Now the Saints, who’ve remained mathematically alive in the playoff race by winning three of four, might have to play without Carr again — and it didn’t go well the last time. Saints interim coach Darren Rizzi declined on Monday to rule out Carr for any of New Orleans' final four games because of his injured non-throwing hand or his concussion . Both injuries occurred when he tried to leap for a first down and crashed hard to the turf during the fourth quarter of New Orleans' 14-11 victory over the reeling New York Giants on Sunday. “We’re not going to rule him out just yet,” Rizzi said. “We have to see in the next day or two what the healing process is like and see if he can function. “The good news it’s not his throwing hand,” Rizzi said. “The bad news is we’re obviously dealing with an injury here that we have to kind of play it by ear.” Rizzi noted that Carr must clear the concussion protocol first. After that, he said, the Saints can see how well Carr can operate with his hand injury. “It's been done before,” Rizzi said when asked about the prospect of an NFL QB playing with an injured non-throwing hand. “It appears at moment that it's non-surgical, which is a big aspect of it. ... That's why we're going to discuss the options.” Last season, Los Angeles Chargers QB Justin Herbert played with a fractured finger on his non-throwing hand . Buffalo Bills QB Josh Allen has played part of this season with an injured non-throwing hand . If Carr can't play, his replacement will be either second-year pro Jake Haener or rookie Spencer Rattler. Rattler started three games earlier this season when Carr had an oblique injury — all losses by New Orleans, which was in the midst of a seven-game skid. “We've just got to surround whomever it is and pick him up and get him rolling with the rest of us,” guard Lucas Patrick said. “It's just another step of adversity in this long season that we’ve had.” New Orleans' interior defensive line is coming off one of its better games. Defensive tackles Bryan Bresee and Khalen Saunders accounted for both New Orleans' sacks in New York. The Saints also held the Giants to 112 yards rushing — a lower opponent rushing total than in seven other games this season. The Saints' 92 yards rushing offensively was their fourth-lowest total all season and the lowest in any of their victories. Running back Kendre Miller's future is looking a bit brighter now. He has played in just three games this season because of hamstring injuries and his lack of readiness was criticized by since-fired coach Dennis Allen earlier this season. Miller also has yet to rush for more than 36 yards in a game. But against the Giants, he earned praise for the speed, strength and elusiveness he was able to show on a couple of clutch runs, including an 8-yard run for his first and only touchdown this season. Patrick said Miller deserved credit on his scoring run for staying upright and continuing to push forward — with the help of some teammates — after he was met at the 5-yard line by a Giants defender. Patrick said if Miller didn't give the extra effort and stay on his feet, his teammates would not have had the chance to help push him across the goal line. “Kendre's definitely a bright, young runner and he's exciting to block for,” Patrick said. Blake Grupe was 0 for 2 on field goal attempts, although both were from beyond 50 yards and one was blocked. Those were Grupe's first two failures from beyond 50 yards this season. In addition to Carr, reserve linebacker D’Marco Jackson left Sunday's game with an ankle injury. 0 — The number of games the Saints have won when Carr does not play. They've gone 5-5 in his starts this season. The Saints are back home Sunday against Washington in what could be ex-New Orleans cornerback Marshon Lattimore's first game with the Commanders. The game also marks the return to Louisiana of quarterback Jayden Daniels, who won the Heisman Troply last year at LSU. RADNOR — One thing surprised Obinna Nwobodo in watching a replay of Villanova’s win over Eastern Kentucky in the first round of the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs last Saturday. When all was done in a 22-17 victory, the senior defensive lineman needed a broadcast-aided reminder that the score had once been 14-0 in the visiting Colonels’ favor. That shock owes perhaps to how quickly EKU had gone up two scores, needing less than 10 minutes, or the circumstances that spoke more to fortune than domination. But it also illustrates how this Villanova team tends to regard deficits. Trailing after a quarter or a half isn’t that big of a deal to a veteran Wildcats team. Why is not terribly clear, from a census of players. But Saturday was the third time this year that Villanova (10-3) has won a game while trailing in the second half, which offers more confidence for the challenge that lies ahead in Texas against the sixth-seeded University of Incarnate Word on Saturday (2 p.m., ESPN+). Villanova’s journey to a playoff win for the second consecutive year has a lot to do with an ability to persevere in the second half of games. The Wildcats shut out Eastern Kentucky, 13-0, after halftime, a week after a 17-7 edge over Delaware. The team is plus-88 in the second half of games this year (184 points scored, 96 allowed) and plus-61 in the fourth quarter (98-37). “I have no idea,” Nwobodo said when asked for a reason. “Honestly, I think we’ve got a lot of passionate guys who express how they feel and how we need to go out and perform. So I think hearing that from a lot of the guys (at halftime) just makes us want to turn it up a little bit more.” Coach Mark Ferrante played up the other side of it, focusing on slow starts. Villanova is just plus-3 in first halves. Against Delaware, it let a 21-0 lead slip away after a special teams miscue with the ball blowing off the tee helped the Blue Hens create momentum from nothing. A 77-yard rushing touchdown by Joshua Carter on EKU’s second play from scrimmage and a 19-yard touchdown drive after a Connor Watkins interception put the Colonels up 14-0 a week later, from which the Wildcats had to recover. “It was one explosive play and a short field off a tipped interception,” Ferrante said. “So, it’s not like they drove it down, two five-minute, 10-play drives and then you’d be a little more concerned. We got down early, kind of slowed our momentum a little bit where we couldn’t get any momentum the way it happened there. But .... we’re resilient, and we’re going to just keep going until the clock says zeros in the fourth.” Watkins used the memory of the Delaware game to steady him, knowing how quickly the Blue Hens’ 21-point edge had vanished and how EKU’s could. Nwobodo said, “there wasn’t a point in the game where I was truthfully fearful,” so confident is he in the Wildcats’ defense to stand up when called upon. Nwobodo invoked an in-game moment earlier in the season when the Wildcats were struggling. The team, where his fourth-year-senior status puts him below the median experience level around fifth- and sixth-year players, had no hesitation in being blunt. “We all looked at each other like, ‘Bro, we’re not playing the way we should,’” Nwobodo said. “So we told the guys to lock in, and that’s kind of what happened.” That kind of honesty is what they’ll lean on in San Antonio against the sixth-seeded Cardinals (10-2), who received a bye to the quarterfinals as the Southland Conference champions. It’s Villanova’s first game against a team from Texas since being eliminated by Sam Houston State in Radnor in this round in 2014. Villanova’s last trip to the Lone Star State came in 2010, upsetting Stephen F. Austin in Nacogdoches in the second round on the way to the Final Four. Nova is 1-2 all-time in the postseason against UIW’s Southland Conference, with just the Stephen F. Austin win. The ‘Cats lost to Southeastern Louisiana in 2019 and McNeese State in 2002. Nwobodo, who played a season of eight-man football to wrap up his Delco Christian tenure, was at the heart of the defense that pitched the shutout against EKU. The Wilmington native had five tackles, among a career-best 36 this season, which includes four tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks and a forced fumble. He has focused on keeping the routine the same this week, which was the procedure a week ago as well. The cohesion of the team is something he hopes will be a difference-maker in Texas. “I don’t really think there’s much that can break us,” he said. “We love the hostile environments. We live for those. That’s what football is all about. Throughout our season there’s been high, lows, but one thing that’s never changed is that we never fractured as a team. So we’re trying to carry that until whenever.”We are pleased to announce the inaugural open community conference for NASA’s Habitable Worlds Observatory, to be held at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg Center in Washington, DC, from July 28‐31, 2025. SALT LAKE CITY -- A Department of Homeland Security agent who the FBI says conspired with another agent to sell an illicit drug known as “bath salts” pleaded not guilty to a drug distribution conspiracy charge Friday in federal court. A grand jury in Salt Lake City brought the criminal charge against Special Agent David Cole of the Homeland Security Investigations unit earlier this week. The indictment alleges that Cole abused his position as a federal law enforcement agent to obtain and sell drugs for profit. If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison. Cole took drugs that had been seized as evidence, telling colleagues he was using them for legitimate investigations, and instead sold them to a confidential informant who resold the drugs for profit on the streets of Utah, according to the indictment. The informant, who has a lengthy criminal history, had been recruited by federal agents to work for them upon his release from prison. But in addition to conducting controlled buys from suspected drug dealers as directed by investigators, the informant said he was compelled by Cole and another agent to also engage in illegal sales. The investigation began after the informant’s defense attorney contacted the U.S. Attorney in Utah in October to report that agents had required him to engage in potentially illegal acts dating from last spring to early December. Details of drug sales offered by the informant were confirmed through surveillance and other sources, the FBI said. Cole and the second agent — identified in court documents only as “Person A” — profited up to $300,000 from the illegal scheme, according to an FBI affidavit filed in the case. FBI spokesperson Sandra Barker said Friday that “Person A” had not been arrested or charged, but the investigation was ongoing. Cole, 50, of South Jordan, Utah, entered the courtroom Friday handcuffed and hunched over, wearing a white and gray, striped jumpsuit. U.S. Magistrate Judge Dustin Pead accepted Cole's not guilty plea and scheduled a trial for the week of Feb. 24. Federal officials say Cole’s indictment sends a message that officers who break the law and undermine the public’s trust in law enforcement will be prosecuted. “A drug dealer who carries a badge is still a drug dealer — and one who has violated an oath to uphold the law and protect the public,” said Nicole Argentieri, head of the U.S. Justice Department’s Criminal Division. "No one is above the law.” Special Agent Shohini Sinha, who leads the FBI's Salt Lake City field office, said Cole’s alleged actions helped fuel an already devastating drug crisis . Ingestion of synthetic bath salts, also known as Alpha-PVP or cathinone, can lead to bizarre behavior such as paranoia and extreme strength, according to authorities who say it’s similar to methamphetamine, cocaine or ecstasy. They are unrelated to actual bathing products. Cole’s attorney, Alexander Ramos, has declined to directly address the criminal allegations but said his client has a strong reputation within the federal law enforcement community. Ramos did not immediately respond Friday to emails seeking comment on the not guilty plea. The Homeland Security Investigations department where Cole worked conducts federal criminal investigations into the illegal movement of people, goods, money, weapons, drugs and sensitive technology into, out of and across the U.S. Cole and the second agent had their credentials suspended but have not been fired, according to court documents.SHENZHEN, China , Dec. 20, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- As technology continues to evolve, consumer electronics have become essential to everyday life. A former Allianz fund manager was spared prison time on Friday over his role in a meltdown of private investment funds sparked by the Covid-19 pandemic that caused an estimated $7 billion of investor losses. Gregoire Tournant, 57, of Basalt, Colorado, pleaded guilty in June to two counts of investment adviser fraud. He agreed to give up $17.5 million in ill-gotten gains, including bonuses that were inflated by his fraud. Chief Judge Laura Taylor Swain of the federal court in Manhattan sentenced him to 18 months home confinement and three years probation. Tournant’s defence lawyers had urged Swain to spare him prison time, citing health issues. They also said Tournant had expressed remorse and called the case less serious than the typical investment adviser fraud scheme. “We are deeply appreciative to the Court for imposing this just sentence and recognising that incarceration was not appropriate in this case,” defence lawyers Seth Levine and Daniel Alonso said in a statement. Prosecutors with the US attorney’s office in Manhattan had recommended that Tournant be sentenced to at least seven years in prison. They argued that more than 100 investors in Tournant’s funds lost billions of dollars when they collapsed and that he continued to minimize the importance of what he had done. The case stemmed from the March 2020 collapse of the German insurer’s now-defunct Structured Alpha funds, which Tournant had created and oversaw as chief investment officer. In May 2022, Allianz agreed to pay more than $6 billion and its US asset management unit pleaded guilty to securities fraud to resolve government probes into the collapse. Two other former Allianz fund managers pleaded guilty at the time. The Structured Alpha funds had bet heavily on stock options, in a manner designed to limit losses in a market selloff, which Tournant likened to a form of insurance. Prosecutors said Tournant misled investors about the funds’ risks by altering performance data and diverging from his promised hedging strategy and obstructed a US Securities and Exchange Commission probe by directing a colleague to lie. The funds once had more than $11 billion of assets under management, but lost about $7 billion in February and March 2020 as the start of the pandemic set off a worldwide market panic. Prosecutors said the fraud ran from 2014 through March 2020, with Tournant being paid more than $60 million over that time. The Philadelphia Eagles (11-2) are one of the hottest teams in the league, but even the hottest teams can play cold. The Eagles won their week 14 home against a surprisingly difficult Carolina Panthers (3-10). There were many areas where the home team struggled in the 22-16 victory. There were some moments on the field and after the game with quarterback Jalen Hurts and wide receiver A.J. Brown seemed to not connect. While some might believe drama is once again developing with the Eagles, one football analyst believes it is just bad play that needs to be fixed. The Philadelphia Eagles have a “elementary” offense The Eagles almost lost their nine-game win streak as their offense struggled behind the poor play of the passing game. Hurts completed 14-of-21 of his passes for 108 yards and two touchdowns. The leading receiver of the game Brown, who caught four receptions for 43. On Monday, ESPN’s Get Up crew talked about the dysfunction of the Eagles’ offense, starting with Hurts’ inability to connect with Brown. While analysts Rex Ryan and Damian Woody believe the drama is to blame, Dan Orlovsky believes it is as simple as the passing game not playing well. “Simple, it’s very simple. It’s very elementary. It’s very basic. A.J., let’s take a shot and hit a big play down the field. Yesterday, A.J. Brown got his first catch, his first touch, his first target in the second quarter with 1:26 left on the clock. That’s a problem. “They will have to have a better passing game in the playoffs to go win.” “This is a pass game that has been darn over these past six, seven and eight weeks. They don’t ask a lot out of it. It’s A.J., go win one-on-one. Yesterday, Jalen did not play well when it comes to that play example and for them to win in the playoffs. He cannot replicate what they did yesterday.” Eagles’ weak link It is not hard to believe that the Eagles’ passing offense might be one of the worst units on their team. Considering their running game, the offensive line and the defense is among the most elite units in the NFL, it is not a terrible thing. One of the biggest reasons the Eagles had one of the most efficient offenses in the league is because of the dynamic dual-threat ability of Hurts and the offense. Hurts was dangerous as a passer while in the RPO. As a pure pocket passer, he has had moments where he struggles like connecting on deep passes to Brown. Hurts doesn’t possess a powerful arm to consistently launch the ball down the field, an area that Brown excels in. It is up to head coach Nick Sirianni to create more efficient game plans for Hurts to excel in the passing game. Running back Saquon Barkley has been an MVP campaign based on his dominance and production for the Eagles’ offense. Orlovsky finished his discussion by talking about what has made Philadelphia successful this season. “This win streak has been built on the back of what?” “The running game and the defense” “So the passing game is going to have to get better, it’s not where they want it to be.” This article first appeared on NFL Analysis Network and was syndicated with permission.
