Rico Carty, who won the 1970 NL batting title when he hit a major league-best .366 for the Atlanta Braves, has died. He was 85. Major League Baseball , the players’ association and the Braves paid tribute to Carty on social media on Sunday. A family friend told Listín Diario — a newspaper in Carty’s native Dominican Republic — that he died Saturday night in an Atlanta hospital. “Carty was one of the first groundbreaking Latino stars in the major leagues, and he established himself as a hero to millions in his native Dominican Republic, his hometown of San Pedro de Macoris, and the city of Atlanta, where he was a beloved fan favorite,” the players' association said in its statement . The Braves said Carty left an indelible mark on the organization. “While his on-field accomplishments will never be forgotten, his unforgettable smile and generous nature will be sorely missed,” the team said in its statement. Carty made his big league debut with the Braves in September 1963. He batted .330 with 22 homers and 88 RBIs in his first full season in 1964, finishing second to Dick Allen in voting for NL Rookie of the Year. The Braves moved from Milwaukee to Atlanta after the 1965 season, and Carty got the franchise's first hit in its new home on April 12, 1966, against Pittsburgh. Carty had his best year in 1970, batting .366 with 25 homers and a career-best 101 RBIs. He started the All-Star Game after he was elected as a write-in candidate, joining Willie Mays and Hank Aaron in the NL outfield. Carty batted .299 with 204 homers and 890 RBIs over 15 years in the majors, also playing for Cleveland, Toronto, Oakland, Texas and the Chicago Cubs. He retired after the 1979 season. CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Ten yards into a scramble, Patrick Mahomes could have easily slid for a first down or simply ducked out of bounds and moved on to the next play. Instead, the three-time Super Bowl MVP cut back inside and raced another 23 yards up the field, helping to set up Spencer Schrader's 31-yard field goal as time expired as the Chiefs held on to beat the Carolina Panthers 30-27 on Sunday. “At that point, yards are more important than getting out of bounds,” Mahomes said. “With three timeouts, I just tried to just cut through and Justin Watson had a great block and was able to get down the field and get out of bounds.” The game-winning drive was the 21st of Mahomes' career, and the Chiefs won a game decided in the final seconds for the fifth time this season. Eight of the Chiefs' wins have come by one-score margins. “You always want to have some blowouts and be a little calmer in the fourth quarter, but I've always said it could be a good thing when you get to the playoffs later in the season knowing that you have been in those moments before, and knowing how to attack it play by play not making it too big of a moment,” Mahomes said. Then he smiled and said: “But I would say this more than anybody, I would love to win a game not by the very last play.” Mahomes completed 27 of 37 passes for 269 yards and three touchdowns in his first game at Bank of America Stadium and ran for 60 yards — including 33 on that last-minute play — as the Chiefs (10-1) scored on six of their eight possessions. Noah Gray caught four passes for 66 yards and scored two touchdowns for the second straight week, and DeAndre Hopkins also found the end zone for the two-time defending Super Bowl champions. Kareem Hunt ran for 68 yards on 16 carries and caught three passes for 19 yards. Bryce Young played well for Carolina (3-8), finishing 21 of 35 for 262 yards and a touchdown while leading the Panthers back from an 11-point deficit in the fourth quarter to tie the game on Chuba Hubbard's 1-yard touchdown run and 2-point conversion with 1:46 remaining. Panthers coach Dave Canales, who benched Young earlier this season for veteran Andy Dalton, said last year's No. 1 overall draft pick “absolutely” will remain the team's starting QB next week. That's a break from Canales' recent pattern of waiting a few days to name a starter. “Bryce is certainly making the most of his opportunities,” Canales said. “And he is making a statement to all of us. Showing us he can make plays in critical areas. He did a great job extending today.” Said Young: “For me, I just want to focus on what I can control. Regardless, I always have the same mindset and preparation, wanting to be better throughout the week. I am definitely grateful for confidence.” Still, there is room for improvement. The Panthers moved the ball well but struggled in the red zone, resulting in field goals of 30, 32, 29 and 33 yards for Eddy Pineiro, the most accurate kicker in NFL history. The Chiefs wasted no time setting the tone as Samaje Perine returned the opening kickoff 56 yards and Mahomes found Gray for a 35-yard touchdown strike on the third play of scrimmage for a 7-0 lead. Gray went nine games without a TD catch before hauling in two last week against Buffalo. His 11-yard score late in the second quarter gave him two more against the Panthers . Chiefs coach Andy Reid praised Mahomes' poise but said he was concerned about his team's nine penalties for 90 yards. Moving on up Kansas City's Travis Kelce had six catches for 62 yards and moved into third place in career yards receiving by a tight end. He ranks behind only Tony Gonzalez and Jason Witten. However, Kelce failed to find the end zone for the ninth time in 11 games this season. Brooks' debut Running back Jonathan Brooks made his NFL debut for Carolina, but the second-round pick was limited to 7 yards on two carries. Injuries Panthers: Rookie TE Ja'Tavion Sanders was taken to a hospital, where he was evaluated for a neck injury and released . He landed awkwardly on his head after making a catch near the end of the second quarter. Up next Chiefs: Host Las Vegas on Friday. Panthers: Host Tampa Bay next Sunday.LNG unit departing from Shanghai ‘imminently’
ALDI shoppers are raving over a new dupe of a hugely popular crisp brand for a fraction of the price. To celebrate the release of the Wicked movie, Aldi UK took the opportunity to get in on the action and share images of their new dupe of Pringles. In honour of the film, they shared a picture of two pink and green Stackz tubes. The Snackrite crisps are the same shape and come in the same packaging as Pringles. However, the Aldi dupe is a fraction of the cost at just £1.49 each. Most tubes of Pringles are priced at above £2 in other stores, with £2.20 being the standard at Tesco and Morrisons and £2.25 at Sainsbury's. read more on aldi The colour and flavour combinations of Stackz are exactly the same as their inspiration. So, like with Pringles, the green tube is sour cream and onion and the pink is prawn cocktail which sparked excitement among shoppers. "Ooh - not seen the prawn ones before!!," one wrote in the comments on Facebook . "Can't wait to try," another said. Most read in Money A third confirmed that the "prawn ones are so delicious." Aldi is set to get a rush on the prawn cocktail-flavoured snacks with some vowing to buy lots of them. "OMG me & Jarvy will buy a crate of prawn cocktail!" one said. "Didn’t know you did them." But, the news has not pleased everyone as shoppers predict the huge popularity of the dupes . Once concerned shopper said: "Will you please stop telling everyone about my favourite things you sell? SAVING on your shop can make a big difference to your wallet. Here are some tips from Hannah Maundrell, editor of Money.co.uk, about how you can cut the cost of your shopping bills: Write yourself a list – Only buy items that you need. If it isn’t on your list, don’t put it in the trolley Create a budget – Work out a weekly budget for your food shopping Never shop hungry – You are far more likely to buy more food if your tummy is rumbling Don’t buy pre-chopped veggies or fruit – The extra they’ll charge for chopping can be eye watering Use social media – Follow your favourite retailers to find out about the latest deals Be disloyal – You may want to go to different stores to find the best bargains Check the small print – It’s always worth checking the price per kg/lb/litre when comparing offers so you’re making a like for like decision as a bigger box won’t necessarily mean you get more Use your loyalty cards – Don’t be afraid to sign up to them all. They all work slightly differently – work out what bonus suits you better and remember to trade in your points for additional rewards "Every time you do, they're out of stock when I go shopping." Referencing a song from Wicked another shopper vowed that the Aldi dupe would be "Popular!" "I'd rather eat my body weight in these than watch Wicked tbf," an honest commenter added. Others decided to pass on their own suggestions for future flavours they want to see in store with many being inspired by those on offer from Pringles. Some shoppers went as far as to say that they would never buy Pringles again if their favourite flavour was added. One said: "You need to make paprika ones and then I'll never need to buy the other brand ever again." "Worcester sauce flavour please," another requested. They got a promising response from the discount chain which passed on the information and admitted the idea made them hungry. Others who saw the interaction said the flavour would be "elite." Another threat to the popularity of Pringles is that they have become a victim of shrinkflation. While the size of the tube has reduced, the price has not. READ MORE SUN STORIES One shopper shared how the Sour Cream and Onion Pringles cans that weighed 200g now weigh 185g but still sell for a recommended price of £2.25. But there is also a threat to Aldi's Pringles dupe with rival Lidl sharing five new Pringles flavours for just £1.75.September 14, 1928 - December 1, 2024 Beloit, WI - Marilyn Lois Perry, 96, of Beloit, WI, passed away on Sunday, December 1, 2024 at Riverside Terrace. Qatar Insurance Group and Ooredoo Group have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) at the Ooredoo Group Digital Ecosystem Conference held recently. The MoU, signed by Salem al-Mannai, CEO of Qatar Insurance Group, and Aziz Aluthman Fakhroo, CEO of Ooredoo Group, underscores the importance of the strategic collaboration aimed at harnessing the combined strengths of both companies to develop and offer innovative, customer-centric insurance solutions, revolutionising the way insurance and telecommunications services are delivered. The partnership between Qatar Insurance Group and Ooredoo Group will facilitate transformative changes within the insurance and telecommunications sectors, further solidifying their positions as leaders in their respective fields. The collaboration will integrate QIC’s expertise in risk management with Ooredoo’s advanced telecommunications infrastructure to create seamless insurance solutions that will set a new standard in service delivery. By combining real-time data, mobile connectivity, and personalised insurance products, the partnership will offer cyber insurance products (SME and personal), microinsurance products, SME products, smartphone and gadget protect products, mandatory visitor insurance in combination with Ooredoo SIM cards, and commercial insurance products for their respective group entities. “We are excited to embark on this strategic partnership with Ooredoo, which reflects our commitment to delivering cutting-edge insurance solutions that meet the evolving needs of our customers. “By leveraging Ooredoo’s digital capabilities, we can offer our clients a more seamless and efficient experience, whether it’s through faster claims processing, personalised coverage options, or enhanced customer service. This collaboration represents a new era of innovation; a significant step toward transforming how we serve our customers in a rapidly changing world,” said al-Mannai. Fakhroo said: “Our collaboration with QIC represents the convergence of two industries - insurance and telecommunications - working together to offer innovative solutions that are deeply aligned with the needs of today’s digital world. “By combining our expertise, we aim to set a new benchmark for service delivery, offering customers more comprehensive, connected, and personalised experiences as we navigate this exciting era of transformation together.” The partnership is a testament to the power of collaboration between industries that are essential to the modern economy. By harnessing QIC’s deep expertise in insurance and Ooredoo’s telecommunications infrastructure, the two companies are committed to creating a more connected, efficient world. Together, they will help businesses and individuals navigate the complexities of the digital age while enhancing the overall customer experience. As part of the strategic collaboration, the two companies will roll out a comprehensive cyber insurance offering. The product will protect individuals and businesses from a variety of online threats, including cyber-attacks, cyber extortion threats, identity theft, credit card fraud, phishing & theft of funds, smart devices & wearables, and online shopping fraud. Fakhroo said: “This collaboration addresses the growing digital risks our customers face daily. By introducing robust cyber insurance products, we’re empowering individuals and businesses to confidently manage the challenges of the digital age. We aim to not only provide a safety net but also to lead the way in creating smarter, more secure digital ecosystems for everyone.” Al-Mannai said: “With the rapid advancements in technology and the increasing reliance on digital platforms, businesses are becoming more susceptible to cyberattacks, which can result in substantial financial losses, reputational harm, and operational disturbances. “To mitigate these risks, there is a growing demand for cyber insurance, a specialised product designed to shield businesses from the financial repercussions of cyber incidents. Cyber insurance is crucial, especially as cyber threats become more sophisticated and frequent, forming an essential part of a comprehensive risk management strategy that ensures businesses can respond to and recover from cyber incidents effectively.” He also said: “As individuals increasingly engage in online banking, shopping, and social networking, the risk of personal data breaches and identity theft escalates. Cyber insurance for individuals can offer coverage for expenses related to identity restoration, legal consultations, and potential losses from fraudulent transactions. “Having this form of insurance provides not only financial protection but also peace of mind, knowing there is a structured response plan to manage the aftermath of a cyber incident. As cyber threats grow more pervasive, individuals must consider cyber insurance an essential aspect of their digital security strategy to protect their digital identities and personal assets effectively.” In addition to enhancing the customer experience, the collaboration is designed to drive growth for both companies. By combining their expertise, QIC and Ooredoo can tap into new markets, explore additional revenue streams, and develop further solutions that respond to the needs of the digital economy. While the initial focus will be on the Qatari market, both companies have ambitious plans for regional expansion, with a view of extending their offering to other markets they operate in such as Oman, Kuwait, and beyond. Al-Mannai added: “The partnership is poised to make a significant impact on the insurance and telecommunications sectors, setting the stage for continued innovation and growth across the region.” Related Story QNL backs initiative to preserve Palestinian, Lebanese heritage Qatar Charity distributes food baskets to orphans in Sudan
OptiSigns to Showcase Cutting-Edge Digital Signage Solutions at the Digital Signage Experience 2024 in Las VegasThe world’s top war-crimes court issued arrest warrants Thursday for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, his former defense minister and Hamas’ military chief, accusing them of crimes against humanity in connection with the 13-month war in Gaza. The warrants said there was reason to believe Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant have used “starvation as a method of warfare” by restricting humanitarian aid and have intentionally targeted civilians in Israel’s campaign against Hamas in Gaza — charges Israeli officials deny. The action by the International Criminal Court came as the death toll from Israel’s campaign in Gaza passed 44,000 people, according to local health authorities, who say more than half of those killed were women and children. Their count does not differentiate between civilians and combatants. Experts say hunger has become widespread across Gaza and may have reached famine levels in the north of the territory, which is under siege by Israeli troops. Netanyahu condemned the warrant against him, saying Israel “rejects with disgust the absurd and false actions” by the court. In a statement released by his office, he said: “There is nothing more just than the war that Israel has been waging in Gaza.” Gallant, in a statement, said the decision "sets a dangerous precedent against the right to self-defense and moral warfare and encourages murderous terrorism.” The decision turns Netanyahu and the others into internationally wanted suspects and could further isolate them, putting them at risk of arrest when they travel abroad. Its practical implications could be limited since Israel and its major ally, the United States, are not members of the court. Still, the warrant marked the first time that a sitting leader of a major Western ally has been accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity by a global court of justice. It put Israel's allies, including some of its closest European friends, in an awkward position. Several leaders, including France, welcomed the court's decision and signaled they might arrest Netanyahu if he visited. The move “represents the most dramatic step yet in the court’s involvement in the conflict between Israel and Hamas," said Anthony Dworkin, senior policy fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations. Israeli leaders, politicians and officials across the spectrum denounced the warrants and the ICC. The new defense minister, Israel Katz, who replaced Gallant earlier this month, said Thursday’s decision is “a moral disgrace, entirely tainted by antisemitism, and drags the international judicial system to an unprecedented low.” Human rights groups applauded the move. The warrants against both sides “break through the perception that certain individuals are beyond the reach of the law,” the associate international justice director at Human Rights Watch, Balkees Jarrah, said in a statement. The decision came six months after ICC Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan requested the warrants. The court issued a warrant for Mohammed Deif, head of Hamas’ armed wing, over the Oct. 7, 2023, attacks that triggered Israel’s offensive in Gaza. It said it found reasonable grounds to believe Deif was involved in murder, rape, torture and the taking of hostages amounting to war crimes and crimes against humanity. In the Hamas-led attack, militants stormed into southern Israel, killing 1,200 people — mostly civilians — and taking some 250 others hostage. Around 100 Israelis remain captive in Gaza, around a third of them believed to be dead. Khan withdrew requests for warrants for two other senior Hamas figures, Yahya Sinwar and Ismail Haniyeh, who have both since been killed. Israel says it also killed Deif in an airstrike, but Hamas has never confirmed his death. The warrants for Netanyahu and Gallant were issued by a three-judge panel in a unanimous decision. The panel said there were reasonable grounds to believe that both men bear responsibility for the war crime of starvation and the crimes against humanity of murder, persecution and other inhumane acts. The judges said the lack of food, water, electricity, fuel and specific medical supplies created conditions “calculated to bring about the destruction of part of the civilian population in Gaza,” including the deaths of children due to malnutrition and dehydration. They also found that by preventing hospital supplies and medicine from getting into Gaza, doctors were forced to operate, including performing amputations, without anesthesia or with unsafe means of sedation that led to “great suffering.” The judges also rejected an Israeli petition challenging the court’s jurisdiction on the grounds that Israel is not a member state in the tribunal. Despite the warrants, none of the suspects is likely to face judges in The Hague anytime soon. Member countries are required to detain suspects facing a warrant if they set foot on their soil, but the court has no way to enforce that. For example, Russian President Vladimir Putin, who is wanted on an ICC warrant for alleged war crimes in Ukraine, recently visited Mongolia, a member state in the court but also a Russian ally. He was not arrested. Still, the threat of arrest now complicates any travel abroad by Netanyahu and Gallant — including to close allies of Israel. EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said the warrants are binding on all 27 members countries of the European Union. France signaled it could arrest Netanyahu if he came to its territory. Foreign Ministry spokesman Christophe Lemoine called it a “complex legal issue” but said France supports the court’s actions. “Combating impunity is our priority,” he said. “Our response will align with these principles.” Hamas in a statement welcomed the warrants against Netanyahu and Gallant but made no mention of the one against Deif. Israel’s opposition leaders fiercely criticized the ICC’s move. Benny Gantz, a retired general and political rival to Netanyahu, said it showed “moral blindness” and was a “shameful stain of historic proportion that will never be forgotten.” Yair Lapid, another opposition leader, called it a “prize for terror.” Israel’s campaign has caused heavy destruction across Gaza, decimated parts of the territory and driven almost the entire population of 2.3 million people from their homes, leaving most dependent on aid to survive. Two days after Hamas’ attack on southern Israel, Gallant announced a total seal on Gaza, vowing not to let in food, fuel or other supplies. Under U.S. pressure, Israel began allowing a trickle of humanitarian aid to enter a few weeks later. Israel now says it puts no limit on the amount of supplies into Gaza. Still, the flow of food and other goods is at nearly the lowest levels of the war, and the U.N. and other groups have said Israeli military restrictions are largely to blame, along with widespread lawlessness that has led to theft of aid shipments. The case at the ICC is separate from another legal battle Israel is waging at the top U.N. court, the International Court of Justice, in which South Africa accuses Israel of genocide, an allegation Israeli leaders staunchly deny. Lawyers for Israel argued in court that the war in Gaza was a legitimate defense of its people and that it was Hamas militants who were guilty of genocide. Associated Press journalists Raf Casert in Brussels, Mike Corder in The Hague and Josef Federman in Jerusalem contributed to this report.

Taking a look back at this week’s news and headlines from Apple, including iPhone 17 design leaks, iPhone 16 Pro camera issues, Apple’s Black Friday offers, new MacBook Pro display, iOS update warning, Apple News adds ads, and BlueSky’s app store victory. Apple Loop is here to remind you of a few of the many discussions around Apple in the last seven days. You can also read my weekly digest of Android news here on Forbes . iPhone 17 Dynamic Design Introduced by the iPhone 14, Apple’s ‘dynamic island’ surrounds the forward-facing camera and sensors with a black area of pixels and offers information and widgets in the space, expanding as needed, while doing its best to obscure the punched-out spaces. With smaller sensors coming in the iPhone 17 design, the base dynamic island can be reduced: "In terms of design, Pu once again says that all iPhone 17 models will feature an aluminum design that is more complex than the iPhone 16 models. The iPhone 17 Pro Max will introduce a “much narrowed Dynamic Island,” while the other models will retain the current design. "The smaller Dynamic Island on the iPhone 17 Pro Max is made possible by a “metalens” technology for the proximity sensor. This “metalens” change has the potential to significantly reduce the size of the Face ID sensor." ( 9to5Mac ). When Cameras Need More Work Is the iPhone family losing out in the camera space to Android? That’s the suggestion from Roger Fingas, as he looks over the iPhone 16 Pro compared to the Android powered competition. The need for better zoom and more pixels (as opposed to better interpolation software) stand out, as does Apple’s default styles applied to image processing: "I sense Apple doesn't know how to preserve colors and shadows without losing detail, and its camera tech is hampered by a familiar management concern: profit margins. Apple executives are notorious for preserving margins, which is why some iPhone components remain unchanged for years. Apple hasn't changed the lens elements on the iPhone 16 lineup to fix flares in nighttime photos and videos, even though that problem surfaced with the iPhone 13 in 2021." ( Android Police ). Apple’s Black Friday Offers Confirmed As expected, Apple’s Black Friday deal did not offer any discounts, instead following tradition and bundling gift cards in with any purchase made between Black Friday (Nov 29) and Cyber Monday (Dec 2). It’s worth noting that the offers are not available with the latest iPhones, iPads or Macs, but are offered at older models in the portfolio: "If you buy an iPhone 15, iPhone 14 or iPhone SE, you’ll find a gift card comes with the purchase. Apple says that you can snag a gift card of up to $75 with an iPhone. Up to indicates that the lower-priced models will get a lower-value card but exactly what isn’t revealed yet. Obviously, it will be announced before the event starts." ( Forbes ). A New MacBook Display Is Coming Soon WHile the new M4-powered MacBook Pro models gather critical acclaim (and more than a few Black Friday offers from third-party retailers), Apple is already preparing suppliers for the next big innovation. The arrival (finally) of OLED displays to the MacBook range: "In line with previous reports, TrendForce said Apple plans to begin using OLED displays for MacBooks between 2026 and 2027. LG and Samsung will likely be Apple's two major suppliers of OLED displays for the MacBook Pro. "Compared to current MacBook Pro models with mini-LED screens, benefits of OLED technology would include increased brightness, higher contrast ratio with deeper blacks, improved power efficiency for longer battery life, and more. The switch to OLED displays could also contribute to future MacBook Pro models having a thinner design." ( MacRumors ). Update Your Apple Hardware Now Warning Both Apple and the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency have recommended iPhone owners update to iOS 18.1.1 at the earliest opportunity. An update for older phones which cannot run iOS 18 is also available, soiOS 17.7.2 will cover the same issues: "Tracked as CVE-2024-44308, the first issue patched in iOS 18.1.1 is a flaw in the JavaScriptCore framework that could result in code execution if the user interacts with maliciously crafted web content. “Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been actively exploited on Intel-based Mac systems,” the iPhone maker said on its support page. "The second issue patched in iOS 18.1.1, tracked as CVE-2024-44309, is a flaw in WebKit, the engine that underpins Apple’s Safari browser. If exploited, a user could fall victim to a cross-site scripting attack, which sees an attacker inject malicious code into a trusted website or application." ( Apple via Forbes ). Hold The Front Page For Ads Axios is reporting that Apple News is now carrying advertising sold by Apple. Previously, ad spots were exclusively handled by a third-party service. From next year, certain areas will now be controlled by Cupertino, which will naturally be taking its 30% rake on the revenue generated, with the rest going to the publisher: "Beginning next year, Apple will sell premium sponsorships of editorially curated content for relevant events, such as the Met Gala, the U.S. Open, and more. In addition to premium sponsorships, the Apple News team is also pitching banner placements and video ads across 17 different formats, including carousel ads that feature different products." ( Axios ). And Finally... The exodus from X (neé Twitter) and the subsequent rise of Bluesky has seen it take the top spot in the App Store as consumers look to bring the Bluesky experience to their mobile: "On the U.S. App Store, Bluesky became the No. 1 app on November 13 and has not lost its position since, according to app intelligence provider Appfigures. That puts it ahead of Threads (No. 4) and X (No. 41). The App Store’s charts reward a combination of the number of installs and the pace of those installs, alongside other metrics, so this bump also has to do with Bluesky’s rate of growth, not just the sheer number of app downloads alone."
