While the 49ers' 2024 NFL season is far from over, some outside the organization already have begun looking ahead to the team's offseason. Maybe for good reason, but with six weeks remaining in the regular season and San Francisco just one game out of first place in the NFC West, there still is , albeit a difficult one. However, The Volume's Colin Cowherd has seen enough and declared on the latest episode of "The Colin Cowherd Podcast" that the 49ers need a franchise reboot in the offseason after its on Sunday at Lambeau Field. “49ers need a reboot” & discuss the state of the 49ers after loss to Packers — The Volume (@TheVolumeSports) "San Francisco is like an old boxer. Last year, hanging on, had one last good fight," Cowherd told co-host John Middlekauff. "Stop drafting receivers, rebuild the O-lines and D-lines, [Nick] Bosa's hurt, [George] Kittle's hurt, [Christian] McCaffrey's hurt. I think San Francisco has to hyper-aggressively reboot the franchise." Cowherd's criticism of the 49ers' draft strategy and his belief that the organization needs to reinforce the trenches certainly is fair, but he did not specify what a "hyper-aggressive reboot" entails. Would that require the firings of coach Kyle Shanahan and/or president of football operations John Lynch? Or perhaps trading or cutting certain star players? It remains to be seen what the 49ers might do in the offseason, but with the playoffs still within reach and the return of key players possibly right around the corner, the topic of a franchise reboot, at least within the organization, likely is a discussion for a different day.
TORONTO (AP) — The Utah Hockey Club said players were forced to walk to their game against the Maple Leafs after their bus got stuck in Toronto traffic Sunday night. The team posted a video on social media of team members walking to Scotiabank Arena, with player Maveric Lamoureux saying the bus was “not moving at all.” Several city streets had been closed during the day for the annual Santa Claus parade. The Maple Leafs earned their fourth consecutive win by defeating Utah 3-2. The viral incident prompted Ontario Premier Doug Ford to call the congestion “embarrassing” and “unacceptable,” highlighting his government’s plan to address the city’s gridlock through bike lane legislation. It wasn’t the first time a Toronto visitor had to ditch their vehicle to make it to an event on time. In June, former One Direction band member Niall Horan had to walk through traffic to get to his concert at Scotiabank Arena. Tara Savage opened her own dental clinic , branching off from Bethel Family Dentistry. In the article describing her business, written by Rose Lincoln, it was reported that, “For the past six years Savage has worked for Bethel Family Dentistry (BFD), currently Bethel’s only dentistry office. She will stay on part time until a replacement is found, working at her new office on Wednesdays (when BFD is closed), Thursdays and Fridays.” Dental Hygienist Tara Savage of Bethel will hold an open house on August 1 at her new business Polished Dental on Mayville Road. Rose Lincoln/Bethel Citizen October — The approach of fall saw a focus on the natural world for locals looking to spend some more time outdoors. Valentine Farm held a successful outdoor event with talks, workshops, and food made from wild ingredients. The event was well attended by locals, and went hand in hand with a talk at the Gem theater about the process of growing apples. With apple season at its height, Sparrowhawk Orchard detailed their plans for moving forwards in the year ahead, developing an “all around agricultural experience” for both locals and visitors looking for a chance to have some fresh picked apples and homemade cider. However, not all of the connections with nature were entirely positive, as the Bethel town hall discovered mold in the basement. This mold ended up forcing the Bethel Town Hall to relocate to the Fire Department, which has remained in effect throughout December . November — Election season may have dominated the national news, but in Bethel the local news were focused more on contributions made by the younger members of the community. In town, on the younger side, Telstar students worked to aid seniors in the community in their day of service- a biannual service day held in conjunction with the Age-Friendly Community Initiative ( AFCI ) On another note, the community rallied together after an election-day tragedy. Jade Gianforte and Matt Thurston, who had rescued a couple from the river at the start of the year, had their home burned down in an active shooting. The community, however, came together to support them and help them with donations during this time. Bethel Historical Society held an open house at the Mason House on Dec. 7, with warm cider and cookies inside a decorated Mason House. Visitors could also enjoy live fiddle music, while seeing the inside of the historic house decorated for Christmas. Chaia Alford/The Bethel Citizen December — During the festive season, Bethel begins to gear up toward Christmas with a window decorating contest hosted by the Chamber of Commerce. The discussion of speech at Telstar took on a new angle as debates arose about what to do with cell phones at school. The school board held an open discussion about their new cell phone policy, which was met with displeasure by school board member Scott Cole, who did not agree with the new policy and called it “a concession to technology.” Nevertheless, with some revisions, the new policy was passed at a school board meeting . DETROIT (AP) — Starting in September of 2027, all new passenger vehicles in the U.S. will have to sound a warning if rear-seat passengers don't buckle up. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Monday that it finalized the rule, which also requires enhanced warnings when front seat belts aren't fastened. The agency estimates that the new rule will save 50 lives per year and prevent 500 injuries when fully in effect, according to a statement. The new rule will apply to passenger cars, trucks, buses except for school buses, and multipurpose vehicles weighing up to 10,000 pounds. Before the rule, seat belt warnings were required only for the driver's seat. Under the new rule, outboard front-seat passengers also must get a warning if they don't fasten their belts. Front-center seats will not get a warning because NHTSA found that it wouldn't be cost effective. The agency said most vehicles already have warnings for the outboard passenger seats. The rule also lengthens the duration of audio and visual warnings for the driver's seat. The front-seat rules are effective starting Sept. 1 of 2026. Rear passengers consistently use seat belts at a lower rate than front passengers, the agency says. In 2022, front belt use was just under 92%, while rear use dropped to about 82%. About half of automobile passengers who died in crashes two years ago weren’t wearing belts, according to NHTSA data. The seat belt rule is the second significant regulation to come from NHTSA in the past two months. In November the agency bolstered its five-star auto safety ratings to include driver assistance technologies and pedestrian protection. Safety advocates want the Department of Transportation, which includes NHTSA, to finish several more rules before the end of the Biden administration, because President-elect Donald Trump has said he’s against new government regulations. Cathy Chase, president of Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety, urged the department to approve automatic emergency braking for heavy trucks and technology to prevent impaired driving.

Grantham has been defensive coordinator for the Cleveland Browns in the NFL and for Georgia, Louisville, Mississippi State and Florida at the college level. “He made the decision he wanted to get back into the college game," Rizzi said. “He’s obviously been a coordinator before at a couple of really good college programs. (Oklahoma State coach) Mike Gundy’s getting a great coach, and congratulations to Todd.” An Oklahoma State spokesperson would not comment on the situation. Grantham started this season as a defensive line coach for the Saints. After Rizzi took over following the firing of Dennis Allen, who’d previously overseen the defense, Grantham was moved into the role of senior defensive advisor so he could assist coordinator Joe Woods with the defensive game plan. “He’s done a heck of a job here behind scenes here with the defensive staff,” Rizzi said. “But it’s certainly a great opportunity for him.” Grantham will replace Bryan Nardo and take over a unit that gave up a Big 12-worst 500.6 yards per contest during a 3-9 season. Google and the US government faced off in a federal court on Monday, as each side delivered closing arguments in a case revolving around the technology giant's alleged unfair domination of online advertising. The trial in a Virginia federal court is Google's second US antitrust case now under way as the US government tries to rein in the power of big tech. In a separate trial, a Washington judge ruled that Google's search business is an illegal monopoly, and the US Justice Department is asking that Google sell its Chrome browser business to resolve the case. The latest case, also brought by the Justice Department, focuses on ad technology for the open web -- the complex system determining which online ads people see when they surf the internet. The vast majority of websites use a trio of Google ad software products that together, leave no way for publishers to escape Google's advertising technology, the plaintiffs allege. Publishers -- including News Corp and Gannett publishing -- complain that they are locked into Google's advertising technology in order to run ads on their websites. "Google is once, twice, three times a monopolist," DOJ lawyer Aaron Teitelbaum told the court in closing arguments. Presiding judge Leonie Brinkema has said that she would deliver her opinion swiftly, as early as next month. Whatever Brinkema's judgment, the outcome will almost certainly be appealed, prolonging a process that could go all the way to the US Supreme Court. - 'Winners and losers' - The government alleges that Google controls the auction-style system that advertisers use to purchase advertising space online. The US lawyers argue that this approach allows Google to charge higher prices to advertisers while sending less revenue to publishers such as news websites, many of which are struggling to stay in business. The US argues that Google used its financial power to acquire potential rivals and corner the ad tech market, leaving advertisers and publishers with no choice but to use its technology. The government wants Google to divest parts of its ad tech business. Google dismissed the allegations as an attempt by the government to pick "winners and losers" in a diverse market. The company argues that the display ads at issue are just a small share of today's ad tech business. - TikTok not question - Google says the plaintiffs' definition of the market ignores ads that are also placed in search results, apps and social media platforms and where, taken as a whole, Google does not dominate. "The law simply does not support what the plaintiffs are arguing in this case," said Google's lawyer Karen Dunn. She warned that if Google were to lose the case, the winners would be rival tech giants such as Microsoft, Meta or Amazon, whose market share in online advertising is ascendant as Google's share is falling. The DOJ countered that it simply "does not matter" that Google is competing in the broader market for online ads. "That is a different question" than the market for ads on websites that is the target of the case, said Teitelbaum. Google also points to US legal precedent, saying arguments similar to the government's have been refuted in previous antitrust cases. Dunn also warned that forcing Google to work with rivals in its ad products would amount to government central planning that the court should reject. If the judge finds Google to be at fault, a new phase of the trial would decide how the company should comply with that conclusion. And all that could be moot if the incoming Trump administration decides to drop the case. The president-elect has been a critic of Google's, but he warned earlier this month that breaking it up could be "a very dangerous thing." arp/dw

Hello, Reader. 40% off select models. Up to 70% off clearance. Limit one coupon code per customer. We’ve been bombarded with Black Friday deals for weeks now. What used to be a one-day-only, in-store event has turned into a month-long celebration of “the best deals of the year.” So, in the spirit of the week, I’d like to share a relatively cheap and underappreciated AI play that I’ve been watching throughout 2024. Let’s take a look... If we were to play a word-association game and I said, “Artificial intelligence,” you might respond with something like “Nvidia,” or “Google,” or maybe “robots.” You probably would not say “Corning.” But as it turns out, this iconic glassmaker could benefit significantly from the AI boom, as a classic “pick and shovel” play. For more than 170 years, the Corning Inc. ( GLW ) name has been synonymous with best-of-breed glass products. It has continuously innovated and set the industry standard for excellence. Now, the path from AI to Corning is fairly direct and intuitive. AI technologies require enormous processing power from data centers. Because this new source of demand is surging, the companies that operate these “hyperscale” data centers are ramping up their capacity by building new centers and/or boosting the capacity and speed of existing centers. That means surging demand for the optical fiber and components that Corning produces. Importantly, the growing AI workloads not only require more data centers, but also more fiber optic connections per data center. According to Corning CEO Wendell Weeks, modern data center systems that rely on Nvidia Corp. ’s ( NVDA ) popular Hopper H100 GPUs require 10 times more fiber optics than a conventional data center server rack. As Weeks explained on CNBC, “We’ve invented new fibers, new cables, new connectors, and new custom integrated optical solutions to dramatically reduce installation costs, overall time and space, and carbon footprint.” Therefore, it is easy to see how more data center processing power means “more Corning.” On average, Corning estimates that data centers running AI large language models (LLMs) will require five times more optical connectivity than they have today. In 2024 alone, these hyperscalers – like Alphabet Inc. ( GOOGL ) , Amazon.com Inc. ( AMZN ) , and Meta Platforms Inc. ( META ) – invested about $200 billion in data centers, hardware, and other technologies required to deploy generative AI models. This massive investment caps a multiyear construction wave that has doubled the total capacity of hyperscale data centers during the last several years, according to Synergy Research Group. Synergy predicts capacity will double again during the next few years, as 120 to 130 new hyperscale centers come online each year. This building boom is finally showing up on Corning’s order books, with the company citing “strong adoption of our new optical connectivity products for Generative AI.” Coincident with the data center boom, Corning is seeing trend improvements in its other major end markets, like smartphones. As a result, Weeks believes a $3 billion to $5 billion revenue surge will land on Corning’s income statement over the next two years. If these expected sales arrive in a timely manner, Corning could earn as much as $3 per share within one year, and $3.50 within two years. At that level of profitability, Corning shares will be trading for 15 times 2026 earnings and just 13 times the 2027 result. Obviously, this hoped-for revenue surge is not yet in the door. But the trajectory is very promising. If/as/when this revenue does materialize, Corning shares could easily double from the current quote. So, as tech darlings like Nvidia and Amazon continue to prosper, I would favor the unloved Corning for the next phase of the AI boom. SAN JOSE, Calif. — A bid by the co-captain of San Jose State University’s women’s volleyball team to get a purportedly transgender teammate banned from the Mountain West Conference Championship has failed. Co-captain Brooke Slusser and her co-plaintiffs waited too long to seek an emergency court order barring the player from the tournament, which starts Wednesday, Colorado federal court judge S. Kato Crews ruled Monday. Slusser — along with former Spartan volleyball players Alyssa Sugai and Elle Patterson, San Jose State associate head coach Melissa Batie-Smoose, and eight players from four schools that have forfeited games against the Spartans over the player’s presence on the team — asked the court Nov. 15 for an emergency injunction. They had requested a court order banning the player from future games, including the championship, and that the conference’s policy allowing transgender players be rescinded. They also wanted Spartan wins that occurred via forfeit canceled, plus a recalculation of conference standings based on those requested changes. Crews said an emergency injunction “is an extraordinary remedy,” and should only be granted if clearly shown to be necessary to prevent an irreparable harm, and that if it were considered in a trial, would have a “substantial likelihood of success.” Teams started forfeiting against San Jose State in late September, the judge noted. The “delay” by Slusser and the others in filing the lawsuit and seeking the emergency order related to the tournament “weakens their arguments regarding irreparable harm,” Crews wrote. The player’s purported transgender status was revealed via news coverage this spring, and the plaintiffs “certainly had knowledge of this alleged player when the string of member institutions started forfeiting matches” in September, the judge added. The lawyer for Slusser and her co-plaintiffs filed an appeal of the order Monday shortly after it was released. The filing did not detail the grounds for appeal. This news organization is not naming the player, as they have not confirmed their status. Crews noted that no defendants in the lawsuit dispute that a transgender woman is on the Spartan team. Slusser and the others sued San Jose State officials , the conference and other defendants in Colorado federal court Nov. 13. For courts, temporary injunctions like those sought in this case are intended to “preserve the status quo” until a trial can provide a legal resolution, Crews said. Under accepted court precedent, that status quo should be “the last peaceable uncontested status existing between the parties before the dispute developed,” Crews wrote. That peaceable status, according to the judge, had existed after the conference’s transgender policy was ratified in 2022 and after the player began competing for the Spartans that year, the judge wrote. With regard to the policy, that status lasted until Slusser and the others filed their lawsuit, the judge wrote. With regard to the player, it was not until this past spring, at the earliest, that questions arose around their gender identity, Crews wrote. Granting the injunction would have altered the status quo because the player has been on the Spartan roster since 2022, and throughout the 2024 season, and the conference’s Transgender Participation Policy has been in effect since August 2022, the judge said. The request for an emergency injunction claimed federal Title IX education law prohibiting sex-based discrimination “protects women, not men who identify as women.” However, Crews wrote, court precedent, including from the U.S. Supreme Court, suggests Slusser and her co-plaintiffs “have failed to show a likelihood of success on the merits of these claims.” Crews also said that the requested injunction would have led to an “eleventh-hour shake-up” for the championship tournament. The Spartan team over the weekend secured the No. 2 seed spot in the six-team tournament, with a bye in the first round . Then they are scheduled to face the winner of a match between Utah State and Boise State — two of the five teams that have forfeited against San Jose State. Slusser earlier joined a similar lawsuit, in Georgia federal court, against the National Collegiate Athletic Association over its rules allowing certain transgender women to play women’s sports. ©2024 MediaNews Group, Inc. Check the bombshell claims Not only Blake Lively, other crew members too fell prey to Justin Baldoni's misconduct and had also spoken up. Lively's lawsuit isn't the only one going on against Baldoni, as an ex-publicist is also suing Baldoni and his PR team for putting the blame of "scheming to 'bury' and 'destroy'" Lively on her. About this recent lawsuit, Cammarata said: “I think that only works to Ms. Lively’s benefit. Now you got the wrongdoers all fighting among themselves." "It really doesn’t bode well for that group, meaning Mr Baldoni, his studio, his PR people," he continued. "It's just not a good day for them." Justin Baldoni had also hired a crisis management team to "orchestrate" a "smear campaign" against Blake Lively, claims the complaint. Blake Lively's complaint against Justin Baldoni got several Hollywood big wigs rallying behind the actress. While Justin Baldoni is facing the consequent wrath of the disturbing allegations, support has poured from all quarters for Blake Lively. Justin has already met with the incendiary aftermath as his Voices of Solidarity Award from Vital Voices, a title for being an “ally to women,” has been rescinded. Despite the actor’s attorney, Bryan Freedman, firing back at the heavy accusations, he’s been dropped by the talent agency WME. Moreover, Baldoni’s podcast co-hosts and non-profits have also shunned him. With things looking increasingly bad for the man who was once heavily portrayed as a feminist ally off-camera, Stephanie Jones, the founder of Justin’s former PR company, has hit him with his first formal lawsuit. In response, Baldoni's representative, Bryan Freedman, branded the suit as "shameful," framing it as a desperate move on Lively's part to salvage her reputation. This shocking lawsuit comes amid ongoing rumors about tension between Lively and Baldoni during the production of Colleen Hoover's bestseller; a story depicting the romance between Lily Bloom (Lively) and Ryle Kincaid (Baldoni).
