While being arraigned on charges of murder in the furtherance of terrorism and other counts in New York, Mangione’s supporters took particular notice of the burgundy sweater he wore during his plea of not guilty on federal charges in Manhattan. Later identified as a merino wool sweater from Nordstrom in the color Burgundy Royale, the sweater worn by Mangione has since sold out following his court appearance. Eagle-eyed legal observers noted that Mangione’s attorney, Karen Friedman Agnifilo, also wore a similar color and style in court, where she described Mangione as a “ human ping pong ball ,” but it wasn’t identical to her client’s. Ontario Provincial Police have charged a driver who was allegedly driving the wrong way on Highway 401 on Sunday. Former U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz said on Friday he will not return to Congress next year, a day after he withdrew as President-elect Donald Trump's nominee to lead the Department of Justice amid allegations of drug use and sex with minors. "I'm still going to be in the fight but it's going to be a from a new perch. I do not intend to join the 119th Congress," Gaetz, a Florida Republican who had won another term in Congress, said in an interview with right-wing activist Charlie Kirk. When he was nominated by Trump last week for the nation's top law enforcement role, Gaetz resigned from Congress and said he did not intend to return when the new session begins in January. But his withdrawal raised questions about whether he would try to reclaim his seat in the House of Representatives. Gaetz faced an uphill climb to win confirmation in the Senate, as a House ethics panel investigated allegations of having sex with an underage 17-year-old girl and illicit drug use. He has denied wrongdoing. Gaetz's resignation leaves Republicans with an even tighter majority in the House next year. The party has won 218 seats to Democrats' 214, with Republicans leading in another two of the three seats that remain uncalled. A Gaetz spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment. His seat will remain vacant until Florida voters choose his replacement in a special election. That election has not yet been scheduled. Gaetz is the first cabinet-level nominee for Trump's upcoming administration to withdraw, though several have faced scrutiny over past behavior. Another Trump nominee, former Fox News personality Pete Hegseth, who was tapped as defense secretary, has also been engulfed in controversy for alleged sexual assault. Trump moved to nominate former Florida Attorney General and loyalist Pam Bondi following Gaetz's withdrawal. Gaetz praised Bondi and said she will likely have an easier time winning Senate approval. During the pandemic, AI played a critical role in tracking outbreaks and assisting in treatment planning. Initiatives such as Wadhwani AI’s media scanning solution for disease surveillance and Artelus’s image recognition for early diagnosis highlight the technology’s versatility. The doctor to patient ratio is abysmally low in rural India, with one doctor having to treat 2,000 people. The advent of AI is a morale-booster for doctors. The central government is reportedly keen on promoting AI applications in the healthcare sector. Several state governments are investing heavily in AI rollout in the healthcare sector. An advanced healthcare AI can help the government or private hospitals to roll out telemedicine to make healthcare more accessible, especially in remote regions. AI can also revolutionise preventive healthcare as it can identify patterns early, which will help the doctors to begin treatment at the earliest. In 2022, the Indian healthcare industry was estimated to be worth $372 billion. It is expected to grow at around 20 per cent till 2030. The use of AI will propel the growth rate. But how does AI work and how does one deploy AI for healthcare purposes? AI uses various advanced technologies such as machine learning, natural language processing (NLP), expert systems, and image and signal processing for diagnosis. Machine learning automates data analysis to identify patterns, while NLP aids in processing medical records and transcription. Expert systems, on the other hand, specialise in solving specific problems like diagnosing chronic conditions. Image and signal processing refine medical imaging data, allowing for accurate and timely diagnosis. NITI Aayog has deployed AI for early detection of diabetes and eye-related ailments. Radiology was among the first fields to adopt AI. Startups like Dozee, which developed India’s first AI-powered remote patient monitoring system, and Augnito, a speech recognition tool for medical transcription, are setting benchmarks in healthcare innovation. IIIT Hyderabad is also using AI for detecting sleep quality and sleep-related disorders. While AI can study sleep stages to precise levels, deep learning (DL) can automate the sleep stage data through supervised and unsupervised learning models, said Prof. S. Bapi Raju, lead researcher and head of Cognitive Sciences Lab at IIIT Hyderabad. AI could be a boon for remote ICU assistance, says Dr D.V.R. Seshadri, director, centre for business markets, ISB. "Once a technology such as the one for remote ICU assistance (CloudPhysician), breast cancer detection (Niramai) or scanning through millions of x-rays to detect TB are scaled up, many companies will inevitably spring up to deploy these technologies on a massive scale," he said. However, the widespread adoption of AI in healthcare is not without challenges. A lack of comprehensive electronic health records (EHR) and high infrastructure costs are the hindrances. There is also a significant skill gap, as professionals proficient in both healthcare and AI, are scarce. Additionally, concerns about data privacy, accountability, and ethical use persist. An even wider concern is the possibility of AI replacing doctors. However, Dr Seshadri allayed these concerns: "This is very unlikely in the foreseeable future. At the end of the day, the patient would like the assurance of a human doctor. While AI tools may be leveraged to enhance the efficacy of the doctors, it cannot replace doctors any time soon." "There is convergence of multiple disciplines happening on a massive scale. It may be hard to isolate the application of AI in disease surveillance from its other applications. The regulatory systems to prevent such convergence typically lag behind the application of these technologies, and hence we cannot rule out the misuse of AI technologies in healthcare for purposes other than what was originally intended," Dr Seshadri explained. Sitemate has drawn comparisons with Mike Cannon-Brookes and Scott Farquhar’s tech giant Atlassian for both its growth trajectory and its product, which aims to replace Word and Excel with workflow software tools. The latest funding round has valued the Sydney-based start-up at close to $200 million. Instead of being aimed at software engineers, however, Sitemate offers software for engineers working on the “built world”, including civil, structural, mechanical and electrical projects. He said Sitemate’s point of difference is its no-code “building blocks”, which can be configured and combined to meet the needs of thousands of different processes across industries, regions and compliance requirements. He said his company started booming when COVID hit, and industries moved to digitise most of their processes. “Since we launched Sitemate in August 2018, over six years ago, we have grown every single month consecutively, and our growth rate is still increasing year over year,” he said. Sitemate has closed a $27.5 million funding round led by Blackbird, with participation from existing investors Shearwater Capital and Marbruck. The company will use the money to fuel its international expansion, including opening an office in Austin, Texas that will join its offices in London, Vancouver and Toronto. The capital raising comes despite local start-up funding tanking in the third quarter of 2024. The most recent report from Cut Through Venture found investment for the sector fell to $695 million for the quarter, down from $1.5 billion in the prior quarter, with no deals exceeding $100 million and deals worth more than $50 million slumping to a multi-year low. Payton Sandfort scored a season-high 24 points and added eight rebounds for the Hawkeyes, while Owen Freeman added 16 despite running into foul trouble. Singh was admitted to New Delhi’s All India Institute of Medical Sciences late Thursday after his health deteriorated due to a “sudden loss of consciousness at home,” the hospital said in a statement. “Resuscitative measures were started immediately at home. He was brought to the Medical Emergency” at 8:06 p.m., the hospital said, but “despite all efforts, he could not be revived and was declared dead at 9:51 p.m.” Singh was being treated for “age-related medical conditions,” the statement said. A mild-mannered technocrat, Singh became one of India’s longest-serving prime ministers for 10 years and leader of the Congress Party in the Parliament's Upper House, earning a reputation as a man of great personal integrity. He was chosen to fill the role in 2004 by Sonia Gandhi, the widow of assassinated Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi . But his sterling image was tainted by allegations of corruption against his ministers. Singh was reelected in 2009, but his second term as prime minister was clouded by financial scandals and corruption charges over the organization of the 2010 Commonwealth Games. This led to the Congress Party’s crushing defeat in the 2014 national election by the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party under the leadership of Narendra Modi . Singh adopted a low profile after relinquishing the post of prime minister. Singh taught at Panjab University and the prestigious Delhi School of Economics before joining the Indian government in 1971 as economic advisor in the Commerce Ministry. As finance minister, Singh in 1991 instituted reforms that opened up the economy and moved India away from a socialist-patterned economy and toward a capitalist model in the face of a huge balance of payments deficit, skirting a potential economic crisis. His accolades include the 1987 Padma Vibhushan Award, India’s second-highest civilian honor; the Jawaharlal Nehru Birth Centenary Award of the Indian Science Congress in 1995; and the Asia Money Award for Finance Minister of the Year in 1993 and 1994. Singh was a member of India’s Upper House of Parliament and was leader of the opposition from 1998 to 2004 before he was named prime minister. He was the first Sikh to hold the country’s top post and made a public apology in Parliament for the 1984 Sikh Massacre in which some 3,000 Sikhs were killed after then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated by Sikh bodyguards. Under Singh, India adopted a Right to Information Act in 2005 to promote accountability and transparency from government officials and bureaucrats. He was also instrumental in implementing a welfare scheme that guaranteed at least 100 paid workdays for Indian rural citizens. The coalition government he headed for a decade brought together politicians and parties with differing ideologies that were rivals in the country’s various states. In a move hailed as one of his biggest achievements apart from economic reforms, Singh ended India’s nuclear isolation by signing a deal with the U.S. that gave India access to American nuclear technology. But the deal hit his government adversely, with Communist allies withdrawing support and criticism of the agreement growing within India in 2008 when it was finalized. Singh adopted a pragmatic foreign policy approach, pursuing a peace process with nuclear rival and neighbor Pakistan. But his efforts suffered a major setback after Pakistani militants carried out a massive gun and bomb attack in Mumbai in November 2008. He also tried to end the border dispute with China, brokering a deal to reopen the Nathu La pass into Tibet, which had been closed for more than 40 years. His 1965 book, “India’s Export Trends and Prospects for Self-Sustained Growth,” dealt with India’s inward-oriented trade policy. Singh is survived by his wife Gursharan Kaur and three daughters. The complaint alleges that, during the relevant period, Dentsply touted the growth in Byte's business as well as Dentsply's ability to profitably generate revenue by converting members of Byte's "target demographics" into new patients. In truth, the complaint alleges that Dentsply targeted low-income people with underlying dental issues that were ineligible for treatment and Dentsply sold Byte aligners to contraindicated patients. The complaint further alleges that Dentsply knew that its Byte aligners were causing severe patient injuries but did little to investigate and had no systems in place to notify the FDA, contrary to regulation. As a result, Dentsply materially overstated the goodwill value of Byte. On October 24, 2024, Dentsply announced the "voluntary suspension of sales and marketing of its Byte Aligners and Impression Kits while the company conducted a review of certain regulatory requirements related to these products." Dentsply also disclosed that it "expects to record non-cash charges for the impairment of goodwill within the range of $450-$550 million" for its Orthodontic and Implant Solutions segment, with the decline in fair value for the Orthodontic Aligner Solutions reporting unit "driven primarily by adverse impacts from recent state regulatory trends pertaining to the Company's direct-to-consumer aligner business." During a "Byte business update call" CEO Campion gave more context about the Byte suspension: "[I]n connection with our ongoing discussions with FDA, we have determined that our patient onboarding workflow may not provide adequate assurance that certain contraindicated patients do not enter treatment with Byte Aligners." As a result of this news, the price of Dentsply stock fell more than 4%, from a closing price of $24.41 per share on October 24, 2024 to a closing price of $23.31 per share on October 25, 2024. Then, on November 7, 2024, Dentsply reported its financial results for the third quarter of 2024 during which it disclosed it had "recorded a non-cash charge for the impairment of goodwill of ($495) million net of tax within the Orthodontic and Implant Solutions segment."
