Storm Bert arrived on Saturday causing power cuts, travel disruption and flooding, and a strong winds continued to batter Northern Ireland today. The Department for Infrastructure said it responded to more than 500 incidents since weather alerts were issued on Friday night. Winds of up to 67mph were recorded in Ballypatrick, Co Antrim on Saturday. Roads across counties Tyrone, Down and Antrim were blocked by trees and flood waters on Saturday, and properties were flooded in Dundonald, Kilcoo, Coalisland and Ballinamallard as well a Royal Mail property in Mallusk. The weather is expected to calm down as we head into the new week but many across the country will be dealing with the aftermath of the devastation wreaked by Storm Bert for many weeks to come. This was the scene on the Hillhall Road in Lisburn which had been closed to traffic. Photo - Andrew McCarroll/ Pacemaker Press Homes near Moat Park in Dundonald, Co Down were affected by flooding. Some residents at Park Avenue were trapped in their homes by the floodwater, with around 18 properties damaged. Several homes in Coalisland, Co Tyrone, have also been damaged. A local community centre has been opened for those affected. Their homes are now unoccupied with many residents currently waiting for emergency accommodation. Paul Gray is a Pastor of the Crosspoint Church in Dundonald. He opened the churches doors for residents affected by the flooding. “I got a phone call first thing in the morning telling me that there was flooding and I should go check on the church,” he said. “I went out and the church was fine but you could see the street at Moat Park was flooded. “So I said I would keep the church open for anyone that needed it.” Mr Gray said many residents were trapped inside their homes while the NI Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS) attempted to find the source of the flooding and pump water away from the homes. “Initially we only had one family come to us because a lot of them were stuck in their homes,” he said. “That must have been very hard for them because the power had been out from the earlier morning and they had to stay upstairs.” Paul Gray of Crosspoint Church As the NIFRS cleared the flooding more families were able to come into the church or see the damage the floods caused to their homes. “It’s awful. I’ve seen videos from people and the water was up to their ankles or knee and everything they have is lost or water damaged,” Mr Gray said. “It clearly done a lot of damage to the homes.” He said the flooding has upset many residents. “It is a very distressing and stressful time for people because everything they have is ruined. “Some of them didn’t have house insurance and everything is gone. “One of the families has a five or six month old little baby and they were very distressed by everything.” Another family displaced by the flooding was an immigrant family who had only been living in Northern Ireland for a short time. “We have an Iranian family and they have only been here three or four months and they lost absolutely everything. They didn’t even have shoes,” Mr Gray said. “Their landlord came and sat with them, him and his partner sat with them for a long time and brought them some things they needed.” He said the local community in Dundonald had come together to support those affected by the flooding. “That is what the community is like here — we always come together. I had people volunteering here, people messaging me asking if we needed anything. “People were bringing down blankets, and cash donations and food. The local chip shop rang us up and said if we needed any food to just ring in and ask and they’d give it to us,” he said. The church quickly became a hub for residents to receive support from locals as well as the Housing Executive. “Not everyone came here. Some people just went and stayed with relatives but everyone that was here the council got them sorted with somewhere to stay for the next two nights before they get emergency accommodation sorted for them,” the pastor added. Mr Gray praised the local council, the Housing Executive and the NIFRS for their fast response to the flooding. “I can honestly say I think the response was flawless. They did everything they could as quickly as they could but it is very hard for the people affected, like they aren’t going to be back into their homes for months,” he said. This was the scene on the Hillhall Road in Lisburn which had been closed to traffic this morning An emergency payment scheme was activated at the weekend by Communities Minister Gordon Lyons, meaning householders who have suffered “severe inconvenience” from flooding can claim a £1,000 payment through their local council. The Met Office said the weather this week is expected to be much calmer than the weekend. It will begin cloudy and windy with some bright spells and scattered heavy showers. However they are not expected to be as strong as the heavy rainfall Storm Bert brought. The wind will ease and the showers gradually clear during Tuesday. This will leave Wednesday and Thursday mainly dry with bright spells and light winds, perhaps with rain later on Thursday. Into next weekend, we could expect to see light rain changing to overcast by lunchtime on Friday which will likely stay for the duration of the weekend. In the Republic, the storm, which landed overnight on Friday, flooded villages and roads, and disrupted travel. Torrential rainfall caused havoc across many rural communities with homes flooded, infrastructure damaged, roads left impassable, festive attractions closed and Christmas shopping interrupted. At its peak, over 60,000 homes and businesses were left without power as Storm Bert battered Ireland with torrential rainfall and high winds. A man walking his dog carefully avoids the folded pathway as he walks on the grass along the banks of the Waterworks Swan Lake in north Belfast . Photo: Liam McBurney/RAZORPIX Almost 50,000 people were successfully reconnected on Saturday evening as repair crews began operations once it was safe to do so. All businesses and householders were expected to be reconnected by last night. Thousands of customers also had water supplies hit by Storm Bert as treatment plants in Banteer, Fermoy and Dunmanway in Cork were impacted by the storm winds and flood waters. More than 100 roads nationwide, mostly rural, were left impassable on Saturday due to the combination of flooding, fallen trees and storm debris. In Co Donegal, Bridge Street in Killybegs was dramatically flooded, with homes and charities impacted, while the River Feale in west Limerick burst its banks. After alerts warning of rain, wind and snow lifted on Saturday, clean-up operations began and power supplies were restored to thousands of homes and businesses. However, the combination of damage to property and infrastructure, allied to the disruption of critical Christmas trade, is expected to see losses run to millions of Euro. Some traders fear they have suffered flood-related damage to much of their critical Christmas stock. Forecasters issued a low-level wind warnings for 13 counties across the island. Forecasters at Met Eireann said gusty winds will create a risk of fallen trees and difficult travelling conditions in these counties. Storm Bert also played havoc with public transport across Ireland with dozens of Iarnrod Eireann and Bus Eireann services either delayed or cancelled because of the conditions. A number of flights were also either delayed or diverted at the height of the storm. The public has also been urged to stay away from exposed coastal areas due to hazardous gusts which could continue for a couple of days.
Hockey fans believe Zayne Parekh and Carter Yakemchuk took shots at Team Canada after yesterday’s loss at the World Juniors. The Canadians fell to Latvia in rather shocking fashion last night, losing 3-2 in a shootout. The biggest culprit was their lack of scoring, as they struggled to find goals in regulation and went 0-8 in the shootout. To no surprise, many fans took to social media to suggest Canada made some mistakes in selecting their team, leaving too many offensive weapons at home. It appears that two players may agree, as fans quickly noticed both Calgary Flames prospect Parekh and Ottawa Senators prospect Yakemchuk like an Instagram post showing the box score of yesterday’s game. That wasn’t all fans seemed to notice, either. Many posted screenshots of Zayne Parekh’s X account, on which he retweeted highlights of Quinn Hughes and Cale Makar. The posts have since been removed from his page, but several who got the screenshots believe it may have been a slight at Canada for leaving him off the roster. Though both defencemen, Parekh and Yakemchuk are very offensively gifted. Parekh has 11 goals and 36 points in 28 games with the Saginaw Spirit this season, while Yakemchuk has 12 goals and 29 points in 26 outings with the Calgary Hitmen. They were far from the only snubs on this team, either. Many were surprised to see players like Andrew Cristall, Beckett Sennecke, Michael Hage, and Michael Misa left off the team. All are highly-skilled offensive talents and may very well have been able to help lift Canada over Latvia last night. This will all be forgotten about if Canada is able to turn things around and win the tournament. Despite yesterday’s frustrating loss, they were able to defeat Finland by a 4-0 final two days prior. They’ll look to pick things back up tomorrow versus Germany.NoneLINCOLN — Former Nebraska receiver Malachi Coleman, who redshirted this season after a fruitful freshman campaign, announced his transfer to Minnesota on Tuesday. Let’s rock. @GopherFootball pic.twitter.com/sUwysPBI3V The 6-foot-4, 190-pound Coleman, a top-100 recruit out of Lincoln East High School, caught eight passes for 139 yards and one touchdown as a true freshman. He sustained an injury that kept him out of spring camp, however, and, after switching jersey numbers from 15 to 80 to accommodate quarterback Dylan Raiola, Coleman appeared in just one game, vs. Rutgers, in 2024. NU also recruited transfers Jahmal Banks and Isaiah Neyor, who had similar size and skillsets, to play over Coleman at his position. Coleman redshirted and will have three seasons of eligibility left as he plays for the Gophers, who visits Oct. 18. Get local news delivered to your inbox!

Netanyahu is leading Israel into ruin: Der SpiegelEconomist David Rosenberg is rethinking his bearish stance amid this year's huge stock rally. Rosenberg said extreme stock market valuations may be justified given AI's economic potential. Investors are extending their valuation outlook beyond one year, and Rosenberg is following suit. Economist and longtime market bear David Rosenberg is coming around after this year's blistering stock market rally. While he says his updated view doesn't amount to "throwing in the towel," he admits that the technology-fueled AI boom is requiring him to reframe his thinking on the broader stock market. "It's high time for me to stop pontificating on all the reasons why the U.S. stock market is crazily overvalued and all the reasons to be bearish based on all the variables I have relied on in the past," Rosenberg wrote to his clients on Thursday. Rosenberg has long relied on today's stock market valuations relative to the past to highlight just how historically extreme the stock market is currently valued. And he's not wrong. Longtime stock bull Ed Yardeni highlighted five charts this week that showed that valuations have been stretched to historical extremes. However, according to Rosenberg, the extreme valuations may actually be warranted if AI can unleash a wave of productivity upon the economy. This idea was echoed by BlackRock in its 2025 outlook, which argued that comparing today's market valuations to those of the past is "apples to oranges" given the profound shift in America's tech-led economy. Perhaps more importantly, the promise of AI is ultimately leading investors to extend their time horizons beyond the traditional one-year outlook. "Investors are clearly looking out beyond one year across an entire gamut of indicators and developments, so the classic way we look at valuations may not be appropriate today," Rosenberg said. Rosenberg added that even if the stock market is in a bubble, it may not be apparent for years to come, similar to the internet bubble that began to form in the mid-1990s before ultimately popping in 2000. With profits booming for technology companies like Nvidia, the exuberance gripping investors doesn't appear to be extreme or unsustainable. "A bear market only ensues if and when these expectations prove to have been excessive. That day may well come, but Mr. Market has been saying for some time: 'not quite yet,'" Rosenberg said. A shift in the Federal Reserve's interest rate policy could also send markets lower, but that doesn't seem to be in the cards in the near term. Going forward, Rosenberg said he is keeping a more open mind toward the idea that the stock market bull rally could "go further than anyone thinks." "The way to redress the lament of a bear is to keep an open mind as we head into 2025 and learn from the mistakes of the past year," Rosenberg said.
President-elect Donald Trump’s team submitted an ethics plan guiding the conduct of its members throughout the transition period that does not appear to include provisions for one key member of the team: the president himself. “There does not appear to be a provision addressing the requirement for the president-elect to address his conflicts of interest,” said Valerie Smith Boyd, director of the Center for Presidential Transition at the nonprofit, nonpartisan Partnership for Public Service. CNN has asked the Trump transition for comment on why there is no provision addressing Trump’s potential conflicts of interest. During his first term, Trump was repeatedly criticized by ethics groups for potential conflicts of interest relating to his businesses and brands. Both Trump’s and his family’s foreign business ties have also come under intense scrutiny throughout his time in office and on the campaign trail. Still, after winning in 2016, Trump took some nominal steps toward alleviating ethical concerns before entering the White House by pledging to relinquish control of his companies and put his business holdings in a trust, which was controlled by his two sons, Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump. He has made no such assurances this time. Rather, Trump lately has added potential conflicts of interest with some of his latest business dealings. Much of his wealth these days is tied up in stock for Trump Media & Technology Group, a newly publicly traded company that owns his social media website TruthSocial. While campaigning, he hawked several new products capitalizing on his name and fame, including a line of watches, some retailing for $100,000, that he launched through an opaque licensing agreement with a company of undisclosed origins. CNN traced the business to a shopping plaza in Sheridan, Wyoming, that is the registered address for dozens of other companies. Trump and his sons also kickstarted a cryptocurrency venture just weeks before the election, even as he promised to push through an agenda favorable to Bitcoin enthusiasts and investors. Trump has not said how he would guarantee that he won’t pursue these policies – with potentially massive implications for financial markets and the future of the US dollar – in the interest of benefiting his family’s new enterprise. The ethics agreement, posted late Tuesday to the General Services Administration’s website , otherwise “does appear to comply with most of the requirements in the Presidential Transition Act,” a law governing the protocols around transition activities, said Boyd. Updates to that act requiring the ethics pledge were introduced by Trump ally Sen. Ron Johnson, a Wisconsin Republican, and signed into law by Trump in March 2020. The plan requires transition team members to “avoid both actual and apparent conflicts of interest,” to “safeguard classified information” and “non-public information and other information that is not readily available to the public.” It also prohibits team members who have participated in lobbying activities in the last year or are registered as lobbyists, and forbids team members from serving as registered foreign agents while serving the transition. Each team member is required to sign the code of ethical conduct detailing those provisions. Trump’s team blew past a pair of September and October deadlines to sign agreements with the Biden White House and General Services Administration laying the groundwork for a smooth transition. Democrats and watchdogs sounded the alarms over potential risks to national security and continuity between administrations in the absence of those agreements. Three weeks after the election, the Trump team submitted its ethics plan and signed the White House agreement, but skipped the GSA agreement, saying in a statement that the transition “will operate as a self-sufficient organization” and that its “organizational autonomy means a streamlined process.” Trump’s team also has yet to sign an agreement with the Department of Justice to begin processing the security clearances needed for staffers to access classified information during the transition period, White House officials said, adding that “progress has been made towards an agreement.” The Trump transition did not immediately respond to CNN’s inquiry regarding whether it would enter into the agreement before Inauguration Day. CNN previously reported that Trump’s transition team is bypassing traditional FBI background checks for at least some of his Cabinet picks while using private companies to conduct vetting of potential candidates for administration jobs, people close to the transition planning said. Trump and his allies believe the FBI system is slow and plagued with issues that could stymie the president-elect’s plan to quickly begin the work of implementing his agenda, people briefed on the plans said. Critics say the background checks sometimes turn up embarrassing information used to inflict political damage. When he takes office January 20, Trump will have the authority to make his own changes to the security clearance system, which is largely based on executive orders. For instance, he could charge individuals he trusts to adjudicate the information found during background investigations and make a determination on clearance status, rather than the traditional federal experts who have traditionally managed that process. Still, Boyd said it was “promising” that progress has been made in the transition process. “We all continue to hope that agreement will be signed because it will reduce confusion if the Trump team has people with federally-vetted background investigations ready to go on day one,” she said. Trump’s team declined to sign an agreement with the GSA unlocking access to federal resources like office space and secure communications equipment, which has also raised concerns. In the absence of that agreement, Boyd said, Trump’s team “may not be operating on a federally-approved secure network,” requiring federal agencies to find ways to protect the sensitive information they share with incoming officials. The White House on Tuesday night provided guidance to various agencies relating to “best practices to facilitate secure information sharing” with the Trump transition team if needed, a White House official said. White House deputy chief of staff Natalie Quillian met with the Agency Transition Directors Council, which is comprised of senior career leaders at agencies across the federal government, and the deputy chiefs of staff for each department on Wednesday morning to discuss next steps for working with Trump’s agency landing teams, the official said. The Trump transition team signing the White House agreement, Boyd said, is a “really important step.” “Both parties should be commended on reaching an agreement to share information. The most concerning scenario would be if the incoming president’s team was not communicating with federal agencies. Now that the communication is open, we’re in a better position for sharing information about national security risks,” Boyd said.Quanterix Corporation Announcement: If You Have Suffered Losses in Quanterix Corporation ...
There is no doubting that Adam Keefe’s name will ultimately be listed alongside those who have made significant contributions to Giants’ history as they celebrate 25 seasons in existence. Whether any of the players on Keefe’s 2024-25 roster and which are worthy of the status of Hall of Famers may be determined over the next four months. Winning the Elite League title is always the No.1 target in Belfast — it has been since Dave Whistle, one of the inaugural Hall of Fame members, led the Giants to their first title in 2002. In a special year the motivation has an added layer. “That’s huge obviously,” said Keefe of chasing the title in the Giant’s 25th anniversary campaign. “We put a lot of stock on all the owners who have done there job to keep this team here and then the Odyssey Trust who have solidified the team and the investment that they have put into us, we want to reward that. “We want to reward our fanbase for what they are doing for us, specifically in the last two years the crows are fantastic and people are turning up, so we want to reward them.” Keefe’s stamp on the Giants is indelible. Two League titles as a player, the second as captain, have been added to with three more being won under his coaching, including a treble-winning campaign in 2023. The biggest expectation to bring more glory comes from within the 40-year-old, who has won eight trophies as Giants coach, as the team is as much part of him as he is part of the Giants. “It’s 13 years for me, minus the Covid year,” said Keefe, who was signed by Doug Christiansen in 2011 “For lack of a better term, I bleed teal and I take a lot of the history on board. “There are people did a lot of work before I got here and before these guys got here to make this place what it is and that’s not lost on me. “Some of them are still here and some of them have moved on. “This is a great place to play hockey, I got to enjoy it for six years myself and now I’ve got to enjoy seven years as a coach as well. This is my home now and it’s not just a job for me and it’s not just a job for the coaching staff, we take this pretty seriously and we want to reward everyone. “Yes, it’s a special season for us, we are excited for it.” The Giants enter a frenetic period where they play four games between now and the end of 2024, starting away to Glasgow Clan this evening, just four points behind the Cardiff Devils, with two matches in hand. The Sheffield Steelers won the League with 91 points last season — the most in a 54-game season since the Giants hit 95 more than a decade ago — and the way things are shaping up it might take another record-breaking campaign for whoever comes out as champions this time around. “Ultimately Sheffield came in and set a new bar last year. We did it the year before that, they knocked it down and they set their own,” said Keefe. “Now it’s our turn — or somebody else’s or Sheffield’s to hold on to that. We want to be that team who knocks that bar down and pushes through.”The normally reliable centre-back passed the ball into his own net in the 26th minute after failing to spot goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel’s positioning. But a brilliant turn and finish on the hour mark from Daizen Maeda changed the game and ultimately earned the Scottish champions a 1-1 home draw. On the opener, Rodgers said: “Mistakes happen and it was just unfortunate. He’s played that pass a million times and it’s gone back and then we’ve been able to play forward. It was just one of those unfortunate moments in the game that happens. “But he’s a really, really tough character. He’s a great guy, he picked himself up. He was really strong and aggressive again in the game and got on with it and had a real bravery in the second half, because he was the one carrying the ball forward for us to start the attack.” Despite the gift, Brugge were worthy of their lead and Rodgers admitted his side were too passive in their pressing in the opening half. Some tactical tweaks – and the introduction of Paulo Bernardo – helped Celtic dominate after Maeda’s equaliser, although Brugge had a goal disallowed for a marginal offside. “I can only credit the players for the second half, because we had to fight,” Rodgers said. “And we’re still one of those teams that’s really pushing to try and make a mark at this level. So to make the comeback, score the goal, play with that courage, I was so pleased. “You want to win but I’ve been here enough times to have lost a game like that, but we didn’t. We showed a real strong mentality and we kept pushing right to the very end and the players did well. “I thought they showed great courage in the second half because we weren’t at our level in the first half. Sometimes a game like that can get away from you, but it didn’t. “We stayed with it, showed that determination, showed that mentality, never to quit, to keep going. And then we were much, much better, much freer in the second half. “So we’re on eight points, nine to play for. We’re still very much on course to get to where we want to get to and still three games to go.” Rodgers added: “It’s 20 games now and we’ve won 16 and drawn three and lost one, so it shows you the mentality is there, and especially at this level, you need to have that.”
Nagpur: Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis launched a scathing attack on Congress on Tuesday, demanding an apology from the grand old party for purportedly circulating an edited video of Union home minister Amit Shah on his alleged remarks on Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar. Briefing reporters after his arrival in the city, he accused the Opposition of misleading people and wasting Parliament's time with baseless controversies. Fadnavis emphasised Prime Minister Narendra Modi exposed Congress during his Parliament speech, highlighting its history of opposing the architect of the Constitution. "Congress never allowed Babasaheb Ambedkar to win elections. They even denied land for his memorial at Indu Mills for several years. It was only after Modi became PM and I took over as Maharashtra chief minister, we allocated land of Rs 2,000 crore for the memorial," he said. The senior BJP leader further added that BJP govt preserved Ambedkar's legacy by acquiring his London residence and turning it into a memorial to honour his contributions. Fadnavis accused Congress of hypocrisy and theatrics to cover up its failures. Responding to NCP MP Supriya Sule's statement that Maharashtra is no longer safe, the CM dismissed the claim as baseless and politically motivated. "Maharashtra is one of the safest states in the country. Using isolated incidents to create fear and incite division is irresponsible. The opposition is trying to exploit such situations to split society along caste lines," he asserted. Fadnavis reassured citizens that law enforcement agencies are fully equipped to maintain peace across the state. Addressing concerns over drought-like conditions and crop damage, Fadnavis stated the govt has standing orders in place to handle such exigencies. "We will take decisions based on crop damage assessments and bring relief to affected farmers," he said. He acknowledged the urgency of the situation and assured farmers that financial aid and support measures would be implemented without delay. Fadnavis also spoke about appointment of Beed's guardian minister, stating the decision would be taken jointly with his deputies Ajit Pawar and Eknath Shinde. He made it clear that law and order would remain a top priority in Beed. "No one's dominance or high-handedness will be tolerated in Beed. We are committed to maintaining fairness and discipline," Fadnavis warned.
