It’s here. American Thanksgiving. While most of our friends south of the border look at the late-November holiday and think NFL when it comes to sports, most Canadians view it through a different lens. They examine the NHL standings – hoping that their team is above the playoff line. Why? Since realignment occurred over a decade ago, 80% of the teams that are in playoff spots at Thanksgiving qualify for the post-season. For those that are mathematically challenged, that’s 13 out of 16 teams. That was the case last season as well as Edmonton, Nashville and the New York Islanders were the only teams to make the playoffs despite being on the outside looking in on Nov. 23, 2023. Last year on that date, the Vancouver Canucks had 27 points and only the Vegas Golden Knights — with 30 — had more. The Canucks performance in those first 20 games basically clinched a playoff spot. This season the Canucks haven’t been as fortunate. Not having the services of all-star goaltender Thatcher Demko since the start of the season due to a knee injury was the first issue that the hockey club had to deal with. Dakota Joshua also missed the first 14 games recovering from off-season cancer surgery. Brock Boeser suffered what appeared to be a concussion on Nov. 7 and missed seven games but was set to return to the lineup in Boston against the Bruins on Tuesday night. Then there’s J.T. Miller, who took a leave of absence on Nov. 19 for personal reasons. Add it all up and it’s a Canuck team that has been treading water without their three All-Stars from a year ago. After Monday’s games, Vancouver was below the playoff bar with 23 points, trailing both Colorado and Edmonton by one point for the two wildcard spots. The Canucks are also two points behind the Los Angeles Kings for third place in the Pacific Division. The good news with all of these scenarios is that the Canucks have played the least number of games — 19 — of any team in the National Hockey League entering Tuesday’s game versus Boston. They have three games in hand on Edmonton, Colorado and Los Angeles. However, the question remains: will the Canucks make the playoffs? Many assume once the team gets 100% healthy, they will find a way to get it done but you know what they say about people who assume. Let’s start with Demko, the 28-year-old who compiled a 2.45 goals-against-average and a .918 save percentage last season to go along with 35 wins in 51 games. Since March 10, he has played a grand total of four games; that’s four games in eight months. After such a lengthy layoff, the biggest concern for Demko will be timing and getting used to the intensity level of NHL games. As we often say when it comes to football, nothing duplicates game speed. For Demko, getting used to the speed and regular chaos of NHL games will be a challenge. Then there is Boeser, who had been out of the lineup for almost three weeks after taking a headshot from Tanner Jeannot in a game against the Kings in early November. Hopefully, there won’t be any lingering symptoms from that injury and Boeser can regain the pace that saw him score 40 goals last year and which he was duplicating this season with six goals in 12 games. As for Miller, when he does return, what player will the Canucks be getting? His play had dipped to the point where he was benched for the last 14:40 of the third period in his final game versus Nashville on Nov. 17. Miller’s production had waned with only six goals and ten assists in 17 games – well off the levels from a year ago when he tallied 37 goals and 66 assists. Then there are other issues that are of concern as well. The second defensive pair of Tyler Myers and Carson Soucy has struggled this season to the point where the organization is checking in with other teams as they look to get help for their blue line corps. What has compounded the problem is that Tocchet has emphasized since training camp that he wants his defencemen to be more involved in the offense and generating more chances. That doesn’t exactly fit into the skill set of either Myers or Soucy so it’s been noted that the Canucks are talking to other teams with Pittsburgh’s Marcus Pettersson being a player of interest. Although Pettersson is a solid defender, he’s not exactly the answer to the Canucks problems when it comes to offence from the back-end. While we are on the topic of Petterssons, the enigma known as Elias Pettersson will need to regain the form that saw him be a dynamic play-driver who scored 30-plus goals the last three seasons. Tocchet and the organization wanted to see more of an investment from Pettersson and the Swede has shown signs of improvement with four goals and six assists in his last seven games. There are other positive signs as well. Quinn Hughes continues to play at a Norris Trophy-calibre level while Kevin Lankinen has provided consistent goaltending during Demko’s absence. Conor Garland continues to play like Conor Garland and Pius Sutter and Teddy Blueger continue to provide good depth while new additions Kiefer Sherwood and Erik Brannstrom have exceeded expectations. Given what we know about the U.S Thanksgiving Day playoff trend, it’s not a slam dunk that the Canucks will make the post-season but it’s not a slam dunk they won’t either. Unlike last year when the team had enough of a cushion in the standings to play games pressure-free for the most part in the second half, it appears they won’t have that luxury this season. As Tocchet always likes to say, things are going to just keep ‘getting tougher’ and the Canucks are going to have to ‘embrace the hard’ as they deal with the grind of an NHL season. NEW DELHI: BJP Thursday attacked Congress for using a "distorted" map of India on a banner at its executive committee meeting venue in Karnataka's Belagavi . The party's charge came after its Karnataka unit posted pictures on X of a banner and a welcome flex allegedly put up by Congress ahead of the meeting. "INC Karnataka has shown utter disrespect for India's sovereignty by displaying a distorted map at their Belagavi event, portraying Kashmir as part of Pakistan. All this just to appease their vote bank. This is shameful," the state unit said on X. The 16 cavalrymen of the Blues and Royals took their horses sedately along South Carriage Drive near Hyde Park. They were performing the daily changing of the guard in Whitehall. The soldiers took this route every day and thought nothing of a blue Morris Marina they passed at 10.43am that day, July 20, 1982. But its boot was packed with 25lb of gelignite surrounded by 30lb of four and six-inch nails and the aftermath of the explosion left images that symbolised for many the reckless savagery of the Provisional IRA. Four soldiers died. But a press photograph from above captured mangled cars and seven tarpaulins that covered mutilated military horses. The day of cowardly savagery had only begun. In nearby Regent’s Park, at 12.55pm, 120 people were settling into their seats to listen to the Royal Green Jackets play tunes from the musical Oliver! Another bomb, concealed under the bandstand exploded, killing seven military bandsmen. The flying shrapnel and nails injured 51 civilians. The bombs were detonated by remote control and the chances of apprehending the shadowy IRA men behind the atrocities were not good. Yet London Metropolitan and MI5 officers were tailing an IRA unit which was responsible for a wave of bombings in England, and the terrorists led them to three explosives caches a year later. Forensic investigation of one of the caches – in Pangbourne, Berkshire – revealed 24 fingerprints of an IRA bombmaker, Dessie Ellis. This year, 42 years after the bombings, Ellis sat, relaxed in the Dáil, where he now serves, to give me the only interview he has ever given about the events that led him to a trial at the Old Bailey. Ellis was one of a number of high-profile IRA terrorists who gave rare interviews for an Irish Daily Mail podcast series that I host, From Bomb to Ballot: The History of Sinn Féin , which has just launched. Sinn Féin has said little down the years about these bombing atrocities, only issuing a press release, over a decade ago, saying that its TD, Ellis, had been tried on ‘trumped up charges’. Ellis sees his ultimate escape from British justice somewhat differently: he joked with me at Leinster House a few months ago that beating the charges for his alleged involvement in these bombings made him luckier than someone winning the lottery. Ellis takes up the story on the morning of his arrest in Finglas in Dublin . ‘The hunger strikes were in full process,’ he says. ‘Bobby Sands had died and then Francis Hughes he died, and that morning the house [his mother’s house in Finglas] was raided by the Special Branch and I was arrested.’ The hunger strikes he refers to were those in which ten men died in Long Kesh in 1981, which our podcast also chronicles. These events catapulted Sinn Féin towards electoral success. Ellis ran a TV repair business, and, he said, his skills were found to be useful for ‘the struggle’. But being a TV repair man by day and terrorist bomb maker by night took its toll. ‘When someone is worn out, they make mistakes,’ he says. ‘I was just completely and utterly engrossed in the struggle. On top of that, I was running a business so it got to a point where I just became careless.’ Explosives were found under his bed in his room in his mother’s house. The authorities let the then 29-year-old out on bail, and in 1982, as Ellis describes it, ‘a decision was made that I go to the United States, for obvious reasons’. The Republican movement was then led by Gerry Adams, who was the following year to be elected to Westminster. It was a ‘collective decision’ to run, says Ellis. It began a ten-year struggle of another kind: to evade justice through bailjumping, hunger strikes and legal manoeuvre. Ellis skipped bail to Canada, and was arrested walking across the border into the US. He was imprisoned in the infamous Metropolitan Correction Centre in New York, which subsequently housed Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell. The first of his many ruses to avoid unfavourable jails occurred when the authorities tried to move him to the even more infamous Otisville Federal Penitentiary in upstate New York. ‘It was just like what you see in the pictures, you know, with a car going around with guys with shotguns, driving around the perimeter and the snow was on the ground, but I told them “I’m on hunger strike, I’m not going to handle this”,’ he says. ‘I ended up practically naked going in because I wouldn’t put on any clothes.’ Incredibly, disinclined to have a half-naked hunger striker in his prison, the Governor sent Ellis back to MCC. Ellis takes us through an increasingly bizarre, never before recounted story, of how one of the IRA’s most celebrated heroes joined various gangs for protection in American prisons, before eventually being extradited back to Ireland, where he served eight years for, in his words, ‘possession of explosives devices’. But an extradition treaty had just been signed between Ireland and Britain and, eventually, in 1991 the British authorities succeeded in having Ellis extradited, again. I told Ellis that as a young child, in our shared home place of north Dublin, I recall seeing ‘Free Dessie Ellis’ graffiti daubed on walls, for it became another Sinn Féin/IRA cause, keeping their man away from the British. Ellis went on hunger strike, again, but, the inevitable grind of the wheels of justice brought him to London’s Old Bailey. Yet, says Ellis, ‘I beat the charges in England.’ The failure to convict a number of accused people down the years for the two deadly bombings has never been accepted by the families of the victims, and the true story has been shrouded in opaque and legalistic arguments. In 2012, Irish newspapers printed official British Government papers which revealed Ellis as a suspected mass murderer. Civil servants said he was linked ‘to some 50 murders in Northern Ireland and the Republic’. The British Crown Prosecution case was that, although there was no evidence that Ellis was ever in Britain, there was clear fingerprint evidence ‘which indicates that he must have been concerned in the manufacture of some of the equipment found in that [Pangbourne] cache’ and that this was evidence that he was involved in the conspiracy to cause explosions. ‘There was a couple of reasons why I beat the charges,’ Ellis told us on that muggy afternoon, last June. ‘No one had ever won against a conspiracy case in England. But the problem was there was a loophole that you have to be made fully aware of where items [bombs] were going. And I couldn’t tell where they were going. ‘It was a case of double jeopardy because the items were very similar to the ones I was arrested on [in Ireland]. It was a mixture of things.’ When we put it specifically to Ellis that the Pangbourne arms dump was linked to the Hyde Park and Regent’s Park bombs, he says: ‘While they might have found my prints, they couldn’t prove that I was actually in England and that I was aware that certain events would take place. If you made something it could go to Europe, it could go anywhere.’ The case against Ellis collapsed and he was taken to a local police station to be released. There, he tells me, laughing: ‘There was a guy sitting reading the paper and the big headline on the paper was “This Man Won the Lottery”. One of the Special Branch men says, “I don’t know which is the luckiest, you or him.” I just said, “maybe me”.’ When Ellis got back to Ireland in 1991, he found that the Irish authorities had no more forgotten him than the British law men had and he was, he says, ‘too hot’ to go back into active service with the IRA. So, like another infamous IRA volunteer and convicted gunrunner, Martin Ferris, who also gives his first ever extensive recorded interview to our podcast, Ellis found politics was the only way to serve the movement. He was elected to Dublin City Council and, eventually, to Dáil Éireann , in 2011, joining Ferris, with Gerry Adams as the parliamentary leader of Sinn Féin. It was the party’s seismic ‘victory’ in the 2020 General Election, and its subsequent soaring poll ratings, that sparked the idea for this podcast. We interview former IRA terrorists, Sinn Féin politicians, and leading British politicians. We also speak to victims and peacemakers. With the election campaign underway here, Sinn Féin is seeking to build on its success. It failed to take power in Ireland’s proportional representative political system, mainly because there is too much residual loathing – and fear – in traditional parties to contemplate coalition. The traits – secrecy, overbearing loyalty to the cause, deception and tendency to criminality – that made the IRA so brutally successful have caught up with Sinn Féin, and it is again mired in controversy. There have been ugly scandals involving paedophilia and the party’s cover-ups of such activity, and there is a frequency of such behaviour in the history of Sinn Féin and the IRA. The party’s electoral chances are suspect, to say the least. Leader Mary Lou McDonald, who succeeded Adams, has repeatedly failed to fulfil promised interview commitments for the Irish Daily Mail podcast. When we finally caught up with her she rejected suggestions that she will resign if she fails to lead her party into Government. Ellis isn’t the only candidate in this election with a record. With notorious criminal Gerry ‘the Monk’ Hutch standing against McDonald in her constituency, she may even lose her seat. One of the least likely Sinn Féin TDs to lose out in this election is Ellis. He won over 44 per cent of the vote in 2020 – an extraordinary result for a single candidate in a multi-seat constituency – and he is doing well according to private polling. Sinn Féin has been dragged back into the lower regions of popularity due to its incoherent stance on immigration, but mostly by its association with terrorism and criminality, and the political longevity of characters like Ellis. He reminds the electorate of the Troubles. Ellis, 71, still lives in Finglas, on a working-class street in a nondescript former council house. He’s fit and trains in karate, for which he holds a black belt. He supported the Good Friday Agreement, following Adams. I ask him what his opinion of the Hyde Park and Regent’s Park bombing is now. He said he wouldn’t comment directly on those heinous acts, but added: ‘We were in a war and there were a lot of things on both sides that happened that shouldn’t have happened. I am a great believer in that you make decisions, you stand by them. You don’t sit down and regret them.’ His interpretation of why peace eventually came was because the British and the IRA had reached a ‘stalemate’, but, he says, his ultimate goal can still be reached. ‘We are working towards a United Ireland, and we’re at a point now where that’s inevitable into the future,’ he says. ‘That has been my ultimate goal.’ The issue of a United Ireland has been a peripheral matter in this election campaign, with the prosaic issues of the economy, and housing taking centre stage. Sinn Féin’s chances of entering Government are as slim as Scotland Yard’s hopes were of finding a lead to the perpetrators of some of the most callous acts of terrorism seen in the UK 40 years ago. But strange things happen in this era of rising populism. Ellis, though, enjoying his 33rd year of liberty, will be elected and continue a comfortable life, unlike the victims he cut down before their time. The Qatar Stock Exchange (QSE) Index decreased by 45.33 points or 0.43% during the week to close at 10,413.41, according to QNB Financial Services (QNBFS). Market capitalisation declined by 0.6% to reach QR615.2bn on Thursday from QR619.1bn at the end of the previous trading week, QNBFS said in its weekly market report. Of the 51 traded companies, some 39 ended the week down, 10 ended up, and two remained the same. Widam Food Company (WDAM) was the worst performing stock for the week, declining 5.1%. Meanwhile, Dukhan Bank (DUBK) was the best performing stock for the week, climbing 3.6%. QNB Group (QNBK), Ooredoo (ORDS) and Qatar Islamic Bank (QIBK) were the main contributors to the weekly index decline. QNBK and ORDS removed 15.04 and 10.65 points from the index, respectively. The recent shutdown of the 3G network that caused a nightmare for consumers should serve as a lesson for future service upgrades, writes Paul Budde . THE GLOBAL TRANSITION away from 3G networks marks a pivotal moment in telecommunications, as resources are reallocated to support advanced 4G and 5G technologies. This is not the first time this has happened after the previous generation of 2G was also phased out. A big difference now is that more people are connected to the 3G service and also the critical importance of mobile telephony has significantly grown. While this shift is again essential for modern connectivity, the current process – with more people connected – has revealed significant challenges, as seen in Australia’s recent shutdown but also in similar transitions in other parts of the world. These experiences highlight both the opportunities and pitfalls of moving to a more connected future. In Australia, the 3G shutdown has been anything but seamless. Announced as early as 2019, the process gained momentum in 2024 with phased shutdowns by Telstra , Optus and Vodafone . However, the transition left many consumers unprepared, particularly those with 4G and 5G devices – often bought overseas, often over the internet – that lacked Voice over Long-Term Evolution ( VoLTE ) capability — an essential technology for connection to the 000 network. Australia’s 3G shutdown: Why your 4G/5G phone is now blocked The ill-planned shutdown of Australia's 3G network not only happened with little notice, but has caused a technological nightmare for consumers. For these users, 3G was still critical for making such calls. When the network was finally decommissioned, 258,000 4G devices (less than 1 per cent of all mobile phones) were left unable to perform basic functions. The Australian Communications and Media Authority ( ACMA ) attempted to address this by mandating carriers to block devices that could not make emergency calls over 4G. Telecom companies also handed out new handsets to some of these customers. While all well-intentioned, this approach still resulted in abrupt service blackouts for many users. The consumer impact of the shutdown was compounded by short notice and mixed messaging. Some users received conflicting information about whether their devices were compatible, while others learned of the shutdown only days before it took effect. The public consultation process for regulatory changes was rushed, lasting just two weeks instead of the usual four to five. This left many feeling that their concerns were overlooked. Critics also pointed out that telecommunications companies prioritised profits over preparedness, leaving consumers to bear the brunt of the disruptions. Internationally, the story has played out differently in countries that have already phased out 3G or are planning to do so. While similar issues arose, these were mitigated by extensive consumer outreach programs. Countries have adopted several strategies to maintain service for 3G handsets during network shutdowns. Many, such as the UK and Germany, have chosen to keep their 2G networks active, ensuring basic voice and SMS services remain available for older devices and emergency access. In places like France and Canada, extended timelines for the 3G shutdown provide users with more time to transition to newer devices, reducing immediate disruptions. Device upgrade programs have been a key approach, with countries like the U.S. and Singapore offering subsidies, trade-ins, and free VoLTE-capable phones to ease the financial burden on consumers. In some regions, minimal 3G infrastructure has been retained solely for emergency communications, as seen in Japan. Support for vulnerable populations has also been prioritised, with initiatives like personalised assistance and home visits in New Zealand helping to ensure no one is left disconnected. 5G could be a game changer — or simply a 4G upgrade While advocates of 5G believe it will revolutionise computing and telecommunications, it can be argued that it will only offer a step up from current 4G. Network sharing has played a role in India, where dual-SIM options and shared infrastructure allow users to continue accessing 2G or 3G services alongside upgraded 4G/5G capabilities. Hybrid solutions, such as software updates in China, enable limited compatibility of 3G devices with modern networks. These approaches collectively focus on maintaining accessibility, safeguarding public safety and minimising consumer disruption during the transition to advanced technologies. Australia’s experience highlights the critical need for a much better strategy. There were already many examples and solutions available to them from overseas, but they reacted rather late, creating lots of confusion. It is very clear that consumers must receive consistent and timely information to prepare adequately over a longer period of time (France allows for five years). Support mechanisms, such as device upgrade programs and technical assistance, are equally vital in easing the transition. Regulatory oversight also plays a crucial role in ensuring that carriers prioritise public interests over corporate convenience, especially when public safety and accessibility are at stake. It appears that the regulators in Australia were insufficiently aware of the potential problems. Looking ahead, the 3G shutdown serves as a cautionary tale for the next shutdowns when eventually 4G and 5G will be phased out — 6G is on the agenda for release around 2030. While the shift to 4G and 5G is necessary to meet the demands of modern connectivity, it must be better managed in a way that balances technological progress with consumer protection. By learning from its own as well as global successes and failures, future network upgrades can be executed more smoothly, ensuring that progress does not come at the expense of accessibility, safety, or public trust. As the world moves toward a more connected future, these lessons are more important than ever.
