, however, show the new price regime has not taken effect in many filling stations. Speaking on the development during Monday’s edition of Channels Television’s breakfast show Sunrise Daily, the president of the Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria (PETROAN), Billy Gilly-Harry, said the delay in effecting the new price is because many stations are still selling the old stock bought at ₦970. He explained that it would not be healthy for the marketers to make a loss on the product but assured that before the week runs out, the reduced price regime would take effect as filling stations get fresh supplies. He assured that as soon as members of the organization start loading from both NNPC and Dangote at the new reduced price, it will reflect in the market. “So, this reduction, if you apply it immediately, don’t forget that some of them bought at ₦970, paid transportation costs and logistics that have taken it quite high,” Gilly-Harry said. “So, by the time it gets to their retail outlets, it’s quite much more than that. And so they must also sell at a profit – minimal marginal profit as provisioned by the PIA. So, That’s the reason,” the PETROAN boss said. Gilly-Harry also commended members of PETROAN in certain locations who have already reduced fuel prices in their stations below ₦1,000. “ But I believe from today when members start loading from both NNPC and Dangote at this new price reduction, it will reflect in the market. “But also I’ll give kudos to some of our members, some of the leaders in PETROAN, you know, that have done so well, especially in Abuja, for even reducing their prices to below ₦1,000 before even this announcement. “So, we don’t encourage our members to try to sell products at a loss because our focus is to serve Nigerians. And the only way we can serve Nigerians is when we have the resources to be able to do that. The resources can only be there if we’re making marginal profit enough to pay for the cost of money and make sure that we continue to do business. So, never mind, you’ll see the translation of this reduction of prices in the retail outlets hopefully within the week,” he said.
