A man who attempted to rape a singer who works in a Thai disco in 2018 and committed other offences was sentenced to nine years, six months and four weeks’ jail on Dec 6. Yeo Zhuo Ping, 28, was also given six strokes of the cane and fined $8,500. He claimed trial to three charges relating to sexual offences against the same victim, a woman who was 31 years old at that time, and pleaded guilty to two other charges. These were for drink driving and dangerous driving offences he committed while out on bail, earning him a driving disqualification for three years after his release. During his trial, Yeo denied the two charges of attempted rape and one charge of attempted sexual assault, claiming he was “knocked out” and could not recall what happened. He was found guilty on Aug 20. Recalcitrant sex predator, 63, gets 20 years’ preventive detention Making submissions on sentencing in November, the prosecution said Yeo had no remorse at all. In delivering his sentence, District Judge James Elisha Lee said having contested the charges, Yeo had put the victim through the ordeal of having to recount her trauma in court. “He has also fabricated a defence that was ultimately self-contradictory and made unsubstantiated allegations against the (investigation officer) which impinged on the (officer’s) integrity and professionalism,” added the judge. Yeo was 22 years old at the time of the offence and so no longer a young person, District Judge Lee said. The victim had started her shift as a singer at a Thai disco at 9pm on Aug 6, 2018, the day before the incident. She was paid a commission based on “garlands” customers bought for her. She would then have to chat, drink and play table games with them. Yeo, who visited the disco that evening with a friend, bought a garland for the victim, and she entertained him at his table, where she drank about four to five glasses of beer. The pair left the disco together at about 3am on Aug 7, 2018, when the victim ended work. She said Yeo had asked her out for supper and she agreed as she wanted to keep him as a customer. The victim later changed her mind and decided to head home as she was due to fly to Bangkok later that day. Yeo offered to take her home and she accepted. They boarded a car and later alighted at a multi-storey carpark at Block 125A Kim Tian Road. There, Yeo pulled her towards a staircase landing, hugged and kissed her. She tried to run away, but he refused to let her go. He then pushed her into a small room at the staircase landing and attempted twice to rape her. He also tried to force her to perform a sex act on him. The victim resisted his advances and pleaded with him to let her go. Yeo eventually left the room. Police CCTV footage captured him leaving the staircase and later crawling on the link bridge to a nearby Housing Board block. The victim made a police report before she flew to Bangkok that day. She returned to Singapore four days later and underwent a medical examination on Aug 17 that year. It revealed that she had injuries consistent with sexual assault, as well as bruises and abrasions on her arms and legs. Yeo claimed during the trial that the victim had made false allegations against him in order to stay in Singapore and continue working during the ongoing investigation. He also alleged that police officers fabricated his statements where he admitted to trying to have sex with the victim. To this, Deputy Public Prosecutor Christina Koh said: “So everyone has lied in this court except him, Your Honour. He is an angel.” In convicting Yeo, District Judge Lee dismissed Yeo’s allegations against the officers and the victim. In a bid to help Canadians deal with household costs amid the high cost of living, the federal government decided to waive the federal goods and services tax (GST), which is five per cent, on some products between Dec. 14 and Feb. 15. For provinces with harmonized provincial and federal sales tax (HST), the full HST will be waived. What products will see the GST waived? The tax break will apply to: _prepared foods, including vegetable trays, pre-made meals and salads and sandwiches _restaurant meals, whether dine-in, takeout or delivery _some snacks, including chips, candy and granola bars _beer, wine and cider, as well as pre-mixed alcoholic beverages below seven per cent alcohol by volume (ABV) _children’s clothing and footwear, car seats and diapers _some children’s toys, such as board games, dolls, puzzles and video game consoles. _some books and newspapers _Christmas trees and Hanukkah trees or bushes What items don’t count? Even product categories eligible for GST relief have plenty of exemptions. Magazines, electronic publications, clothing for sports activities like wet suits, soccer cleats, skates and tap shoes, along with costumes, jewelry and adult clothing and footwear purchased for children aren’t eligible. The tax break is designed to be automatically applied to totals at checkout by retailers when customers make qualifying purchases. What if I buy one of these items but it has to be delivered? The federal government says no GST/HST will be charged on a qualifying item, as long as it is paid for in full between Dec. 14 and Feb. 15 and delivered or made available to the buyer during the same period. The Retail Council of Canada says the Canada Revenue Agency will consider items “delivered” once they are handed over to a shipping, courier or postal service. What if the item is imported? GST/HST won’t be charged on imported goods as long as they meet the product categories and criteria that qualify for relief. What about food deliveries? When a prepared meal is ordered through a delivery platform, the food provided to the customer qualifies for GST/HST relief during the eligible period. However, the delivery service fee charged by the platform to the customer does not qualify for GST/HST relief. When a restaurant bills a customer directly for delivery of a prepared meal, the courier service qualifies for GST relief. Will I pay GST/HST on cocktails and mixed beverages? Mixed drinks that include only eligible ingredients such as beer, malt liquor, or wine qualify for GST/HST relief. For example, the government says a mimosa made of sparkling wine and orange juice, or a michelada made of beer and non-alcoholic ingredients would qualify. However, mixed drinks that include an alcoholic beverage like a spirit or liqueur which did not make the GST/HST relief list would not have the tax waived. This means a sangria that includes both wine and rum, or a mixed drink such as a vodka and soda, would not qualify. What about gift baskets? Gift baskets that contain food and other items are only exempt from the GST if 90 per cent or more of the total value of the basket corresponds to items that would have no GST/HST charged on them if they were supplied separately. The much-hyped Mike Tyson fight against YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul showed the potential power of Netflix to create live, global sports events on streaming video. For many people though, it also demonstrated the limitations of the technology. Thousands of Netflix users reported technical difficulties while trying to watch the fight. Frustrated viewers contended with buffering and blurry video, a result of tens of millions of households trying to watch the bout at once. It’s the kind of thing that, if the event were aired on a traditional network, would have provoked angry calls to cable companies. Live sports is considered one of the great opportunities for streamers, including Netflix, which need mass audiences tuning in to please advertisers. Companies including Amazon and Apple are spending big, driving up the price of live sports rights and encroaching further on the turf of legacy network rivals. But sports are also a challenge for tech firms. Even without buffering or grainy feeds, live streams are typically delayed compared with cable and satellite broadcasts, which means streaming audiences risk seeing spoilers on social media if the events are simulcast. For Netflix, the stakes are high. The company will host its first live NFL games on Christmas, including one featuring a halftime show from Beyoncé. Netflix is also preparing to air WWE’s “Raw” pro-wrestling franchise starting next year. Brandon Riegg, Netflix’s vice president of nonfiction series and sports, said he has “full faith” in the company’s engineering team, which learned much from the Paul vs. Tyson live match and will adjust before the NFL games. Netflix said it worked quickly to stabilize the viewing for a majority of its subscribers during the boxing event, in which the 27-year-old Paul defeated the 58-year-old Tyson. “We were overwhelmed in the sense of the expectation — it far exceeded our expectations in terms of how many people came to the fight,” Riegg told The Los Angeles Times. “It’s as simple as that. As much as we forecast how many people would come, many, many more people came. It’s impossible for our engineering team to test that magnitude of traffic and viewership unless they have a real, live thing, which is what happened.” On the bright side, Netflix showed that it can be a big draw for sports fans, with an average audience of 108 million live viewers globally tuning in for the fight. Netflix said there were 65 million live concurrent streams, calling it the “most-streamed global sporting event ever.” Industry observers say the day is coming when streamers could place their own bid to host the Super Bowl on their platforms, as long as they can handle the traffic. “Once they prove that they’re capable of delivering a consistent, robust, top-of-the-line, premium experience for these events that consumers have grown to expect, then I have no doubt that we’re going to get there,” said Rob Rosenberg, a former Showtime Networks executive and founder of New York-based Telluride Legal Strategies. The technological challenges aren’t unique to Netflix. Glitches have arisen during other live events streamed on competitors’ platforms, including on YouTube during an NFL game last year and on Amazon’s Prime Video during a Thursday Night Football game in 2022. There are various reasons why buffering occurs, particularly with a highly-anticipated program. When a sporting event is being live streamed, the captured video is released in smaller segments of a few seconds in length that are then transmitted to streaming subscribers and decoded by the users’ devices. If too many devices are seeking those video segments at the same time, it can cause a backlog. Streamers can try to solve the problem by rerouting traffic, but even that sometimes isn’t enough. Streaming services can try to prepare ahead of time by buying more bandwidth capacity from the internet service providers, but it can be difficult to guess how many people will watch, especially if the streamer is new to a particular type of content. There may be limits on how much bandwidth companies can buy. For example, Australia has much less available bandwidth compared with the United States, said Simon Wistow, a co-founder and vice president of strategic initiatives at cloud computing company Fastly. Wistow added that if streamers buy too much capacity and it isn’t used, that’s wasted money. “There’s a lot of complexities, a lot of things go on,” Wistow said. “The scale of internet traffic just gets bigger and bigger every year.” Netflix said it will improve its systems to better handle live events at unprecedented scale and work with ISPS to continue increasing its capacity. An early effort at live streaming, a “Love Is Blind” reunion special, encountered technical trouble due to a bug that went unnoticed until people tried to watch the program. The Paul vs. Tyson event was a new milestone for Netflix’s live streaming efforts. For some viewers, like Florida resident Malcolm Scott, the streamer’s issues were unacceptable. Scott even sued Netflix for breach of contract last week, alleging that Netflix viewers missed large portions of the fight. Netflix declined to comment on the lawsuit. Ruto is reportedly consulting widely as he seeks to appease the Mt Kenya region following the impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. Speculation is rife that he is considering nominating former Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe to the Interior docket. According to a source close to the presidency, Kagwe’s nomination would serve a dual purpose. As a native of Nyeri, like Gachagua, his appointment would seek to reassure Mt Kenya residents that the President had not sidelined them. “The President is keen to ensure that the people of Mt Kenya do not feel abandoned after Gachagua’s impeachment. That is why he is considering nominating former Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe for the Interior docket, given his experience,” said the source. Two weeks ago, the Kikuyu Council of Elders held a meeting in Nyeri where they endorsed Kagwe , citing his strong leadership credentials and extensive experience, having served in the Cabinets of presidents Mwai Kibaki and Uhuru Kenyatta. However, some close allies of the President believe the influential Interior docket should be assigned to an insider, preferably from the Rift Valley region. Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir and Sports Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen are reportedly among the top contenders for the position. Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo is also said to be under consideration. His two years of experience in the ministry is seen as an advantage, as he is already familiar with its operations and would require minimal transition time. For the Gender docket, President Ruto is reportedly considering former Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu as part of a strategic move to counter the influence of Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka in the Ukambani region. The President is said to view Ngilu, a seasoned grassroots mobiliser with extensive political experience, as a key ally in the region ahead of the 2027 presidential election. “The President is considering bringing Charity Ngilu into his Cabinet because of her political experience and mobilisation skills. The controversy around a religious Christmas sign that was taken down in downtown Kelowna continues. Two days after a sign stating 'Keep Christ in Christmas' was removed from the nativity scene display at Stuart Park, Kelowna-Centre MLA Kristina Loewen went to social media to express her opinion on the matter. "We believe that it's an important detail that Christmas is a Christian holiday," said Loewen in her video, referring to 'we' as all of the MLAs for the Central Okanagan. "We will be standing united and defending all British Columbians rights to religion and freedom of expression, speech, thought, belief," she added. "Canada is an incredible country full of diverse cultures and religions, and a wide variety of views, and I think that's one of the things that makes us so incredible." Kelowna-Lake Country-Coldstream MLA Tara Armstrong agreed with her fellow Conservative, quote-tweeting the video and saying "a great message from a colleague and friend. I'm proud to be part of a team that stands for what's right." Macklin McCall, MLA for West Kelowna, also quote-tweeted Loewen's post. However, Kelowna-Mission MLA Gavin Dew appears to not have commented on social media. The nativity scene is put up by the Knights of Columbus every year and a permit is given from the City of Kelowna to do so. When the 'Keep Christ in Christmas' sign was displayed beside the scene on Monday, Dec. 9, some people in the community, including the Kelowna Atheists, Skeptics, and Humanists Association (KASHA) took issue. A letter by KASHA to Black Press Media on Dec. 9, stated the nativity scene is part of Christmas, just as "lights, festive trees, and other decorative displays" are also. "This message is not merely festive—it is political, advocating for a specific religious interpretation of the holiday," said KASHA about the sign. The next day, the sign was taken down and the City of Kelowna confirmed that the sign was not part of the Knights of Columbus' permit for the nativity scene. The Knights of Columbus had no comment regarding the matter. Capital News reached out to Loewen for further comment but was met with an automatic e-mail reply. Additionally, the City of Kelowna stated it had no comment on Loewen's video. However, Ian Bushfield the executive director of the B.C. Humanist Association did have a comment. "Freedom of religion in Canada includes freedom from religion," said Bushfield in an e-mailed statement. "Ms. Loewen and all Christians are obviously free to celebrate Christmas as a Christian holiday but our governments have a clear duty of religious neutrality. That means neither endorsing nor prohibiting any religion over any other. That sign, and arguably even the nativity scene, being on public property breaches that duty. She can put the sign up at her church or at her own house but we do not live in a theocracy." Bushfield has previously stated that BCHA is an organization committed to secular values. “Part of that is the separation of religion and government," said Bushfield. Following accusations of misconduct and the resignation of its public auditor , the maker of servers used in artificial-intelligence technology said an investigation found no evidence of misconduct by its management or by the company's board. Big Tech stocks also helped prop up the market. Gains of 1.8% for Microsoft and 2.9% for Meta Platforms were the two strongest forces pushing upward on the S&P 500. NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — After more than 150 shows across five continents over nearly two years, the global phenomenon that is Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour is coming to an end. There is no simple way to encapsulate the effects of Swift’s decision to put on a 3 1⁄2-hour concert, showcasing 44 songs representing 10 different “eras” of her career — a feat she kicked off in March 2023 and will end Sunday in Vancouver, Canada. The tour shattered sales and attendance records and created such an economic boom that even the Federal Reserve took note. But for many who attended the concerts, and the millions more who eagerly watched fan-broadcasted livestreams on their screens, the tour also became a beacon of joy — a chance not only to appreciate Swift's expansive music career, but also celebrate the yearslong journey fans have taken with her. “Right now we have this special designated time to be together, talk about the show and hang out,” said Tess Bohne, a stay-at-home mom of three turned content creator dedicated to livestreaming Swift’s concerts — by attending herself or coordinating with others to highlight their streams. “For some, it’s their therapy.” Bohne, who has earned the title among the Swiftie community as the “livestream queen,” says she often interacts with fans hosting parties to watch an Eras concert live at home with their closest friends. In July, British police charged a 17-year-old with murder over a stabbing attack during a Taylor Swift-themed summer holiday dance and yoga class that left three little girls dead. News outlets reported that Swift met with some of the survivors backstage in London. And in August, all three of Swift's concerts in Vienna were called off after officials announced arrests over an apparent plot to launch an attack on an event in the city. Tens of thousands of Swifties from around the world had traveled to Vienna for the shows. “Having our Vienna shows cancelled was devastating,” Swift later wrote in a statement. “The reason for the cancellations filled me with a new sense of fear, and a tremendous amount of guilt because so many people had planned on coming to those shows.” Through the hardships and celebrations, Swift's connections to her fans has only ballooned and deepened throughout the tour. After the Vienna cancellations, many fans flocked to the streets to sing Swift's songs and placed friendship bracelets — which also became an iconic feature of the shows — on a nearby tree.
