Researchers from UNSW Sydney and the University of Sydney examined the wellbeing of 68 Tamil children aged 10 to 18 and their mothers who sought asylum in Australia over a decade ago. A 43-year-old Tamil mother of two, who participated in the study but declined to give her name for fear of jeopardising her citizenship application, said it was a long struggle to feel stable. The woman boarded a ramshackle boat in 2012, along with about 70 other asylum seekers, carrying her nine-month-old baby and eight-year-old son and landing on Cocos Islands - remote Australian territories near Indonesia. She and her young sons were detained in several immigration detention centres for a year including Christmas Island. The woman was escaping civil war in Sri Lanka, where her husband still remains missing. After more than 12 years of visa insecurity, she is finally applying for her citizenship, along with her sons. "When my dad passed away in Sri Lanka, I couldn't go and I was very sad," she told AAP. "Maybe next year once we get passports we can visit." With dreams of becoming a teacher or a police officer, her eldest son wasn't able to enter university as a domestic student. He would have to pay exorbitant international student fees because of his visa status. "I was very upset for him because he felt like he was not like everyone else." Lead researcher Lux Ratnamohan says these disappointments of feeling like second-class citizens pile up and add to the sense of not feeling settled, which can have dire mental health consequences. "These families are coming here under lots of adversity and they just don't get a chance to build any sort of social capital or any sort of social network," Dr Ratnamohan said. "When families are subjected to prolonged visa insecurity, a higher proportion of refugee children develop along trajectories of risk rather than resilience." The former Abbott coalition government established an assessment scheme to resolve the visa applications of more than 30,000 asylum seekers who arrived by boat between 2012 and 2014. But the policy has been criticised, with some 10,000 people left in legal limbo with restricted work and study rights on their visas. Dr Ratnamohan said compared to other refugees, the legacy caseload were left severely unsupported in a new nation trying to figure it out with structural barriers put in place. "If you compare families coming in on humanitarian visas, from the outset, they're getting lots of social support whether it's through work, through education or through direct support services and gradually over time that accrues," the child and adolescent psychiatrist said. "Whereas for these asylum seeking families, they are not getting any of those opportunities and the flow-on effect is adverse." DAILY Today's top stories curated by our news team. With its sleek, modern look and a price tag of 183.5 RMB, it was positioned as a premium product that would enhance the coffee-drinking experience. However, the oversight in clearly indicating that the cup was only suitable for cold beverages proved to be a costly mistake. The cup, made of a high-quality material that can withstand low temperatures, was not equipped to handle the heat of boiling water, leading to warping and deformation when exposed to hot liquids.

Gaza: At least 12 Palestinians were killed and several others injured in Israeli airstrikes across the Gaza Strip, according to Palestinian sources. Israeli aircraft targeted a house behind Kamal Adwan Hospital in Beit Lahia city in northern Gaza, local sources and eyewitnesses said on Thursday. The raid killed seven people and wounded several others, Palestinian Civil Defence spokesperson in Gaza Mahmoud Basal told Xinhua news agency. According to Basal, Israel launched another airstrike later on Thursday at a gathering of Palestinians in the Shuja’iyya neighbourhood, east of Gaza City, killing three and wounding five others with varying degrees of injuries, Xinhua news agency reported. Meanwhile, paramedics told Xinhua that medical workers recovered two bodies of Palestinians killed in an Israeli drone attack on a gathering in Khirbet al-Adas, north of Rafah city, in southern Gaza. The Israeli army has not commented on the attacks yet. Israel has been conducting a large-scale offensive against Hamas in the Gaza Strip to retaliate against a Hamas rampage through the southern Israeli border on October 7, 2023, during which about 1,200 people were killed and about 250 taken hostage. The Palestinian death toll from ongoing Israeli attacks in Gaza has risen to 44,580, Gaza-based health authorities said in a statement on Thursday.KaiXia, known for its cutting-edge developments in AI, robotics, and advanced technologies, has been a mainstay in the Japanese tech industry for years. NORRISTOWN — Montgomery County’s elected officials designated more than $5.37 million for a during its November meeting. The seven-figure sum furthered projects and services proposed in a 25-item package that was unanimously authorized by county commissioners during the Nov. 14 meeting. Respective agencies included the county’s Health and Human Services Planning Commission, Recorder of Deeds, and Youth Center. Of note, a $453,798 agreement with Tyler Technologies, Inc., of Plano, Texas, furnished a “cashiering and imaging system” for the Montgomery County Recorder of Deeds office. The six-figure contract with the Texas-based firm’s scope of work included an “enterprise records management solution with business process assessment and consulting, implementation of software and services, technical and functional staff training, and ongoing maintenance and support” services, the contract states. The three-year contract is expected to take effect in September 2025, according to county officials, and it includes terms for two optional one-year renewals. The “records improvement fund” was expected to cover the costs associated with the contract. Prior to authorization, three firms submitted bids to a previously advertised request for proposals. While the row office endorsed the Plano firm, GovOS, of Austin, Texas, and Catalis Courts & Land Records, of Alpharetta, Georgia, also applied. An existing contract with the Harrrisburg-based PrimeCare Medical, Inc. was renewed for $370,500. The company will provide health care services for the county’s Youth Center for 2025, with funding supplied through the county’s general-operational budget. While the initial three-year contract was listed at more than $1 million, county commissioners opted to use the “first available contract renewal term.” One more remains, according to the contract. Also concerning the county’s Youth Center, a $285,000 agreement with the Philadelphia-based Precision Doors & Hardware, LLC, dba James Doorcheck, covered the “full replacement and installation” of 58 doors at the facility located in West Norriton Township. Funding was expected through Montgomery County Capital Improvement Program monies. Four firms responded to a previously advertised request for proposals, with three other applicants listed as Donald E Reisinger, Inc., of West Chester, NCFurman LLC, of Ridley Park, Delaware County and S&S Electrical Services, of Warrington, Bucks County, according to the contract. Additionally, county commissioners procured drone equipment for the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office. A roughly $224,318 agreement with Brinc, of Seattle, covered “drones with related equipment to be used with the technology currently deployed in Pottstown and Norristown.” The equipment was made “available through an NPPGov cooperative contract,” the contract states, with funding secured through the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency’s Gun Violence Investigation and Prosecution Grant Program as well as “equitable sharing funds.” The next Montgomery County Board of Commissioners meeting is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 19 on the eighth floor of One Montgomery Plaza, 425 Swede St., in Norristown. Rabbit is allowing you to create an AI agent that can perform tasks for you. The feature works by “learning” a task you demonstrate, such as retrieving updates from a content creator you follow, or helping you draft a post on social media. You can by logging into the Rabbithole, the web interface for managing an R1 device. From there, you’ll create a “lesson” by describing a task and then recording yourself performing it. Once you show the AI agent what you want it to do, you can then ask it to recall what it’s learned and have it complete the task. It seems straightforward, but Rabbit acknowledges that teach mode is experimental and results may not always be what you expect. Rabbit says you can use this feature across “all websites,” such as Spotify, X, YouTube, Discord, and others, but that you may encounter issues with sites that use CAPTCHAs — a when trying to connect to certain websites. Miami had topped the Eastern Conference and the overall regular season standings with a record points tally a performance which earned them the 'Supporters' Shield'. But there would be no title battle against the best in the West for Lionel Messi and Company after they contrived to lose two matches in their best-of-three series against an Atlanta United team which finished ninth in the East and 20th in the overall standings. "I think this format is a bit unfair. It has been done for many years but I think it should be the champion of one conference against the champion of the other, to make it as fair as possible," Alba said. Alba's comments prompted much debate among MLS fans and plenty of accusations of sour grapes but they did serve to highlight that this year's playoffs, if not MLS's playoffs in general, would certainly not be a battle of the best versus best. Defending champions Columbus Crew, who finished second in the Supporters' Shield race, were also eliminated in the first round, adding to the sense that the knockout phase of the season is very much a competition of its own. So on Saturday, after the international break disrupted the flow of the post-season, the Conference semi-finals, will see a "Hudson River Derby" between two New York teams who couldn't finish in the top 10 in the regular season. New York City, Manchester City's sister club, have home-field advantage after finishing in 13th spot while the New York Red Bulls travel from New Jersey, having ended up in 16th place. The 'home field' isn't actually NYCFC's usual home of Yankee Stadium, which is being used for a college football game, but Citi Field, home of New York's other baseball club, the Mets. Later on Saturday, in the Western Conference, 2022 MLS Cup winners and last year's beaten finalists, Los Angeles FC, are at home to the Seattle Sounders. More from this section That fixture feels much more like the kind of playoff game that was expected -- LAFC finished top of the West while Seattle were fourth. LAFC faces the Sounders for the fourth time in an elimination match over the last 13 months, having defeated Seattle in the 2023 Western Conference semifinals, the 2024 Leagues Cup quarterfinal and the 2024 US Open Cup semifinal. Each of those matches was hosted by Seattle. LAFC, with former France stars in goalkeeper Hugo Lloris and striker Olivier Giroud, enter the encounter unbeaten in their last 10 meetings with the Sounders, with their last loss to Seattle coming in a 2-0 defeat in 2021. On Sunday, surprise package Atlanta, with their 40-year-old goalkeeper Brad Guzan having impressed so many with his heroics against Miami, will return to Florida to take on Orlando City, who finished fourth in the East. Atlanta won at Orlando on the last day of the regular campaign, a victory that allowed them to sneak into the wildcard round but which also completed a home and away double for the Georgia side. "Obviously, in Major League Soccer, anything can happen," said Orlando coach Oscar Pareja. "Our responsibility is to play one game at a time. This one, we're going to be ready for sure," he added. The weekend rounds off with Los Angeles Galaxy hosting Minnesota United who, under former Manchester United assistant coach Eric Ramsay, came through a best-of-three series against higher-ranked Real Salt Lake. The Galaxy start as favourites but, as this season has shown in abundance, that counts for little. "We know they are a top team at this level with top individual players who are very difficult to beat at home but...I feel that if we are a good version of what we have been over the last 10-12 games... I certainly won't be painting it as a one sided game," said Ramsay. sev/js

Pete Hegseth ’s odds of being confirmed as secretary of defense almost halved after former attorney general nominee Matt Gaetz stepped down. Gaetz’s departure after just eight days came amid reports that he had sex with a 17-year-old girl, an allegation he forcefully denies. Hegseth is facing sexual misconduct allegations of his own, with a woman telling police that he raped her at a California hotel in 2017, an encounter Hegseth has said was consensual. On the betting site Polymarket, Hegseth’s chances of being confirmed stood at 89 percent when he was announced, but fell as low as 47 percent as of Thursday afternoon. On Friday night, his chances had risen to 56 percent. Other cabinet picks have better chances of being confirmed, such as director of national intelligence nominee Tulsi Gabbard at 62 percent, and HHS secretary nominee Robert F. Kennedy Jr. at 71 percent. Others, such as former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee for ambassador to Israel, North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum for interior secretary, Rep. Elise Stefanik for U.N. ambassador, and former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi to lead the Department of Justice all have more than a 90 percent chance of being confirmed, according to Polymarket. Hegseth’s nomination chances took a hit after the release of a 22-page police report detailing the sexual assault allegations against the 44-year-old. The rape allegation was reportedly not known to the Trump transition team before they announced his nomination to lead the Department of Defense. Hegseth, a former National Guard officer and Fox & Friends weekend host, wasn’t charged in the incident, but he paid the woman in a settlement to avoid a lawsuit that his attorney said was “baseless.” Gaetz also avoided criminal prosecution after the Department of Justice chose not to charge him following an investigation into possible sex trafficking. He resigned from Congress shortly after his nomination was announced, and just days before the House Ethics Committee was set to vote on releasing a reportedly damning report into allegations of sexual misconduct and illicit drug use. His nomination ended after several Republican senators made it clear that they wouldn’t vote for the 42-year-old. Those putting their money on Hegseth’s chances of being confirmed appear hesitant to believe that the Fox News host will get the votes he needs. This comes amid reports that the Trump transition team has been drawing up a list of possible replacements for Hegseth should his nomination crumble. “People are upset about the distraction. The general feeling is Pete hasn’t been honest,” a source close to Trump told Vanity Fair. Similarly, The Washington Post reported that a person familiar with the complaint from the woman involved in the incident told the paper that there are concerns within the Trump team that more allegations against Hegseth may come to light. “There’s a lot of frustration around this,” the person told The Post . “He hadn’t been properly vetted.” A lawyer for Hegseth said the allegation was “fully investigated and found not to be true.” “There’s no other skeletons to come out,” Tim Parlatore added, according to The Post. “There’s no reason to withdraw that I’m aware of.” Polymarket is a site where foreign citizens can bet on U.S. politics, which is illegal in the U.S., using cryptocurrency.
