Russia warns of Washington's 'extremely hostile' nuclear stance before second Trump termExperts said the dialogue between Chinese President Xi Jinping and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on the sidelines of the G20 Leaders’ Summit on Monday underscores the vast potential for more China-United Kingdom collaboration. This was the first face-to-face meeting since Starmer took office as prime minister in July. In recent months, China and the UK have seen good momentum in exchanges at various levels, as senior officials from the two countries, including ministers, have held talks covering areas such as foreign policy, the economy, finance, and energy. Observers said the meeting in Rio de Janeiro signals a promising trajectory, where those taking part in China-UK exchanges expect these discussions to translate into concrete actions, fostering sustainable growth and technological advancement for both nations. Jack Perry Junior, chairman of the 48 Group and CEO of London Export Corporation, said both nations, recognized for their technological innovation and forward-thinking strategies, have a unique opportunity to drive high-quality development initiatives. “Historically, partnerships in sectors like finance and education have yielded mutual benefits. This renewed engagement can pave the way for deeper cooperation in emerging fields such as green energy and digital innovation,” he said. “President Xi’s emphasis on high-standard opening-up and extending zero-tariff treatment to least developed countries aligns with the UK’s commitment to free trade and economic inclusivity,” Perry said, adding the UK’s move not to impose tariffs on the Chinese EV industry and not follow the EU approach shows that “the UK is doing what is best for its people and businesses”. Perry said there will be broad cooperation space where the UK could participate in China’s eight actions to support global development, including pursuing high-quality Belt and Road cooperation. “The Belt and Road Initiative is evolving into a more mature and sustainable framework, with its emphasis on a green and digital Silk Road. This signals China’s understanding of global economic shifts and its desire to move from quantity to quality. For the UK side, this represents an opportunity to integrate our world-class financial expertise and green technology solutions into this ambitious network. Projects like these could set benchmarks for multilateral cooperation and elevate global infrastructure standards,” he added. H-J Colston-Inge, the co-founder of the Chopsticks Club, a British network for China-related professionals, and a director of the educational charity Engage with China, said she is encouraged that the two leaders have created a space to meet. “In my opinion, China and Britain — and the West more broadly — need engagement not only for the common good, but also for cultural enrichment, the development of knowledge and to encourage vital collaboration on climate change.... I hope that these high-level summit talks will be more than a backdoor to shifting the geopolitical climate but an open door to a new chapter of more positive bilateral relations,” she said. Engage with China works in UK schools to build a greater understanding of China among young people to enable school children to immerse themselves in Chinese culture. Increasing trade and boosting communications are “in all of our interests and may just help to stimulate thinking around what economic growth of the future might look like in a world with finite resources”, she said. In an interview with CGTN Europe aired on Tuesday, Kerry Brown, professor of Chinese Studies and director of the Lau China Institute at King’s College, London, said he thinks the current British government is clear-sighted, and puts the economy as its priority. “It knows its priority is trying to do something about Britain’s productivity issues. As the world’s second-biggest economy, China must play a role in that. Either we say, yes, we want China to play a role or we say, no, we’ll be able to deal with our economic problems ourselves,” he said. “Either way, you have to make a decision, and this government has made a pragmatic decision. ... I think it’s the only decision really that makes sense. And I hope that it is able to develop a rational, consistent approach to China that balances problems with opportunities.” Source: China Daily

The South Carolina women's basketball team has been defeated for the first time since March 31, 2023. The No. 1 Gamecocks fell Sunday in Los Angeles as Lauren Betts posted a double-double effort to lead No. 5 UCLA to a 77-62 triumph. The Gamecocks (5-1) suffered their first defeat after 43 consecutive victories, dating back to the loss to Iowa 77-73 in the NCAA Tournament semifinals. South Carolina defeated Iowa last season for the national championship. Betts finished with 11 points, a game-high 14 rebounds, four assists and four blocks to power the Bruins (5-0) to a historic victory. UCLA also got 15 points from Londynn Jones on 5-of-5 shooting from 3-point range, 13 points from Elina Aarnisalo and 11 each from Kiki Rice and Gabriela Jacquez. It's the first time UCLA has beaten South Carolina since 1981. The Bruins lost twice to the Gamecocks in the 2022-23 season, including in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. Te-Hina Paopao had 18 points for South Carolina on 4-of-4 3-point shooting, while Tessa Johnson had 14 points. UCLA won the rebounding battle 41-34, marking the second time this season the Gamecocks have been outrebounded. South Carolina also got outscored in the paint 26-18. It's rare that a Dawn Staley-coached team -- units that typically revolve around dominant centers from A'ja Wilson to Aaliyah Boston to Kamilla Cardoso -- gets beat in the paint and on the glass, but with 6-foot-7 Betts, UCLA had the recipe to outmuscle the Gamecocks in those areas of the game. South Carolina never led after UCLA began the game with an 18-5 run, capped off by back-to-back 3-pointers from Jones. The Gamecocks cut the deficit to nine points in the second quarter, but the Bruins responded with a 17-5 run and entered halftime ahead by 21 points. Aarnisalo scored seven points during that run. From there, the Gamecocks never got within single digits of the lead in the second half. It's the first time in 21 tries that UCLA has beaten an AP-ranked No. 1 team. And it's the first time South Carolina lost a true road game since 2021, a streak of 33 games. The schedule doesn't get any easier for South Carolina. While UCLA faces UT Martin next on Friday, the Gamecocks play No. 8 Iowa State on Thursday. --Field Level MediaAbia: Gov Otti signs N750bn budget for 2025

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — After three straight losses, including back-to-back blowouts , the San Francisco 49ers needed a get-right game. The Chicago Bears helped provide just that. Brock Purdy carved up Chicago's defense to lead San Francisco to its best offensive output of the season and the defense dominated the Bears in a 38-13 win Sunday that looked a lot more like the team that went to the Super Bowl last season than the one that has struggled in 2024. “I think just the biggest thing was just getting some energy and momentum,” Purdy said. “This league is hard. It’s tough. If you don’t have momentum or energy and belief within a building, it can be really tough.” The problem for San Francisco (6-7) is it might be too late to salvage its playoff hopes. Three blown fourth-quarter leads to division rivals and the lopsided losses at Green Bay and Buffalo the previous two weeks leave the Niners two games out of the playoffs with only four games to go. They might need to win out to get back to the postseason for a fourth straight season, and even then they could need some help because their three division losses will make it tough to win any tiebreakers in the tightly packed NFC West. “If we win every single game, I think we’ve put ourselves in a very good position to either win the division or somehow sneak our way into playoff contention,” tight end George Kittle said. “I thought everyone’s focused on this one week. ... Forget the whole season whether you’ve played like crap the entire season, whether you’ve had missed opportunities, or whether you have a bunch of touchdowns. Whatever it is, flush all that and just focus on this one game.” Big plays. The Niners repeatedly gashed the Bears for big plays as the passing game looked as good as it has all season. Purdy had eight completions go for at least 20 yards — tied for the most in any game for the 49ers since at least 1991 — with Kittle catching four of them, Isaac Guerendo two and one each for Deebo Samuel and Jauan Jennings. Kickoffs. Jake Moody attempted two line-drive kicks as San Francisco tried to pin Chicago deep instead of allowing a touchback. But both kicks landed shy of the landing zone at the 20, giving the Bears the ball at the 40. DL Yetur Gross-Matos. The Niners have been struggling to generate a pass rush with Nick Bosa sidelined, but Gross-Matos made a big impact on Sunday. He had a career-high three sacks in the game after coming into the game with just one this season. S Ji'Ayir Brown. The second-year safety lost his starting job with the return of Talanoa Hufanga from a wrist injury. Brown played 15 defensive snaps in a spot role and was beat on a TD pass to Rome Odunze in his limited action. Guerendo has a sprained foot and will be evaluated later this week to see if he can play. ... OL Ben Bartch will likely go on IR after suffering a high ankle sprain Sunday. ... LB Dre Greenlaw could return this week for the first time since tearing his Achilles tendon in the Super Bowl. ... DL Nick Bosa (hip, oblique) and LT Trent Williams (ankle) will be evaluated this week but there is no timeline on when they will return. ... LG Aaron Banks cleared the concussion protocol and should play this week. ... LB Dee Winters (ankle), S Malik Mustapha (chest, shoulder) and LB Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles are day-to-day. 305 — The 49ers outgained the Bears by 305 yards in the first half for the ninth best advantage in a first half since at least 1991. The 319 yards for San Francisco were the most by any team in a first half this season and the 4 yards allowed were the fewest. The 49ers host the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday night. LONDON (AP) — Arsenal moved up to second place in the Premier League with a 1-0 home win against Ipswich on Friday. Mikel Arteta’s side is six points behind leader Liverpool, which has a game in hand. Second-bottom Ipswich had won two of its last three away games but was up against it from the start at the Emirates. The visitors did not have one touch in the Gunners’ box during the first 45 minutes and, although Ipswich showed signs of life after the break, it was Arsenal which continued to dominate the game, marshaled by Declan Rice in midfield. Kai Havertz got the only goal midway through the first half when he knocked in a cross from Leandro Trossard. Havertz, Rice, Mikel Merino, Martin Odegaard and Gabriel Jesus all had chances but none of them could add to Arsenal’s tally. “It’s so tough, every team is tough to break down,” Havertz said. “They fight for each other and at the end we’re very proud for the win.” Arsenal is a point above third-place Chelsea and two points clear of season surprise team Nottingham Forest in fourth. Seagulls and Bees share the points on south coast Brighton had most of the chances but could not find the net in a 0-0 draw with Brentford that extended the south coast club’s winless run to six league games. It was a frustrating night for the home side and especially Julio Enciso. The Paraguay striker had a host of opportunities to score but couldn’t make them count. Along with Southampton, Brentford has the worst away record in the league with seven losses and two draws and it was easy to see why in this toothless performance. Brentford had an early goal from Yoane Wissa ruled out for offside and, although it came a bit more into the game in the second half, it failed to pressure Icelandic goalkeeper Hakon Valdimarsson, who made his Premier League debut eight minutes before halftime when Mark Flekken went off with a thigh injury. One bright spot for the home side was the return of winger Solly March. He came on as a late substitute to make his first appearance for Brighton since injuring a knee against Manchester City 14 months ago. The result leaves Brighton in 10th place with 26 points, one spot and two points ahead of the Bees. ___ AP soccer: https://apnews.com/hub/soccerIt’s time to put AI to work for the employeeJoan Benoit Samuelson’s Olympic marathon win was a game-changer for women’s sports
