Philip Simmons High School’s cross country teams returned to Berkeley County with both championship trophies in tow. The Iron Horses swept the Class 2A state meets Friday, Nov. 22, in Newberry, with the boys’ team placing their five scoring runners in the top 11 and the girls’ team putting their best five inside the top 16. The boys finished with 39 points, three points ahead fellow Region 6-2A squad Academic Magnet. The girls tallied 48 points, also ahead of runner-up Academic Magnet by 28 points. Senior Joseph Wright led the Iron Horses boys in second place with a time of 16:08.02. Senior Pierce Walker (seventh), freshman Matthew Perry (ninth), junior Brian Stambaugh (10th) and freshman Grady Castiglia (11th) weren’t far behind their teammate. Junior Avah Mallek powered the Iron Horses’ girls to the crown by winning the race with a time of 19:12.56. She was followed by teammates sophomore Flynn Taylor (eighth), freshman Laura Perry (11th), freshman Lilah May (12th) and junior Anna Alomar (16th). Timberland’s girls placed eighth, led by eighth-grader Kemani Lampkin in 33rd place. Sophomore Gabrielle Suggs finished 43rd. Timberland’s boys finished ninth, paced by senior Johnathan Bradley in 29th place and junior Jonah Barnard in 47th place. In Class 3A, Hanahan’s girls finished fourth as a team in the Class 3A meet Thursday, Nov. 21, in Newberry. Freshman Jude Ayers finished 11th to lead Hawks. Sophomore Katelyn Bussell was two spots behind in 13th. Eighth-grader Colby DeLamielleure (19th), senior Lola Gantt (22nd) and seventh-grader (41st) rounded out the top five for Hanahan. Hanahan tallied 106 points, two points out of a tie for third.
