On November 14 the Government announced that up to $60 million will be ring-fenced from the Regional Infrastructure Fund to explore the potential of supercritical geothermal technology to help secure New Zealand’s future energy needs. The aim of supercritical geothermal technology (SCGT) is to harness extremely high-temperature fluids from deep underground to generate renewable energy more efficiently than conventional geothermal technology. It is a landmark moment for New Zealand’s energy sector. This funding not only highlights the Government’s commitment to renewable energy but also underscores the pivotal role that geothermal energy plays in New Zealand’s energy mix. New Zealand is particularly rich in geothermal energy, with its use dating back to central North Island Māori for heating, cooking and therapeutic purposes. It’s a cornerstone of New Zealand’s renewable energy landscape, providing a stable and reliable source of electricity, contributing significantly to meeting the country’s energy needs. As New Zealand transitions towards a more sustainable energy future, the role of geothermal energy will become even more critical, particularly for the electrification and hydrogenation of our transport fleet, which will need a substantial increase in renewable energy capacity. And no, I am not referring to the song by the rock band, ‘Poison’. The main takeaway from this expression is that everybody and everything, even something as beautiful and desired as a rose, has imperfections and struggles – the thorns symbolise the challenges and misfortunes in life. Everyone, including you and I, has flaws. Being human comes naturally with this. It is impossible to live a life devoid of mistakes and shortcomings. “No one is perfect.” “It is impossible to achieve perfection.” These two sayings make it evident that it is useless to pursue perfection in performances or appearances as it is unattainable. Yet, they are also often misinterpreted, and occasionally they are terribly misconstrued and misused. These phrases are intended to simply explain the existence of flaws that are natural or over which we have little control, but ironically, they are sometimes used to shield the current self from legitimate responsibility and blame, or as a means of cover-up. This makes it impossible to avoid criticism and accountability, as well as the humility and hard work that come with becoming a better person. Saying ‘nobody’s perfect’ is far easier than saying ‘I’m sorry for what I did; I take full responsibility; I’ll be better next time’. You could say the former after knowing you have hurt or annoyed someone, but that does not mean they were expecting too much (perfection) from you. Their feelings are fairly reasonable. It is acceptable for them to tell you what you did to them and how it affected them. We all have boundaries that should be respected and safeguarded, after all, and maintaining boundaries does not equate to demanding perfection. If we discount problems or issues as totally ‘human’ since ‘no one is perfect’, it transfers the guilt to our humanity. While it is true that no one is flawless, not everyone attacks people, takes things from others, or commits other types of mistakes. Those are personal decisions that cannot be attributed to anything else. Rather than trying too hard to defend or make excuses, it is wiser to genuinely apologise and work to change when your actions have hurt someone. This is because, despite the fact that none of us are perfect, we all have the potential to get better. The word ‘perfect’ refers to an idealised objective that is unachievable and constantly shifting. The word ‘potential’, on the other hand, is more empowering. It makes our unrealised capabilities clear to us and drives us to progress. Life has taught me that progress should always take priority over perfection since, in fact, there is always room for growth and new standards are always being set. After all, it is more important to enjoy the journey than just the final destination. I believe that fear of failure is another factor that contributes to perfectionism, as I am a perfectionist myself. A person with this ego-based fear is unable to try new things and take chances because they are terrified of seeming flawed and bad. I have been gradually starting to accept the notion that it is ‘okay’ to have numerous thorns, which consequently opens up a whole new world of experiences and boundless opportunities. Looking back, despite the constant discontent that I whine about, it is because of this realisation that I am where I am and have what I have today – my support system, my appearance, my responsibilities, the places I visited, and the good deeds I have been able to contribute to. For instance, I have heard comments about how timid and socially awkward I am with a lot of people for much of my life, and those comments honestly made me feel so judged. When I hear those comments now, I don’t feel much. Why? What has changed? In fact, those comments keep coming back to me, but I have come to the conclusion that accepting who you are makes life much simpler – this is the relationship between progress and perfection that I was talking about. As we approach the year’s last month, many of us take account of the last 12 months and reflect on our accomplishments – and, more often, our shortcomings and things that were not perfect. We also often make resolutions and goals for the upcoming year at this time. For perfectionists, this can be dreadful. We may focus less on the progress we made and more on what was missing between our goals and what we actually accomplished. But guess what? Something is better than nothing, and done is better than perfect, since progress is the more important objective here. Because nothing is perfect, you will also never be perfect. This is great news since it also means you will always have the potential to become a better person than you were a day before. Most people consider thorns to be dangerous since they cut and scratch us. However, every mark tells a story, a victory, and an indication of a person’s strength. Since I just finished watching ‘Arcane Season 2’, one of the best series I have seen this year, I will close my piece with one of the most memorable quotes from one of the characters: “There is no prize in perfection. Only an end to pursuit.” In Viktor’s ‘Glorious Evolution’, human suffering was eliminated, but there was also no longer striving and no triumph over hardship. Umanmielen clearly didn't like what he heard and made his way toward the seats. Officers quickly stepped in and escorted Umanmielen back toward the locker room. They then walked him directly to the team's waiting busses, but more fans were in the path and shouted at him again. Umanmielen turned and started toward the fans before officers stepped in and stopped him. It was the latest bit of oddness for Umanmielen, who wore an orange Gators ski mask through Ole Miss' practice facility late in the week. He finished the game with seven tackles, including a sack. There was no noticeable swelling or lump, aside from minor marks via treatment he received since last Sunday’s once-subtle injury. His muscular 24-year-old build appeared stout as ever. Looks can be deceiving. So can words, in any NFL team’s injury descriptions, any Instagram doctors’ prognosis, or any reporters’ déjà vu feelings. “I don’t want to say there’s long-term concern,” coach Kyle Shanahan said Friday, referring to Purdy’s MRI exam and indicating the quarterback will miss Sunday’s game at Green Bay. Brandon Allen will make the spot start. For how long, though? Exercising caution is wise to protect a bona fide franchise quarterback who threw for a 49ers-record 4,280 yards last season on a surgically repaired elbow and is due for a 49ers-record contract extension at this season’s likely bitter end. Shanahan and general manager John Lynch indicated that Purdy’s MRI on Monday did not reveal a dire, franchise-altering ailment. “We thought he just needed some rest and really weren’t concerned about him not being good this week,” Shanahan said. “But when he started up Thursday, (his shoulder) just surprised him, surprised us, how it felt.” It’s no surprise, however, how a shoulder injury can grow into a bigger firestorm. For now, public proclamations are minimizing any long-range ramifications. Purdy was not made available to reporters, but as he walked through the locker room Friday, he tried to exude a positive outlook, saying: “We’re all good.” His demeanor remained as upbeat and polite as ever in an ensuing conversation with a staff member. Neither of Purdy’s understudies, Allen and Josh Dobbs, has a history of shoulder injuries, so they were hesitant to speak about how fear-inducing those must be for a quarterback. “I’m not too worried about it, I don’t think any of our guys are,” Allen said. “He’ll rehab and get back as fast as he can. And as far as shoulders, it happens. I don’t think it’ll be anything lingering or long-term for him.” Three seasons ago, when the 49ers last visited Lambeau Field, Jimmy Garoppolo was a week removed from hurting his shoulder – a torn capsule, the 49ers said – in a wild-card playoff win at Dallas. Go back nine years and there is another 49ers quarterback quandary. Colin Kaepernick was listed as probable to play at Seattle, but a day before kickoff, the 49ers surprisingly put him on injured reserve. He headed for surgery to repair a torn labrum in his non-throwing shoulder. Benched three weeks before that IR move, Kaepernick spent the ensuing offseason rehabilitating for what would be one final season with the 49ers and the NFL. An even messier shoulder story unfolded with Kaepernick’s predecessor, Alex Smith. A 2007 feud ensued between Smith and third-year coach Mike Nolan, who publicly dismissed Smith’s shoulder pain that traced back to a Sept. 30 separation. Smith played hurt a few games, then confessed to the nagging pain in his shoulder, after the 49ers had listed him out of practice with a forearm strain. Smith rallied and rebuilt his career, albeit under other coaches. Now it’s Purdy stepping aside for an unknown length of time. Allen relayed their Friday conversation: “He believes in me, says ‘You’re here for a reason. Go in, step up, play well.’ He’ll be back. So I’m not worried about it.” “He’s doing well. He’s in good spirits,” Dobbs added. “Obviously, I don’t want to speak for him, but he wants to be out there. So he will work his butt off to get back out there, and we’ll hold it down for him until he gets back.”
Puerto Rico's Danny Mejia has been named Mr World 2024. The announcement was made during the grand Mr World coronation on Saturday at NovaWorld in the province of Bình Thuận in Vietnam. The 28-year-old mortgage loan originator and health sciences graduate from San Juan also won the talent and sport challenge fast-track competitions. Mejia will spend his year of reign travelling to various countries, raising funds, and promoting social projects under the Beauty With a Purpose initiative. Joining Mejia on the podium were first runner-up Tuan Ngoc Pham from Vietnam, second runner-up Toni Company from Spain and third runner-up Mr World Angola Filipe Salvador Maria. Jamaica's Tarique Barrett did not place in the Top 20, but was named Mr World Caribbean. The 24-year-old University of the West Indies, Mona student, who is pursuing a double major in marketing and accounts, now holds one of seven continental titles and will stay in Vietnam, along with Mejia and the other continental winners, for a week longer for a media tour. The Yomiuri Shimbun 7:00 JST, December 7, 2024 A delegation of 30 people from Nihon Hidankyo (Japan Confederation of A- and H-Bomb Sufferers Organizations), which has been chosen as this year’s Nobel Peace Prize laureate, will attend the award ceremony in Oslo on Tuesday. This is the first in a series of interviews held with hibakusha atomic bomb survivors and others on what they want to tell the world at a time when the threat of nuclear weapons is growing. * * Interview with Sueichi Kido Nihon Hidankyo Secretary General When an atomic bomb was dropped in Nagasaki on Aug. 9, 1945, I was near my house, about 2 kilometers from the hypocenter. I was 5 years old. I was thrown into the air by the blast and suffered burns to half my face from the accompanying wave of heat. I cannot forget the sight of blackened bodies lying by the roadside near the hypocenter, or the many injured people seeking water. I always worried that I might develop leukemia someday. When I was in high school, I was told by a teacher that I must never talk about being an atomic bomb victim anywhere other than Nagasaki. I also learned that some people had their engagements broken off because they were hibakusha, and rumors spread that “A-bombs are contagious.” I moved out of Nagasaki Prefecture when I started university. For a long time, I was unable to reveal that I was a hibakusha. I got married and had a daughter. After it became known I was a hibakusha, my daughter was called “dirty” at school. Nihon Hidankyo has been campaigning for the recognition of four categories of atomic bomb damage: life, body, livelihood and mind. I think that the issue of mental harm, which is invisible to others, was the biggest challenge for hibakusha. In July 1990, more than 100 hibakusha gathered at a consultation meeting held by Gifu Prefecture and Nihon Hidankyo when I was a junior college teacher in the prefecture. There was no chapter of the organization in the prefecture at that time, and I learned for the first time that there were many hibakusha who were unable to speak out about their experiences. I established the Gifu prefectural chapter of Nihon Hidankyo the following year. In 2017, I became the secretary general of Nihon Hidankyo. Since then, I have spoken at various international conferences, saying that atomic bombings are “weapons of absolute evil that do not even allow people to live like human beings.” In my lectures and on other occasions, I often say I became a hibakusha four times: when the atomic bomb was dropped; when I saw a photo magazine reporting on the damage caused by the atomic bomb at the age of 12 and realized I was different from other people; when I established the Gifu prefectural chapter of Nihon Hidankyo and joined the movement against nuclear weapons; and in recent years when I decided to devote the rest of my life to my “final task” of ensuring that nobody will ever become a hibakusha again, even as the international situation regarding nuclear weapons has been deteriorating. I felt like the winning of the prize was a message: “Don’t run away.” I want to continue my efforts as long as I live. I now need a cane to walk, and developed cerebral sclerosis this year. But I have no hesitation about going to Oslo to attend the ceremony to fulfill my responsibilities as secretary general. My daughter will come with me. I will bring photos of the cities of Nagasaki and Hiroshima devastated by the atomic bombings to Oslo. I want to convey the reality of the atrocities. I hope that everyone will know about the wish that hibakusha have for nuclear weapons to be eliminated, and that everyone will face up to the danger these weapons pose for all human beings. While Kentucky claims eight NCAA Tournament crowns and the most wins in college basketball history, Jackson State has never won an NCAA Tournament game and enters the matchup looking for its first win of the season. Impressive tradition and current record aside, Kentucky (4-0) returned no scholarship players from last season's team that was knocked off by Oakland in the NCAA Tournament. New coach Mark Pope and his essentially all-new Wildcats are off to a promising start. Through four games, Kentucky is averaging 94.3 points per game, and with 11.5 3-pointers made per game, the team is on pace to set a school record from long distance. The Wildcats boast six double-figure scorers with transfer guards Otega Oweh (from Oklahoma, 15.0 ppg) and Koby Brea (from Dayton, 14.5 ppg) leading the team. The Wildcats defeated Duke 77-72 on Nov. 12 but showed few signs of an emotional letdown in Tuesday's 97-68 win over a Lipscomb team picked to win the Atlantic Sun Conference in the preseason.
