After nearly three months in office, the outlook for the Paetongtarn Shinawatra government is likely to be influenced by several anticipated new stimulus proposals that are expected to be revealed in unison. The National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) last week forecast a Thai GDP growth rate of 2.3-3.3% in 2025, with an average of 2.8%. Despite a more promising outlook for next year, the NESDC warned that household debt is soaring, coinciding with concerns from the business sector that the government needs to improve in a number of areas to achieve the growth rate projected by the planning agency. STILL WAITING Thienprasit Chaiyapatranun, president of the Thai Hotels Association, said the government has yet to effectively stimulate economic growth as expected. He said the tourism industry next year should continue to be a major driver of GDP with 40 million foreign tourists expected to arrive, while growth in other industries may remain stagnant. Mr Thienprasit said there are gaps that could be filled to increase the number of arrivals and spending by tourists, such as promotions during the low season that include attractive programmes and campaigns. If these goods are produced by Chinese manufacturers, this may negatively affect the export sector, he said. This could become a serious issue if Chinese companies try to avoid the higher tariffs US President-elect Donald Trump has vowed to impose on Chinese products by exporting goods to the US via Thailand, Mr Tanit said. A close examination of goods that are produced, processed and packed in Thailand both for domestic sale and export may be required to ensure the products were actually manufactured by Thai companies. "They may be made by Chinese entrepreneurs in Thailand," he said. "We don't know whether this will become an issue, which could cause the Trump administration to launch retaliatory measures against Thailand." Trump announced he would impose tariffs of 10-20% on all imported products, with tariffs of between 60-100% on goods imported from China, according to media reports. Thailand and other countries, especially those that have a trade surplus with the US, are likely to face tariffs of 10-20%, said Mr Tanit. Only a team beset by perpetual problems at quarterback for the better part of two decades can get a record-setting 497-yard, four-touchdown, jaw-dropping, where-did-that-come-from performance on Monday night from Jameis Winston — and still lose. History wrapped in misery. Only the Browns. Winston spoiled a high-level performance in Denver's thin air by throwing a pair of pick-sixes — the second with 1:48 remaining — as the Broncos rode big plays to a 41-32 win over the Browns (3-9), who have to wonder what their disappointing season might look like if Deshaun Watson had been benched before getting hurt. The loss ended any illusions the Browns had of making a late playoff push like they did a year ago. It also clinched the team's 22nd losing season since its expansion rebirth in 1999. In his fifth start this season, Winston provided further evidence that the Browns made a major mistake by not switching QBs long before Watson ruptured his Achilles tendon on Oct. 20 against Cincinnati. Unlike last season, when the Lakers shut down any attempts to trade the King, ESPN's Kendrick Perkins says that a word from LeBron James will have the Lakers (and Rich Paul) in full pursuit of a deal. "My sources tell me that if LeBron James at any point comes out and says that he wants to be traded or he wants to entertain it, they're going to entertain it," said ESPN's Kendrick Perkins on NBA Today . "It ain't no holding him back. Last year, Rich Paul stopped it." As the Lakers struggle to gain separation in the West, rumors have begun to surface about a potential LeBron James trade. Specifically, James has been connected to the Golden State Warriors , who previously tried to trade for James last season. At some point before the deadline, with both teams having a difficult season, the Warriors approached the Lakers on a potential trade to pair LeBron James with Stephen Curry in Golden State. The deal would have effectively started a rebuild for the Lakers while giving the Warriors a chance to make one last title push. But before trade negotiations ever really got off the ground, Rich Paul shut down all trade talks and insisted that LeBron would not leave L.A. The deal was dead at that point but Curry and LeBron were still able to get some playtime together in the Paris Olympic Games , where they led Team USA to the gold medal over France. The two superstars strengthened their bonds this summer and had the fans in awe over their natural chemistry both on and off the court. Now that the new season is underway, the two players are back to being enemies but it may not stay that way for long. At 39 years old, LeBron James doesn't have much time left in his NBA career and wants to spend his final seasons competing for a title over playing meaningless games. At 13-11 this season, the Lakers are not on a great trajectory and after their most recent loss, rumblings are starting to re-surface about another LeBron trade. With the Warriors still an option, some experts believe that LeBron will eventually make his way there to close out his career and Kendrick Perkins says that Rich Paul will not stop it like he did last time. So if LeBron does decide to call it quits on the Lakers, we already know that Golden State will be the first to come knocking. Of course, other teams will be quick to join the LeBron James sweepstakes as well. Whether it's the Miami Heat , Los Angeles Clippers , Dallas Mavericks , Orlando Magic , Cleveland Cavaliers , or some other unknown team, the King will surely be a hot target if he's ever available for a trade and he will likely have the final say in where he ends up. For now, all LeBron is worried about is the next game. For the Lakers, it's on December 13th against the Minnesota Timberwolves at 8:00 PM EST at Target Center. They play the Timberwolves again two nights later before a game against the Memphis Grizzlies on Sunday, December 15th, at 9:30 PM EST. Unlike scores of people who scrambled for the blockbuster drugs Ozempic and Wegovy to lose weight in recent years, Danielle Griffin had no trouble getting them. The 38-year-old information technology worker from New Mexico had a prescription. Her pharmacy had the drugs in stock. And her health insurance covered all but $25 to $50 of the monthly cost. For Griffin, the hardest part of using the new drugs wasn’t access. It was finding out that the much-hyped medications didn’t really work for her. “I have been on Wegovy for a year and a half and have only lost 13 pounds,” said Griffin, who watches her diet, drinks plenty of water and exercises regularly. “I’ve done everything right with no success. It’s discouraging.” In clinical trials, most participants taking Wegovy or Mounjaro to treat obesity lost an average of 15% to 22% of their body weight — up to 50 pounds or more in many cases. But roughly 10% to 15% of patients in those trials were “nonresponders” who lost less than 5% of their body weight. Now that millions of people have used the drugs, several obesity experts told The Associated Press that perhaps 20% of patients — as many as 1 in 5 — may not respond well to the medications. It's a little-known consequence of the obesity drug boom, according to doctors who caution eager patients not to expect one-size-fits-all results. “It's all about explaining that different people have different responses,” said Dr. Fatima Cody Stanford, an obesity expert at Massachusetts General Hospital The drugs are known as GLP-1 receptor agonists because they mimic a hormone in the body known as glucagon-like peptide 1. Genetics, hormones and variability in how the brain regulates energy can all influence weight — and a person's response to the drugs, Stanford said. Medical conditions such as sleep apnea can prevent weight loss, as can certain common medications, such as antidepressants, steroids and contraceptives. “This is a disease that stems from the brain,” said Stanford. “The dysfunction may not be the same” from patient to patient. Despite such cautions, patients are often upset when they start getting the weekly injections but the numbers on the scale barely budge. “It can be devastating,” said Dr. Katherine Saunders, an obesity expert at Weill Cornell Medicine and co-founder of the obesity treatment company FlyteHealth. “With such high expectations, there’s so much room for disappointment.” That was the case for Griffin, who has battled obesity since childhood and hoped to shed 70 pounds using Wegovy. The drug helped reduce her appetite and lowered her risk of diabetes, but she saw little change in weight. “It’s an emotional roller coaster,” she said. “You want it to work like it does for everybody else.” The medications are typically prescribed along with eating behavior and lifestyle changes. It’s usually clear within weeks whether someone will respond to the drugs, said Dr. Jody Dushay, an endocrine specialist at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Weight loss typically begins right away and continues as the dosage increases. For some patients, that just doesn't happen. For others, side effects such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhea force them to halt the medications, Dushay said. In such situations, patients who were counting on the new drugs to pare pounds may think they’re out of options. “I tell them: It's not game over,” Dushay said. Trying a different version of the new class of drugs may help. Griffin, who didn't respond well to Wegovy, has started using Zepbound, which targets an additional hormone pathway in the body. After three months of using the drug, she has lost 7 pounds. “I'm hoping it's slow and steady,” she said. Other people respond well to older drugs, the experts said. Changing diet, exercise, sleep and stress habits can also have profound effects.
