Strictly Come Dancing fans says they were 'screaming' as there was an unusual move in honour of an audience member during the latest live show. Each week, eagle-eyed viewers are usually pointing out the famous faces sitting on the sidelines in the ballroom as the competing couples taking to the dance floor live. But on Saturday night (Dcember 7) as the semi-final of the BBC One dance contest took place, it was judge Craig Revel Horwood who pointed out one of the celebrities sitting in the live studio audience after JB Gill and Lauren Oakley performed their second of two performances on the night. As the performance came to an end and they made their way over to Tess Daly to receive their comments, Craig told JB: "Darling, you need to come over here. Come on. Come to daddy!" As JB walked over, he added: "Paul Hollywood is in, darling!" before extending out his hand for a handshake. Lowering your bills might be easier than you think. With a phone call and a little preparation, you may be able to save money on internet, phone, cable or utility bills — and maybe others. Talking to your service providers could, for example, get you a lower rate or promotional discount, or point you toward a financial assistance program. Use these expert tips to negotiate better deals with customer service representatives. The outcome of the conversation can largely depend on when you pick up the phone. Choose a moment when you have time — and patience — to spare, so you can focus fully on the call. People should avoid calling when “they’re going to be rushed, or they’re cranky, or they’ve got a kid screaming in the background, or it’s 4 on a Friday and they’ve had a bad week,” says Teresa Murray, director of the consumer watchdog office of the U.S. Public Interest Research Group. You may have better luck calling customer support at certain times of the year, too. Kenan Acikelli, who spent three years working as a customer service representative for a telecommunications company, said it was often easier for customers to negotiate bills at the end of the year or during periods such as Black Friday and back-to-school sales. “The company would run special offers during these times, and we were given more flexibility to match promotional pricing or offer upgrades to retain customers,” he said in an email interview. When you dial a company’s support number — which you can typically find on its website or your billing statement — you’ll probably be routed through an automated system first. Speaking with a live person will give you a better chance to explain your situation and discuss possible solutions. Try pressing “0” or saying “representative” to reach a real person faster. Murray recommends gethuman.com to locate companies’ customer support phone numbers and other information that can help you connect with a live representative, such as service hours and instructions for navigating the phone menu. People we talked to said that politeness is your best bargaining chip in negotiations. Customer service agents will probably be more sympathetic if you speak kindly and respectfully versus using a harsh or demanding tone. “I’ve seen people come in frustrated, but those who stayed calm always ended up with better results,” Acikelli said. “I would often go out of my way to offer them additional promotions or discounts simply because they asked kindly.” Keep your attitude in check, and remember that the person on the other end of the line is a human who’s just trying to do their job. Ahead of the call, learn what prices and deals your service providers’ competitors offer, and leverage that information, said Babu Jayaram, head of customer success and strategy at Qualaroo, a customer and user feedback software company. “It shows that you’re an informed customer, and reps often have some discretion to match or even beat those rates to keep you on board,” he said in a prepared statement. Find out whether your provider has any deals that it may be willing to extend to you. Is your cable company offering an incentive to new customers that’s cheaper than what you’re paying? Maybe you can secure that rate. A quick internet search — try something like “company name + discount” or “company name + new promotion” — may help you uncover the information you need to back up your request. Murray recommends looking into other types of discounts, too. Some companies offer age-based discounts, often starting at age 55. Paperless billing and autopay discounts are also common. Murray says she saves $5 per line each month on her five-line cell phone plan by using automatic bank payments. “That’s 25 bucks a month. So that adds up,” she says. Discounts are harder to come by for utility bills such as water and electricity, which are typically regulated and must adhere to certain rates. However, financial assistance programs may be available to people who meet certain income requirements or are struggling to manage their bills. Ask your customer service representative about any discounts, payment plans or hardship programs you might qualify for. Here’s exactly what to say on that call . Having your account details ready can save time and reduce friction on the call. Log in to your online account or check your statements for information, such as account number, plan features and past payment dates. If you’ve been a customer for a long time, consider using that information to your advantage, especially if you have a record of on-time payments . Companies value loyalty, and employees may have customer retention goals they’re trying to meet. Keeping you as a satisfied customer is in the company’s best interest. Don’t take the first “no” for an answer. Explain your situation again, and get straight to the point. For example: “I’d like to continue using your service, but I simply can’t afford to pay the price. What can we do to bring the bill down?” If you still get nowhere, try escalating the request. The representative you’re speaking with might not have the authority to lower your bill . Kindly ask to speak to a supervisor, who may have more problem-solving experience and power to make decisions. Despite our best efforts, customer service calls can lead to dead ends. Prepare for the possibility that your provider won’t budge. Ahead of the call, consider whether terminating the service is a step you’re willing to take. With some services, such as water, electricity or gas, alternative providers might not be available, but with others, such as cell phone or cable providers, competition is abundant. If ending the relationship is an option, and your representative can’t save you money, ask to begin the cancellation process. Showing that you’re serious may prompt them to make you a better offer. If that offer never comes, consider switching to a lower-priced competitor or, if the service isn’t vital, giving it up entirely. The boss watched another horror show as his rock-bottom team were dumped 4-1 at Dundee. The club legend has only led his team to one league win this season but he is adamant he can turn things around and will continue to try and do so until he is told differently. Hibs play Aberdeen on Tuesday and it remains to be seen if he will still be in the Easter Road hot seat. He stated: “I one hundred percent want to be here. “That's a decision for the powers that be at the football club. Until someone tells me otherwise, I'll do everything I possibly can to turn this around. I know the players are still with me, one hundred per cent. I know they've still got that desire to try and turn this around.” Gray is adamant that Hibs’ issues are not down to a lack of effort but costly mistakes. That was shown as they collapsed after going 1-0 up and then Jordan Obita got sent off and they gifted too many goals.It was their fourth ordering off in six games. Gray stated: “I have no complaints (about the red card). There was no malice in it, you see it regularly in football where someone takes a bad touch and then you lunge into a tackle. But you can’t do that. “The red card was a big turning point in the game. They're giving absolutely everything. They're hurting in there at the moment because of the effort they're putting in. But it's just too many individual errors and at key times it’s costing us. “So until anybody tells me otherwise, I'm going to do everything I can to turn this around. We know the areas we’re letting ourselves down in. I can't sit here and defend it because I've said it too many times now, so I understand that as well.” Gray went to the fans at the end and they are the ones he feels for. “The reason I applauded the fans is because of the effort they’ve made,” he confirmed. “I understand the frustration from the supporters. I understand the frustration and the pain. The appreciation that they show towards the team during difficult periods. “We had 1,500 of them or so, making the effort to come up here tonight, which is incredible when you consider the weather conditions in Edinburgh and around the country today. The effort that was made to come and support the team, which has been here forever since I've been at the football club. “The fans always have stuck by us. McLaren recalls 765LT supercar over rear windows flying offBillionaire Elon Musk poured more than $20 million into a mysterious super PAC at the end of the 2024 campaign, part of more than $250 million he spent overall to boost President-elect Donald Trump, new campaign finance reports show. Musk financed RBG PAC, according to the group's report filed Thursday night with the Federal Election Commission. The super PAC, which did not disclose its donors before the election, launched ads contending that Trump did not support a federal abortion ban. All of the money the group pulled in — $20.5 million — came from a single donation from the “Elon Musk Revocable Trust” located in Austin, Texas. RBG PAC spent almost all of its funds on digital ads, mailers and text messages, according to the campaign finance report, which covered Oct. 17 through Nov. 25. The group's website states that Trump and the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg agree on the abortion issue, drawing criticism from Ginsburg's granddaughter Clara Spara, who told the New York Times that the message was "nothing short of appalling." Trump took credit for the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade, a decision that came after three Trump-appointed justices voted with the majority to overturn the national right to an abortion. (One of those justices, Amy Coney Barrett, was appointed to replace Ginsburg weeks before the 2020 election, after Ginsburg died in mid-September.) As president, he supported a federal ban on abortion after 20 weeks. But during this campaign, Trump backed away from that position and instead declared he supported states' rights to decide abortion laws . Democrats still hit Trump hard on those past positions to argue that if elected, he and a Republican Congress would act to restrict abortion nationwide. The late ad blitz from RBG PAC only represents a fraction of Musk's total election spending this year: He also financed America PAC, a super PAC which reported spending $157 million supporting Trump in the presidential race. America PAC's latest campaign finance report showed Musk donated $238 million to the group throughout the election cycle, including $120 million in the final weeks of the race alone. Federal disclosures show America PAC spent heavily on canvassing, text message-based get-out-the-vote efforts, printing and postage (likely for direct mail) and digital advertising too. It also ran a controversial cash giveaway that gave out $1 million each day to someone who signed the group's conservative-leaning petition. Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner sued Musk and America PAC in late October trying to halt the giveaway, but a judge in the state didn't agree to stop the program . The Justice Department also warned the PAC around the same time that the giveaway might be illegal, but it's taken no public action on it. America PAC’s campaign finance report lists each of those $1 million prizes as payments for a "spokesperson consultant." Musk also gave $3 million to the MAHA Alliance , a super PAC affiliated with Robert F. Kennedy's "Make America Healthy Again" push, in late October. It's possible that Musk donated more to pro-Trump efforts too, as political committees continue to file fundraising reports pegged to Thursday night's deadline. The Space X and Tesla founder is one of Trump's top donors this cycle , but he's also been among his most visible. He's been a regular presence at Mar-a-Lago and by Trump's side during the transition (to the consternation of some in Trump's orbit ). Beirut, Dec 7 (AP) Insurgents' stunning march across Syria accelerated on Saturday with news that they had reached the suburbs of the capital and that government forces had withdrawn from the central city of Homs. The government was forced to deny rumours that President Bashar Assad had fled the country. The loss of Homs is a potentially crippling blow for Assad. It stands at an important intersection between Damascus and Syria's coastal provinces of Latakia and Tartus — the Syrian leader's base of support and home to a Russian strategic naval base. The pro-government Sham FM reported that government forces took positions outside Syria's third-largest city, without elaborating. Rami Abdurrahman who heads the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said Syrian troops and members of different security agencies have withdrawn from the city, adding that rebels have entered parts of it. The capture of Homs is a major victory for insurgents, who have already seized the cities of Aleppo and Hama, as well as large parts of the south, in a lightning offensive that began November 27. Analysts said Homs falling into rebel hands would be a game-changer. The rebels' moves around Damascus, reported by the monitor and a rebel commander, came after the Syrian army withdrew from much of southern part of the country, leaving more areas, including several provincial capitals, under the control of opposition fighters. The advances in the past week were among the largest in recent years by opposition factions, led by a group that has its origins in al-Qaida and is considered a terrorist organisation by the US and the United Nations. In their push to overthrow Assad's government, the insurgents, led by the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham group, or HTS, have met little resistance from the Syrian army. For the first time in the country's long-running civil war, the government now has control of only three of 14 provincial capitals: Damascus, Latakia and Tartus. The UN's special envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, on Saturday called for urgent talks in Geneva to ensure an “orderly political transition”. Speaking to reporters at the annual Doha Forum in Qatar, he said the situation in Syria was changing by the minute. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, whose country is Assad's chief international backer, said he feels “sorry for the Syrian people”. In Damascus, people rushed to stock up on supplies. Thousands went to Syria's border with Lebanon, trying to leave the country. Many shops in the capital were shuttered, a resident told The Associated Press, and those still open ran out of staples such as sugar. Some were selling items at three times the normal price. “The situation is very strange. We are not used to that,” the resident said, insisting on anonymity, fearing retributions. “People are worried whether there will be a battle (in Damascus) or not.” It was the first time that opposition forces reached the outskirts of Damascus since 2018, when Syrian troops recaptured the area following a years-long siege. The UN said it was moving noncritical staff outside the country as a precaution. Assad's status Syria's state media denied social media rumours that Assad left the country, saying he is performing his duties in Damascus. He has had little, if any, help from his allies. Russia, is busy with its war in Ukraine. Lebanon's Hezbollah, which at one point sent thousands of fighters to shore up Assad's forces, has been weakened by a yearlong conflict with Israel. Iran has seen its proxies across the region degraded by regular Israeli airstrikes. US President-elect Donald Trump on Saturday posted on social media that that the United States should avoid engaging militarily in Syria. Pedersen said a date for talks in Geneva on the implementation a UN resolution, adopted in 2015, and calling for a Syrian-led political process, would be announced later. The resolution calls for the establishment of a transitional governing body, followed by the drafting of a new constitution and ending with UN-supervised elections. Later Saturday, foreign ministers and senior diplomats from eight key countries, including Saudi Arabia, Russia, Egypt, Turkey and Iran, along with Pederson, gathered on the sidelines of the Doha Summit to discuss the situation in Syria. No details were immediately available. The insurgents' march Rami Abdurrahman, who heads the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an opposition war monitor, said insurgents were in the Damascus suburbs of Maadamiyah, Jaramana and Daraya. Opposition fighters were marching toward the Damascus suburb of Harasta, he added. A commander with the insurgents, Hassan Abdul-Ghani, posted on the Telegram messaging app that opposition forces had begun the “final stage” of their offensive by encircling Damascus. HTS controls much of northwest Syria and in 2017 set up a “salvation government” to run day-to-day affairs in the region. In recent years, HTS leader Abu Mohammed al-Golani has sought to remake the group's image, cutting ties with al-Qaida, ditching hard-line officials and vowing to embrace pluralism and religious tolerance. The shock offensive began on November 27, during which gunmen captured the northern city of Aleppo, Syria's largest, and the central city of Hama, the country's fourth largest city. Opposition activists said Saturday that a day earlier, insurgents entered Palmyra, which is home to invaluable archaeological sites had been in government hands since being taken from the Islamic State group in 2017. To the south, Syrian troops left much of the province of Quneitra including the main Baath City, activists said. Syrian Observatory said government troops have withdrawn from much of the two southern provinces. The Syrian army said in a statement that it carried out redeployment and repositioning in Sweida and Daraa after its checkpoints came under attack by “terrorists". The army said it was setting up a “strong and coherent defensive and security belt in the area”, apparently to defend Damascus from the south. The Syrian government has referred to opposition gunmen as terrorists since conflict broke out in March 2011. Diplomacy in Doha The foreign ministers of Iran, Russia and Turkiye, meeting in Qatar, called for an end to the hostilities. Turkiye is a main backer of the rebels. Qatar's top diplomat, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, criticised Assad for failing to take advantage of the lull in fighting in recent years to address the country's underlying problems. “Assad didn't seize this opportunity to start engaging and restoring his relationship with his people,” he said. Sheikh Mohammed said he was surprised by how quickly the rebels have advanced and said there is a real threat to Syria's “territorial integrity”.
