Women more likely to need walking aids but less likely to use them – studyBCRC Mentorship Program marks its 10th anniversaryEight TDs have been elected to Dáil Éireann as first counts have come in from across the country. You can keep up to date with all the General Election results throughout the weekend through Newstalk’s live blog and video stream. Fine Gael's Jennifer Carroll MacNeill in the Dun Laoghaire constituency was the first TD deemed elected, followed by her party member Patrick O'Donovan in Limerick County. Sinn Féin's David Cullinane in Waterford became the third elected TD. He has since been joined by party members Eoin O'Broin in Dublin Mid-West and Paul Donnelly in the Dublin West constituency. Fianna Fáil leader Tánaiste Micheál Martin and Finance Minister Jack Chambers have also been re-elected. Verona Murphy in Wexford is currently the only Independent TD elected to the next Dail. In Dublin Central, Gerry Hutch has finished 4th and will have to face a transfer battle with Labour's Marie Sherlock if he wants to stay in the race. The Greens aren't quite conceding total defeat - but party leader Roderic O'Gorman is the only one in the running for a seat. It also looks as though the exit poll understated Fianna Fáil support and overstated Sinn Féin. However at this stage it's still too hard to call between the three largest parties. Newstalk reporters will be at count centres around Ireland bringing you all the results as they come in. We will also be running election specials throughout today and tomorrow, and you can follow all the action on our live blog and on our social channels. With reporting by Seán Defoe.

The analysis found new medicines led to 3.75 million additional years of full health, costing £75 billion. Offsetting NHS funding from existing services to pay for expensive new drugs could be harming the health of the nation, a study suggests. The cost of innovative new medicines “do not always justify the benefits they offer”, researchers warned. They suggest England’s pharmaceutical pricing policy should be reformed “to better serve the health needs” of all NHS patients. However, NHS spending watchdog the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (Nice) said its role is “vital”, with it helping to prevent a “postcode lottery” in patient access and potentially higher costs. The study, led by academics at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), looked at how many additional years of full health were generated by drugs approved by Nice between 2000 and 2020. The analysis found new medicines led to 3.75 million additional years of full health, costing £75 billion. However, it suggests that redirecting that funding to existing services could have generated five million years of full health. Researchers said that while new drugs “could have benefited patients who received them” access “came at a considerable cost for others who might have missed out on potential health gains due to necessary disinvestment or underinvestment in other forms of care to fund these newly recommended drugs”. Lead author Huseyin Naci, associate professor of health policy at the LSE, added: “New drugs can be a lifeline for patients who have significant unmet clinical needs. “However, innovative drugs are expensive, and their costs do not always justify the benefits they offer.” Academics said the findings relate to Nice’s cost-effectiveness threshold and suggest it should be lowered. Nice advises its committees to consider new drugs as offering value for money to the NHS if they cost less than £20,000 to £30,000 per additional year of full health gained. Prof Naci added: “After more than a decade of underinvestment in the NHS, it may no longer be justifiable to have a Nice threshold that doesn’t reflect the amount the NHS needs to spend to generate health. “Lowering the threshold would allow the NHS to negotiate better prices for new medicines, taking into account not only the benefits to patients receiving these drugs but also the impact on other NHS users who may lose out due to resource reallocation.” Irene Papanicolas, professor of health services, policy and practice at Brown University, said the findings, published in The Lancet, “are reflective of the tight budget of the NHS”. “In this environment, offsetting funding from existing services to pay high prices for new drugs can more adversely affect population health than in health systems where there is greater budgetary flexibility,” she added. Beth Woods, senior research fellow at Centre for Health Economics at University of York, said: “This work shows that there is a need to reform pharmaceutical pricing policy in England to better serve the health needs of all patients served by the NHS.” A spokesperson for Nice said the spending watchdog’s role is “vital” and helps prevent a postcode lottery. “Spending money on new medicines does create an opportunity cost, displacing services elsewhere in the health system,” they said. “That’s why Nice’s role is vital: we carefully evaluate new treatments and recommend only those that offer value-for-money for the taxpayer. “This is especially important during times of significant challenge to the NHS. Every pound of the NHS budget can only be spent once. “If Nice had not recommended these innovative new medicines, they almost certainly would have been used within the NHS anyway. “Without Nice’s input, funding decisions would be taken locally, leading to inequitable patient access – the ‘postcode lottery’ – and potentially higher costs, because multiple local negotiations with pharmaceutical companies may not drive best value for the NHS.”

Georgia Tech looks to break out of funk, meets Alabama A&MAn emotion-packed rivalry game between Ohio State and Michigan turned into an emotion-filled fight at midfield after Wolverines players planted their flag in the middle of the Block O at midfield. Following their 13-10 win over the Buckeyes, their fourth consecutive win over their archrival, Michigan edge rusher Derrick Moore attempted a repeat of what Baker Mayfield did years ago when he was at Oklahoma and planted their flag at midfield, which led to a massive brawl. Ohio State players making their way off the field saw the display and immediately charged into the mass of Michigan players and coaches. Several police officers had to intervene, and many players were pepper sprayed during the melee. Order was eventually restored after several minutes of skirmishing, but the final shoe at “The Shoe” is yet to drop. Michigan won the game and will go on to play a bowl game. The Buckeyes will head to the College Football Playoff as an at-large bid. However, after the Big 10 reviews the tape of the fight after the game, several Buckeyes players are likely to face suspensions due to their role in the fray, which could mean multiple Ohio State players will miss at least a half, if not the entirety of their first-round playoff game.

LONDON — Over 100 art workers gathered outside Tate Britain on Tuesday evening, December 3, during the ceremony for the 2024 Turner Prize, to protest against the institution’s ties to groups connected to Israeli military interests. Inside the museum, artist and Turner Prize winner Jasleen Kaur took to the stage and expressed solidarity with the protesters and the Palestinian cause. “I want the separation between the expression of politics in the gallery and the practice of politics in life to disappear,” Kaur said, addressing attendees. “I want the institution to understand: If you want us inside, you need to listen to us outside. Ceasefire now, arms embargo now, free Palestine.” Outside, activist groups including Artists + Culture Workers, Artistsʼ Union England, Boycott Zabludowicz, Goldsmiths for Palestine, Strike Outset, University for the Arts London (UAL) Students for Justice in Palestine, and Workers for a Free Palestine demanded that Tate cut ties with organizations and companies they say are financially supporting or helping “artwash” Israel’s attacks on Gaza and the Occupied West Bank — including Barclays, Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HP), Outset Contemporary Art Fund, the Zabludowicz Art Trust , and Zabludowicz Art Projects. Get the latest art news, reviews and opinions from Hyperallergic. Daily Weekly Opportunities “The art sector leans progressive, and yet institutions are stuck on this [issue],” said Zarina Muhammad, White Pube art critic, speaking during the protest. “They are the ones with all the money, they are the ones with all the resources, all the power, and yet we have to tell them how to act.” A selection of artworks from the Gaza Biennale , a roaming exhibition of 60 artists in and from Gaza was projected on Tate Britainʼs exterior walls. “Art exists to express the pain of this world and the dream of a different one,” another speaker, historian and organizer Barnaby Raine, told the crowd. “We know that creative spirit, that refuses to accept that the violence of this world is all there is, that there can be something better, we know that spirit is carried by the artists of Gaza.” Significantly outnumbered by the pro-Palestine rally, a small Israel-supporting counter-protest of around 25 people held signs that read “Don’t let Hamas kidnap our culture.” The group dissipated after a while. Tate has not yet responded to Hyperallergic ’s request for comment. The protest came in the wake of a report released by the United Nations Special Committee last month that found Israel’s warfare methods in Gaza “consistent with genocide, including use of starvation as a weapon of war.” Also in November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, former Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, and Hamas commander Mohammed Deif. A judge found that Netanyahu and Gallant bore “criminal responsibility” for “the war crime of intentionally directing an attack against the civilian population” in Gaza. The protest also followed an open letter addressed to Tate last week calling on the institution to cut ties with Outset and Zabludowicz Art and to “take a clear stance against the artwashing of genocide and apartheid.” The missive has been signed by more than 1,200 artists and cultural workers, including 2024 Turner Prize nominees Pio Abad and Claudette Johnson and winner Jasleen Kaur. Also among the signatories were previous Turner Prize winners Jesse Darling, Tai Shani, Lawrence Abu Hamdan, and Helen Cammock; Palestinian artist Jumana Manna; and artists Sophia Al Maria, Rene Matić, and Hannah Black. Since 1990, Zabludowicz Collection co-founder Poju Zabludowicz has been the CEO of the private real estate investment company Tamares Group, which the letter says has provided telecommunication infrastructure for Israeli settlements considered illegal under international law, including several on privately owned Palestinian land. Hyperallergic has contacted the Zabludowicz Collection for comment. The letter also takes issue with the Outset Contemporary Art Fund, which provides funding support for Tate acquisitions , over Outset’s corporate partnership with the Israeli diamond company Leviev, accused of human rights abuses . Leviev’s founder, Lev Leviev, is accused of profiting from illegal settlements in the West Bank. Earlier this year, the campaign group Strike Outset drew attention to the fact that the co-founder of the Outset Contemporary Art Fund, Candida Gertler, and her husband Zak are close friends of Benjamin Netanyahu and hosted his 70th birthday party at their Tel Aviv home in 2019. According to the letter, Candida Gertler and Anita and Poju Zabludowicz have been members of Tate’s International Council since at least 2008, and Gertler has been an executive member of the committee for over a decade. On November 29, four days after the letter was published, Gertler announced her resignation from Outset Contemporary Art Fund and all voluntary positions within United Kingdom arts institutions with immediate effect. In a statement , Strike Outset said it was “a win for our movement — but our campaign continues,” adding, “This is structural, not personal.” The boycott, the group said, would remain in place “until Outset Contemporary Art Fund closes its Israel chapter, and cuts all ties with the Israeli occupation.” We hope you enjoyed this article! It’s a cold reality for many retirees. According to the Life Cycle Hypothesis , this shouldn’t need to happen. A retiree who is financially prepared for retirement should keep a consistent income in retirement, and her overall consumption should not change. Recommended Videos Who Is Struggling to Spend Their Retirement Income? About 25% of retirees fall into the camp of people who decrease spending during retirement. Moreover, research suggests this problem may worsen. Researchers found that the issue was most pronounced with individuals who use their own savings for retirement income—whereas people with guaranteed sources of income, such as annuities , Social Security , and pensions, were more likely to spend their income. Why Do People Have Trouble Shifting From a Saving to Spending Mindset? One line of thinking posits that people simply don’t need to spend as much in retirement. For example, when people retire, they may experience a drop in work-related expenses. They may be able to spend more time doing things they had to pay for in the past—now making meals at home or mowing their own lawn—and searching for the best deals for their purchases. And they may pay off their mortgage , thus decreasing their expenses. Another line of thought points to more psychological reasons behind a change in spending patterns. Before retirement, a person may be more susceptible to present bias (the tendency to focus more on the present situation at the expense of long-term planning) because their future labor income is uncertain, and they don’t yet feel an ownership of that money. That uncertainty gives them the flexibility to think things like, “I’ll work more hours next month to make up for this trip,” or “My boss will cough up that bonus soon.” However, after retirement, they are on a fixed income and the money they are spending is coming from their own pocket. This shift triggers loss aversion—that is, the desire to avoid losses outweighs the desire to experience gains. In retirement, we know that overspending today will result in a sure loss in future consumption. In a world where that future you is 85 years old and unable to work, that future loss looms much larger than an extra extravagance today. How to Manage Retirement Spending Woes Every retiree is different, and different explanations may ring true based on their personal circumstances, so retirees may benefit from taking stock of their retirement spending. Start by gauging your financial affairs and have a clear understanding of how much you can spend. Try tracking your spending using an online tool that breaks down spending by category. It’s ideal to do this before you retire, but not essential. On a quarterly basis, check your overall spending and take note of any categories where your spending patterns have changed. Do these changes align with your financial goals? Did your spending on eating out suddenly drop, even though you love trying new cuisines with friends? The Pieces to the Retirement Income Puzzle If you fall into the underspending camp, research suggests that people using guaranteed income sources are more willing to spend their income. If you don’t want to take the leap to guaranteed income sources, try reframing your retirement income as a paycheck that someone else is paying you. Although not spending enough money in retirement may not be a universal problem, it does represent a huge, missed opportunity for the retirees in question. It’s important to remember that this is the money you’ve spent years toiling over and protecting. Now, during a long and happy retirement, is the time to put that money and free time to good use, funneling both resources into your version of a life well-lived. —- This article was provided to The Associated Press by Morningstar.
