Prime Minister Anthony Albanese remains marginally more popular than opposition leader Peter Dutton, but Labor is losing support to the Coalition in the nation’s two most populous states, according to the latest polling. A survey by Resolve Strategic for the Sydney Morning Herald shows that Mr Albanese has kept his personal edge over Mr Dutton by 38 to 36 per cent in NSW and 36 to 34 per cent in Victoria, and by wafer thin margin of 37 to 36 per cent nationally. However, the findings echo other recent polling that reflects voter disillusionment with the Labor party in the crucial states of Victoria and NSW, with a further strong swing against it in Western Australia — raising the risk that the current Government could lose its majority. The data revealed the Government’s primary votes had dropped from 33 to 29 per cent in both NSW and Victoria since the last election, with Victorian voters giving the Coalition its biggest boost in support since the 2022 election among the mainland states. The trend in Victoria has raised the Coalition’s primary vote from 33 to 38 per cent, while NSW voters have increased their Coalition support from 37 to 38 per cent. The results will mean Labor must stage a dramatic turnaround in next year’s poll, due by May 17, to win key electorates. The Government will pitch its promise that the cost-of-living crisis will ease in a second term. “A lot of Australians who’ll be pleased to see the back of 2024 can now be a bit more optimistic about the future,” Treasurer Jim Chalmers told The Australian in an end-of-year interview. These were the areas where lower income constituents who were “feeling the pinch the most” lived in the greatest number, explained Mr Samaras. “This is where people have basically been forced to buy homes which they probably can’t afford, that they were able to afford when interest rates were very low,” he said. “And if they were to try to buy the same home now, with the current interest rate levels, they’d be unlikely to get the loan they need,” he added. The latest Resolve Strategic poll also shows a dramatic fall in support for Labor in Western Australia, where a ten per cent swing was crucial to its last electoral victory in 2022. The survey shows Labor down from 37 to 30 per cent since the election, and that the federal Coalition has increased its support in the state from 35 to 37 per cent. Resolve director Jim Reed told the SMH that the latest results confirmed his view that Labor would lose its majority at the election unless there was a significant change in popular support in the months ahead. “We’ve seen in recent years, here and abroad, that the axioms of politics no longer hold true,” he said. “A lot of modern polling is about having the flexibility and ability to look at things that have never happened before. “In 2022, we correctly anticipated that Labor would win with less than a third of the primary vote, that they would pick up seats in Western Australia, that the Greens would win seats in Brisbane, and that Liberal heartland would be taken by the teals. “This time around we’ll be looking for things that go against the received wisdom, like the possibility of a first-term government being voted out, the Liberals winning seats in Victoria, the Greens losing seats and independents being denied a second term.”

The motion is expected to be introduced on Thursday and the debate and vote are set for Monday. Singh says he is not going to vote non-confidence and trigger an election when he believes Poilievre would cut programs the NDP fought for, like dental care and pharmacare. The non-confidence vote was scheduled after Speaker Greg Fergus intervened to pause a filibuster on a privilege debate about a green technology fund. The Conservatives have said they would only end that debate if the NDP agree to topple the government or if the Liberals turn over unredacted documents at the centre of the parliamentary gridlock.

However, one player who intended to enter has found himself in an unusual and unresolved situation. Wisconsin cornerback Xavier Lucas announced his plans to transfer earlier this month, yet the Badgers have reportedly refused to release him into the portal. The situation remains unclear, but it has drawn significant attention as the Dec. 28 portal closing deadline approaches. Lucas took to social media on Friday to address the matter. “I still intend to transfer, but at the moment Wisconsin is refusing to release me into the transfer portal,” Lucas said. “I’ve met all NCAA requirements of the transfer portal process. I’ve yet to be put into the transfer portal by Wisconsin, which is impeding my ability to speak with schools.” This scenario is unprecedented in the transfer portal era. A drop in school enrollment caused by low birthrates led to the closure of 14 educational institutions in Taiwan this year, statistics released by the Ministry of Education showed. The ministry said that the closed down institutions consisted of nine elementary schools, a junior-high school and four higher-learning schools. Of the elementary schools, four were in Taoyuan, one in Kaohsiung, one in Nantou County and three in Pingtung County. The ministry also cited the building of the Taoyuan Aerotropolis as another reason the four elementary schools in the city closed. The only junior-high school to close its doors this year was a school in Penghu County. Meanwhile, the four institutions of higher learning that shut down were Kaohsiung’s Tung Fang Design University, Changhua County’s MingDao University, Chiayi City’s Tatung Institute of Commerce and Technology, and Yunlin County’s TransWorld University. The four schools ceased taking in new admissions last year, in accordance with the Act Governing the Closure of Private Educational Institutions at Senior Secondary or Higher Level (私立高級中等以上學校退場條例), the ministry said. At the time of the schools’ enrollment suspension, the universities together employed 428 faculty and staff to service 673 students, it added. Aside from I-Kuan Tao College in Kaohsiung, no higher-education school is at risk of closure from next year to 2026, the ministry said, adding that the college had applied to close by next year, but the request would still need to be deliberated before it is approved. Eight high schools stopped accepting admissions this year, so they are likely to close in the a few years, the ministry said. Data from the Ministry of the Interior in October showed that the nation’s population was 23,404,138 as of September, down 2,470 from August, the ninth consecutive month this year that the nation has reported a drop. There were 11,792 births in September, or 3.7 births per day, up 149 from August, it said, adding that the monthly birthrate was 6.15 per 1,000 people. The jurisdictions with the highest birthrates were Yunlin County at 14.62 per 1,000 people, Penghu County at 8.61 per 1,000 and Taoyuan at 7.74 per 1,000, the interior ministry said.
