fish market Peter Anholt tried to keep things light as he emerged from one of the elevators at Canada’s hotel. The temperature had been turned way up on the veteran hockey executive and the country’s under-20 program after a stunning upset some 12 hours earlier. “You only want to talk to me when things are bad, eh?” Anholt joked to reporters Saturday morning. “Is that how this works?” That is indeed what happens when a powerhouse with a record 20 gold medals expected to roll over an opponent suffers one of its worst all-time defeats at the tournament. Canada was embarrassed on home soil 3-2 by Latvia — a country it had thumped by a combined 41-4 score across four previous meetings — in a shocking shootout Friday. Coming off a disastrous fifth-place finish last year in Sweden and having talked a lot about upping their compete level and preparation, the Canadians looked disjointed for long stretches against the plucky, hard-working Latvians. The power play finally clicked late in the third period, but stands at 1-for-7 through two games, while the top line of Easton Cowan, Calum Ritchie and Bradly Nadeau has yet to translate its pre-tournament chemistry into success in the spotlight. “We’re certainly trying to problem solve, but not throw the baby out with the bath water,” said Anholt, who heads the world junior setup. “We’ve got to be really careful.” Canada, which picked up a solid 4-0 victory over Finland to open its tournament Thursday, had plenty of offensive zone time and directed 57 shots at Latvian goaltender Linards Feldbergs. Included in that total, however, were far too many one-and-done efforts from the perimeter with little traffic in front. There were, of course, desperate spurts — especially late in regulation and in 3-on-3 overtime — but not nearly enough for a roster peppered with first-round NHL draft picks and top prospects. “We played really, really hard,” Anholt said in defending his players. “We controlled the puck lots. We created some chances. Their goalie was really good and they defended really good ... 99 times out of 100 we win that game.” Hoping for a big response Sunday against Germany before meeting the United States on New Year’s Eve to tie a bow on round-robin action in Group A, Canada will have to push ahead minus one of its best players. Star defenceman Matthew Schaefer was injured Friday and is done for the tournament after he slammed into Latvia’s net and skated off favouring his left shoulder area. “Tough blow for the kid,” Anholt said. “The way he plays the game, he plays it at such a high speed.” Cowan, a Toronto Maple Leafs first-round selection, said Canada remains confident despite Friday’s ugly result in the nation’s capital. “We’re good,” said the 19-year-old from Mount Brydges, Ont. “Everyone’s lost a hockey game before.” But not like that — or to that opponent on that stage. “Bit of a (crappy) feeling,” said Nadeau, a Carolina Hurricanes prospect from St-Francois-de-Madawaska, N.B. “We all know what this group is capable of. Losing that game is not our standard. “We’ll bounce back.” Some corners of social media exploded following the Latvian debacle, with heavy criticism directed at head coach Dave Cameron and the team’s overall roster construction. “We’re not really worried about it,” defenceman and Ottawa native Oliver Book, who like Cowan is back from last year’s team, said of the outside noise. “We know we didn’t play well.” Canada appears poised to mix things up against the Germans. Vancouver Canucks prospect Sawyer Mynio of Kamloops, B.C., is set draw in for Schaefer, while Anholt indicated there’s a good chance forward Carson Rehkopf will get his first crack at the 2025 tournament as a returnee. The 19-year-old Seattle Kraken second-round pick from Vaughan, Ont., has scored a combined 78 goals over his last 97 regular-season and playoff games in the Ontario Hockey League. “Great player,” Cowan said. “He finds ways.” Anholt said taking a big-picture approach is key in challenging moments. “Let’s not panic,” he said. “The world hasn’t fallen in. It’s hard, but we’ll learn from it.” It’s something Canada will have to do under intense scrutiny. “People are gonna love you and people are gonna hate you,” said Cowan, who has a goal an assist through two games. “Gotta keep doing you.” Anholt, who was also at the helm 12 months ago when Canada never got in gear, isn’t getting 2024 vibes from this year’s group. “Not even in any way, shape or form,” he said. “We’ve just got to take care of business.” They get a first shot at redemption Sunday.

The likes of Djihad Bizimana and Ange Mutsinzi helped their respective teams play European football while others like Samuel Gueulette and Josias King Furaha had stellar performances which made an impact to their clubs’ ambitions. Times Sport brings to you Rwanda's best footballers of 2024. Fiacre Ntwari (Goalkeeper)-Kaizer Chiefs Ntwari had an outstanding 2023/24 season and was among the best keepers in the South African Premiership last season. He joined Kaizer Chiefs from TS Galaxy for an amount in excess of $400,000. Although he is yet to hit the ground running form at Chiefs, Ntwari has been absolutely superb at national team level. He single-handedly saved Rwanda against Nigeria in an AFCON 2025 qualifier held in Kigali on September 10, making as many as 10 crucial saves, a performance that left Super Eagles coach Augustine Eguavoen impressed. Ntwari had a fantastic year between Amavubi spots during both AFCON 2025 and World Cup 2026 qualifiers, but he will have to rediscover his club form or Spittler will be pushed to think of alternatives in 2025. Fitina Omborenga (Right-back) Omborenga was part of the APR team which won the 2023/24 league title before moving to arch rivals Rayon Sports at the end of the season. He is also among very few players who played all Amavubi matches except Rwanda’s recent 3-2 defeat to South Sudan in the CHAN qualifier in Juba on December 22. Omborenga provided the crucial assist for Jojea Kwizera to score the only goal against Lesotho in the 2026 World Cup qualifier game in South Africa on June 11. He has also established himself as a key figure in Robertinho’s Rayon Sports who will finish 2024 at the top of the Rwanda Premier League. Emmanuel Imanishimwe (left-back) Imanishimwe had attained cult status in his three-year stint with AS FAR Rabat of Morocco before joining Cypriot outfit AEL Limassol in June 2024. He has so far adapted to the Cypriot Premier League and he is always in the starting 11 when he is fully fit. On the international scene, he provided two assists in the AFCON qualifiers for Amavubi which was against Benin and Nigeria. Ange Mutsinzi (Centre-back) Mutsinzi started the 2024 season with then Norwegian third tier club FK Jerv where he played 12 games scoring 1 goal before being signed by Zira FK of Azerbaijan who were competing in the Europa Conference League. He featured in all their games as they were bundled out by Omonia Nicosia of Cyprus. On the international scene, Mutsinzi played every minute of the Amavubi main team games throughout the year. He scored the equalizer in a 2-1 AFCON qualifiers match against Nigeria in Uyo on November 18. Clement Niyigena (Centre-back) The APR centre back had an exceptional year at the back as the army club went unbeaten in the 2023/24 season. He was named the best player of the tournament in the 2024 CECAFA Kagame Cup in Tanzania where APR FC reached the finals. On the international scene, Niyigena rose to the occasion when he started twice against Benin in Abidjan and Kigali as regular starter Thierry Manzi was sidelined through injury. Manzi may be Spittler’s No1 choice in Amavubi defence, but Niyigena has always made sure the Ahli Tripoli star’s absence was not felt whenever he was introduced. Djihad Bizimana (Defensive Midfield) Amavubi skipper Djihad Bizimana enjoyed an incredible 2024 and his performance at both club and national team levels showed what a top player he is. In the 2023/24 season which ended in June 2024, he made 28 appearances scoring twice and providing one assist as Kryvbas qualified for the Europa League. He played in all their Europa League qualifying round as well as Conference League play-off games. The 2024/25 season, which began in August, has seen him playing 16 games so far. On the international front, he has been ever present in the Amavubi games this year. He played 10 games for Amavubi in all competitions and scored twice. ALSO READ: Bizimana optimistic Rwanda can break the jinx vs Benin in Kigali Samuel Gueulette (Central Midfield) It was a remarkable year for the Raal La Louviere assistant captain who played an instrumental role in club’s qualification to the second tier league. Gueulette signed a new two-year contract in June and has continued to excel at club level. Currently, he has played 15 games this season scoring once and providing one assist as his team lies 2nd on the league table. In Amavubi colors, Gueulette, who was a fringe player under previous coach Carlos Ferrer, was one of the key elements in Spittler's set up. He has used him in various positions such as False 9, on the wings, offensive midfield as well as his normal position which is central midfield. He would accomplish the mission anyway. ALSO READ: Rwanda's Gueulette nominated for player of the month at Belgian club Kevin Muhire (Offensive midfield) The Rayon Sports captain was named as the player of the season. Muhire joined the Blues in the middle of the 2023/24 season but he made a quick impact which saw him win the accolade. The Rwanda international carried on where he left off at the of the 2023/24 season and is continuing to take Rwanda Premier League by story as he leads the charts with eight assists before even the first round of the 2024/25 league campaign. On the international scene, he has been good with his most notable performances being against Nigeria in Kigali and South Sudan in Juba where he scored in Rwanda’s 3-2 loss in Sunday’s CHAN Qualifiers first leg. Jojea Kwizera (Right Attack) Kwizera joined USL club Rhode Island FC in January 2024 and went on to make 24 appearances, scoring three goals and providing five assists as his club reached the USL play off final. 2024 was also the year the US-based winger made his international football debut for Amavubi when they played against Benin in a 2026 World Cup qualifier in Abidjan on June 6. He scored his first Amavubi goal five days later against Lesotho in South Africa in the same qualifiers on June 11. Kwizera has been a regular starter for Spittler since his maiden call-up in June 2024. Innocent Nshuti (Centre forward) Nshuti had a torrid time at US third tier club One Knoxville SC as he failed to score or provide an assist in the whole 2024 season. He has not been able to impress his employers and is already considering a move out of the club by mutual consent. Despite the performance, Nshuti has a couple of offers on table to choose from with South African club Malumo Gallants leading the race to sign him. The former APR forward was, however, on fire in an Amavubi shirt, scoring some crucial goals in the AFCON 2025 qualifiers. He netted against Libya in Tripoli, Benin in Kigali and also Nigeria in Uyo. King Josias Furaha (Left Attack) Furaha was instrumental as FK Jerv qualified back to the Norwegian second tier league. He featured in 19 games and scored 7 goals as his side booked their place back to the second league. Furaha, who can operate anywhere upfront, was named in the Norwegian third tier team of the week four times. The 21-year-old forward could be a valuable addition to the Amavubi team as the World Cup qualifiers resume in.", "author": { "@type": "Person", "name": "Edmund Okai Gyimah" }, "publisher": { "@type": "Organization", "name": "The New Times", "url": "https://www.newtimes.co.rw/", "sameAs": ["https://www.facebook.com/TheNewTimesRwanda/","https://twitter.com/NewTimesRwanda","https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCuZbZj6DF9zWXpdZVceDZkg"], "logo": { "@type": "ImageObject", "url": "/theme_newtimes/images/logo.png", "width": 270, "height": 57 } }, "copyrightHolder": { "@type": "Organization", "name": "The New Times", "url": "https://www.newtimes.co.rw/" } }

Bolt enhances E-scooter alcohol test for holiday season safetyThese holiday gifts change the game when building fires, printing photos, watching birds and moreFlamenco is one of the musical delights of southern Spain. It developed out of folk traditions of the Gitano subculture of Andalusia and features dramatic guitar, singing and dancing, often supported by some kind of percussion, especially handclaps and castanets. The Gitanos are of Romani ethnicity and trace their ancestry to northern India. They migrated to Andalusia in the 15th century and were immediately exposed to the rich Arab-Andalusian musical culture that had developed from the 8th century and was a blend of North African, Arabic and Sephardic music. I spent time in my youth in Spain hitch-hiking around the south and later volunteered to carry a friend's recording equipment as she set to analyse the impact of Arabic on Andalusian Spanish. We spent weeks in my three favourite southern Spanish cities -- Seville, Cordoba and Granada. It was in Granada that I saw my first flamenco gigs, often in tiny cantinas among the hills. At that time in the 1970s, a golden generation of master guitarists and singers were active and had begun to create interesting fusions. Bands like Andalusian rockers Pata Negra, virtuoso Paco de Lucia (he really opened up major possibilities, adding Brazilian, jazz and Arabic music to his unique blend of flamenco) and the master singer Camaron de la Isla were gaining international recognition. Gitanos and flamenco suffered under the dictatorship of General Franco and many artists had to move or keep a very low profile. That changed as society opened up and eventually the country moved to a more democratic form of government. You can sample the history of flamenco from the 3 CD compilation Duende – From Traditional Masters To Gypsy Rock (The Passion & Dazzling Virtuosity Of Duende ), which released on the Ellipsis Arts label in 1994 and I believe was reviewed in the early days of this column. It's an essential compilation for any discerning music collection. Flamenco musicians have taken the music and further developed it into what is often called Nuevo Flamenco. Think of the surprising punk flamenco of singer Martirio or the wonderful band Ketama -- three flamenco musicians, Danny Thompson on electric bass and Toumani Diabate on the African kora -- which released two albums on the Hannibal label (well worth checking out). More recently, look out for the all-female quartet Las Migas. Another artist is the exiled Iranian singer Farnaz Ohadi who was unable to perform in Iran. After moving to Canada, she began formal musical studies, first in opera and Persian folk singing, and then singing flamenco with Farsi lyrics. Now based in Canada, she has released three albums, including Bird Dance in 2016. She seems to have developed a sub-genre of Flamenco, which she calls Persian Flamenco. You can sample her brilliant music on her new double album Breath (Aliento) , on which she is accompanied by guitarist Gaspar Rodriguez, who also produced the album. On CD 1, Hadi and Rodriguez explore different themes through songs, supported by a stellar cast of musicians playing everything from santurs to cellos to mandolas and bansuris. The music is layered and rich. The album kicks off with Anda Jaleo , which features Hadi's deep voice, and this segues into one of my favourite songs, the moving Andalusian-Arabic folk song Lama Bada , which resonates with call to prayer style Muslim vocals and Church bells and tells of someone yearning for their lover -- a really sad song. Another love song also that caught my attention was Erev , a Jewish folk tune, that features flute and harp. Garden Of Love is another standout. And there are surprises, too. The uptempo Bi Gharer is another unusual blend, a tango funk. This has a more contemporary feel than some of the other tracks, a smooth vibe driven by frame drum and al Andalus strings. CD 2 features mainly instrumental tracks, versions of tracks on CD1, although there is an outstanding song with vocals, Yar , a Persian folk song with flute. The liner notes describe how the first music conservatory was established in Cordoba 1,000 years ago by Zaryab, who travelled from the Persian Empire, thereby establishing Persian-Spain musical links that Fernaz Ohadi is exploring in her music. With perfect timing, as I write this column, the good folks at Afropop.org have an excellent radio show called The Hidden Blackness Of Flamenco.
