NEW YORK -- NEW YORK (AP) — Daniel Penny chose not to testify and defense lawyers rested their case Friday at his trial in the death of an agitated man he choked on a subway train. Closing arguments are expected after Thanksgiving in the closely watched manslaughter case about the death of Jordan Neely , 30. The encounter between Penny, a white Marine veteran, and Neely, a homeless Black man with mental health and drug problems, has been drawn into U.S. political divides over race, public safety and cities’ ability to handle mental illness and social ills. Penny, 26, has pleaded not guilty. Many criminal defendants don't take the stand, and juries are routinely instructed that they cannot hold defendants' silence — a constitutional right — against them. One of Penny’s lawyers, Daniel Kenniff, noted after court that jurors did hear from Penny, in the form of his recorded statements to police minutes and hours after he put Neely in a chokehold. “Virtually everything he said then is consistent with credible testimony of his fellow passengers," Kenniff said. Penny told police that he wrapped his arm around Neely's neck, took him to the floor and “put him out” because he was angrily throwing things and making threatening comments. Penny said on police video that he hadn't wanted to injure Neely but rather to keep him from hurting anyone else. A number of other passengers testified that they were scared of Neely and relieved that Penny grabbed hold of him. A man who later stepped in and held down Neely's arms, however, told jurors that he urged Penny to let go but that the veteran kept choking Neely for a time. Prosecutors say Penny meant to protect people but recklessly used too much force, overlooking Neely's humanity and making no effort to spare his life. City medical examiners ruled that the chokehold killed Neely. A pathologist hired by Penny's defense disputed that finding . Prosecutors, defense lawyers and the judge are set to meet Monday to hash out jury instructions.Despite the emotional weight of the task at hand, Liang Xin remained composed and focused, determined to make the most of the limited time she had. Japanese automakers Nissan Motor Corp and Honda Motor Co confirmed Wednesday that they are discussing closer collaboration but denied reports they have decided on a merger. Nissan’s share price soared nearly 24% in Tokyo after reports citing unnamed sources said it might merge with Honda to form the world’s third-largest automaking group. Honda’s share price fell as much as 3%. Nissan alliance member Mitsubishi Motors Corp. is also part of the talks. Trading in Nissan’s shares was suspended but then resumed after the companies jointly issued a statement saying they were “considering various possibilities for future collaboration, but no decisions have been made.” The ascent of Chinese automakers is rattling the industry at a time when manufacturers are struggling to shift from fossil fuel-driven vehicles to electrics. Relatively inexpensive EVs from China's BYD, Great Wall and Nio are eating into the market shares of U.S. and Japanese car companies in China and elsewhere. Japanese automakers have lagged behind big rivals in EVs and are now trying to cut costs and make up for lost time. Nissan, Honda and Mitsubishi announced in August that they will share components for electric vehicles like batteries and jointly research software for autonomous driving to adapt better to dramatic changes in the auto industry centered around electrification. A preliminary agreement between Honda, Japan's second-largest automaker, and Nissan, third largest, was announced in March. A merger could result in a behemoth worth about $55 billion based on the market capitalization of all three automakers. Joining forces would help the smaller Japanese automakers add scale to compete with Japan's market leader Toyota Motor Corp. and with Germany’s Volkswagen AG. Toyota itself has technology partnerships with Japan's Mazda Motor Corp. and Subaru Corp. Nissan has truck-based body-on-frame large SUVs such as the Armada and Infiniti QX80 that Honda doesn't have, with large towing capacities and good off-road performance, said Sam Fiorani, vice president of AutoForecast Solutions. Nissan also has years of experience building batteries and electric vehicles, and gas-electric hybird powertrains that could help Honda in developing its own EVs and next generation of hybrids, he said. “Nissan does have some product segments where Honda doesn’t currently play,” that a merger or partnership could help, said Sam Abuelsamid, a Detroit-area automotive industry analsyt. While Nissan's electric Leaf and Ariya haven't sold well in the U.S., they're solid vehicles, Fiorani said. “They haven't been resting on their laurels, and they have been developing this technology,” he said. “They have new products coming that could provide a good platform for Honda for its next generation.” Nissan said last month that it was slashing 9,000 jobs, or about 6% of its global work force, and reducing global production capacity by 20% after reporting a quarterly loss of 9.3 billion yen ($61 million). Earlier this month it reshuffled its management and its chief executive, Makoto Uchida, took a 50% pay cut to take responsibility for the financial woes, saying Nissan needed to become more efficient and respond better to market tastes, rising costs and other global changes. Fitch Ratings recently downgraded Nissan's credit outlook to “negative,” citing worsening profitability, partly due to price cuts in the North American market. But it noted that it has a strong financial structure and solid cash reserves that amounted to 1.44 trillion yen ($9.4 billion). Nissan's share price has fallen to the point where it is considered something of a bargain. A report in the Japanese financial magazine Diamond said talks with Honda gained urgency after the Taiwan maker of iPhones Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., better known as Foxconn, began exploring a possible acquisition of Nissan as part of its push into the EV sector. The company has struggled for years following a scandal that began with the arrest of its former chairman Carlos Ghosn in late 2018 on charges of fraud and misuse of company assets, allegations that he denies. He eventually was released on bail and fled to Lebanon. Honda reported its profits slipped nearly 20% in the first half of the April-March fiscal year from a year earlier, as sales suffered in China. Toyota made 11.5 million vehicles in 2023, while Honda rolled out 4 million and Nissan produced 3.4 million. Mitsubishi Motors made just over 1 million. Even after a merger Toyota would remain the leading Japanese automaker. All the global automakers are facing potential shocks if President-elect Donald Trump follows through on threats to raise or impose tariffs on imports of foreign products, even from allies like Japan and neighboring countries like Canada and Mexico. Nissan is among the major car companies that have adjusted their supply chains to include vehicles assembled in Mexico. Meanwhile, analysts say there is an “affordability shift” taking place across the industry, led by people who feel they cannot afford to pay nearly $50,000 for a new vehicle. In American, a vital market for companies like Nissan, Honda and Toyota, that's forcing automakers to consider lower pricing, which will eat further into industry profits. AP Auto Writer Tom Krisher contributed to this report from Detroit. The decision by the opposition to showcase these personal photos has raised ethical questions about privacy and integrity in times of conflict. On one hand, some argue that by revealing these images, the opposition is attempting to humanize Assad, portraying him as a caring family man to undermine his image as a ruthless dictator. By highlighting his familial bonds and paternal instincts, the opposition may be aiming to weaken his support base and potentially tarnish his reputation on the international stage.

One key aspect of conflict prevention is the utilization of de-escalation mechanisms. These mechanisms are designed to mitigate tensions, prevent misunderstandings, and reduce the risk of military confrontation. However, in the current standoff between the US and Russia, these mechanisms have not been fully utilized, leaving the door open for potential miscalculations and dangerous escalations.

Meet RTE Dancing With The Stars’ Rhys McClenaghan – from family & career to international controversySouthern Miss secures 68-66 victory against MarshallMark Goldbridge is eager for Manchester United to sign Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Matheus Cunha, who gave the Red Devils a torrid time on Boxing Day. The Brazilian forward is enjoying a stellar season, which has seen him bag 10 goals and four assists in 19 games across competitions. Cunha, 25, opened the scoring at Molineux with a goal straight from a corner which left Andre Onana dumbfounded. He then set Hwang Hee-chan up at the death as Wolves beat United 2-0 to pile the pressure on their new head coach, Ruben Amorim . It was perhaps an audition for Cunha against a club desperate for more firepower and creativity in attack. Marcus Rashford looks increasingly likely to leave Old Trafford . At the same time, Bruno Fernandes was sent off against Wolves, and Alejandro Garnacho struggled to impress on the left of Amorim's three-man attack. Goldbridge Wants Matheus Cunha at Man United Goldbridge watched United stumble against Wolves and Cunha was the star of the show. Interestingly, the Portuguese coach was seen speaking to the Wolves forward after his side's loss to Vitor Perreria's men. Cunha's versatility could be a massive benefit for the Red Devils, who head into January sitting 14th in the Premier League table. They are anticipated to be active in next month's window with a left-back and a midfielder on their radar . Arsenal could be United's main competition for the ex-Atletico Madrid man. The 26-year-old has just over two years left on his contract, and Wolves may be under no pressure to sell, but he recently liked a social media post saying 'Manchester United soon'. However, speculation continues to grow over Rashford, who said he was 'ready for a new challenge' after Amorim dropped him for a 2-1 win against Manchester City in the Manchester Derby (December 15). He's been absent from the squad since his interview. Wolves reportedly have no plans to part ways with the 26-year-old next month.
