1 2 Nagpur/Sakoli: After a day of swinging fortunes, Congress state president Nana Patole narrowly escaped defeat and won the Sakoli seat in Bhandara district by a wafer thin margin of 208 votes. While Patole trailed by 600-odd votes at the end of counting for EVM votes, it was the postal ballots and recounting which miraculously pulled him out from the depth of defeat and provided him an air pocket to electorally breathe for another five years. Patole's day started with high confidence, courtesy the euphoric performance of Congress in the state in Lok Sabha polls, however, the podium place kept shifting between Patole and his main competitor, BJP's Avinash Brahmankar. The 28 rounds of counting kept tensions high throughout, with nobody having an idea of how the cliffhanger would ultimately end. Despite Congress bringing their superstar campaigner, Rahul Gandhi, the counting day threw up unexpected results. At the round 1 of EVM votes counting, Patole led by a slender margin of 344 votes. Shrugged as early jitters, things did not get any better as by the end of round 5 as Patole's lead increased to just 359 votes. Patole's camp was a worried lot as he trailed by 476 votes at the end of round 10. However, by this time news of the electoral rout the party faced in Maharashtra had started coming in, and some in Patole's camp feared that the sitting Sakoli MLA could be the next ‘victim' of a BJP tsunami . And round 20 of EVM vote counting seemed to confirming those fears, as Patole trailed by 3,024 votes. At the end of round 25, Patole had managed to erase the loss and now trailed by 1,607 votes. With just three rounds to go, Patole's camp had become aware of the electoral defeat of Congress stalwarts like Prithviraj Chavhan and Balasaheb Thorat. The last EVM round (No. 28) seemed like a nail in the coffin for Patole, on paper at least, as he trailed by 658 votes. It could have been a thin margin loss that would put his political future in jeopardy. But that's when the postal ballots, counted earlier in the morning, were included into the total. And as the numbers added up, Patole negated his loss and jumped back into the lead, ending as winner with a mere 208 votes. In 2019, Patole had won by a margin of just over 6,000 votes and, comparatively this time, he survived by the skin of his teeth. The news of Klavan's retirement has been met with mixed emotions from fans and fellow players alike.
