It's the holiday shopping season, which likely means more use of your credit card. And with each swipe, a transaction fee follows. The fee is often paid by the retailer and may be passed onto the customer. A group of lawmakers are taking aim at lowering the rate of those transaction fees. Retailers currently pay around 2-3% on every transaction, totaling $224 billion in 2023, according to industry analysts CMSPI . Visa and Mastercard, two payment networks that dominate the market, argue the fees pay for a valued service for quick and secure transactions. Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Dick Durbin, a Democrat from Illinois, says it's a problem that permeates every business accepting cards. "Visa and Mastercard don't bargain their charge on every single bill. They dictate how much they're going to charge," Durbin said. Durbin, who is pushing the Credit Card Competition Act, is advocating for more competition in the credit card market to help businesses play a hand in negotiating fees. "When you reduce the cost for retailers, whether they're restaurants or shops, they end up passing it along, and reduce prices for customers," Durbin said. But payment groups argue that there are already many payment options available that drive competition. "There's cash, check, Venmo, Zelle, credit card, debit card, the list goes on and on," Richard Hunt of the Electronic Payment Coalition said. "Millions of Americans use their credit card many times throughout the day. It is safe and it is secure and is very valuable to make ends meet." Hunt says the costs pay for services, protecting businesses and customers alike from fraud and stolen information. He says taking away the service could jeopardize not only private information but also take away benefits that customers rely on, like reward points or cash back. "[Customers] use that money to pay for groceries and gasoline prices and to buy gifts during the holidays. This move by Congress would jeopardize those reward points," Hunt said. But Sen. Durbin believes that increased competition will not harm rewards programs, which he says are a key factor in attracting customers to apply for credit cards in the first place. Earlier this year, Visa and Mastercard settled a lawsuit over the fees, resulting in lower costs over the next few years and allowing smaller merchants to collectively bargain for better rates. During a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing last week, both Republicans and Democrats questioned Visa and Mastercard's profit margins, which hover around 50 percent and are fueled in part by fees. Lawmakers argued that such high profit margins should not exist amid record-high credit card debt. But even if you’ve already insulated the loft and stopped every draught, there are still things you can do to make your home more energy efficient. Money Mail talks to the hands-on experts, from gas engineers to builders, for their practical tips that you may not have considered. Check your boiler’s pressure gauge Dom Roque, managing director of Dom’s Heating and Plumbing, recommends a few basic checks that you can do on your heating system to make sure it is in good shape. And an annual service from a professional, typically costing around £100, will be money well spent. Winter chills: Even if you’ve already insulated the loft and stopped every draught, there are still things you can do to make your home more energy efficient ‘An annual check helps spot problems – such as leaks and parts wearing out – before the boiler breaks down on Christmas Eve and you need an emergency call-out costing hundreds of pounds,’ he says. If you want to carry out a few simple checks yourself, the first step is to look at the pressure gauge on your boiler, says Dom. A modern pressurised boiler heating system typically reads between one and two bars when the boiler is on. If it’s any lower there may be a leak. The gauge is normally fitted on the outside of the boiler on the front of the unit – a circular dial the size of a small stopwatch. Look at this gauge, and if it is between zero and one put your ear to the boiler without touching anything and see if you can hear a slight hissing sound – indicating steam or water escaping the system. If you can hear that, then there may be a fault with a relief valve on the unit that needs to be replaced by a gas engineer. Also listen for a hissing sound coming from your radiators to check whether water or steam is escaping from them. If there is, you may be able to fix this yourself. At the top of each radiator should be a small valve with a square-shaped tap that can be tightened or loosened with a radiator key. These can be bought for around £2 from a hardware store. If there is a hiss you might turn it clockwise until it stops – and is closed. HOW THIS IS MONEY CAN HELP How to save money on energy: What you need to know and energy-saving tips that work Don’t forget the hot water tank If you have a separate hot water tank in the airing cupboard, check if there’s an expansion vessel connected to it that needs repressurising. This is a metal cylinder about the size of a balloon that usually sits above, or to the side of, the hot water tank. It also acts as a relief valve. Containing both air and water, it takes in extra water when the tank and central heating system heats up and water expands – and releases it back again when it cools down. If it is not working properly then it might be full of water, and the only way the excess can escape is through an overflow pipe linked from the boiler to the outside of the house. You can identify the pipe outside your home to see if it is dripping. Details of the pressure required for the expansion vessel should be clearly marked on the side of the unit. If you have a modern bicycle pump that includes a pressure measurement gauge you might be able to pump the vessel back up to the required pressure level – but in most cases it is best left to the professionals. Do the radiators have cold spots? If your radiators are not warming up as usual and perhaps have cold spots near the bottom of them, this indicates they may contain sludge. Once fixed, your heating bill could be halved. It can be a messy job if you try sorting it out yourself, so it is best left to a qualified boiler expert who should have the equipment needed to clean out the radiators with a power flush. The equipment can sit outside the house. Dom says: ‘If your radiators are full of sludge, it makes them half as efficient – like boiling a pan of fresh water compared to one of mud. The latter can double heating bills.’ An occasional ‘power flush’ to your radiator system by a plumber costs around £300 – but Dom says it should pay for itself in a year. He adds that air in radiators can cause rust, so bleed them every year. You may be able to do this yourself. If you are not confident you can find practical guidance on YouTube. Other ways to stop winter burning a hole in your budget Ask your supplier for a refund: If you pay gas or electricity by direct debit, payments are usually based on an estimate of how much energy you use and may be higher than your actual consumption. It’s good to have a small buffer heading into winter, when you’re likely to use more energy. But you can ask your provider for a refund of any surplus. Go paperless: Some suppliers charge you for paper bills so go paperless to save cash if you can. Ovo Energy, for example, charges £1.50 each month for paper bills. Keep showers to four minutes: This can save you around £70 a year. Draw the curtains: Stitch thermal lining on to curtains – £10 per metre – and draw before sunset to keep warmth in to save £150 a year. Curtain shops such as Dunelm (dunelm.com) can provide further details. Turn thermostat down: Every degree you turn the thermostat down will cut bills by up to 10 per cent, knocking £145 a year off home heating. Be wary of going below 18c (64f), as this risks getting too cold. Put foil behind the radiator: Foil reflects heat back into the room to cut £120 off energy bills a year. A five-metre strip for five radiators costs £12. Check out DIY shops such as Screwfix for available options. Draught-proof windows and doors: Buy 20 metres of a door and window sticky-backed rubber seal for £24 and fix it around gaps to save up to £90 a year. DIY stores such as B&Q sell draught-proofing. Is there too much loft insulation? Builder Mike Edwards, 68, who began as a bricklaying apprentice more than half a century ago, fears too many homes fill any gap in their loft with insulation – which is a costly mistake. The co-founder of the website DIY Doctor says: ‘There is a misguided conception that a loft packed with insulation keeps bills down, when the opposite could be true. The roof space should be cool and draughty. Otherwise, hot air hitting the cold roof creates condensation that rots wooden joists and insulation gets damp.’ Mike suggests insulation should be 270mm thick – but not tightly packed down. If it is placed under boards in the attic there should also be a 50mm air space between the insulation and boards. You should leave a gap of at least 25mm between the insulation and eaves – the part of the roof that overhangs the wall of a house. Around 25 per cent of heat is lost through an uninsulated roof, so if done properly, it will save you at least £300 a year. Keep the heat in: Proper insulation is essential in any home - but too much can create condensation that rots wooden joists Put a jacket on an immersion heater This cylinder in the airing cupboard is rarely understood or used efficiently to keep energy bills down, believes Dom. He says: ‘Look at it as a giant kettle – with an electric heating element inside.’ There is no need to leave the immersion heater on all the time if you do not need hot water all day – as this can cost more money. Putting it on for just an hour before you need the hot water is enough time to warm it up. Dom says the cylinder must be well insulated – wrap it in a £20 jacket and ensure all connected pipework is also covered. This costs from £1 per metre of insulation, and should knock at least £50 a year off your heating bill. Dig out the instruction manual and make sure that the settings are providing warmth for the times that you need it. Even if it's during a closed-doors preseason scrimmage in March at home against the Florida State Seminoles, the reigning 2023 NCAA champions, with a roster that featured some teenagers that may one day become stars of the NWSL. "She's over here, like, 'Whoa, that's a card. That's a foul,'" Yates recalled. "Just crazy, and we're like, 'OK, this is a preseason [game].' But we know we need to step up. We need to have that same drive that she does." It has been a special year for Marta, as she had the opportunity to finish her Olympic career with a silver medal after an inspired Brazil team without her services defeated Spain to reach the final against the United States. Back in Orlando, she's in the final year of her contract with the Orlando Pride and preparing for Saturday's NWSL Championship match against the Washington Spirit , in what could be her last chance at lifting an NWSL championship trophy for the first time in her storied career. "Everything she does is so influential, and just like her vibe in general," Yates said. "I think she wants this [Championship] more than anything, and coming up short at the Olympics really fueled her even more. She just has a crazy drive right now." In addition to playing on the world's biggest stages, she's inspired others through both her play and off-field candor. Her profile is vast, and even though the Spirit and Pride are rivals this week, Marta's influence can be felt on both sides of the ball in the buildup to Saturday's big game. On Saturday, she'll take the field for the first time in America with her mother in the stands , and she'll be by far the biggest reason why Orlando has turned a string of mediocre seasons into perhaps the best NWSL run in history. Though, even for her that transformation is difficult to explain. "It's crazy sometimes to find an explanation, like 'How?' I think for me, it's special because it's the answer that I try to find every single year because from 2017, I am the only player that is still on the team. I ask myself 'Why? Why am I still looking to do something special here, you know?' Eight years," said Marta in an exclusive interview with CBS ahead of Saturday's title game. "In my life, there was always something crazy. The first time I won the [award for] Best Player in the World, of course I was much younger than I am now, but I did it five times [in a row], then took a break and won it after eight years. It's been eight years here with Orlando, and it's the first time that we go to a final. It's a coincidence, but I don't know. It's some answer for me, for myself. Why am I still here? Why am I looking to build something special for this team? "I don't know if I'm going to be here next year, but I'm already so happy with what I have given to the club and the players." It might be a mystery to Marta, but to her teammates, and even her rivals across the field, the answer lies in her legendary status. A post shared by Attacking Third (@attackingthird) Instrumental to Orlando's rise Her teammates are quick to point to exactly how she has driven them to the top of the table, as the team shattered the NWSL record for most points (60) and most wins (18) in a single season. They at one point rattled off a record 24-game unbeaten streak and she wrapped up the regular season fourth in the golden boot race with 11 goals. Her best moment yet came in the semifinals when she turned back the clock with a solo effort from near midfield that left two Kansas City defenders and the goalkeeper in the dust. Not too shabby for a 38-year-old. Orlando's rise to prominence has been years in the making. Head coach Seb Hines was an interim in 2022, and the club narrowly missed out on the playoffs in 2023. They brought in general manager Haley Carter, boosted the coaching staff, and brought on more international talent, including Zambia striker Barbra Banda, who finished second in the golden boot race with 16 goals, and fellow Brazilians Adriana and Refaelle. Including Marta, the Pride have a handful of Brazilian players on the roster, each of whom is inspired by their friend and compatriot. The Marta effect goes beyond just her Brazilian international teammates though. Yates has had a breakout sophomore season after being drafted in 2023. Fourth on the team in goals scored (trailing her veteran teammate by four goals), the second-year player credits Marta in helping her development over the season. "I think last year, it's hard when we were going kind of up and down with winning games and losing games. But I think from day one, Marta brought this different vibe to her. She was so determined, and she had that belief in all of us, and we kind of just followed that. So I think that was the biggest thing. Her passion is so influential to us," Yates said. Legendary 'respect' to a foe Several players head into the championship game off a busy summer where they have already gone toe to toe with the Brazilian during the Paris Olympics. Washington Spirit and USWNT defender Casey Krueger was on the field for the final minutes before the whistle was blown on Marta's Olympic career "She's the legend. I mean, there's no other way to put it," Krueger said. "Playing against her like, it's an honor. It's truly so special to be able to like, share the field even though, on the other side. Just playing against her and just seeing what she's done for the game, just what she means both on and off the field, it's been incredible." Spirit midfielder Andi Sullivan was part of the USWNT roster for the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup, and while she'll miss the NWSL Championship with an ACL injury, the Spirit co-captain is doing her part to make sure her team is prepared to go up against such an icon of the game. Part of that is giving her respect "I think we respect her tremendously, and we know what she's about, but you don't want to show her too much respect [on the pitch]. So, I think in that element, the way that you respect her is by making it very difficult for her, and I think we'll prepare in that way," Sullivan said. "She's just like a fun presence, likes to talk smack, likes to make it interesting, but so she's intense, but she's having fun, and she's been an incredible example for all of us, and I hope to ruin her party [On Saturday]." An icon for generations to come When they're not going head to head, Sullivan notes that Marta's impact on the game can be found everywhere and across generations, including her 17-year-old teammate Chloe Ricketts. The young player signed with the Spirit at 15, and is one of the up-and-coming young talents in the league. "I remember Chloe Ricketts being like, 'Oh, I really want a picture with Marta' last year. And then getting to do that, and, seeing [Marta] interact with Chloe that way was really, really cool," said Sullivan. "I think for most players in the room, she's been playing for a while and so and obviously one of the most popular players in the world. A player that paved the pathway for what we could be, and not, not just what she could be, but what we all could do. What the league could be, and what women's soccer could be. She was always someone who [you] would watch on a highlight reel, and she was always very joyful. And so to get to play against her, it's like, 'oh, like, I'm playing against this legend' and she's, she's such an incredible player," Sullivan said. While Brazil and the United States have a rivalry on the international stage, that also includes other Latin American countries, including Colombia. Spirit midfielder Leicy Santos reflected on the growth of Colombia's national team while going up against Marta in various international friendlies and international tournaments. "In South America, we've had our battles. She's definitely given me a few knocks in the head here and there," Santos joked. "Marta is the legendary player in the women's game. You know, I've had first-hand experience with the potential that she has, and that has always had. She stands out. A true standout player who, out of nothing, can create moments that are gonna just put the game away, just when you thought that nothing was gonna happen. She's incredible and is a reference point for me" 'A challenge and an honor' to compete against Spirit forward Ashley Hatch has been part of the U.S. women's national team pool since 2022, helped the team qualify for the 2023 World Cup, and has played against Marta in NWSL competition since 2018. The attacker will have a dual responsibility during the final: Try to score for the Spirit, and limit Marta's impact on the game. She's viewing the occasion as both a challenge and an honor. "I think if you're at this level, you want to compete against the best players, and I think it's an honor for all of us to step on the same pitch as her. Obviously, we respect her, but we also want to beat her. So, I think it's a combination of all those things. But I think playing against an amazing player such as Marta like, it brings so much more excitement to the game for us as players, also for fans," said Hatch. "We have to respect her as our opponent. And I think, like in 10 years, whenever I pick up my kids, [I can say] 'Yeah, I played against Marta in a final!' I mean, she's been in this league for a while, and I feel like we all always admired her and respected her when we played against her, and also when we watch her. So I would say it's a combination of both."
