Long ago when she was still a child, I had the honour of reviewing her poetry. The promise shown then, has now blossomed into profound experience and mature insights in well-crafted poetry. The contexts she creates and the emotions she expresses are well beyond her age. The selection of the title itself – Rain in October is suggestive of the broad span of the contents within. In our youth, in the geography lessons, we learnt that October is a dry month – the month between – the monsoon that is blowing away in September and the monsoon that blows in November. It is a period of transition. So are Aminthika’s poems. Some delve into depths which are reflections of great maturity and wisdom, while others are still of the teen that she is. For Aminthika, October is a month of hope, of fulfillment: ‘Glancing up at the heavens, Hoping against hope when The clouds fill the sky That they wouldn’t roll away again Or cast down torrents and lightening But fulfill and satisfy us like the Rain in October’ What is unexpected and spontaneous is treasured. The poems in the collection reflect a young woman’s perception of the world around her, its wants and strengths, corrosions and purities. Some poems are long, some short. Their perspectives are broad, their range varied covering the elements, human experiences, and emotions and the daily drudge of life. Some poems are very short, resembling the precision of the haiku. Take, for example, the poem titled Blue: You locked the door And wept When no one knocked It seems so simple, so ordinary. But the human situation condensed to a miniscule is so powerfully expressive, so deep in meaning. It is tempting to write on each and every poem, but then it will go beyond review, into critical overview. So, one has to be selective. Thematically, the poems broaden from everyday routines to the universal. There are the very light pieces like 3.a.m. where she humourously comments on a young student’s struggle with her studies. The last poem in the selection deals with her vision of the Poet and poetry. She announces her creed: ‘I am a poet I’m only here to gather things To fill my writing with’ A simple creed, to gather things – to store experience. No political or social roles like Lakdas. She is open to the world. Every event, every object is a stimulus. She repeats: ‘I am a poet I’ll take life’s lemons And write stories In invisible ink’ She responds to life’s events and absorbs them and stamps her poems with an element of mystery. But she is aware of the stark realisms of life and opens them up. In the gifted ones, she presents a situation very common to Sri Lanka, specially true of the education system: the Padding up or building up of individuals through artificial means like tuition, favouration, nepotism, what have you! Her character’s cry here is a cry to be left alone to grow up by one’s own effort without being propped up. She ironically presents the character as unable to swim. The falsity of ‘make believe’ is exposed. Without being allowed free growth, the ‘gifted one’ becomes totally helpless: ‘But now we come upon real battles Sailed into open seas And everyone has learnt already through trials To stay afloat But what about me? I must learn mid – battle everything From the beginning Because you’ve set me up Even when I never learned How to win..... The poem ‘The words of a weary solder’ is another poem that delves deep into human psychology. The soldier is war weary: “I only go to war to end it’ he says. He has no fear of losing, His chosen journey of life – was broken by the call of arms. He only fought, ‘to see the fighting ends’ Life has moved on, leaving him on a battlefield ‘locked in starch’ In very simple words, but with a stark succinctness she suggests the tragedy of war. Aminthika’s concerns with the environment is also powerfully expressed. The poem ‘the last tree falls’ is a telling comment on the devastation of forests. The situation is dramatically etched – Far away are the new towns, building after building – the concrete jungle. Here and now, on the spot is: ‘wooden carcass Now forgotten’ The human vandalism is projected in the “sprawling buildings” which has taken the place of trees. The result is: ‘the dust path burns’ Fire and dust; the burning earth. Her vision is penetratingly mature. In the ‘metamorphosis’, she captures the bare paradox of life – that change is no change – Change is going back to square one. So much clamour, so much noise, but the metamorphosis is going back to the old system. ‘You lie in the wreckage of your past selves’ she says. She compares transformation to ‘a moth’ Yu ‘drift down Until you’ve taken back to where You began’ What more profundity could you seek from a poet? And an eighteen year old in that. In her mastery of the English language, in her deep insights into life and the succinctness with which she crafts her poetry, Aminthika is surely heading towards greatness in her chosen art.

Many of the trends, hardware products, and software developments below comprise a colorful mix that focuses on the use of Linux in particular. We also include other current and future events in hardware and software that will influence or characterize everyday IT life — Linux or otherwise. The upshot is that Linux users will see a lot of change on the horizon. Raspberry Pi: Quo vadis? Raspberry Pi Foundation Since the went public in mid-2024, the future of the successful board computer has been quite uncertain. The share price has been volatile since then, but has held up reasonably well overall. The fresh millions on the stock market open up opportunities for technical innovations for the mini-computer, but on the other hand the project is moving away from its non-profit origins. Nothing concrete is currently known about future models, but prices will be higher than before. The continued production and stocking of older models, as was previously the case, could also fall victim to profit maximization. : Wayland is coming – slowly The Gnome 47 and KDE Plasma 6 desktops are forcing the switch to the Wayland display protocol by setting Wayland as the standard despite some remaining detail problems. Most Linux distributions with these desktops (Fedora, Ubuntu, Kubuntu, KDE Neon, Endeavour, et cetera) will follow this specification in 2025. The fact remains, however, that apart from Gnome and KDE, only the niche desktop Enlightenment (current version E20) is aggressively pushing for Wayland. The Gnome-like Budgie desktop, as well as Cinnamon (Linux Mint) and Mate, still offer Wayland as an “experimental” option. XFCE (announced for the upcoming version 4.20) and LXQT are just starting their Wayland conversion. Cinnamon running in Wayland. Linux Mint The replacement of the old X11 window system will obviously continue well beyond 2025. This is a stumbling block, not least because every Wayland operation currently still has to drag along the Xwayland mediation layer in order to be able to display older X11 windows. The current Gnome 47 is the first Linux desktop that is at least technically prepared to completely dispense with Xwayland in the future. Debian 13 (‘Trixie’) Debian A new Debian version is released approximately every two years. After version 12 “Bookworm,” which was released in 2023, Debian 13 (“Trixie”) is due in 2025. With Debian “Forky,” the name for version 14 has already been decided. Debian 13 will continue to offer a variant for 32-bit processors, but no longer for very old i386 CPUs, but at least from i686 onwards. i686 CPUs are also ancient processors such as Pentium Pro, Pentium II, Pentium III, and some early Pentium 4 models. The oldest of these CPUs are over 25 years old and date back to the 20th century. Regardless of Debian’s 32-bit continuity, the recycling of such oldies is usually unsatisfactory. New Debian is always immensely important because many derivatives are based on Debian and must also be updated as a result — such as Antix, Bunsenlabs, Kanotix, MX Linux, Linux Mint Debian, Ope Media Vault, Pi-OS, Rescuezilla, Sparky, Q4-OS, Tails, and many more (Ubuntus!). EOL: Ubuntu 20.04 expires Ubuntu After April 2025, there will be no more update support for Ubuntu 20.04, unless you have taken out the 10-year ESM (Expanded Security Maintenance) support with Ubuntu Pro. On devices with version 20.04, you will then either have to reinstall or make up for several upgrade stages. A new installation with the current LTS version Ubuntu 24.04 is particularly recommended for systems that work as servers. EOL: The end of Windows 10 After 14 October 2025, Microsoft will no longer offer free updates for Windows 10 and technical support will be discontinued (EOL, End of Life). As a simple upgrade to Windows 11 will fail for many laptops and PCs due to the high hardware requirements, a significant wave of users switching to Linux desktops can be expected over the course of the next year. Last year’s Linux growth to a market share of around 4.5 percent is probably already linked to this Windows date. Unicon is launching the operating system for companies. The system is designed to combine security, hardware flexibility, and performance. The download requires registration with an email address. Windows 10 will be discontinued on 1 October 2025. If Windows 11 does not run on the hardware, any (even more demanding) Linux will run. Anton Watman/Shutterstock.com Experience has shown that Linux distributions are generally too fragmented to make concerted and aggressive use of the opportunities offered by the Windows runtime. Only some of the typical Windows detractors such as Linux Mint or Zorin-OS will refer to their Windows-like concepts and optimize them. In addition, most tried-and-tested Linux desktops (mostly Debian/Ubuntu-based, in some cases also Arch-based) are also suitable as Windows 10 alternatives. ‘Immutable’ trend: Open Suse Leap 16 Open Suse Leap 16.0, the successor to , is not expected until mid-2025 at the earliest. Version 16 aims to end the technical continuity with the previous Leap, but at least promises the possibility of a direct upgrade to Leap 16. If necessary, an interim version 15.7 will be added. openSUSE Open Suse Leap 16 will be an “immutable” Linux. Suse is developing its own Adaptable Linux Platform (ALP) architecture with a write-protected base system that increases security and stability. The required software is to be provided by isolated containers — presumably flatpaks. With its focus on cloud systems and automated system management, Open Suse Leap 16 is likely to follow the trend of recent years. The Suse system is becoming increasingly uninteresting for the needs of a flexible end-user desktop. The same applies to Fedora Workstation, which in the Silverblue “Immutable” version is signalling the path that Fedora generally wants to take. The security and maintenance advantages of the immutable concept are aimed at cloud and server instances and mainly have disadvantages on the desktop. Linux concepts > la Nix-OS Nix It is perhaps not necessarily the Linux distribution itself, but its concept of “declarative configuration,” which probably has a great future ahead of it. Nix-OS uses a central configuration file as a meta-level. This allows the entire system to be reproduced identically (e.g. for cloud and server instances), but can also be reset to previous system states (relevant for servers and desktops). Package dependencies are avoided because — similar to container formats — software is always stored separately with all dependencies. The concept requires a lot of storage space and the adoption of completely customized methods for package installations and updates. Cloud providers are already in the thick of it, but Nix-OS should still provide some additional convenience features for desktop users. Linux without ‘sudo’? While Microsoft has included the sudo tool as an option for developers in Windows 10/11 in 2024, leading Linux developers want to abolish sudo or offer a better alternative. The new run0 tool is already available in the latest versions of the Systemd init system. IDG In future Linux distributions, run0 will certainly not immediately replace the familiar sudo, but will at best run as an alternative for the time being. The run0 tool has several advantages over sudo: In principle, it requires no configuration, whereas sudo requires the not entirely uncomplicated “/etc/ sudoer.” run0 is based on Polkit, whose individual configuration is not simpler, but is usually unnecessary. As run0 loads an isolated systemd target, it is more secure than sudo, which relies on rights masks in the file system (SUID bit). In addition, run0 gives visual signals in the terminal and window title to indicate the current elevated permissions. IoB: Internet of Behavior We have barely gotten used to the new term IoT (Internet of Things) when the next “internet” is added. IoB — Internet of Behavior — is more or less a consequence of IoT: the Internet of Things with smartwatches, webcams, health trackers, sensors, measuring stations, and smart home devices expands the data material that websites and apps collect through direct communication. IoT provides masses of additional data that can be analyzed statistically (trends, anomalies, causalities). These IoB statistics and behavioral analysis are not only driven by the retail and advertising industries: IoB can provide insurance companies, health insurance companies, traffic planners, the police, and entrepreneurs with interesting information and correlations that do not necessarily have to be personalized. It is not yet clear which IoB analysis will become part of everyday life in the future. Data protectionists are already warning that there is a lack of transparent user consent for data collection. Huawei operating system In the context of the growing customs dispute between the USA, EU, and China, Huawei is preparing to say goodbye to Windows operating systems on its laptops. In the future, the Chinese manufacturer intends to offer its self-developed Harmony OS operating system. Harmony OS is based on its own Linux-independent (Hongmeng) kernel. The operating system was previously only planned for Huawei smartphones, but will also be available for laptops in the future. Huawei laptops will run Harmony OS from mid-2025. Microsoft is thus losing a major Windows customer. Huawei Harmony OS is said to perform better than Linux desktops. It is entirely plausible that the Chinese IT giant can achieve this for the hardware it produces itself. However, compatibility with software is problematic. It is not yet clear to what extent Harmony OS will also offer customized standard software or integrate it via a translation layer. Potential buyers of the attractively priced Huawei laptops should consider this question carefully. Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be) TP-Link Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) is five years old, many older routers and devices still work with 802.11ac or even older 802.11n. From 2024, there will be more and more devices with radio chips of the new Wi-Fi generation 7 (802.11be). The Linux kernel is prepared for this — from version 6.5 to be precise. Wi-Fi 7 will not only significantly increase data throughput, but will also use MLO (Multi-Link Operation) to communicate across multiple radio bands between the transmitter and receiver devices. This improves both throughput and stability. DDR6 RAM New DDR5 RAM modules with higher speeds and lower latency will come onto the market in 2025. However, DDR6 is already on the runway: The next generation of DDR RAM is not due to be released until the end of 2025 at the earliest. DDR6 will again be significantly faster than current DDR5 RAM. The specification speaks of at least 8800 MT/s (megatransfers per second) for the first DDR6 generation, which is roughly double that of DDR5. Later DDR6 components should then achieve up to 21,000 MT/s. G.Skill HEIF/HEIC, JPEG XL image formats Innovative graphics formats have been flourishing in photography and imaging for years, but they have been very slow to catch on. While all browsers and many image editing applications now support the Google Webp format, the Apple HEIF/HEIC format and the JPEG successor JPEG XL still need help from add-ons for software or additional packages for the system on many systems and image viewers. REDPIXEL.PL The High Efficiency Image File Format (HEIF) is favored by iPhones for photos. HEIC is the associated container format that also stores image sequences, comments, and audio in addition to (HEIF) images. (jxl) is the designated successor to the long-standing JPG standard. In 2025, it is expected that all Linux distributions will increasingly prepare their viewers and file managers for these formats. Experience has shown that the question of which image format will prevail is obsolete: There will simply be a few more in the future, while JPG, PNG, and others will continue to exist. CPU/GPU/NPU and the ‘AI PC’ There is no question that there will be no standstill in CPU development in 2025. AMD will introduce new Ryzen CPUs such as “Kraken” and Intel is planning Panther Lake processors based on its latest production technology (18A). The goals are the same — more performance, more efficiency. Alexander56891 / Shutterstock.com Regardless of new CPU records, the new (marketing) term “AI PC” or Copilot PC (Microsoft) will come into focus. In this product class, which performs AI functions on the local device, a fast CPU is not enough — at least a dedicated GPU graphics chip (preferably Nvidia), plenty of DDR5 RAM, and a fast SSD are also required. The more obvious feature that distinguishes an AI PC from a gaming PC or a powerful workstation is the additional NPU chip (Neural Processing Unit). NPUs cannot process AI models any better or faster than the GPU, but they are much more energy-efficient. computer bolides are AI-capable, but only energy-efficient with an additional NPU. Processors with an NPU extension already exist — from Intel (Lunar Lake), AMD (Ryzen AI), and Qualcomm (Snapdragon). However, it is not yet clear how future-proof these first NPUs are. Mass storage and capacities Mass storage devices are experiencing continuous capacity growth every year. New records are on the horizon for 2025: The maximum capacity of SSDs is expected to increase from the current maximum of around 60TB to 128TB by mid-2025, more than doubling. This has been announced by several manufacturers such as Western Digital, Huawei, and Samsung. The classic hard drive is reaching its technical limits and has already seen its greatest leaps in capacity. However, the current maximum of 24- to 32TB should be able to be increased again in future thanks to new HAMR technology (Heat Assisted Magnetic Recording). Seagate is announcing drives with 40TB for 2025, and up to 60- or 80TB by the end of the decade. Jon L. Jacobi : Capacities of up to 16TB are expected for M.2 NVMe storage on the PCI Express bus by 2025. This means a doubling of the currently largest NVMe SSDs. For end users, the record capacities are hardly relevant and generally hardly affordable. More important is the market law that with new, faster, and larger media, the prices for smaller and medium capacities will fall. Faster USB 4v2 USB 4 is the joint successor to USB 3.2 and Thunderbolt 3 with a theoretical maximum throughput of 40Gbps (approx. 5GB/s). USB 4v2 (also “USB 4.0 Gen 4” and more recently “USB4 2.0”) theoretically achieves 80- or 120Gbps. The first controllers and drives of this generation are already on the market. Drivers for USB 4v2 are included in the current Linux kernel. This article originally appeared on our sister publication and was translated and localized from German. UNGA Adopts Milestone Treaty Against CybercrimeSame glitz and glamour for the Las Vegas Grand Prix, and perhaps another Verstappen championshipreturned to action in the on Saturday evening by recording an emphatic 5-2 win over United. A wild first half played out at the London Stadium, with Mikel Arteta's side going 4-0 up on 36 minutes thanks to goals from Gabriel, Leandro Trossard, Martin Odegaard and Kai Havertz. But, in stunning fashion, West Ham grabbed two goals back in the space of four minutes. First, Aaron Wan-Bissaka got onto the end of a wonderful ball in behind from Carlos Soler, before Emerson netted an incredible free-kick which beat Arsenal's David Raya. However, the game then took another turn, with Arsenal winning their second penalty of the first half after Gabriel was hit in the head by Lukas Fabianski following a ball into the box, with the spot kick converted by Saka to make it 5-2 at half-time. After the break, things settled, with Arsenal managing to see out the remainder of the game with relative ease. Arteta will have some injury concerns to deal with, especially after Gabriel went off injured following his collision with Fabianski, and Riccardo Calafiori's second half substitution. However, the win means Arsenal moved back up to second in the ahead of Liverpool and Manchester City's huge Sunday afternoon clash. And here are five things the Arsenal boss learnt following the win over West Ham... It cannot be overstated just how much better Martin Odegaard makes Arsenal. The Norwegian midfielder was at the heart of everything good for the Gunners, producing a wonderful lofted pass to Bukayo Saka who assisted Landro Trossard's goal which was Arsenal's second. He also bagged a goal himself, tucking away a brilliant penalty to beat Lukas Fabianski. Whilst sidelined earlier this season, Odegaard was sorely missed by Arsenal. It is the Arsenal skipper who keeps things ticking over in midfield for the Gunners and they are an infinitely worse side without him. There was one moment of concern for Arsenal around the hour mark when he went down holding his ankle, something which the Gunners will need to monitor. Come and join The Daily Star on , the social media site set up by ex-Twitter boss Jack Dorsey. It's now the new go-to place for content after a mass exodus of the Elon Musk-owned Twitter/X. Fear not, we're not leaving , but we are jumping on the bandwagon. So come find our new account on , and see us social better than the rest. You can also learn more about The Daily Star team in what Bluesky calls a . So what are you waiting for?! Let's Arsenal got the game off to a flying start thanks to a wonderfully worked corner which resulted in Gabriel heading home. It was a fantastically put together set-piece, with plenty of movement to confused the West Ham defence, allowing the Brazilian a free header to give Arsenal the lead. Under Arteta, and set-piece coach Nicolas Jover, the Gunners have become excellent at making the most of their set-pieces. It is an element within a game of massive variables that you can control, and Arsenal do it very well, for which Arteta and Jover deserve plenty of credit. At 4-0 up, the game looked to be dead and buried after 36 minutes. But just four minutes later, the mood inside the London Stadium changed rapidly after two West Ham goals. First, Aaron Wan-Bissaka got onto the end of an excellent ball from Carlos Soler to beat David Raya. Then, Emerson netted a stunning free-kick to make it 4-2. It felt as though there was still something to take from the game for West Ham at that point and that Arsenal could be on the ropes. However, the penalty from Saka settled the nerves and Arsenal managed the second half well - but Arteta may be concerned about just how the Gunners almost opened the door for the Hammers to get themselves fully back into the contest. Ultimately, it was job done for Arsenal at the London Stadium. They started the day nine points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool, and managed to climb up to second with their win over West Ham. Arsenal now sit six points behind Liverpool, who take on on Sunday. Ideally for Arsenal, the two would draw, keeping City behind Arsenal and Liverpool in touching distance, with the latter having to face and away next week in the Premier League. Should Liverpool win, they would move nine points clear which would be frustrating for the Gunners following their impressive performance. But the reality is all they can do right now is try to keep up, win their games and hope Liverpool slip up.
Fears over losing out on £1million Lotto jackpot due to little-known mistake after hidden rule in smallprint is revealedReports: Javier Mascherano to become Inter Miami's new coachA three-star high school prospect two years ago out of California, Darian Mensah hit the transfer portal with an eye-popping asking price that perhaps best illustrated what name, image and likeness has turned into within college football . The Tulane redshirt freshman quarterback had a strong year, throwing for 2,723 yards, 22 touchdowns and six interceptions while leading the Green Wave to a 9-4 record. When he entered the transfer portal Dec. 8, amid rumors his coach, Jon Sumrall, could be on the move to another job, it was understandable to expect considerable interest in the young 6-foot-3, 200-pound quarterback. 247Sports ranked Mensah as the No. 7 quarterback and No. 72 overall prospect in the transfer portal . What followed, however, speaks to a situation where money has flooded in from all corners and players hitting the market have never benefited more. According to sources around college football, Mensah received a deal from Duke that is believed to pay him $8 million over two years. A $4 million annual average would make him the highest-paid player in college football history, unofficially. A year ago, the going rate for a top-of-the-market quarterback like Cam Ward , who went from Washington State to Miami , or Riley Leonard , who left Duke for Notre Dame , was a little less than half that. In college basketball, BYU is expected to pay top recruit AJ Dybantsa over $5 million for likely one year of his services in 2025-26 . The NCAA was neutered earlier this year in its efforts to curb what has essentially become pay-for-play. A $4 million annual salary would put Mensah on par or higher than nine base salaries of Power Four head coaches in 2024, according to USA Today's coaching salary database. That includes Big 12-winning Arizona State coach Kenny Dillingham, Vanderbilt coach Clark Lea and the recently-fired West Virginia coach Neal Brown. Basketball-crazed Duke, which went 9-3 this season under first-year coach Manny Diaz in one of the best years in program history, going this big in the portal and NIL market is a sign of the changing times. Sources have indicated the Blue Devils may have moved on from QB Maalik Murphy , who ended up at Oregon State , a cutthroat move after Murphy delivered one of the best seasons in recent Duke quarterback history -- and a further indication of where college football has arrived. Mensah was repped by Young Money APAA Sports agents Noah Reisenfeld and Adie von Gontard on the deal. Darren Heitner, a well-known sports law attorney, assisted as legal counsel and called it "groundbreaking Darian Mensah NIL deals" with Duke and the NIL collective Durham Devils Club in a post on social media. Duke and Mensah are just one example of a market that has exploded this transfer portal cycle. Washington State transfer quarterback John Mateer , the top-ranked QB in the 247Sports portal rankings, is believed to have commanded a deal in a similar neighborhood as Mensah to go to Oklahoma in an intense recruiting battle that included Miami and North Carolina. Mateer is not believed to have used a traditional agent to negotiate his deal. It's all part of a new money rush in college football this offseason, where the combination of soon-to-potentially-expire collective funds and the influx of revenue-share dollars are creating a market unlike anything we've seen before. "I'm looking at the books from last year to this year and it's not even close," said a SEC director of player personnel. "You take a contract and you multiply it by two, and that's what you're paying. Everybody thinks they have money now, and they'll figure it out on the backend. So everybody is trying to play fast." Why the money is way up College football is in a limbo period between an unregulated present and the enactment of the House settlement , the multi-billion dollar agreement that will see schools share around $20.5 million each year with its athletes. Collectives can currently raise money and spend with almost no oversight. Those $20 million budgets in places like Ohio State are still in operation. In six months schools will have a new bundle of cash to use -- likely around $15 million for most Power Four football programs -- via the House settlement. Thus, two things are happening in concert that help explain the spike: 1. Schools that didn't have much NIL money before are using their future rev share allotment to spend big. 2. Schools with large collective budgets are spending their annual allotment now before the House rules on fair market value go into effect. NIL deals in the post-House era will be filtered through a clearinghouse to determine if the contract meets a still-to-be-determined market standard. In other words, players will actually have to earn their NIL money instead of it being used as a pseudo-salary. "If you want to use that money the way you have in the past, you have to pay a lot of it before July 1," said NIL attorney Mit Winter, who works with several collectives. " Or even all of it." That's how $5 million budgets become $15 million and $10 million can become $25 million in a few short months. The schools that are double-dipping, particularly, are driving up the market. They've got cash to burn. "They're looking to do as much as they can to deplete those budgets between January and June so those dollars won't count towards the cap," said Opendorse President of Collegiate Operations, Blake Lawrence, whose NIL platform works with 100-plus Division I schools. There is a risk to schools aggressively spending their collective budget or, frankly, rev share money this early in the cycle. The House Settlement could collapse and several schools whose contracts CBS Sports have examined have written contingencies into their rev share agreements that would void the deal if House were to fail. If that happens, those programs that spent their whole collective budget in the winter would be in trouble, too. "There's more money in the game than ever before with rev sharing," an ACC director of player personnel said. "I think a lot is being promised, but who knows if it'll go through." But this is college sports. If there's an advantage to be gained -- even if it's just a theoretical tool -- teams will use it. Where the position spikes have occurred Outside of quarterback, perhaps no position better explains the spike than the offensive line. One agent who represents a large number of portal players threw this out when asked about the contract that surprised him the most: "Offensive tackles are getting crazy money. A backup is $200,000-$400,000 a year. One of our guys got $350,000, and he's a swing guy." For those not inundated in football parlance a "swing guy" is a backup. Starters at tackle are easily at $500,000-plus with the top end of the market pushing seven figures. But it's not just the offensive line where spikes have occurred. The ACC DPP put it this way: "It's just gone up a shit ton, to be honest," they said. "It doesn't matter what position. O-line is up. Receivers are up. Running backs up. Tight ends up. Edge is about how it was. Inside backer is up. DBs are all up. Specialists are fu***** up by a s*** ton as well. It's now like $150,000 for the good ones." Yes, $150,000 a year for a kicker. Lawrence said he's seen a spike across the board in the Opendorse data. Whether teams have 30% more, as one Big Ten general manager estimated, or 100% more to spend, they're spending it. A year ago, a Power Four head coach said every player on the roster was asking for at least $100,000. This time around, a source told CBS Sports, that seemingly every player hitting the portal with experience wanted $500,000 or more. "If a budget is increasing by (two times) across the whole team but a position group is increasing by (five times), offensive lineman is an example of that, wide receiver is an example of that," Lawrence said. "The market is getting better for wide receivers. The defensive line is another one, like you're seeing the average defensive lineman is getting six figures across the entire roster." Quarterback is of course a singular example in the portal. Only one can play and there are never enough good ones for everybody. But the spike in that market particularly has been extreme. A year ago, a top-end quarterback in the portal commanded around $1.5 million. This year, several average Power Four additions -- think of players in the 15-30 position range in the 247Sports rankings -- will make over $1 million in NIL, per multiple sources. The top-of-the-market QBs are well over $2 million a year and sometimes much more, like in the case of Mensah. It's not just positions, by the way. Individual teams are spending big, too. One Power Four administrator pointed at Auburn as a team that's "crushing it" in the portal. That's in part because they're spending, in the words of one source, "whatever it takes" in what could end up as a stay-or-go-off offseason. But no team better represents the offseason spike than Texas Tech . A surprise No. 1 atop the 247Sports Transfer Team rankings , the Red Raiders currently have 17 commitments, including nine of the top 103 transfers. For perspective, Texas Tech ranked 36th in the transfer rankings a season ago. A spike, indeed. The Red Raiders do a good job recruiting, but NIL is playing a large role in their success. Northern Illinois DT Skyler Gill-Howard , the No. 174 overall prospect in the portal, commanded "one of the largest deals in portal history" for an interior lineman, per a source. Several other Red Raiders have received deals in the seven-figure range, per multiple sources. "They're running up the market for everyone," the ACC DPP said. "It's insane. It's premium on premium." Is this sustainable? The numbers this cycle have exploded but they should level off, if not outright go down moving forward once the House settlement is approved and enacted. The ability for programs to double-dip in the aggressive manner they've done this portal cycle will be gone. Collectives are still expected to have a place in the marketplace, especially at the well-funded Power Four level, but it'll be additive to what the school is paying in revenue sharing, rather than trying to essentially double the amount. One SEC director of player personnel predicted "the numbers are going to come down drastically" in a year. The other factor is the salary floor for programs should level off. While Ohio State's $20 million salary budget for this year's team generated considerable headlines, plenty of schools even within the Big Ten were only spending about a quarter of that this past season. With the football revenue share number expected to land in the $12-15 million range for schools, some programs are getting an infusion of an extra $10 million than they were accustomed to. That naturally leads to spending sprees as they work to catch up to their better-funded rivals and keep up with the rising player costs. "The majority had less than $10 million to spend, especially on football, sometimes less than $5 million," Lawrence said. "When they are going from a world where they had $3 to $5 million in their budget to $15 million in their budget, in order to spend $15 million on a football team they have to grossly overpay the current market value for an athlete." A year from now, Lawrence said, those big jumps in spending won't exist. While the revenue sharing amount is expected to increase in the future as more money pours into the sport, it likely will be gradual and not nearly as drastic as what has unfolded this cycle. There will be better data on what does and doesn't work in a new revenue-sharing world as programs populate their staff with more general managers and personnel with NFL and salary cap experience. But 2024 has been a perfect storm of old and new money colliding, much to the benefit of this current crop of athletes. MORE: Dennis Dodd on the rise of the college sports GM
TORONTO — Canadian Western Bank says it has delayed the release of its fourth quarter financial results without saying why. The bank, which was scheduled to release results Friday, says it will instead put them out in mid-December. CWB's shares fell almost 12 per cent in morning trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange and was still down almost five per cent by mid-afternoon. National Bank is currently working to buy CWB in a deal that's expected to close by the end of 2025. The takeover has shareholder and Competition Bureau approval, but still requires the go-ahead from Canada's banking regulator and the finance minister. The bank on Friday declared it had raised its quarterly dividend by three per cent from the previous quarter to 36 cents. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Dec. 6, 2024. San Francisco on Saturday promoted cornerback Nick McCloud to the active roster. McCloud takes the place of wide receiver Ronnie Bell, who was waived on Friday. He does so amid injuries to Deommodore Lenoir and Renardo Green, the former ruled out with a knee injury while rookie Green is questionable with a neck injury. Meanwhile, the 49ers have elevated linebacker Jalen Graham and offensive tackle Sebastian Gutierrez to their gameday roster for the Bills clash. Graham's elevation comes with Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles (knee) ruled out for the Bills game, while Gutierrez gives the Niners extra depth at tackle amid Trent Williams' absence for a second successive game. It means Gutierrez is in line to feature in only his second NFL game, having made his debut for the Las Vegas Raiders in 2022. (AP) — Luis Suarez is going to play alongside Lionel Messi for at least one more year. Suarez and Inter Miami have agreed on a one-year contract extension for the coming season, the team announced Wednesday. The financial terms weren’t disclosed. Suarez made $1.5 million this year in his first Inter Miami season, one in which the Uruguayan striker scored 20 goals — tied with Messi for the team lead — in Major League Soccer regular season play and a team-best 25 goals across all competitions. “I’m very happy, very excited to continue for another year and to be able to enjoy being here with this fanbase, which for us is like family,” Suarez said in comments distributed by the team. “We feel very, very connected with them, and hopefully, next year, we can bring them even more joy.” Inter Miami set MLS records for points (74) and winning percentage (.765) during this MLS regular season, one in which the club went 22-4-8 and captured the Supporters Shield. The club failed to get out of the first round of the playoffs, falling to Atlanta United in the best-of-three series. The contract extension for Suarez, who turns 38 in January, keeps the Inter Miami core of stars with Barcelona ties together. Suarez plays at Inter Miami alongside Messi, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba, a group that teamed up with the powerhouse Spanish club in past years. And newly named Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano — his hiring was made official on Tuesday — also played with that foursome at Barcelona. David Rittich made 19 saves for the Kings, who improved to 6-2-1 at home. Kempe and Byfield scored 1:44 apart in the second period. Byfield buried a sharp-angle slap shot on a power play while dropping to a knee. It was his 98th career point in 200 games. Brandon Montour got the Kraken on the board with 1:26 left in the game. He converted a long shot with Joey Daccord off for another skater, but Los Angeles held on. Daccord finished with 19 stops for Seattle. Kraken: Jordan Eberle will miss at least three months after undergoing surgery on his pelvis. He had six goals and five assists in 17 games before he got hurt against Chicago on Nov. 14. Kings: The power play had been in a 1-for-16 rut (6.25%) over the previous six games before Byfield found the net. It was the Kings' lone opportunity with the man-advantage. After following its 1-0 loss to Buffalo on Wednesday with a fourth straight period of extreme low-event hockey, Los Angeles created a lot more activity and offense to start the second and generate its two goals. The Kings know how to close out games, improving to 9-0-1 when leading after two periods. The Kraken visit Anaheim on Monday, and the Kings play at San Jose on Monday. Cheryl Hines is facing backlash after posting a video of her husband Robert F. Kennedy Jr. , President-elect Donald Trump 's nominee for secretary of the Department of Health and human services, showing him partially naked in the shower. Hines posted the video on her Instagram Stories, also apparently promoting a line of "MAHA" or Make America Healthy Again candles for her self-care product company Hines+Young for Black Friday. "No! You can't take a shower, I'm doing a video!" Hines yelled at Kennedy. "No, no, no, I'm doing a... you've gotta give me a second I'm doing a video for Hines+Young. Honey... 60 percent off." The entire time, the 70-year-old Kennedy goes about his shower, seemingly unbothered by Hines' presence. "Oh Bobby," the video was captioned, followed by heart and smiley face emojis. The video provoked some criticism on social media. "Cheryl Hines went from being tacitly complicit to actively participating," the Republicans Against Trump X account wrote, accompanied by the vomiting emoji. "I've now lost all respect for her." "The MAGA grift runs deep," former NBC Universal executive Mike Sington wrote. "Robert F. Kennedy Jr. appears in a promotional video showering to help his wife Cheryl Hines hawk self-care products. Get ready for four years of this." "Can MAGA just not be weird for like one day?....this is gross," online political commentator Dog House Show commented. Newsweek has contacted Kennedy and Hines for comment via email. Hines, who is an actress, was not a prominent supporter of her husband on the campaign trail. Kennedy previously told TMZ that his endorsement of Trump was "difficult" for Hines. "This is a really difficult issue for Cheryl," Kennedy said in August. "This is the opposite of what she would want to do. "She went along with it because she loves me and she wanted to be supportive of me, but it was not something that she ever encouraged. I would say, her trepidation about this and her discomfort with this were the dominant feelings." "She's a life-long Democrat," he added. Earlier this year, when a Variety reporter asked Kennedy whether he would accept an offer to be Trump's running mate, he pointed at Hines and said: "I don't think that my marriage would survive it." Hines responded: "I think he's right." After Kennedy suspended his campaign in August, Hines released a statement where she said she had "deep respect" for her husband's decision to run for president. "I deeply respect the decision Bobby made to run on the principle of unity. Over the last year and a half, I have met some extraordinary people from all parties— Democrats , Republicans, and Independents. It's been my experience that the vast majority of all parties are truly good people who want the best for our country and for each other. It has been an eye-opening, transformative, and endearing journey," she said in a post on X. According to Page Six , she was seen at Mar-a-Lago on Election Night. She was also reportedly seen mingling with Trump supporters during the America First Policy Institute gala mid-November.Stream It Or Skip It: ‘Blink Twice’ on MGM+, Zoe Kravitz’s Memorably Funny, Brutal Directorial Debut
