betfred manchester By Clarissa-Jan Lim President-elect Donald Trump has often marked national holidays by attacking his political rivals and airing his grievances against them on social media. This Thanksgiving, on the cusp of his return to the White House, Trump again criticized Democrats, accusing them of trying to “destroy” the country while touting his “landslide victory.” “Happy Thanksgiving to all, including to the Radical Left Lunatics who have worked so hard to destroy our Country, but who have miserably failed, and will always fail, because their ideas and policies are so hopelessly bad that the great people of our Nation just gave a landslide victory to those who want to MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social Thursday. “Don’t worry, our Country will soon be respected, productive, fair, and strong, and you will be, more than ever before, proud to be an American!” Vice President-elect JD Vance followed suit, posting a bizarre image on X of him and Trump serving the 2024 electoral map at a dinner table. Vance’s post, which has Trump’s head pasted on the body of the patriarch and Vance’s on the body of the housewife in Norman Rockwell’s painting “ Freedom F rom Want ,” was widely mocked on social media . Trump has claimed that his victory in the 2024 election was “ an unprecedented and powerful mandate .” And while it is true that unlike in 2016 and 2020, Trump won the popular vote this election, he did so by one of the smallest margins since the 19th century, as The New York Times noted. Still, he has brandished his claim of a “mandate ” as a justification to make controversial choices for his Cabinet , testing Senate Republicans’ appetite for challenging their party leader . HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Democratic Sen. Bob Casey of Pennsylvania conceded his reelection bid to Republican David McCormick on Thursday, as a statewide recount showed no signs of closing the gap and his campaign suffered repeated blows in court in its effort to get potentially favorable ballots counted. Casey’s concession comes more than two weeks after Election Day, as a grindingly slow ballot-counting process became a spectacle of hours-long election board meetings, social media outrage, lawsuits and accusations that some county officials were openly flouting the law. Republicans had been claiming that Democrats were trying to steal McCormick’s seat by counting “illegal votes.” Casey’s campaign had accused of Republicans of trying to block enough votes to prevent him from pulling ahead and winning. In a statement, Casey said he had just called McCormick to congratulate him. “As the first count of ballots is completed, Pennsylvanians can move forward with the knowledge that their voices were heard, whether their vote was the first to be counted or the last," Casey said. The Associated Press called the race for McCormick on Nov. 7, concluding that not enough ballots remained to be counted in areas Casey was winning for him to take the lead. As of Thursday, McCormick led by about 16,000 votes out of almost 7 million ballots counted. That was well within the 0.5% margin threshold to trigger an automatic statewide recount under Pennsylvania law. But no election official expected a recount to change more than a couple hundred votes or so, and Pennsylvania's highest court dealt him a blow when it refused entreaties to allow counties to count mail-in ballots that lacked a correct handwritten date on the return envelope. Republicans will have a 53-47 majority next year in the U.S. Senate. Follow Marc Levy at twitter.com/timelywriterDURHAM — At this time of year, the country is filled with football players hoping this weekend won’t be the last time they get to represent their high school or college in a meaningful game. Milford’s Gavin Urda is in that group. Urda is nearing the end of his senior season at the University of New Hampshire, which will wrap up its regular season with a game at Maine (5-6, 3-4 CAA) on Saturday at 1 p.m. UNH (7-4, 5-2) will likely need a victory to receive an at-large bid to the FCS playoffs. A loss could eliminate the Wildcats from contention. “Obviously you want to beat Maine any year,” Urda said. “It means more than any other game, but it means a little bit extra when you can extend not only the season, but my career. Just one more would be special.” Urda, a Milford High School graduate, is a defensive back — UNH moved him from cornerback to safety after last season — but he has also carved out a significant role on special teams. This season, he’s a part of UNH’s kickoff and kickoff return teams, as well as the punt and punt return teams. He recovered a fumble on a punt that led to a go-ahead touchdown during a must-win game against Monmouth on Nov. 9. During his time as a cornerback, Urda was also used in obvious passing situations as part of UNH’s nickel package. He joined the UNH program as a walk-on, but received scholarship money following the 2022 season. “I think ‘program guys’ are the perfect words to describe guys like Gavin,” UNH coach Rick Santos said. “They epitomize what New Hampshire football is all about: hard work, being blue collar, shows up every single day with a workmanlike attitude. Never makes it about himself. “When he stepped on campus, he was someone who cut his teeth on the scout team for the first couple years, so he was selfless and made everyone around him better and he wasn’t reaping the benefits of it. Kept his head down, kept working. ... This year pretty sure he’s top five in the nation in special teams tackles. Guys like that are why coaching is super fun. Not the superstar in terms of production on the field, but it’s everything else that goes into it that makes him such a great young man.” UNH, which is on a three-game winning streak, leads the series with Maine 58-45-8. The Black Bears are 3-1 at home this season. A victory will have UNH in good position to make the FCS playoffs. The 24-team field will be announced Sunday at 12:30 p.m. “The motivation is Maine,” Santos said. “You take care of them, you handle the emotions of this game, the rest of it all falls into place.” Win or lose Saturday, Urda said he’ll cherish the relationships he’s developed during his UNH career. “Sharing those experiences with lifelong friends,” he said. “It makes it fun to go to practice every day and do all that hard work when you’re doing it with your best friends. “I decided pretty late to play (college) football at all. I think I decided midway through my senior season, so that was a rushed decision. UNH and Saint Anselm were my last two before I decided to choose UNH. It’s one of the best decisions I’ve made. I love my time here.”

Pet passports for dogs, cats and ferrets to travel within UK ‘an outrage’NEW YORK (AP) — used his image as a successful New York businessman to become a celebrity, a reality television star and eventually the president. Now he will get to revel in one of the most visible symbols of success in the city when he rings the opening bell of the on Thursday as he's also named Time Magazine's Person of the Year. Trump is expected to be on Wall Street to mark the ceremonial start of the day's trading, according to four people with knowledge of his plans. He will also be announced Thursday as , according to a person familiar with the selection. The people who confirmed the stock exchange appearance and Time award were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity. It will be a notable moment of twin recognitions for Trump, who at times has treated the stock market as a measure of public approval and has long-prized signifiers of his success in New York's business world and his appearances on the covers of magazines — especially Time. Trump was named the magazine's Person of the Year in 2016, when he was first elected to the White House. He had already been listed as a finalist for this year's award alongside Vice President Kamala Harris, X owner Elon Musk, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Kate, the Princess of Wales. Time declined to confirm the selection ahead of Thursday morning's announcement. “Time does not comment on its annual choice for Person of the Year prior to publication,” a spokesperson for the magazine said Wednesday. The ringing of the bell is a powerful symbol of U.S. capitalism — and a good New York photo opportunity at that. Despite his decades as a New York businessman, Trump has never done it before. It was unclear whether Trump, a Republican, would meet with New York's embattled mayor, Democrat , who and has not ruled out changing his political party. Adams has been and accused of selling influence to foreign nationals; he has denied wrongdoing. Trump himself was once a symbol of New York, but he gave up living full-time in his namesake Trump Tower in Manhattan and moved to Florida after leaving the White House. CNN first reported Wednesday Trump’s visit to the stock exchange and Politico reported that Trump was expected to be unveiled as Time's Person of the Year. The stock exchange regularly invites celebrities and business leaders to participate in the ceremonial opening and closing of trading. During Trump’s first term, his wife, Melania Trump, rang the bell to promote her “Be Best” initiative on children’s well-being. Last year, Time CEO Jessica Sibley rang the opening bell to unveil the magazine's 2023 Person of the Year: . After the Nov. 5 election, the S&P 500 rallied 2.5% for its best day in nearly two years. The Dow Jones Industrial Average surged 1,508 points, or 3.6%, while the Nasdaq composite jumped 3%. All three indexes topped records they had set in recent weeks. The U.S. stock market has historically tended to rise the White House, with Democrats scoring bigger average gains since 1945. But Republican control could mean big shifts in the winning and losing industries underneath the surface, and investors are adding to bets built earlier on what the that Trump favors will mean. Trump has long courted the business community based on his own status as a wealthy real estate developer who gained additional fame as the star of the TV show “The Apprentice” in which competitors tried to impress him with their business skills. He won the election in part by about an economy that seemed unable to meet the needs of the middle class. The larger business community has applauded his promises to reduce corporate taxes and cut regulations. But there are also concerns about his stated plans to impose broad tariffs and possibly target companies that he sees as not aligning with his own political interests. Trump spends the bulk of his time at his Florida home but was in New York for weeks this spring during his hush money trial there. He was convicted, but his lawyers are pushing for the case to be thrown out in light of his election. While he spent hours in a Manhattan courthouse every day during his criminal trial, Trump took his presidential campaign to the streets of the heavily Democratic city, holding a rally in the Bronx and popping up at settings for working-class New Yorkers: a bodega, a construction site and a firehouse. Trump returned to the city in September to meet with Ukrainian President at his Manhattan tower and again in the final stretch of the presidential campaign when he held a rally at Madison Square Garden that drew immediate blowback as speakers made . At the stock exchange, the ringing of the bell has been a tradition since the 1800s. The first guest to do it was a 10-year-old boy named Leonard Ross, in 1956, who won a quiz show answering questions about the stock market. Many times, companies listing on the exchange would ring the bell at 9:30 a.m. to commemorate their initial offerings as trading began. But the appearances have become an important marker of culture and politics -- something that Trump hopes to seize as he’s promised historic levels of economic growth. The anti-apartheid advocate and South African President Nelson Mandela rang the bell, as has Hollywood star Sylvester Stallone with his castmates from the film “The Expendables.” So, too, have the actors Robert Downey Jr. and Jeremy Renner for an “Avengers” movie and the Olympians Michael Phelps and Natalie Coughlin. In 1985, Ronald Reagan became the first sitting U.S. president to ring the bell. “With tax reform and budget control, our economy will be free to expand to its full potential, driving the bears back into permanent hibernation,” Reagan said at the time. “We’re going to turn the bull loose.” The crowd of traders on the floor chanted, “Ronnie! Ronnie! Ronnie!” The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed in 1985 and 1986, but it suffered a decline in October 1987 in an event known as “Black Monday.” Long reported from Washington. South Korea’s president briefly declared martial law Tuesday, suspending civil rights, barricading parliament with troops, and putting media under government control. Lawmakers moved to quickly override it, and South Korea’s president said he would lift his declaration. Could such a constitutional crisis happen here in the United States? President-elect Donald Trump has shown some clear authoritarian tendencies . In his first term, he raised the idea of using martial law to stay in power after he lost reelection; he sent in the National Guard to disperse racial-justice protesters; and one of his last days in office, he refused for hours to call off his supporters as they attacked the Capitol.

As we all excitedly await the forthcoming 117th National Day, I had the good fortune to come across a heartwarming sight: a life-size standee beautifully adorned with the Royal Portrait and the lines of our National Anthem at the entrance hallway of Motithang Higher Secondary School’s academic building. The standee is flanked by the National flag and the school flag. I could not help but share this exemplary initiative by the school. I believe this mindful initiative will go a long way in preparing the children to be great nation builders. It continuously reminds both children and teachers of the Kingdom’s values and aspirations, fostering a brighter, stronger, and more prosperous future through the collective strength of the people’s love and loyalty to our Monarch. The National Anthem Druk Tshenden Koipi Gyelkhap Na Pel Lug Ni Tensi Chongwai Gyon Druk Gyelpo Ngadhag Rinpoche Ku Jurmay Tenching Chhap Sid Phel Chho Sangye Tenpa Darshing Gyel Bang Deikyed Nyima Shar War Sho. In the Kingdom of Druk, where cypresses grow, Refuge of the glorious monastic and civil traditions, The King of Druk, precious sovereign. His being is eternal, his reign prosperous, The enlightenment teachings thrive and flourish, May the people shine like the sun of peace and happiness! The national anthem profoundly reflects the nation’s identity, honoring the natural beauty of the land, the revered sovereign of the institution of the Monarchy and the spiritual heritage, while expressing aspirations for enduring peace and prosperity. Each poetic line is laden with meaning, reflecting the unique Bhutanese worldview that harmonizes tradition with modernity, and spirituality with governance. The national anthem serves as a powerful reminder of what it means to be Bhutanese, encapsulating the essence of the nation’s heart and soul. It deeply reflects the country’s unique blend of spiritual reverence and devotion to its sovereign, each line testifying to Bhutanese pride, culture, and the hopes for a prosperous future. Although I may never fully capture the profound significance of each letter and word of the national anthem, I would like to humbly attempt a line-by-line commentary. Druk Tshenden Koipi Gyelkhap Na In the Kingdom of Druk, where cypresses grow This opening line immediately evokes a vivid image of Bhutan’s natural beauty. The cypress tree, our National tree, often considered a symbol of longevity and resilience, represents the enduring nature of the Bhutanese kingdom. It sets the stage for understanding Bhutan as a land of timeless beauty and strength, where nature plays a crucial role in the national identity. Pel Lug Ni Tensi Chongwai Gyon Refuge of the glorious monastic and civil traditions Here, the anthem honors the dual role of His Majesty The King. His Majesty is not just a political leader but also a guardian of Bhutan’s rich spiritual heritage. This line underscores the unique governance model of Bhutan, where His Majesty The King is seen as a custodian of both spiritual and worldly matters, reflecting the country’s deep-rooted Buddhist traditions and the integration of spirituality in everyday life. Druk Gyelpo Ngadhag Rinpoche The King of Druk, precious sovereign This line emphasizes the reverence and loyalty that the Bhutanese people hold for His Majesty The King. Addressing His Majesty The King, the “precious sovereign” highlights the value placed on the monarchy as a stabilizing and unifying force. His Majesty The King is not just a ruler but a cherished symbol of the nation’s unity and identity. Ku Jurmay Tenching Chhap Sid Phel His being is eternal, his reign prosperous This line is a prayer for His Majesty The King’s enduring presence and the continued prosperity of Bhutan. It reflects a desire for stability and continuity, essential for the nation’s well-being. The wish for an “unchanging” leader symbolizes a hope for sustained guidance from His Majesty the King. Chho Sangye Tenpa Darshing Gyel The enlightenment teachings thrive and flourish Referring to the Buddha, the “enlightened one,” this line highlights the centrality of Buddhism in Bhutanese life. It is a call for the preservation and flourishing of Buddhist teachings, which are integral to the country’s cultural and spiritual fabric. This line signifies the importance of spiritual growth alongside material prosperity. Bang Deikyed Nyima Shar War Sho ! May the people shine like the sun of peace and happiness! The anthem concludes with a universal wish for peace and happiness. The metaphor of the sun shining over all people suggests a future where peace and well-being are pervasive. It encapsulates the Bhutanese aspiration for a harmonious society, aligning with the country’s philosophy of Gross National Happiness, which prioritizes the well-being of its citizens over mere economic growth. The following is an excerpt from my book, “ Hercules of Tongchudrak – Learnings to Unlearn and Relearn to Build a Great Nation ,” in which I propose some idea to use the National Anthem to reinforce our nation-building efforts. “...The “National Anthem” holds significant importance as a solemn song that embodies hope, devotion, and loyalty towards the national identity of a country. In the context of Bhutan, it represents our unity and commitment to the prosperity of the nation, guided by the wise leadership of our beloved Monarch. I firmly believe that the National Anthem should be viewed as a pledge to serve the Tsawa Sum. While many of us may have learned and sung the National Anthem during our school days, it is common to forget it over time due to a lack of formal occasions to sing it. Therefore, it is essential for those who have forgotten to relearn and be able to sing the anthem by heart. This would enable us to proudly and confidently sing along during formal occasions, including the National Day celebrations in Changlimithang, Thimphu. Even in situations where the National Anthem is played from a recording, it is important for those in attendance to actively participate by singing along, rather than simply letting the music play. I further propose that efforts should be made to encourage even those who are non-literate to learn the anthem by heart through various means. Making the National Anthem a mandatory part of the non-formal education curriculum would be a meaningful step towards ensuring that all individuals, irrespective of their educational background, are familiar with it. Additionally, I suggest that reciting the National Anthem by heart should be a prerequisite for job interviews and promotions. By fulfilling this requirement, individuals demonstrate their respect and dedication to our nation, reaffirming their commitment to the values and principles it upholds. In essence, the National Anthem should be cherished as our collective national song, and it is imperative that every citizen, using all their senses, learns and recites it by heart. Let us unite in our commitment to the Tsawa Sum and proudly sing our National Anthem on every occasion, reaffirming our love for our country and our unwavering loyalty to its progress and prosperity...” Palden Drukpa Gylo! TORONTO -- TORONTO (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump was joking when he suggested Canada become the 51st U.S. state during a dinner with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, a Canadian minister who attended their recent dinner said Tuesday. Fox News reported that Trump made the comment in response to Trudeau raising concerns that Trump's threatened tariffs on Canada would damage Canada's economy. Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc, who attended the Friday dinner at Trump's Mar-a-Lago club, said Trump's comments were in jest. “The president was telling jokes. The president was teasing us. It was, of course, on that issue, in no way a serious comment,” LeBlanc told reporters in Ottawa. LeBlanc described it as a three-hour social evening at the president’s residence in Florida on a long weekend of American Thanksgiving. “The conversation was going to be light-hearted,” he said. He called the relations warm and cordial and said the fact that “the president is able to joke like that for us” indicates good relations. On Tuesday, Trump appeared to continue with the joke, posting on his Truth Social platform an AI-generated image of himself standing on a mountain with a Canadian flag next to him with the caption “Oh Canada!" Some Canadians had fun with it. “If I were President Trump, I’d think twice before invading Canada. The last time the U.S. tried something like that— back in the War of 1812 —it didn’t exactly end well. Canada even burned down the White House,” former Quebec Premier Jean Charest joked on X. Earlier last week, the Republican president-elect threatened to impose a 25% tax on all products entering the U.S. from Canada and Mexico unless they stem the flow of migrants and drugs. Trudeau requested the meeting in a bid to avoid the tariffs by convincing Trump that the northern border is nothing like the U.S. southern border with Mexico . Trudeau held a rare meeting with opposition leaders on Tuesday about U.S-Canada relations and later said that opposition Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre shouldn’t amplify the erroneous narratives that Americans are saying about the border. “Less than one percent of migrants coming into the United States irregularly come from Canada and 0.2 percent of the fentanyl coming into the United States comes from Canada,” Trudeau said in Parliament. Canadian officials have said there are plans to put more helicopters, drones and law enforcement officers at the border. At the dinner, Kristen Hillman, Canada's ambassador to the U.S., said America’s trade deficit with Canada was also raised. Hillman said the U.S. had a $75 billion trade deficit with Canada last year but noted a third of what Canada sells into the U.S. is energy exports and prices have been high. “Trade balances are something that he focuses on so it’s important to engage in that conversation but to put it into context,” Hillman told The Associated Press. “We are one-tenth the size of the United States so a balanced trade deal would mean per capita we are buying 10 times more from the U.S. than they are buying from us. If that’s his metric we will certainly engage on that.” Hillman said Canada sold $170 billion worth of energy products last year to the U.S. About 60% of U.S. crude oil imports are from Canada, and 85% of U.S. electricity imports as well. Canada is also the largest foreign supplier of steel, aluminum and uranium to the U.S. and has 34 critical minerals and metals that the Pentagon is eager for and investing for national security. About 77% of Canada’s exports go to the U.S. Trudeau's government successfully employed a “Team Canada” approach during Trump’s first term in office when the free trade deal between Canada, the U.S. and Mexico was renegotiated. But Trudeau’s minority government is in a much weaker position politically now and faces an election within a year. Poilievre, Canada's opposition leader, said the tariffs would harm Americans. “The president-elect was elected on a promise to make America richer. These tariffs would make America poorer,” Poilievre said after meeting with Trudeau. Poilievre said the U.S. would be wise to do more free trade with its best friend and closest ally. Canada is the top export destination for 36 U.S. states. Nearly 3.6 billion Canadian dollars ($2.7 billion) worth of goods and services cross the border each day. Trudeau returned home after the dinner at Mar-a-Lago club in Florida without assurances Trump would back away from threatened tariffs on all products from the major American trading partner. Trump called the talks “productive” but signaled no retreat from a pledge that Canada says unfairly lumps it in with Mexico over the flow of drugs and migrants into the United States. The flows of migrants and seizures of drugs are vastly different.
