Though the game was actually pretty competitive for prolonged stretches on Sunday afternoon at U.S. Bank Stadium, the Vikings imposed their will in the final quarter to run away with a 42-21 win over the Atlanta Falcons. ADVERTISEMENT It was a masterful performance from Sam Darnold in a game against the man he replaced. It wasn’t as good of a game for Kirk Cousins as he struggled to make much of an impact against his former team. Here are five takeaways from the Vikings’ 42-21 win over the Falcons: There were audible “MVP! MVP! MVP!” chants as the game between the Vikings and Falcons wound to a close. They were for Darnold, who completed 22 of 28 passes for 347 yards and five touchdowns, proving that the Vikings are legitimate Super Bowl contenders with him at the helm. There aren’t many quarterbacks in the NFL that have played better than Darnold over the past month. In that span, Darnold has completed 85 of 125 passes for 1,158 yards and 11 touchdowns, while leading the Vikings to a 4-0 record. ADVERTISEMENT Will he actually win MVP? Not likely. Does he deserve to be in the conversation? Absolutely. Never mind that Cousins put up some prolific numbers, completing 23 of 37 passes for 344 yards. He also threw a pair of interceptions and failed to keep the game competitive. There were countless games while he was playing for the Vikings that featured a similar script. It was commonplace for Cousins to pad his stats in garbage time of a game that he had no chance of winning. Now, that’s a problem the Falcons are navigating in real time. After some strong play from Cousins earlier this season, he has regressed over the past month, and as a result, the Falcons have an 0-4 record in that span. ADVERTISEMENT The dynamic duo of Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison rewrote the record books for the Vikings in the win over the Falcons. They became the only players in franchise history to each record more than 100 yards receiving and a pair of touchdowns in the same game. That’s an insane stat considering Randy Moss and Cris Carter played together as did Stefon Diggs and Adam Thielen. In total, Jefferson finished with seven catches for 132 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while Addison finished with eight catches for 133 yards and a trio of touchdowns. ADVERTISEMENT After being held in check last time out, Aaron Jones bounced back with a solid effort for the Vikings against the Falcons. He was extremely effective carrying the ball and finished with 13 rushes for 73 yards and a touchdown. The fact that Jones was able to find pay dirt late in the game was a nice reward for him, considering he was an unsung hero on offense. As explosive as the Vikings proved to be throughout the air, Jones provided a nice changeup on the ground, which helped in chewing up clock down the stretch. As somebody who had a lot of success in the final month of last season, Jones is well on his way to replicating that this season. Though the defense for the Vikings struggled at times, allowing nearly 500 yards of total offense, it also stepped up a couple of times to force key turnovers. There was also an important forced fumble from Brian Asamoah on special teams that ended up being recovered by C.J. Ham. Admittedly my bias is a product of viewing them from the TV side of the gift bag, in that those nominations factor less, if at all, into Emmys races. The Globes mean more to moviegoers with an eye toward the Oscars – an audience segment that isn’t what it used to be. Or that was the case before last year’s batch of industry glitter fests, kicked off by one of the Globes’ worst telecasts earning it its biggest live audience since 2020 with more than 10 million viewers. (Adding in streams, that number swelled to 16 million, according to GoldenGlobes.com .) One might credit the “ Barbenheimer ” phenomenon for the uncharacteristic interest in the show since the one-two punch of “ Barbie ” and “ Oppenheimer ” became the best boost to happen to the post-pandemic theatrical space since “Top Gun: Maverick.” The closest the top 2025 nominees lists have to recapturing that magic is “ Wicked ,” nominated for best music or comedy motion picture alongside “ Emilia Pérez ,” “Anora ,” “Challengers ,” “A Real Pain” and “ The Substance .” The drama motion picture category holds less charisma, with “ Dune: Part Two ” being the biggest popular culture conversation piece on the list, and “ Conclave ” holding a distant second place. (Maybe.) Of the others, there’s “The Brutalist,” “Nickel Boys,” “September 5” and the title that describes most of the moves in these top races for most Americans: “ A Complete Unknown .” That bit of snark isn’t meant to critique these nominee selections which look fairly thoughtful. (Here’s where I confess I haven’t seen most of the drama picks, but that’s what holiday downtime is for!) If anything this list of nominees may boost the profiles of these movies, around half of which are based on original screenplays. Related How "Squid Game" Season 2 received a Golden Globe nomination before it even premiered Given the current theatrical feature environment that counts as a small miracle – and it also explains the utility, if not necessity, of the cinematic and box office achievement slot, in which the mirthfully mid “ Deadpool & Wolverine ” has a shot at winning a major award that isn't a leg lamp. Now in its second year, this relatively new category may become the latest harbinger of all that's right and wrong with the movie business, an industry increasingly hostile to true originality. If the top movie categories are primarily populated by cinematic art that we should be supporting, this one is a lineup of what the masses are actually forking over their hard-earned money to see. Nobody will gasp at learning that most of the films in this race top Box Office Mojo’s domestic list of highest-grossing films for 2024, including “ Inside Out 2 ” (No. 1), “Deadpool & Wolverine” (No. 2), “ Wicked ” and “ Beetlejuice Beetlejuice ” (No. 4 and No. 6, respectively). The rest sit firmly in the Top 20, including “ Gladiator II ,” “ Twisters ,” and “ Alien: Romulus .” Most of those movies are either sequels or revivals. Only “Wicked” and “The Wild Robot” buck those designations, and they’re adaptations of established properties (not to mention "Wicked" is a prequel of a known property). Between them, “Wicked” boasts wider renown, which makes “Wild Robot” the true “it’s an honor just to be nominated” pick. As was the case last year, when “Oppenheimer” was lumped into this category alongside “ The Super Mario Bros. Movie ,” “ John Wick: Chapter 4,” Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part 1,” two Marvel properties, and a Taylor Swift concert film but lost out to “Barbie,” the cinematic and box office achievement slot also spells out what may be ailing the movie business in the long run. Nobody should be in the business of pooh-poohing anyone’s notion of a good time, especially when that fun pulls people off their couches and into communal spaces. These movies were built for broad appeal, whether via nostalgia or overt, easy fan service, and the public rewarded that bait with financial returns. If the top movie categories are primarily populated by art that we should be supporting, cinematic and box office achievement is a line-up of what the masses are actually forking over their hard-earned money to see. “Deadpool & Wolverine” and “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” plug more into the moviegoers’ memory of what’s come before than building their universes toward something new. But then, that’s been the case with Marvel for a couple of decades now. The title of “Twisters” pretty much says what it has going for it. Seeing that “Wicked” and “The Wild Robot” made the cut is a kind of relief. After all, “Despicable Me 4” made a lot more cash. In this regard the TV nominees are a useful barometer: they may not contain many hints about how the 2025 Emmys nods may shape up, but the best comedy category is a roundup of what the aftermath of an overreliance on revivals, reboots and remakes can look like. “ The Bear ” racked up the most TV nominations with five total mentions – one for best comedy and the others covering the usual suspects in individual categories (Jeremy Allen White, Ayo Edebiri, Ebon Moss Bachrach and first-time Emmy winner Liza Colón-Zayas). Arguments over its suitability of comedy categories continue apace, I’m sure, although I hope the same is being said about “ The Gentlemen .” Regardless, the FX hit is an entirely original story with a fresh storytelling approach. The same is true of “Hacks,” which has an incredible season, the always sharp “Abbott Elementary,” and crowd pleasers “Nobody Wants This” and four-time nominee “Only Murders in the Building.” Viewers flock to these shows and enthusiastically return for new seasons of the established titles, and only one smacks of a nostalgia play: "The Gentlemen," although it satisfyingly course-corrects from the abysmal movie on which it's based. Even the ones that seem to be in the drama race take a fresh approach to a previously established format – namely “ Mr. & Mrs. Smith ” and “ Shogun ,” the second of which transforms its ‘80s miniseries predecessor into a rich exploration of Japanese history. The best drama competition is rounded out by the popular political thriller “The Diplomat” and spy drama “Slow Horses” along with “ Squid Game ,” which won’t be released to the public until the last full week of December. Taken together these nods let us know that while some entertainment hasn’t completely broken free of its reliance on the past, and certainly isn’t beyond risking acts of sacrilege – that “Harry Potter” HBO series had better slap! – the idea of pushing the medium forward isn’t entirely dead. It only takes a few paradigm-shifting movies or TV series to change the course of what gets produced and placed in theaters, meaning we may see the day that more nods in cinematic and box office achievement match up with genuinely creative films. Until then, a lot of us probably have a few best movie nominees to catch up on. NEW YORK (AP) — A Marine veteran who used a chokehold on an agitated subway rider was acquitted on Monday in a death that became a prism for differing views about public safety, valor and vigilantism. A Manhattan jury cleared Daniel Penny of criminally negligent homicide in Jordan Neely ‘s 2023 death. A more serious manslaughter charge was dismissed last week because the jury deadlocked on that count. Penny, who had shown little expression during the trial, briefly smiled as the verdict was read. While celebrating later with his attorneys, he said he felt “great.” Both applause and anger erupted in the courtroom, and Neely’s father and two supporters were ushered out after audibly reacting. Another person also left, wailing with tears. “It really, really hurts,” Neely’s father, Andre Zachery, said outside the courthouse. “I had enough of this. The system is rigged.” The case amplified many American fault lines, among them race, politics, crime, urban life, mental illness and homelessness. Neely was Black. Penny is white. There were sometimes dueling demonstrations outside the courthouse, including on Monday. High-profile Republican politicians portrayed Penny as a hero while prominent Democrats attended Neely’s funeral. Penny’s attorneys argued he was protecting himself and other subway passengers from a volatile, mentally ill man who was making alarming remarks and gestures. Penny “finally got the justice he deserved,” one of his lawyers, Thomas Kenniff, said while celebrating the outcome with him at a downtown Manhattan pub. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, a Democrat whose office brought the case, said prosecutors “followed the facts and the evidence from beginning to end” and respect the verdict. The anonymous jury, which had started deliberating Tuesday, was escorted out of court to a van. Penny, 26, served four years in the Marines and went on to study architecture. Neely, 30, was a sometime subway performer with a tragic life story: His mother was killed and stuffed in a suitcase when he was a teenager. As a younger man, Neely did Michael Jackson tributes — complete with moonwalks — on the city’s streets and subways. But Neely also struggled with mental illness after losing his mother, whose boyfriend was convicted of murdering her. He subsequently was diagnosed with depression and schizophrenia, was repeatedly hospitalized, and used the synthetic cannabinoid K2 and realized it negatively affected his thinking and behavior, according to medical records seen at the trial. The drug was in his system when he died. Neely told a doctor in 2017 that being homeless, living in poverty and having to “dig through the garbage” for food made him feel so hopeless that he sometimes thought of killing himself, hospital records show. About six years later, he boarded a subway under Manhattan on May 1, 2023, hurled his jacket onto the floor, and declared that he was hungry and thirsty and didn’t care if he died or went to jail, witnesses said. Some told 911 operators that he tried to attack people or indicated he’d harm riders, and several testified that they were afraid. Neely was unarmed, with nothing but a muffin in his pocket, and didn’t touch any passengers. One said he made lunging movements that alarmed her enough that she shielded her 5-year-old from him. Penny came up behind Neely, grabbed his neck, took him to the floor and “put him out,” as the veteran told police at the scene. Passengers’ video showed that at one point during the roughly six-minute hold, Neely tapped an onlooker’s leg and gestured to him. Later, he briefly got an arm free. But he went still nearly a minute before Penny released him. “He’s dying,” an unseen bystander said in one video. “Let him go!” A witness who stepped in to hold down Neely’s arms testified that he told Penny to free the man, though Penny’s lawyers noted the witness’ story changed significantly over time. Penny told detectives shortly after the encounter that Neely threatened to kill people and the chokehold was an attempt to “de-escalate” the situation until police could arrive. The veteran said he held on so long because Neely periodically tried to break loose. “I wasn’t trying to injure him. I’m just trying to keep him from hurting anyone else. He’s threatening people. That’s what we learn in the Marine Corps,” Penny told the detectives. However, one of Penny’s Marine Corps instructors testified that the veteran misused a chokehold technique he’d been taught. Prosecutors said Penny reacted far too forcefully to someone he perceived as a peril, not a person. Prosecutors also argued that any need to protect passengers quickly ebbed when the train doors opened at the next station, seconds after Penny took action. Although Penny told police he’d used “a choke” or “a chokehold,” one of his lawyers, Steven Raiser, cast it as a Marine-taught chokehold “modified as a simple civilian restraint.” The defense lawyers contended Penny didn’t consistently apply enough pressure to kill Neely. Contradicting a city medical examiner’s finding, a pathologist hired by the defense said Neely died not from the chokehold but from the combined effects of K2, schizophrenia, his struggle and restraint, and a blood condition that can lead to fatal complications during exertion. Penny did not testify, but relatives, friends and fellow Marines did — describing him as an upstanding, patriotic and empathetic man. The manslaughter charge would have required proving that Penny recklessly caused Neely’s death. Criminally negligent homicide involves engaging in serious “blameworthy conduct” while not perceiving such a risk. Both charges were felonies punishable by prison time. Rugby Australia has set itself the bold challenge of beating the British and Irish Lions, finishing in the top four of the 2027 and 2029 Rugby World Cups and with a 70 per cent success rate by 2029, winning the Bledisloe Cup every second year. The lofty ambitions were among a suite of targets revealed in a new Rugby Australia five-year strategy paper called “Green to gold”, which was released on Tuesday morning. The strategy, which has come after a series of high-performance summits among Australian rugby stakeholders, sets out the goals and standards Rugby Australia wants to achieve during the next five years, and the structure of how the game plans to do it. RA’s strategy is covered under three key pillars identified - Performance Excellence, Participation Growth and Promotion Effectiveness. After years of little silverware, and a rankings slide that sees the Wallabies living between the fifth and 10th teams in the world, the Performance Excellence section sets out the goal for the Wallabies and Wallaroos within the next five years to “play on the last weekend of the 2027 and 2029 Rugby World Cup”, increase the win percentages to 70 per cent, win medals at the LA Olympics in sevens and win two Super Rugby Pacific titles. Wander through the gently curving path between two 28,110-gallon tanks in the Shedd Aquarium’s redesigned rotunda space, and the calming green hues of a freshwater ecosystem greet you on one side, while the electric blues, pinks and oranges of saltwater life form a vibrant palette just opposite. Together, the two habitats make up Wonder of Water, a new exhibit that opens Tuesday and represents the latest phase of an ongoing renovation leading up to the aquarium’s centennial in 2030. Returning visitors may recall the previous iteration of this space: a Caribbean-inspired reef that opened in 1971 and featured tropical fish, stingrays and sharks. Before that, the rotunda housed a rock garden and sunken tropical pool filled with native fish, turtles and frogs. Now, through Wonder of Water, the Shedd aims to provide a place for guests to pause and reflect on Earth’s biodiversity, while piquing their curiosity about the other animal and plant life to be explored at the aquarium. Unlike the former Caribbean exhibit, which used sculpted corals, the new saltwater habitat is home to living corals that the Shedd has acquired and cultivated over the past several years, along with over 1,500 fish. (Tess Crowley/Chicago Tribune) “The corals in here act as an absolute ecosystem, so not only are they part of the beauty of this exhibit, (but) an integral part of the life support system as well,” said Keoki Burton, director of animal care and sustainability at the Shedd. Fans of “Finding Nemo” will easily spot the clown fish and anemones, but Burton pointed out that these aren’t the only symbiotic relationships that can be observed in the saltwater habitat. Several shrimp have established “cleaning stations” among the corals and rocks, where they perch and groom fish swimming by. Many of the fish are already displaying nesting and mating behaviors, too. These are examples of “the natural behaviors that we are able to elicit from these animals, because we’re providing them with such a dynamic ecosystem,” Burton said. In the freshwater habitat, more than 5,000 fish live among 50 species of plants, most of which are native to southeast Asia and have been cultivated by the Shedd for the past year and a half. Some of the plants have already grown from tiny leaflets into seven-foot stalks that are beginning to flower, and they are kept healthy and lush with a CO2 injection system and other advanced technologies that optimize the water flow, chemistry, filtration and lighting. Visitors can use periscopes to zoom in on details of both habitats and explore tactile models of the species represented in the exhibit. ADA-accessible seating will also provide a spot to relax and take in the maritime motifs in the rotunda’s ornate architecture. “There are moments when people want to lean in, they want to be more activated, and there are moments when people want to lean back and let the experience wash over them a bit more,” said Sarah Hezel, vice president of design and exhibits. “We tried to strike that balance here, so if you want to just be in this space and have it be a respite, you get that, and if you want to drill in and observe some of those incredible behaviors, that’s there, too.” In addition to the rotunda, several other spaces at the Shedd have been refreshed. The Amazon Rising gallery reopened in October after a renovation that added nearly 30,000 gallons in volume to its habitats — an expansion necessary to accommodate animals that continue to grow, such as an 11-foot anaconda and the arapaima, a South American fish that can reach up to 10 feet in length. Amazon Rising now features signage in English and Spanish — a change that will eventually be made throughout the aquarium — and new interactive activities such as a thermal imaging display that mimics how an anaconda senses its environment. The renovation also allows more sunlight to stream in through skylights, which not only helps visitors observe more details but also encourages natural behaviors from the animals. The star of this upgraded space is a new art installation titled “The Once and Forever Lake Michigan,” designed by artist David Franklin in partnership with Kohler. The hanging sculpture features 1,600 individual fish representing Lake Michigan species, each carved from wood, molded and cast in vitreous china. The result is an elegant school of porcelain fish that shimmers in a blend of natural light and soft blue-green accents. Hezel assures anyone who misses the Caribbean reef animals from the old rotunda display that they will be able to see their favorites again in this much bigger space. These renovations represent one part of the Shedd’s centennial strategic plan, which also includes commitments to deepen community partnerships, expand experiential programs and digital engagement, and pursue advancements in animal care and aquatic research. Although the new Wonder of Water exhibit is just one phase of this years-long project, its location in the rotunda has special significance, Hezel said. “When people come in the new entrance, it’s their first animal experience.
