DALLAS (AP) — More than 60 years after President John F. Kennedy was assassinated , conspiracy theories still swirl and any new glimpse into the fateful day of Nov. 22, 1963, in Dallas continues to fascinate . President-elect Donald Trump promised during his reelection campaign that he would declassify all of the remaining government records surrounding the assassination if he returned to office. He made a similar pledge during his first term, but ultimately bended to appeals from the CIA and FBI to keep some documents withheld. At this point, only a few thousand of the millions of governmental records related to the assassination have yet to be fully released, and those who have studied the records released so far say that even if the remaining files are declassified, the public shouldn't anticipate any earth-shattering revelations. “Anybody waiting for a smoking gun that’s going to turn this case upside down will be sorely disappointed,” said Gerald Posner, author of “Case Closed,” which concludes that assassin Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone. Friday's 61st anniversary is expected to be marked with a moment of silence at 12:30 p.m. in Dealey Plaza, where Kennedy's motorcade was passing through when he was fatally shot. And throughout this week there have been events marking the anniversary. When Air Force One carrying Kennedy and first lady Jacqueline Kennedy touched down in Dallas , they were greeted by a clear sky and enthusiastic crowds. With a reelection campaign on the horizon the next year, they had gone to Texas on political fence-mending trip. But as the motorcade was finishing its parade route downtown, shots rang out from the Texas School Book Depository building. Police arrested 24-year-old Oswald and, two days later, nightclub owner Jack Ruby fatally shot Oswald during a jail transfer. A year after the assassination, the Warren Commission, which President Lyndon B. Johnson established to investigate the assassination, concluded that Oswald acted alone and there was no evidence of a conspiracy. But that hasn't quelled a web of alternative theories over the decades. In the early 1990s, the federal government mandated that all assassination-related documents be housed in a single collection in the National Archives and Records Administration. The collection of over 5 million records was required to be opened by 2017, barring any exemptions designated by the president. Trump, who took office for his first term in 2017, had boasted that he'd allow the release of all of the remaining records but ended up holding some back because of what he called the potential harm to national security. And while files have continued to be released during President Joe Biden's administration, some still remain unseen. The documents released over the last few years offer details on the way intelligence services operated at the time, and include CIA cables and memos discussing visits by Oswald to the Soviet and Cuban embassies during a trip to Mexico City just weeks before the assassination. The former Marine had previously defected to the Soviet Union before returning home to Texas. Mark S. Zaid, a national security attorney in Washington, said what's been released so far has contributed to the understanding of the time period, giving “a great picture” of what was happening during the Cold War and the activities of the CIA. Posner estimates that there are still about 3,000 to 4,000 documents in the collection that haven’t yet been fully released. Of those documents, some are still completely redacted while others just have small redactions, like someone's Social Security number. There are about 500 documents where all the information is redacted, Posner said, and those include Oswald's and Ruby’s tax returns. “If you have been following it, as I have and others have, you sort of are zeroed in on the pages you think might provide some additional information for history,” Posner said. Trump's transition team hasn’t responded to questions this week about his plans when he takes office. From the start, there were those who believed there had to be more to the story than just Oswald acting alone, said Stephen Fagin, curator of the Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza, which tells the story of the assassination from the building where Oswald made his sniper's perch. “People want to make sense of this and they want to find the solution that fits the crime," said Fagin, who said that while there are lingering questions, law enforcement made “a pretty compelling case” against Oswald. Larry J. Previously inconceivable, such personal guides to well-being are becoming increasingly possible because of new and sophisticated genome-wide technologies that capture data spanning entire genomes, Dr. Ortega says. The complex scores are compiled from a combination of data from thousands to hundreds of thousands of a person's DNA sequence variants. This type of large genome-wide data has the potential to predict disease risks, such as heart disease , diabetes , asthma and specific cancers . "Imagine knowing your genetic predisposition for having a heart attack in your 50s, or if you're in the top 5% of the population for the risk of cancer or diabetes based on data from your whole genome. With this knowledge, you could make informed lifestyle choices and receive enhanced screenings to mitigate that risk," Dr. Ortega says. As a pulmonologist and genomic scientist, Dr. Ortega is leading a charge to breathe new life into precision medicine advancements. His mission is rooted in a deep commitment to health equities and inspired by his grandmother. "My grandmother died of asthma, and that should not have happened. She was Puerto Rican like me, and Puerto Ricans have the highest severity and frequency of asthma of any ethnic group in the world," Dr. Ortega says. "They also represent less than 1% of people in genetic studies. So, I've made it a life mission to develop cures and diagnostics for people like my grandma, and for all people." Each person has millions of genetic variants, each having a small effect. But together, these variants can increase the risk of getting a condition. A polygenic risk score estimates the overall risk someone has of getting a disease by adding up the small effects of variants throughout an individual’s entire genome. Polygenic risk scores are not used to diagnose diseases. Some people who don't have a high-risk score for a certain disease still can be at risk of getting the disease or might already have it. Other people with high-risk scores may never get the disease. People with the same genetic risk can have different outcomes depending on other factors such as lifestyle which determine one’s lifelong environmental exposures, also called the exposome . Dr. Ortega says that getting to the point where all people know their polygenic risk scores will require a solid foundation of "omics" research and datasets, cutting-edge technologies and further discoveries of gene-disease links — all of which are within his team's expertise and capabilities. Omics is an emerging multidisciplinary field of biological sciences that encompasses genomics, proteomics, epigenomics, transcriptomics, metabolomics and more. "It's going to take considerable work and planning, but it really is the way of the future," he says. In the shorter term, Dr. Ortega plans to transition more omics discoveries from research laboratories to the clinic. Omics data can help identify the molecular culprits driving a person's disease, as well as biomarkers that can lead to the development of targeted treatments and diagnostics. Recent omics discoveries at Mayo Clinic's Center for Individualized Medicine have enabled scientists to predict antidepressant response in people with depression and discover a potential therapeutic strategy for bone marrow cancer. Scientists have also used omics to pinpoint genetic variations that potentially increase the risk for severe COVID-19, uncover potential clues for preventing and treating gliomas and unravel the genetic mystery of a rare neurodevelopmental disorder . Drawing from his years of extensive clinical experience in treating patients with severe respiratory illnesses, Dr. Ortega is also working to expand genomic testing to a broader set of diseases. He highlights the center's collaborative Program for Rare and Undiagnosed Diseases as an effective model that he hopes to amplify. The Program for Rare and Undiagnosed Diseases proactively engages healthcare teams across Mayo's clinical practice to conduct targeted genomic testing for patients with a suspected rare genetic disease. But what made the incredible showing of 346 yards and a touchdown on 35 rushes and a game-changing 80-yard interception return for a score by Zimmerman even more impressive was that it happened in a state semifinal. The Tigers clinched a return trip to the PIAA Class 3A championship game with a 31-14 victory over previously undefeated Danville on Friday night at Berwick’s Crispin Field. “Up front, I have to wait a little bit for the holes to be created sometimes,” Zimmerman said of being patient on his rushes. “Even if they’re the littlest things when they’re open, it’s easy for me to burst and go through them. I think that’s been the recipe of success this season. Finding little gaps, getting in between them and getting 8, 9 yards a clip and breaking some eventually.” “Honestly, tonight it was just a little bit one, two. It was a little bit of our line taking over, it was a lot of Eli’s determination and grit. Finding seams, breaking tackles, bursting out it into the open and busting the game open multiple times,” Tigers coach Josh Snyder said. Northwestern, which improved to 15-0 on the season, will play District 7 champion Avonworth in the state championship game at 1 p.m. next Saturday at Cumberland Valley High School. They’re big guys and they can make holes for Eli and anyone who is at the quarterback position or running back position. Xiaomi 14T Pro Xiaomi’s T series of phones fit a recognisable part of a smartphone manufacturer's portfolio. T phones look to bring as many of the key features from the high-end flagship range but at a more affordable price. Every smartphone is a balance of priorities, but the so-called “flagship killer” space of high specifications against lower price While the flagships can push specifications and capabilities to a greater extent, Xiaomi needs to focus tightly on where it wants to invest the bill of materials. Having spent time with a Xiaomi 14T Pro review unit, three areas that have picked up that focus are the display, the camera, and the all-important for 2024 and beyond AI features. The Xiaomi 14T Pro Display At 6.67 inches, the AMOLED display dominates the handset. With the vertical edges and just a slight chamfer, the overall feel is reminiscent of several Android smartphones. The curve to the rear edge is more pronounced; Xiamoi calls this a 3D Curved Back, following other smartphone manufacturers by branding as many of the touches on the phone as possible. Xiaomi 14T Pro Thus, we get "CrystalRes AMOLED Technology” powering the AMOLED display. The numbers tell the story, though; it runs at 2712x1200 pixels (446 pixels per inch) and has a refresh rate of up to 144Hz for smooth scrolling and impressive graphics handling for mobile gaming. It’s variable. This can be left to change automatically, or you can lock it to a slower rate of 60Hz to improve battery life, leaving the smooth scrolling and animations behind for more time with your phone. One thing the screen doesn’t have much of is glare, the peak brightness of 4,000 nits contributes to the readability in sunlight. The display ratio of 20:9 matches the likes of the Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro, but is slightly narrower than Samsung’s Galaxy S25 family. There are still some app compatibility issues here, with landscape views offering thin black bars on either side of the main display... which means the thin bezels are obscured by the pixels but does mean that the selfie camera isn’t in view when watching videos. Leica And The Xiaomi 14T Pro It’s impossible to miss the Leica Optics lens at the rear of the Xiaomi 14T Pro. Three lenses, plus some sensors and LED flash, are arranged in a 2x2 layout on a raised square island. It echoes the curved edges with many 90-degree profiles seen in the rest of the handset. Xiaomi 14T Pro Lens-wise, the main camera comes with a common mix of lenses: a 50MP LightFusion primary sensor, a 50MP telephoto lens with 2.6x optical zoom, and a 12MP ultra-wide lens. One thing prevalent on more expensive handsets that is missing here is a folded “periscope” optical zoom. That limits the extreme zoom capability, although that feels like one of the compromises made to get better imagery with subjects closer to the smartphone. Alongside the hardware, the Leica partnership offers two Leice photographic styles, Leica filters, and a Leica portrait mode as part of the package. There’s even a shutter sound designed to replicate the sound of a mechanical shutter on a Leica camera. Those two filters, vibrant or authentic, address one of the long-standing differences between smartphones depending on their regional releases... will the camera software bias towards a more vibrant color, or a more authentic color. Here, you can switch between the two options with a touch on an icon in the camera app. It’s still not perfect in terms of color reproduction; the vibrancy is still there; authentic still feels a touch too over-eager for genuine authenticity, but the camera delivers some sharp images in close spaces and out to middle distance. For the mid-range market, this is an above-average camera. Android And The Xiaomi 14T Pro HyperOS is Xiaomi’s flavour of Android. The global version does have support for Google Play Services, so you have the likes of Gmail, Chrome and YouTube, as Android users expect. Xiaomi 14T Pro HyperOS biases towards a simple UI without overloading the user with too many settings or options. They are there, so power users must go through another layer of dialog boxes. The look and feel of the software is very much focused on large curved corners. This takes up a lot of space around information, and I found myself wanting more information on the screen, but I can see the impact of this look in making the 14T Pro feel less threatening. That’s helped by a less than fanatical implementation of artificial intelligence. As with almost every smartphone manufacturer, AI is an ever-present “new feature” in the software. Xiaomi hasn’t overpowered the environment with AI at every corner, but it is there. Out of the box the handset is set to use Google Gemini instead of Google Assistant, and several AI features in the camera app to help you take, edit, and select the best picture possibl Much like the UI, AI is there if you dig into the settings and dialogs if you want it. Xiaomi’s current AI suite is not as extensive as those from Google and Samsung, so this implementation feels a bit behind the curve. More AI tools are coming in future updates, at this point you can make a fair AI comparison between devices. Conclusions The Xiaomi 14T Pro is an iterative update to last year’s 13T Pro, and the small steps forward, while attractive, don’t feel enough to force an upgrade. Those coming to the mid-range after two or more years with their current handset will find much more to like. The camera has clearly been a priority, and while optical zoom has been sacrificed, the camera makes up for it with a much more robust capability for personal and group pictures. The screen’s refresh rate creates a feeling of smoothness and accuracy that belies the price of the handsets, and HyperOS strips back the complexity of Android without removing it. Xiaomi 14T Pro The Xiaomi 14T Pro is missing some features you would expect to see on premium smartphones. The battery life is less than you would expect for 5000mAh. Neither is a fast charger in the box, but that’s becoming standard at the highest end, so maybe it is a perfect echo of a flagship? It’s a classic flagship-killer, not a flagship. The sale is the result of a new Kentucky law, which allows alcohol confiscated from closed criminal investigations by the state’s alcoholic beverage control agency to be auctioned. Online bidding opens Wednesday and closes at midnight on Dec. 11. Proceeds will support programs promoting responsible alcohol use by adults and awareness programs for youths. “This is a really good auction,” Eric Gregory, president of the Kentucky Distillers’ Association, said by phone Tuesday. “There are some hard-to-find and rare bottles on there.” No estimate has been given on how much the auction might raise. “We look forward to seeing the response to this auction and have started planning additional auctions for 2025,” said Allyson Taylor, commissioner of the Kentucky Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control. The auction features 32 bottles of alcohol and includes a “stock the bar” bundle with bottles of wine, vodka, rum and whiskey, the agency said. 1 2 3 Sambalpur: Forests are the backbone of Odisha's economy and play a vital role in maintaining ecological balance, Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan said at the Odisha Non-Gazetted Forest Service Association's conference. He added, "Odisha is second in the country when it comes to forest coverage and Sambalpur is one of the districts with the largest forest cover. Between 2025 and 2070, there is an aim to increase the forest cover. Four out 19 sanctuaries in the state are in Sambalpur. Hence, there should be efforts made for sustainable development of all the jungle products, livelihoods, wildlife and economy in coordination." He urged for the development of ponds, forest land rights and PESA law's right to implementation. "There should be a continuous effort from the govt to reduce the human-animal conflict , besides the use of advanced technology for the development and conservation of forests," he added. Jaishankar said Sunday. He added that ties between India and the US will continue to deepen even if both sides do not see eye to eye on every issue. “A country like India at this stage of its growth, just think if you are today $4 trillion, and we are saying, okay you have 7-8 per cent growth for decades ahead of us, who would be our crucial partners in the world? I think to a large extent the major resource powers in the world. India’s economic trajectory will put a certain premium on countries like Russia or Indonesia, or Australia, or Brazil or even Canada,” Jaishankar said at the launch of ‘India’s World’, a new bi-monthly magazine. He added that the logic behind choosing India’s partners would no longer be limited to countries “who are nice” to New Delhi, but would require a new rationalisation in the years to come. In conversation with C. Raja Mohan, visiting professor at the National University of Singapore’s Institute of South Asian Studies, Jaishankar looked at India’s future ties with the US, China, Russia and Europe during the launch of the new bi-monthly magazine at the India International Centre here in New Delhi. Jaishankar is clear that there exists a “unique” relationship between Moscow and New Delhi, because of the history, however, going forward its energy resources would be a key to deepening the relationship—indicating a shift to the importance of economic diplomacy for India. “If you take for example the broad foreign policy establishment, not just the government but the bigger thinking in the country, for a variety of reasons there was a sharp anti-Western tinge to it. Look at the reality, who are your major trade partners, who are your major technology partners, where do many of the people go for education...where does much of your investment come from? All that points in one direction and sometimes the foreign policy points in a different direction,” said Jaishankar. The external affairs minister added: “Today I would argue that one of the changes is that the economic side, the security side, the orthodox foreign policy and diplomacy side is much more tightly integrated and their decision is much more cohesive than it has been in the past.” While pointing to how India’s partnership with Russia is evolving through its economic dimension, the external affairs minister also highlighted how, while New Delhi and Washington D.C. may not always see eye to eye on every issue, their relationship will continue to deepen. “The US is a global power, it has interests of various kinds. We are a country where there has always been a strong regional dimensional, but it is not growing. In our own region there will be issues and relationships on which there will be intersections and convergences with the US and there would be some where there would not be,” said Jaishankar. He added: “We have very honest conversations on where we agree and where we do not. That relationship between India and the US is such an important and large relationship. We factor these conversations but keep advancing that [overall] relationship.” There have been a number of incidents in the last year that have tested the deepening partnership between India and the US, including a foiled murder-for-hire plot against a US citizen on American soil, as well as Indian companies facing sanctions by American authorities for their continued trade with Russia. Jaishankar, while pointing out that transparency is required to an extent with regards to diplomacy, it must not involve putting “everything” out there when it comes to diplomatic conversations. “Every government today tries to put out its version, its narrative. To that extent, yes, but then there is the compulsion of diplomacy. You cannot conduct diplomacy by putting everything out there in the open.
