Crews were at the scene for what fire department spokesperson John Marsh said called a “fire watch.” “We are making sure all hot spots have been taken care of,” Marsh said. “Because we have winds, we want to ensure there aren’t any flareups.” As for an investigation, Marsh explained that much of the scene — along with any potential evidence of the fire’s origin — was compromised due to the use of heavy machinery used to clear debris and expose hot spots. However, Marsh said, an investigation into what caused the fire is still ongoing. “We are going to investigate it, but we are really going to look for any video and any testimony we could get before the fire,” Marsh said. The fire occurred around 5:15 p.m. Thursday night, illuminating the night sky of Baltimore’s Woodberry neighborhood as the city’s wood waste collection area burned. At least 12 engine companies, including units from Harford and Baltimore counties, fought the blaze through the night, bringing it under control Friday morning. Baltimore City Fire Chief James Wallace said the fire quickly spread and was “wind-driven.” Wallace said there were no reported injuries or evacuations. Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott said in a Friday afternoon news release that there was minimal property damage to Camp Small and no damage to the nearby Baltimore Gas and Electric Co. substation, light rail infrastructure, area schools or apartment buildings.
COPPER MOUNTAIN, Colo. (AP) — For a pair of lower-level downhill events, this sure had plenty of Olympic medal-capturing and World Cup-winning ski racers. The stage belonged to Lindsey Vonn , the 40-year-old who took another step on her comeback trail Saturday with her first races in nearly six years. Vonn wasn't particularly speedy and finished in the middle of the pack on a cold but sunny day at Copper Mountain. Times and places weren't the mission, though, as much as getting used to the speed again and gaining the necessary points to compete on the World Cup circuit this season. Vonn accomplished both, finishing 24th in the first downhill race of the day and 27th in the second. She posted on social media after the FIS races that she had enough points to enter World Cup events. The timing couldn't be more perfect — the next stop on the women's circuit is Beaver Creek, Colorado, in a week. Vonn, who used to own a home in nearby Vail, hasn't committed to any sort of timetable for a World Cup return. “Today was a solid start and I had a blast being in start with my teammates again!” Vonn wrote on X . “While I’m sure people will speculate and say I’m not in top form because of the results, I disagree. This was training for me. I’m still testing equipment and getting back in the groove.” Her competition — a veritable who's who of high-profile ski racers — applauded her efforts. “I don't expect her to come back and win — just that she comes back and she has fun,” said Federica Brignone of Italy, a former overall World Cup champion and three-time Olympic medallist. “She's having fun, and she’s doing what she loves. That’s the best thing that she could do.” In the first race on a frigid morning, Vonn wound up 1.44 seconds behind the winning time of 1 minute, 5.79 seconds posted by Mirjam Puchner of Austria. In her second race through the course later in the morning, Vonn was 1.53 seconds behind Cornelia Huetter of Austria, who finished in 1:05.99. Huetter is the reigning season-long World Cup downhill champion. “It’s really nice to compare with her again, and nice to have her (racing) again,” Huetter said. “For sure, for the skiing World Cup, we have a lot of more attention. It's generally good for all racers because everyone is looking.” Also in the field were Nadia Delago of Italy, who won a bronze medal in downhill at the 2022 Beijing Olympics, and Puchner, the Olympic silver winner in super-G in Beijing. In addition, there was Marta Bassino of Italy, a winner of the super-G at the 2023 world championships, and two-time Olympic champion Michelle Gisin of Switzerland. “For me, it was really a training, but it was fun to have a World Cup race level right here,” Gisin said. “It was a crazy race.” Vonn remains a popular figure and took the time after each run to sign autographs for young fans along with posing for photos. When she left the sport, Vonn had 82 World Cup race victories — including 18 in Lake Louise, Alta. — which stood as the record for a woman and within reach of the all-time Alpine record of 86 held by Swedish standout Ingemar Stenmark. The women’s mark held by Vonn was surpassed in January 2023 by Mikaela Shiffrin, who now has 99 wins — more than any alpine ski racer in the history of the sport. Shiffrin is currently sidelined after a crash in a giant slalom event in Killington, Vermont , last weekend. Vonn’s last major race was in February 2019, when she finished third in a downhill during the world championships in Sweden. The three-time Olympic medallist left the circuit still near the top of her game. But all the broken arms and legs, concussions and torn knee ligaments took too big a toll and sent her into retirement. She had a partial knee replacement last April and felt good enough to give racing another shot. “It's very impressive to see all the passion that Lindsey still has,” Gisin said. Also racing Saturday was 45-year-old Sarah Schleper, who once competed for the United States but now represents Mexico. Schleper was the next racer behind Vonn and they got a chance to share a moment between a pair of 40-somethings still racing. “I was like, ‘Give me some tips, Lindsey,’” Schleper said. “She’s like, ‘Oh, it’s a highway tuck, the whole thing.’ Then she’s like, ‘It’s just like the good old days.’" ___ AP skiing: https://apnews.com/hub/alpine-skiing Pat Graham, The Associated Press
BOSTON (AP) — Forty years ago, Heisman Trophy winner Doug Flutie rolled to his right and threw a pass that has become one of college football’s most iconic moments. With Boston College trailing defending champion Miami, Flutie threw the Hail Mary and found receiver Gerard Phalen , who made the grab while falling into the end zone behind a pair of defenders for a game-winning 48-yard TD. Flutie and many of his 1984 teammates were honored on the field during BC’s 41-21 victory over North Carolina before the second quarter on Saturday afternoon, the anniversary of the Eagles’ Miracle in Miami. “There’s no way its been 40 years,” Flutie told The Associated Press on the sideline a few minutes before he walked out with some of his former teammates to be recognized after a video of The Play was shown on the scoreboards. It’s a moment and highlight that’s not only played throughout decades of BC students and fans, but around the college football world. “What is really so humbling is that the kids 40 years later are wearing 22 jerseys, still,” Flutie said of his old number. “That amazes me.” That game was played on national TV the Friday after Thanksgiving. The ironic thing is it was originally scheduled for earlier in the season before CBS paid Rutgers to move its game against Miami, thus setting up the BC-Miami post-holiday matchup. “It shows you how random some things are, that the game was moved,” Flutie said. “The game got moved to the Friday after Thanksgiving, which was the most watched game of the year. We both end up being nationally ranked and up there. All those things lent to how big the game itself was, and made the pass and the catch that much more relevant and remembered because so many people were watching.” There’s a statue of Flutie winding up to make The Pass outside the north gates at Alumni Stadium. Fans and visitors can often be seen taking photos there. “In casual conversation, it comes up every day,” Flutie said, when asked how many times people bring it up. “It brings a smile to my face every time we talk about it.” A week after the game-ending Flutie pass, the Eagles beat Holy Cross and before he flew off to New York to accept the Heisman. They went on to win the 49th Cotton Bowl on New Year’s Day. “Forty years seem almost like incomprehensible,” said Phalen, also standing on the sideline a few minutes after the game started. “I always say to Doug: ‘Thank God for social media. It’s kept it alive for us.”’ Earlier this week, current BC coach Bill O’Brien, 55, was asked if he remembered where he was 40 years ago. “We were eating Thanksgiving leftovers in my family room,” he said. “My mom was saying a Rosary in the kitchen because she didn’t like Miami and wanted BC to win. My dad, my brother and I were watching the game. “It was unbelievable,” he said. “Everybody remembers where they were for the Hail Mary, Flutie pass.” Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. Gisele Bundchen believes there's "no perfect roadmap to follow" in lifeLearn about what makes Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte controversial to the Philippine people. Philippine Vice President Sara Duterte shockingly declared Saturday that she had contracted an assassin to kill the president, his wife and other top officials should she meet an untimely demise. Duterte warned in an online press conference that she is deadly serious and not joking about her threat to have President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. killed if something happens to her first. Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin referred the "active threat" against the president to an elite presidential guard force "for immediate proper action." The Presidential Security Command said it has "heightened and strengthened" Marcos' security protocols. "We are also closely coordinating with law enforcement agencies to detect, deter, and defend against any and all threats to the President and the First Family." Security officials are treating the threat – "made so brazenly in public" – with the "upmost seriousness." (AP Photo/Manman Dejeto) "We consider this a matter of national security and shall take all necessary measures to ensure the President’s safety," the command said. It is unclear what action, if any, will be taken against the vice president. Marcos and Duterte ran on the same ticket in the May 2022 elections and both were elected with landslide majorities after campaigning on national unity. But divisions over policy towards Chinese aggression in the disputed South China Sea and other key issues interrupted the honeymoon and led to a falling out between Marcos and Duterte. (AP Photo/Aaron Favila) Duterte, a populist, is the daughter of the equally controversial former President Rodrigo Duterte , a well-known critic of Marcos, his wife Liza Araneta-Marcos and House Speaker Martin Romualdez, the president's ally and cousin. Duterte has accused them of corruption, incompetence and political persecution of her family and supporters. Her threat to have Marcos killed came after House members allied with Romualdez and Marcos detained her chief of staff, Zuleika Lopez, who was accused of hampering a congressional inquiry into the possible misuse of her budget as vice president and education secretary. Lopez was later transferred to a hospital after falling ill, and wept when she heard of a plan to temporarily lock her up in a women’s prison, the Associated Press reported. Furious, Duterte held an online press conference Saturday and accused Marcos of incompetence as president and of being a liar, along with his wife and the House speaker, throwing several expletives at them in her remarks. When asked about concerns over her security, the 46-year-old lawyer suggested there was an unspecified plot to kill her. "Don’t worry about my security because I’ve talked with somebody. I said 'if I’m killed, you’ll kill BBM, Liza Araneta and Martin Romualdez. No joke, no joke,’" the vice president said without elaborating and using the initials that many use to call the president. Lately, whenever Boston and Minnesota square off, drama ensues. Sunday’s matchup at TD Garden was no different, with the Celtics surviving a furious Wolves comeback to win 107-105. Jaylen Brown’s 3-pointer with 76 seconds remaining proved to be the difference, capping a 29-point performance that also included Boston’s first 15 points of the game. Naz Reid had a chance to win it for Minnesota as time expired, but his three both missed the mark and did not leave his hand before the final buzzer. Jayson Tatum added 26 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two steals for Boston, which won its fifth straight to improve to 14-3. Derrick White finished with 19 points, nine rebounds, five assists, two blocks and a steal. Brown, Tatum and White combined to shoot 16-for-31 (51.6%) from 3-point range in the win. Anthony Edwards and Julius Randle scored 28 and 23 points, respectively, to lead the Timberwolves, who have not won in Boston since 2005. Rudy Gobert grabbed 20 rebounds — the most by a Celtics opponent this season — including eight offensive boards. Brown got off to a scorching start for the Celtics, drilling five 3-pointers on five shots in the first 3:14 of game time. The NBA Finals MVP hadn’t hit five threes in any full game since Boston’s season opener, and he reached that mark just four times all last season. With Brown’s hand hot, head coach Joe Mazzulla deviated from his typical early-game plan, giving Tatum a rest after eight minutes and playing Brown for the entire first quarter. Those roles have been flipped in most games this season, with Tatum playing the full opening frame in all but one contest before Sunday. Brown’s 5-for-5 start represented nearly all of Boston’s first-quarter offense, however. The team made just three of its other 18 field goals, and it took more than nine minutes for any other Celtics player to record a point. Minnesota led 27-24 after one. Tatum, held scoreless in the first, fueled Boston in the second quarter with 13 points on seven shots, including a second-chance 3-pointer off a Sam Hauser offensive rebound and a tough driving layup over reigning NBA Defensive Player of the Year Gobert. Al Horford also sank two threes in the quarter as the Celtics built a 10-point lead. But the Wolves scored the final nine points of the half, routinely exploiting one of the Celtics’ biggest weaknesses so far this season: rim protection. Minnesota went 11-for-13 inside the restricted area in the first half (and 10-for-36 on all other shots) and trailed 55-52 at halftime. That interior success kept the Wolves competitive for a half. But the Celtics’ 3-point barrage eventually became too much for the underdog visitors to handle. Boston made six threes in the first 6 1/2 minutes of the third quarter — three by Tatum; one each by Brown, Horford and Jrue Holiday — to open up a 19-point lead. The Celtics also blocked five Timberwolves shots in the quarter, including two rejections by White. Another of those came courtesy of Xavier Tillman, who saw his largest workload in weeks as Mazzulla shook up his frontcourt rotation. With Luke Kornet (hamstring tightness) inactive, Mazzulla used Tillman as Horford’s top backup rather than the struggling Neemias Queta. Tillman played 14 minutes, finishing with three points, four rebounds and one block. Queta, who came in averaging 22.5 minutes per game in November, was a healthy DNP for the first time since Oct. 26. The Celtics carried an 84-73 lead into the fourth quarter, then had to fend off a late Timberwolves charge led by backup guard Rob Dillingham, who hit two threes and a layup to help Minnesota close the gap. Edwards added two threes of his own after checking back in for Dillingham, and Jaden McDaniels’ driving baseline dunk with 2:04 remaining cut Boston’s lead to 104-102. But Brown’s three on the ensuing Celtics possession proved to be the game-winner, though he missed another shortly thereafter that could have iced the game. A Randle layup got Minnesota within two, but Reid couldn’t convert his would-be buzzer-beater.PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Former Temple basketball standout Hysier Miller sat for a long interview with the NCAA as it looked into concerns about his lawyer said Friday amid reports a federal probe is now under way. “Hysier Miller fully cooperated with the NCAA’s investigation. He sat for a five-hour interview and answered every question the NCAA asked. He also produced every document the NCAA requested,” lawyer Jason Bologna said in a statement. “Hysier did these things because he wanted to play basketball this season, and he is devastated that he cannot.” Miller, a three-year starter from South Philadelphia, transferred to Virginia Tech this spring. However, the Hokies released him last month due to what the program called “circumstances prior to his enrollment at Virginia Tech.” Bologna declined to confirm that a federal investigation had been opened, as did spokespeople for both the FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Philadelphia. ESPN, citing unnamed sources, reported Thursday that authorities were investigating whether Miller bet on games he played in at Temple, and whether he adjusted his performance accordingly. “Hysier Miller has overcome more adversity in his 22 years than most people face in their lifetime. He will meet and overcome whatever obstacles lay ahead," Bologna said. Miller scored eight points — about half his season average of 15.9 — in a 100-72 loss to UAB on March 7 that was later flagged for unusual betting activity. Temple said it has been aware of those allegations since they became public in March, and has been cooperative. “We have been fully responsive and cooperative with the NCAA since the moment we learned of the investigation,” Temple President John Fry said in a letter Thursday to the school community. However, Fry said Temple had not received any requests for information from state or federal law enforcement agencies. He vowed to cooperate fully if they did. “Coaches, student-athletes and staff members receive mandatory training on NCAA rules and regulations, including prohibitions on involvement in sports wagering," Fry said in the letter. The same week the Temple-UAB game raised concerns, Loyola (Maryland) said it had removed a person from its basketball program after it became aware of a gambling violation. Temple played UAB again on March 17, in the finals of the American Athletic Conference Tournament. League spokesman Tom Fenstermaker also declined comment on Friday. ___ Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. Sign up . I know everyone’s supposed to be super enthusiastic about Christmas. Not sure if it reflects my age, but I’m finding the relentless excess hype pretty unbearable. So much pressure to buy everyone a gift and then the desperation to find something, anything, to fit the bill. Occasionally, one does find the perfect present, but it takes time and lots of thought, something many of us don’t have much of these days. If truth be known, many presents are useless and may well be allocated to the regifting drawer, yet one really does want it to be a true token of friendship and love. So, this year, how about we have fun? And it can be fun making some edible presents that folks will really be thrilled to get. Something that will save them time, something they might not get around to making themselves, something they will really enjoy and that will remind them of you when they eat or drink it. So, this week, a few suggestions for the many edible treats one could choose. When I say treats, they don’t necessarily need to be sweet. Last Christmas, some busy young friends were absolutely thrilled to get a little selection of frozen homemade soups, a loaf of brown yeast bread and a stick of cultured Jersey butter. Wouldn’t you too be delighted to get a pot of delicious fish and shellfish chowder or a fish pie, with a mashed potato topping or a chunky chicken and ham pie with a puff pastry crust? It could be a few sweet sauces to drizzle over an ice cream or pancakes for an instant pudding. Kumquats will be in season, so how about some kumquat marmalade, the most delicious of all things to slather on your breakfast toast . As some foods become progressively less tasty, condiments of all kinds, spicy, fiery or just plain tasty become ‘must-haves’ in your pantry so a little hamper of Christmas relishes and sweet and savoury jams become even more essential. Every bite will remind your friend of the meaningful present that you really put your heart into. Could be just a little cellophane pack of their favourite ‘cookies’ and now I’m back to my favourite theme... Gather the family around for ‘Bake Up Sunday’, if they don’t seem enthusiastic about cooking, maybe they can wrap, make pretty labels, tie bows, maybe make packs of mulled wine spices. I’m on the lookout for all kinds of recycled jars, pots and baskets during the year in charity shops. I pick up all manner of glass, pottery, and clay containers and save them for Christmas. They can be made super-cool, even with newspaper or parchment lids and fancy twine, ribbon or tinsel and a sprig of rosemary or holly. Here are some suggestions. The Chocolate Florentines come from Jane Lovett’s ‘The Get-Ahead Christmas Cook’, a new book to look out for published by Headline Publishing Group. There are lots and lots of ideas in my ‘A Simply Delicious Christmas’, published by Gill Books, which some of you may already have. No introduction needed really, other than to say these are far easier than you may think and make lovely (and impressive!) presents – who doesn’t love a florentine? Servings Course Ingredients 50g butter 60g demerara sugar 60g flaked almonds 30g unsalted, shelled pistachios, roughly chopped 50g dried (pitted) dates or figs, roughly chopped 50g dried cherries or cranberries (or a mixture of the two), roughly chopped 50g mixed candied peel 1 piece of stem ginger in syrup, drained and chopped (optional) 15g plain flour 1 tbsp double cream 150-200g dark chocolate (minimum 70 per cent cocoa solids), broken into pieces icing sugar, for dusting (optional) Method Preheat the oven to 180°C (160°C fan)/Gas Mark 4. Line two baking sheets with baking parchment or silicone paper. Melt the butter and demerara sugar together in a pan on a gentle heat. Set aside. Mix all the nuts, fruit, candied peel and stem ginger (if using) together in a mixing bowl, then add the flour and stir to coat. Stir in the cream into the butter mixture, then pour this over the dry ingredient and mix well to combine. Dot heaped teaspoons of the mixture onto the lined baking sheets, leaving a little space for spreading during cooking. Flatten each one with the back of a teaspoon, trying to avoid holes as best you can, then bake for 8-12 minutes or until golden brown. Leave on the baking sheets for 3-5 minutes or until firmed up, then transfer to a wire rack using a palette knife and leave to cool. Repeat to make the remainder, if necessary. Melt the chocolate in a small, heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water, or in a microwave on high in 30-second bursts. Put a sheet of baking parchment or silicone paper under the wire rack to catch any drips of chocolate. When cold, turn the florentines over with their flat underside now uppermost. With a teaspoon, a small palette knife or brush, spread a layer of melted chocolate over each florentine and leave until the chocolate is cold and set hard, around an hour or so, or chill. If you like, just before the chocolate fully sets, mark a swirly, wavy pattern with a fork. (Scrape up the excess dripped chocolate and use for something else). Arrange the florentines overlapping on a plate, alternating the chocolate and fruit and nut sides uppermost, or store in an airtight container until required. A light dusting of icing sugar just before serving looks pretty too. Recipe from Jane Lovett’s The Get-Ahead Christmas Cook published by Headline Publishing Group recipe by: Darina Allen A perfect stocking-filler for a foodie friend who likes to add a little extra oomph to everything - carry it in your handbag to perk up bland dishes... Course Ingredients 110g flaky sea salt 2 tbsp crushed dried chilli pepper (Jalapeno or Habanero) 1 tsp freshly cracked black pepper Method Mix the salt and chilli together and whizz for a couple of seconds in a food processor or a molcajete with a pestle and mortar. Fill into little airtight glass containers. recipe by: Darina Allen Once again, salted caramel sauce is irresistible drizzled over crêpes, ice cream or bananas and keeps for weeks in a jar in the fridge. Makes three jars. Course Ingredients 600ml (3x 200g jars) 450g caster sugar 125g unsalted whole butter (diced) 250ml double cream 10g Achill or Dingle sea salt (literally flower of the salt, the very mineral and not too salty top layer) or Maldon Sea salt. Method Put the caster sugar into a large pan over a medium heat and stir continuously until it turns into a rich caramel. You need to do this by eye but aim for a dark mahogany colour. If it is too light, the butter and cream will dilute any caramel flavour, and it will lack that slightly burnt sugar taste that makes this sauce so good. When you are happy with the caramel, very carefully whisk in the cream to stop the cooking. Be really careful not to do it too quickly as the caramel has a tendency to spit. When you have whisked in the cream, add the butter bit by bit until it’s all incorporated and you have a smooth rich caramel. Allow to cool to 37°C and then stir in the sea salt and mix so you get an even distribution. It is very important to allow the caramel to cool before doing this so that the salt crystals do not dissolve, and you then get that lovely crunch. Still, at least Manchester City can now concentrate on the Ballon d’Or. There was a lavish celebration for the world’s best player before this game: the word RODRI illuminated in giant letters on the pitch like a Vegas cabaret show, City’s injured midfield linchpin holding his trophy aloft as fireworks lit the night sky. The tailoring was immaculate; the audiovisuals impressive; the crowd rapt. And then came a game of football, in which by a team with Radu Dragusin and Ben Davies at centre-half. It was City’s biggest home defeat in more than two decades: the sort of result that draws small involuntary gasps, that causes spectators to get their phones out and zoom in on the scoreboard, capturing for posterity this curious rip in the space‐time fabric. What it was not, however, was a shock. At least, not for anyone more than vaguely acquainted with City’s football over recent weeks. A fifth consecutive loss – six if you count the Premier League vote on associated party transactions on Friday – is of less significance than the recurring manner of those losses: City being undone not by fluke or happenstance but by teams who were simply braver than them, stronger, more imaginative, more united. And yes, City keep getting done on the counterattack. But just as relevant as the counterattack is what comes before and after: the limp and uncoordinated efforts to win the ball back, the reluctant and rote shuffling back into position, second and third runners not being picked up, the 50-50s not being won. These are issues not of tactics or shape but of conditioning, physical and mental. Nor is this simply a Rodri problem, as brilliant a player as he is, as yawning the gaps were in midfield here as Tottenham poured forward with numbers. The malaise here is collective: witness the first goal, as a puffing Ilkay Gündogan simply lets James Maddison go, delegating what should have been his job with an urgent outstretched arm that nobody sees. But Josko Gvardiol also lets Dejan Kulusevski cut inside, the centre-halves fail to space correctly, and there was insufficient pressure on the ball to begin with. The common theme here: everyone is relying on someone else to bail them out. There is a sense of shirked responsibility here, of leaving the extra yard to others. Again with the second goal in the 20th minute, Gvardiol with the slack pass to Gündogan, nobody covering Maddison’s reverse run. Again with the third, Kulusevski simply shrugging off Phil Foden, City players bumping into each other like Minions, Spurs tearing up the field and scoring again. No champion team should ever be this fatally reliant on a single man. Pep Guardiola has found solutions in the past and will doubtless find them again. But right now he needs his players to step up. Since his sparkling start to the season Erling Haaland has scored two goals in his last seven league games, from an xG of 7.8. In short, he is basically finishing about as well as you would with his chances at the moment. What this means, on the other hand, is anyone’s guess. Is this an implosion? The end of an era? Or basically the characteristic autumn blip from a team who are still second in the league and will probably still romp to the title by five points? In short, are the ones overthinking this? Maybe. Certainly Guardiola was in bullish mood after this game, assuring us this group of players were still champion footballers, that he still had everything he needed to turn this around. But even if this run of results is unprecedented, there have been enough portents – Wolves, Fulham, Inter, Arsenal – to suggest this is a trend rather than an anomaly. Guardiola talks a lot about his trophies these days. He rarely misses an opportunity to blazon what this team have achieved, to celebrate and revel in their dominance. And, you know, fair enough. But perhaps it is also the hallmark of a regime increasingly preoccupied with projection, with how things look and are portrayed. The timing of his new contract announcement, which frankly could have happened any time between now and May. The legal battle with the Premier League, the furious briefings, the litany of documentaries and content, a Ballon d’Or celebration immediately before a key league game. Of course a little aura and hubris is no bad thing. But it needs to be tied to fundamentals. Right now, those fundamentals are absent. What remains is a club being run on vibes and past glories, a team that basically looks a little drunk right now on its own imperial grandeur. Perhaps this is not yet the time to burn things down and start again. Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella changed his cleats just 12 minutes into the game after his slips contributed to both of Tottenham's early goals in the teams' London derby in the Premier League on Sunday. The Spain international ceded possession by slipping on the turf at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the fifth and 11th minutes — and from the ensuing attacks, Spurs scored through Dominic Solanke and Dejan Kulusevski. Immediately after Kulusevski's shot hit the net to make it 2-0, Cucurella sprinted to the sideline while shrugging his shoulders and pointed to his cleats. He took them off and threw them away in disgust before putting on new ones. It seemed to work. Within six minutes, he provided the pass that led to Jadon Sancho scoring for Chelsea to make it 2-1. Chelsea went on to win 4-3 — and Cucurella on social media after the match, showing the first cleats he wore nestled in a bin. “It almost slipped away,” Cucurella wrote on Instagram Stories, “but proud of the amazing team effort to turn things around.” AP soccer:The Manufacturers Life Insurance Company Purchases 7,783 Shares of Vertiv Holdings Co (NYSE:VRT)JACKSON, Miss. SBS is set to have a new home in Western Sydney after the federal government announced funding to expand the multicultural broadcaster's production facilities. The government will provide an upfront investment of $5.9 million to enable SBS to start work on finding a site to expand its news and current affairs, multilingual audio services and screen production. Communications Minister Michelle Rowland said the new production hub would feature a TV studio able to host live audiences, radio and podcasting booths, collaboration spaces for talent incubation, and a workspace to support production output. 'Contradictory views': How Australians feel about migration and multiculturalism Once established, it would enable SBS to deliver approximately 360 hours per year of new first-run Australian screen content and 1,440 hours per year of original audio and podcast content — including multilingual content. Rowland said the move would create opportunities for local, skilled production jobs in an area where 40 per cent of the population are born overseas. An initial feasibility study focused on a full relocation of SBS from its headquarters in Artarmon, in Sydney’s north, but the government opted not to pursue it due to the significant cost. 'A fantastic vote of confidence' SBS managing director James Taylor said the funding announcement was "a fantastic vote of confidence by the minister and the government in the value of SBS, and the work we do in service of all Australians". "The board and I are delighted that the government has committed to supporting SBS to establish itself permanently in Western Sydney, which will enable us to bring even more distinctive stories to all Australians," he said. Rowland thanked the SBS board and management "for their initiative in proposing this exciting project" and said she "look[s] forward to working with them to bring it to fruition". "As Australia's dedicated multicultural and First Nations broadcaster and one of our most trusted news brands, SBS plays a vital role in promoting social cohesion," she said. "SBS connects with multilingual, multicultural and First Nations communities, including in Western Sydney, and is vital to bringing diverse voices to Australian audiences." Source: AAP / Lukas Coch SBS board chair George Savvides AM said that SBS' creation of content "content with communities, especially those who are under-represented in the Australian media, those communities feel more included in society". "With SBS turning 50 next year, what better way to celebrate than to expand our storytelling capability and infrastructure." "The SBS board is delighted at the opportunity to embed SBS within Western Sydney, and to keep growing SBS' contribution to social cohesion through community access to trusted, impartial media and even greater opportunities for local communities to be part of our diverse storytelling." Steps towards the west Scoping work for the Western Sydney project will commence shortly and include engaging with local and industry stakeholders to identify an appropriate site and a commercial expression of interest process in which parties such as local councils will have the opportunity to present options, Taylor said. "There will be a range of factors considered, including proximity to services and transport, and I will share more as we develop the details," he said. "This is very early days, and the first step is to complete the work required to identify the full costs involved for establishing the production hub and the additional content. We expect to kick off the project early in the new year and be out in market looking for a site in the first half of 2025. "I anticipate that we will be in a position to present a completed business case to government in late 2025, and following approval of the business case, construction of the facility would be ready to commence."Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has reportedly fled the country following the rapid advance of rebel forces into Damascus, marking a significant turning point in the nation’s 14-year-long civil war. Russia’s foreign ministry confirmed Sunday that Assad resigned from his position and left Syria, instructing the government to ensure a peaceful transfer of power, as mentioned in a report by Forbes. According to Moscow, Assad engaged in discussions with various factions involved in the conflict before making the decision to step down. However, Russia emphasized that it was not a participant in these negotiations. “Following talks between Bashar al-Assad and a range of conflict participants within Syria, he decided to resign as President and leave the country, giving instructions to facilitate a peaceful transition of power,” the Russian foreign ministry stated, as quoted in a report by Hindustan Times. Celebrations Erupt as Assad’s Regime Collapses The end of Assad’s decades-long rule sparked widespread celebrations across Syria. In Damascus, citizens toppled statues of Assad’s late father, Hafez al-Assad, a symbol of the regime’s 50-year grip on the nation. Similar scenes were reported in Aleppo, where residents dismantled statues of both Hafez and Bassel al-Assad, Bashar’s late brother. In Daraa, often referred to as the cradle of Syria’s 2011 uprising, rebel fighters were seen dragging a toppled statue of Hafez al-Assad through the streets. Images of jubilant Syrians ransacking presidential palaces, including the Al-Rawda Palace and Muhajreen Palace, also emerged, with furniture and ornate decorations being carried away by mobs. Rebel Forces Take Control The rebel coalition, spearheaded by the group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, launched a swift offensive that began with the capture of Aleppo and culminated in the seizure of Damascus. The group announced its intention to work with Syrian Prime Minister Mohammad Ghazi al-Jalali, who is expected to oversee public institutions temporarily. Al-Jalali, in a statement, confirmed that he had not spoken to Assad since Saturday. He expressed his commitment to cooperating with the new leadership to stabilize the country during this transitional period, as mentioned in the Hindustan Times report. The Assad Legacy Bashar al-Assad inherited power in 2000 following the death of his father, Hafez al-Assad, who rose to leadership through a 1970 coup. For decades, the Assad family maintained a firm grip on Syria, characterized by allegations of oppression and suppression of dissent. The civil war, which erupted in 2011 after peaceful protests against Assad’s regime were violently quashed, has left the country in ruins, claiming hundreds of thousands of lives and displacing millions. The dramatic fall of the Assad regime raises questions about Syria’s future and the international community’s role in its reconstruction. As celebrations continue, the nation braces for what lies ahead in this new chapter of its history. What’s Next for Syria? While Bashar al-Assad’s departure signals the end of an era, the path to rebuilding Syria is fraught with challenges. Rebel leaders and international actors must now navigate a delicate transition to restore stability and address the humanitarian crisis left in the wake of the civil war. FAQs Who runs Syria now? The position has been vacant since December 8, 2024, following the overthrow of former president Bashar al-Assad after the success of the 2024 Syrian opposition offensives. What is the currency of Syria? The Syrian Pound (SYP), symbolized by £, serves as the official currency of Syria. (You can now subscribe to our Economic Times WhatsApp channel )
