In the immediate wake of Dakota Ditcheva's title winning performance over Taila Santos at the PFL 2024 Championships, the Manchester native is one of the biggest names in the sport for at least one weekend. Fans have immediately begun speculation over how she would do against other great fighters like Valentina Shevchenko, where Ditcheva sits on the pound-for-pound list, and if she will move to the UFC in the near future. In an interview with TalkSport MMA , the martial arts star shed light on at least one of these questions. "It's difficult now because I've just beat the best girl here. I think big fights suit me better, but will anyone watch the PFL season without me?" The question is a valid one. The women's flyweight division did not even exist in PFL until this season, as the promotion shut down their lightweight division following Kayla Harrison's departure, instead forming the 125-lb division for Ditcheva, Santos, and Bellator champ Liz Carmouche. As far as big fights, the reference is clear. Valentina Shevchenko barely beat the woman Dakota just annihilated and is coming off a trilogy where she both lost and drew a fight. The UFC flyweight champion is scheduled to defend her title against French kickboxer Manon Fiorot soon. If Fiorot snatches the belt from Valentina, Manon vs. Ditcheva would also instantly become a big fight, as would fights against the likes of Zhang Weili, who may move up to flyweight, and Alexa Grasso. Even Natalia Silva could be a big fight one day, as a young, rising striking talent like Ditcheva herself. The status of 'Dangerous' Dakota's contract is unknown at present, she may be tied to PFL for the 2025 season and even beyond. Yet if she is not, a bidding war may ensue for her services, or she may go looking for big fights anyways now that she has $1 million in her wallet and money is less of an issue. BODY SHOT FINISH! Is Archer-Daniels-Midland Company (ADM) The Most Profitable Food Stock To Invest In?BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Barcelona lost at home for the first time this season when the Liga leader was stunned by Las Palmas 2-1 on Saturday. Sandro Ramirez and Fábio Silva scored for the Canary Islands club on either side of Raphinha’s equalizer to give Las Palmas its first win at Barcelona in more than 50 years. Barcelona played superbly in the first three months under new coach Hansi Flick and was flying high after convincing victories over Real Madrid in the domestic competition and Bayern Munich in the Champions League. It had won all eight of its home games. But it has gone three rounds of La Liga without a win. Before Las Palmas, it fell at Real Sociedad 1-0 and drew at Celta Vigo 2-2 after squandering a two-goal lead in the final minutes. The dropped points mean Madrid, despite its own troubles , especially in the Champions League, can move ahead of Barcelona in La Liga. It trails Barcelona by four points with two games in hand. “I don’t care about scoring, I care about winning,” Raphinha said after his standout performance was unable to end Barcelona's slump. “We have to take a hard look at what we are doing wrong. We have slipped in our form and are letting games get away form us. We have our next game on Tuesday (at Mallorca), and we need to turn this around so we can win the league.” Atletico Madrid was only two points behind Barcelona in second place — and with the same number of games played — after Antoine Griezmann scored a gem of a goal in a 5-0 demolition of last-placed Valladolid. Las Palmas savored its first victory at Barcelona since the 1971-72 season and just its third victory at the Catalan club overall. The other visits by the modest side that wears all yellow uniforms to Barcelona have ended in 34 defeats and three draws. “We are thrilled because we have made history,” Sandro said. “When you start the season you think that these games are usually going to end in wins for the bigger side, but if there is one thing we believe in is our capacity to work hard all week to get results like this.” Barcelona's Lamine Yamal returned from a right ankle injury that sidelined him for three weeks. Yamal appeared as a halftime substitute and Jasper Cillessen saved his best shot. The Las Palmas goalkeeper also palmed a Raphinha free kick over his bar in the final minutes. Sandro, a former Barcelona youth player, capped a fine five-pass buildup by Las Palmas from its own box as it masterfully undid Barcelona’s high pressure in the 49th minute. Raphinha had already hit the crossbar in the first half before he equalized in the 61st. The Brazil forward took a short pass from Pedri just outside the area, skirted across the edge and drilled a shot between two defenders. But Barcelona was caught pushing forward for a second goal when Silva controlled a ball from Javi Muñoz and sent in a shot bouncing past Iñaki Peña in the 67th. The unexpected loss dampened Barcelona’s celebration of its 125th anniversary, which included the debut of its new mascot “Cat,” a large, yellow feline wearing its team kit. Barcelona lost left back Alejandro Balde early in the game when he couldn’t continue after he crashed into Sandro at full speed. Balde appeared to hurt his upper chest or neck area when he ran into Sandro’s shoulder. He was carried off on a stretcher and replaced by Gerard Martín. Griezmann scored one of the goals of the season when the forward exchanged a quick one-two with Julián Alvarez and used a sleek touch of the inside of his boot to roll the ball with him as he spun before dinking it over the Valladolid goalkeeper. That was the visitor's fourth goal. Shortly after, Valladolid fans stood up and applauded when Griezmann was substituted. “That is what every players wants, to make people enjoy what we do. So I appreciate their warmth,” Griezmann said. Atletico also got goals from Alvarez, Clement Lenglet, Rodrigo de Paul, and Alexander Sorloth. Espanyol beat Celta 3-1 to end a streak of four losses in the league and relieve pressure on coach Manolo González. Alaves also drew with Leganes 1-1 at home. AP soccer: https://apnews.com/hub/soccer
The Infrastructure and Development Bank of Zimbabwe (IDBZ) is targeting to roll out additional accommodation facilities for students countrywide to create a good learning environment for learners at tertiary education level. IDBZ chief executive Mr Thomas Zondo Sakala said the bank wasat various project development stages for other facilities in Lupane, KweKwe,Bindura, Chinhoyi, Masvingo, Gweru, Gwanda, Mutare, Harare and Chipinge. Already, some special purpose vehicles (SPVs) to mobilisefunding for student accommodation facilities at four universities have beencreated. These are Campus Oasis for Lupane State University (LSU), CatholicUniversity of Zimbabwe Students Hostels Private Limited, Multi BUSE Properties PrivateLimited for Bindura University for Science Education and Sesevven Heroes Campus PrivateLimited for Chinhoyi University of Technology. The SPVs are modelled on the Bulawayo Student Accommodation Complex, which was commissioned by President Mnangagwa last Friday and fundedto the tune of US$17,5 million. To develop and deliver the Bulawayo facility, the IDBZ first purchased the land from a private owner who already had the designs but couldnot raise the money for implementation. To mobilise funding for the project, the bank then created a SPV called Zimcampus Properties Private Limited toimplement, own, and operate the complex. As a deliberate strategy, anchored on playing a catalytic role and enabling IDBZ to work on several similar projects across the country, the IDBZ deliberately diluted its shareholding to a minimum. Thus, after Bulawayo facility, the respective shareholding of the three private investors and the IDBZ stands as follows: IDBZ, 7,67 percent, Motor Industry Pension Fund, 19,44 percent, Old Mutual Life Assurance Company Zimbabwe Limited, 49,37 percent and Zimnat, 23,52 percent. Through Zimcampus, the IDBZ secured funding commitments fromOld Mutual, Zimnat and Motor Industry Pension Fund. There are also a number of nominees invested through Old Mutual and Zimnat. Among them is the PublicService Commission Pension Fund who contributed about US1,8 million by the time the project was completed. The partners have rights to participate in the project revenues proportional to their contribution to the development of the facility. The Zimcampus board has since appointed Old Mutual as the facility manager. Until then, the IDBZ was responsible. The complex boasts 516 double rooms, accommodating 1 032 students. The ground floor offers 33 commercial units for businesses like food courts, grocery shops, a sporting facility, a bookshop, banks, apharmacy, laundromats, and supermarkets, exemplifying a modern world-classfacility. Students benefiting from the facility are from institutions like the National University of Science and Technology, Bulawayo Polytechnic College and the Zimbabwe School of Mines. Notably, female students will be the primary beneficiaries, with a 60 percent quota set aside for them. Mr Sakala said the bank had already spent close to US$1 million towards project preparation for LSU and US$600 000 for theCatholic University. "The resources are from our Project Preparation and DevelopmentFacility (PPDF)," said Mr Sakala. He said the bank had accelerated preparations for similar developments at Lupane, Kwekwe and the Catholic University in Harare and "we havealready funded the designs for these three sites." Accommodation for students remains a challenge nationwide, with students forced to stay in inappropriate environments. A significant number stay in private homes without safety and good hygienic conditions. In 2016, out of about 70 000 enrolled in various State universities across the country, only just under 11 000 were provided with accommodation. The remaining 59 000 students head to make their own arrangements. The situation created a lot of learning, social and security risks for thestudents, especially the girls. THE FIRST seat has been filled as the count draws on at Limerick Racecourse, and Fine Gael Minister for Higher and Further Education Patrick O’Donovan is home and dry for another Dáil term. The Fine Gael man was lifted on high in the county centre as the results were declared, but his confidence had been higher since he first stepped foot into the count centre earlier this afternoon. The County Limerick TD took home 11,563 on the first count, just passing out the 11,385 quota. Speaking with tongue firmly in cheek to Newstalk earlier, Deputy O’Donovan said that County Limerick has a “strong tradition” of “fairly accurate tallies” and so he was confident that his seat would be secured. The Fine Gael TD, who found himself becoming the first ever Fine Gael TD in County Limerick to be returned on the first count, thanked his family, wife and children, and supporters who had spurred him on over the three-week election cycle to be voted back into what he described as the “most rural constituency in Ireland”. Reacting to his re-election this evening, Deputy O’Donovan said he was “delighted”. “I want to thank the people of County Limerick for the massive vote they gave me and my supporters, my family, my wife and children especially, and everybody across Limerick who voted for me.” When asked if he was worried if his seat was ever in jeopardy, O’Donovan replied that “we had a positive reception out on the doors” which he said was due to the work he put in over “five years as opposed to five weeks”. Reflecting back on his bout of ill-health earlier last year, when the Fine Gael man had to be hospitalised after collapsing in the Dáil chamber in June 2023, a delighted O’Donovan said that “I could have walked away but I decided I’d stick at it and the people have responded positively to me so I’m delighted”. Hot in contention for the second and third seat are Independent Ireland’s Richard O’Donoghue (10,540 votes) and Fianna Fáil’s Niall Collins (9,284) in what seems a given for the final shape of the three-seater constituency. However, as eliminations go on and transfers become clear, Sinn Féin’s Joanne Collins (6,005) may come back a strong contented. A first count for the Limerick City constituency is expected soon.Putin approves federal budget for 2025-2027(BPT) - The holidays are almost here! WASHINGTON (AP) — Carmelo Pacheco's 18 points helped Mount St. Mary's defeat Howard 79-75 on Saturday. Pacheco shot 6 for 8 from beyond the arc for the Mountaineers (5-2). Dallas Hobbs shot 5 of 16 from the field, including 1 for 8 from 3-point range, and went 6 for 7 from the line to add 17 points. Terrell Ard Jr. had 16 points and shot 4 of 6 from the field and 8 of 8 from the free-throw line. Anwar Gill finished with 18 points for the Bison (3-5). Blake Harper added 15 points, seven rebounds and two steals for Howard. Joshua Strong also had 12 points. ___ The Associated Press created this story using technology provided by and data from . The Associated PressBoth Oklahoma and Providence are hoping they'll have key pieces back in place when the two undefeated teams square off in the first round of the Battle 4 Atlantis on Wednesday in Paradise Island, Bahamas. The Friars (5-0) are expected to have Bryce Hopkins available, according to a report from Field of 68. Hopkins was averaging 15.5 points and 8.6 rebounds last season before suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament Jan. 3. He returned to full-go practices last week, and Tuesday, Providence coach Kim English said Hopkins would be a "game-time decision" against the Sooners. "It's been a process," English said. "We're not rushing it." But English praised Hopkins' progress since the Friars' last game, Nov. 19, when Hopkins went through pregame warmups. "I thought he looked better than I remembered," English said. "He's been in our system for the past year. His patience, his understanding, his versatility on offense and defense ... it's been great to see him in practice." The Sooners (4-0) are hopeful that they'll get Brycen Goodine back. Goodine played for the Friars for two seasons from 2020-22 before transferring to Fairfield for two seasons and then to Oklahoma this offseason. Goodine suffered an ankle injury in the Sooners' opener Nov. 4 and has not played since. "He's a really tough kid and trying to push through it," Oklahoma coach Porter Moser said. "It will truly be one of those game-time decisions. He hasn't gone a full practice yet, just been pieces of practices." Playing with Goodine and Jadon Jones, expected to be two of the Sooners' top outside shooters, Moser said he's learned plenty about his team's offense. "When you're down those shooters, it's really a great weapon to know that a lot of other guys can knock down the open shot," Moser said. "It's been a huge takeaway." The Sooners have been led by Jalon Moore, who is averaging 18.8 points per game, and freshman Jeremiah Fears, who is averaging 15.5. Providence has been led by senior guard Bensley Joseph, who is averaging 11.8 points and 4.0 assists per game. Oklahoma has not played a game closer than 16 points yet this season, with an average margin of victory of 24 points. Providence has won its five games by an average of nearly 17 points per game. The teams will square off against either Davidson or No. 24 Arizona in the second round Thursday, with the winners playing each other in one semifinal while the losers play in a consolation semifinal. --Field Level MediaNEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the Waqf law has no place in the Indian Constitution. He said that Waqf is against social justice and that the Congress made the Waqf Act to increase its vote bank. The Prime Minister was addressing the BJP workers at the party headquarters in New Delhi following the party's smashing victory in the Maharashtra assembly elections. "The Congress made laws for appeasement. The situation was that before leaving the government in 2014, these people had handed over many properties of Delhi and surrounding areas to the Waqf Board. There is no place for Waqf law in the Constitution given to us by Babasaheb Ambedkar, but the Congress did this to increase its vote bank,” he said. Modi also said that Congress tried to give the death penalty to true secularism. “Today, Maharashtra has witnessed the triumph of development, good governance, and genuine social justice. Today, the forces of deception, divisive politics, and family dynasties have been defeated! Today, Maharashtra has strengthened its resolve for a developed India. I congratulate and applaud all BJP and NDA workers across the country,” he added.

• Hedges high inflation, interest Outperforming the average returns at the Nigerian stock market and the entire financial services sector, the share value of United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc has delivered an impressive 375 per cent capital gains to investors in nearly five years. Data from the Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX) at the weekend indicated that investors in UBA have continued to earn an average annual return of about 75 per cent over some five-year period, highlighting UBAs impressive records as a high-yielding, inflation-hedging stock. Nigeria’s benchmark interest rate- Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) stands at 27.25 per cent. The inflation rate stands at 33.88 per cent, according to the October 2024 Consumer Price Index (CPI) report by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). Basically, analysis of trading reports for the period between December 31, 2019, and December 06, 2024, indicated that UBA recorded a cumulative capital gain of 374.83 per cent during the period, representing an average annual gain of 74.97 per cent. Putting this into perspective, this implies that an investor who had invested N500,000 in the shares of UBA at the year’s opening price for 2020, now has a real, immediate market value of more than N2.374 million, due to accumulated capital gains. This excludes accrued cash dividends over the five years. With an average year-to-date return of 35.26 per cent, UBA is ahead of the market by more than twice the average year-to-date return of 15.53 per cent for the banking sector. Also, UBA is ahead as the average year-to-date return for the benchmark index, the All-Share-Index (ASI) of equities on NGX which closed the weekend at 31.34 per cent. UBAs share price had opened 2020 at N7.15 per share, its closing price for December 31, 2019. It closed the weekend at N33.95 per share, 35.26 per cent above its 2024s opening price of N25.10 per share, its closing price for December 30, 2023. The three-digit capital gain highlights UBA as a major driver of the bullish trend in the Nigerian stock market, which has sustained five years of consecutive positive returns. As an investor-friendly stock in terms of consistent and above-average cash dividend payment, UBA is reputed to pay dividends twice a year, an interim dividend and a final dividend. It recently paid an interim dividend of N2 per share on its first half of 2024 results, the highest payout by any bank and one of the three highest yields in the entire stock market. Such an investor who had invested N500,000 at the 2020s opening price would have received a cash dividend of some N139,860 as an interim dividend for the 2024 business year, more than a quarter of his initial investment. UBA is currently offering existing shareholders exclusive opportunities to increase their shareholdings in the bank with its ongoing N239.4 billion rights issue. The pan-African banking group is offering 6.84 billion ordinary shares of 50 kobo each to existing shareholders at N35 per share. The rights issue is pre-allotted on the basis of one new ordinary share of 50 kobo each to every five ordinary shares held as at November 05, 2024. The rights issue is scheduled to close on December 24, 2024. Shareholders have hailed the decision on a rights issue as a deliberate incentive. In a survey, minority retail shareholders, who constitute nearly three-quarters of UBAs nearly 280,000 shareholders, were excited about the rights issue, with most indicating the possibility of applying for more than their pre-allotted shares. Extant rules in the Nigerian market allow shareholders to apply for more shares and also for the company to consider such requests for additional shares. Shareholders can also trade their rights on the stock market. Shareholders said UBAs track records of solid financial performance, dividend policy and capital gain were competitive advantages for the pan-African banking group. Speaking, a longstanding UBAs shareholder and Founder of the Independent Shareholders Association of Nigeria (ISAN), Sir Sunny Nwosu, said “UBA has proven to be dependable and resilient, attributes that have endeared the stock to all cadres of investors. “The bank is doing well, so also are its subsidiaries. From whatever angle you look at it, UBA is a good buy. And I’m talking as a long-time shareholder. It is one bank that prioritises shareholders’ happiness. Go down the lane and check the bank’s dividend history and critical decisions when it comes to shareholders’ issues. “Its a bank one can rest on, so, I’m advising other shareholders to pick up their rights, it’s an opportunity. We are picking up ours and even asking for more.” Another major UBA shareholder and President, Association for the Advancement of Rights of Nigerian Shareholders (AARNS), Dr Faruk Umar described UBA as a solid bank with a lot more to offer the shareholders in the future. “I strongly advise shareholders to pick up their rights as I am very hopeful the price will go up after the rights offer is concluded. All members of our Association are going to buy their rights as we strongly believe in the quality of the board, management, and staff of the bank,” Umar said. Market analysts are unanimous that share prices are illustrative of the fundamental values of quoted companies. For the nine-month ended September 30, 2024, UBA reported 83.2 per cent growth in gross earnings to N2.398 trillion, almost a double of N1.308 trillion recorded in the third quarter of 2023. Operating income rose from N1.02 trillion in the third quarter of 2023 to N1.54 trillion in the third quarter of 2024, an increase of about 51 per cent. Profit before tax increased to N603.48 billion compared with N502.09 billion recorded in the third quarter of 2023. After taxes, net profit also rose from N449.26 billion in the third quarter of 2023 to N525.31 billion in the third quarter of 2024. Earnings per share thus improved from N12.93 to N14.78. Group balance sheet size expanded by 54 per cent to N31.80 trillion by September 2024 as against N20.653 trillion recorded at the end of December 2023. The bank benefitted largely from its technology-led initiatives targeted at improving customer experience over the past few years, with total deposits rising to N26.50 trillion, representing a 52.7 per cent rise from N17.355 trillion at the end of December 2023. The deposit base was driven by increased brand appeal across the retail and corporate markets. Customer deposits had jumped from N14.8 trillion to N22.97 trillion while deposits from banks increased from N2.46 trillion to N3.53 trillion. Loans and advances to customers grew by 46.8 per cent from N5.23 trillion in December 2023 to N7.68 trillion in September 2024. While the paid-up share capital remained unchanged at N17.10 billion, total equity jumped by 76.8 per cent from N2.03 trillion in December 2023 to N3.59 trillion in September 2024. Managing Director, Arthur Steven Asset Management, Mr. Olatunde Amolegbe, said share pricing at the stock market thrives on a concept of forward-pricing mechanism, where investors take into consideration the potential future return based on available track records and emerging developments. Managing Director, of HighCap Securities Limited, Mr. David Adonri, said share price is a reflection of the market value for a company, comprising both past performances and future expectations. Kylian Mbappe “can do better” manager Carlo Ancelotti insisted after the Real Madrid forward missed another penalty during his side’s loss to Athletic Club . Mbappe, 25, had a 69th-minute penalty saved by Julen Agirrezabala as Madrid went on to lose 2-1 at San Mames Stadium and lose ground in the La Liga title race. Advertisement It is the second consecutive spot kick that Mbappe has missed after being denied by Caoimhin Kelleher during Madrid’s 2-0 defeat to Liverpool in the Champions League last week. Ancelotti said on Mbappe: “I haven’t spoken to him (Mbappe). We missed the penalty, but I don’t have to evaluate a player’s game by the penalty, sometimes they score and sometimes they don’t. He’s sad but we have to keep going. “He’s much more than at his 1%. He’s not at his best but we have to give him time. He has scored ten goals. He can do better, of course, and he is working on it.” Mbappe, who is yet to hit his best form at his new club after making the move from Paris Saint-Germain this summer, took to social media to comment on his miss from the spot. “Bad result,” he said. “A big mistake in a match where every detail counts. I take full responsibility for it. A difficult moment but it’s the best time to change this situation and show who l am.” Mbappe has scored 10 goals in 20 appearances but has often been deployed as a central striker, having previously excelled from the left in France. Jude Bellingham , who scored a penalty for Madrid during their 2-0 victory over Getafe on Sunday, stepped aside to allow Mbappe to take the spot kick on Wednesday evening. When asked about hit penalty takers, Ancelotti said: “When Vinicius (Junior) is there. He had usually taken them and he had all taken them well. There are three, Mbappé, Bellingham, and Vinicius.” “They both (Bellingham and Mbappé) spoke, today he took the responsibility to take it and it didn’t go well. This can happen.” The defeat is Real’s fifth of the season in all competitions and it leaves them in second place, four points behind league leaders Barcelona and a point above Atletico Madrid.
