"Times are tough": Popular Vancouver comic book store is closing its doorsCNN's Bakari Sellers called out the Harris campaign staffers who appeared on 'Pod Save America' on Wednesday, as well as the podcast itself, following the Harris staffers' post-election interview. A group of Vice President Kamala Harris' campaign aides were accused by liberals of gaslighting and taking no accountability in a post-election podcast interview about what went wrong for Democrats in the election. "Pod Save America" host Dan Pffeifer spoke with Jen O'Malley Dillon, David Plouffe, Quentin Fulks and Stephanie Cutter in the Harris campaign's first major interview since the vice president's loss to President-elect Trump. The questioning and the defensive posture by the guests was sharply criticized by online progressives. "Listened to the @PodSaveAmerica bros interview the Kamala campaign team and it was....somewhere between disappointing and enraging. I would not hire these guys if I was running the next D campaign," Ben Yelin, a podcast host and law professor, wrote in reaction to the podcast. "The more I listen to this, the worse it gets. Fully discrediting. Every five minutes they reference the fact that the campaign was short, that they didn't have enough time. FIRST OF ALL, all of these guys, except Plouffe, were part of the Biden campaign, so they could have helped give Kamala more time by getting him to drop out earlier." The Harris aides complained about media coverage and repeatedly cited their time crunch of just over 100 days to put together a campaign, which was due to President Biden going effectively unchallenged in the Democratic primary and not dropping out until three weeks after a disastrous June debate with Trump. Social media critics piled on the aides who just lost an election that Democrats and members of the media repeatedly warned was the most consequential in history. MSNBC WAS ‘UNAWARE’ HARRIS CAMPAIGN GAVE $500K TO AL SHARPTON’S GROUP AHEAD OF FRIENDLY INTERVIEW Pollster Nate Silver also called out the aides on social media and said the staffers are "the most non-agentic people I've encountered in a position of comparable decision-making authority." "They don't even see themselves as victims so much as Non-Player Characters with no will of their own," he added. "I do think a narrative, 107 days... two weeks talking about how she didn't do interviews, which you know she was doing plenty, but we were doing in our own way, we had to be the nominee, we had to find a running mate, and do a roll-out, I mean there was all these things that you kind of want to factor in. But real people heard, in some way, that we were not going to have interviews, which was both not true and also so counter to any kind of standard that was put on Trump, that I think that was a problem," Dillon said during the podcast, prefacing the statement by saying she isn't a "media hater." She went on to say that the narrative was "completely bulls---." The excuses in the interview didn't go over well. "Maybe the macro headwinds & the late candidate swap were always going to be too much to overcome. But her top campaign brass talking about ‘what happened’ for 100 min & not saying anything they would’ve done differently in hindsight is insane," Adam Carlson, a former pollster, posted. He said in another post that he voted for Harris and that the commentary from the aides was frustrating. "Pod Save America" host Tommy Vietor even engaged with a critic who accused them of not learning a "single thing." Vietor and his fellow hosts are all alumni of the Obama administration. Dan Turrentine, host of "The Morning Meeting," said he had great respect for the Harris campaign team, noting they were dealt a difficult hand with the president dropping out of the race in late July. However, he added, "What cost Harris in 2019 is what cost her in 2024 - extreme caution, indecisiveness, fear of offending/making a mistake." "Rather than be bold, clear, nimble and aggressive, she was vanilla, small, hesitant and obfuscating. These facts hover, unspoken over the podcast," he added. CLICK HERE FOR MORE COVERAGE OF MEDIA AND CULTURE CNN's Bakari Sellers, a Harris supporter, said during an interview on the network on Wednesday that the podcast interview was "disappointing at best," panning "their lack of self-awareness, their lack of self-reflection." "It was reminiscent of a Kamala Harris interview: nothing is actually said. No one answers the question. No interview push back," Tricia McLaughlin, a Republican strategist, wrote of the Harris campaign aides' interview. Jack Schlossberg, the grandson of President John F. Kennedy, also shared his thoughts about the podcast, calling it "insulting." Jack Mirkinson, a reporter at The Nation, took issue with the aides' failure to bring up the Israel-Hamas conflict, and said, "the fact that they and their candidate backed a genocide merited not even one thought." Others described the podcast as a "painful listen" and pointed out that there was "zero accountability" from the aides. In the show's interview posted to YouTube, commenters accused the Harris aides of "gaslighting," and largely said the aides just "don't get it." Jon Favreau, another "Pod Save America" co-host, posted on X early on Wednesday defending the interview. "I think people need to decide if they're genuinely interested in finding out what went wrong in 2024 so Dems can win again, or if they're just going to reject any data or information that doesn't confirm all their political beliefs," he wrote. CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP When New York Times reporter Astead Herndon referenced the interview as a "good ad for the importance of independent media," Favreau lashed out, "You ok? Have you not gotten enough credit for breaking the news that Joe Biden is old?" "You’d think you’d have more shame, but I understand this is just like a game of sims for you," Herndon replied on X. Big Lots said it will be sold to Gordon Brothers Retail Partners, which specializes in distressed companies. Gordon Brothers will then transfer Big Lots’ stores to other retailers. Variety Wholesalers, which owns more than 400 U.S. discount stores, plans to acquire between 200 and 400 Big Lots stores and operate them under the Big Lots brand. Big Lots filed for bankruptcy protection in September, saying inflation and high interest rates had cut back on consumer demand for its furniture and other products. Trump asks Supreme Court to delay TikTok ban so he can weigh in after he takes office President-elect Donald Trump has asked the Supreme Court to pause the potential TikTok ban from going into effect until his administration can pursue a “political resolution” to the issue. Trump's request Friday came as TikTok and the Biden administration filed opposing briefs to the court. Oral arguments are scheduled for Jan. 10 on whether the law, which requires TikTok to divest from its China-based parent company or face a ban, unlawfully restricts speech in violation of the First Amendment. The brief said Trump opposes banning TikTok at this junction and “seeks the ability to resolve the issues at hand through political means once he takes office.” Stock market today: Wall Street slips as the 'Magnificent 7' weighs down the market NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are closing lower as Wall Street ends a holiday-shortened week on a down note. The S&P 500 fell 1.1% Friday and the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 333 points, or 0.8%. The Nasdaq composite dropped 1.5%. The “Magnificent 7” stocks weighed on the market, led by declines in Nvidia, Tesla and Microsoft. Even with the loss, the S&P 500 had a modest gain for the week and is still headed for its second consecutive annual gain of more than 20%, the first time that has happened since 1997-1998. The yield on the 10-year Treasury rose to 4.62%. 10 tips from experts to help you change your relationship with money in 2025 NEW YORK (AP) — As the calendar changes to 2025, you might be thinking about how to approach your relationship with money in the new year. Whether you’re saving to move out of your parents’ house or pay off student loan debt, financial resolutions can help you stay motivated. If you’re planning to make financial resolutions for the new year, experts recommend that you start by evaluating the state of your finances in 2024. Then, set specific goals and make sure they’re attainable for your lifestyle. Janet Yellen tells Congress US could hit debt limit in mid-January WASHINGTON (AP) — Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen says her agency will need to start taking “extraordinary measures,” or special accounting maneuvers intended to prevent the nation from hitting the debt ceiling, as early as January 14th, in a letter sent to congressional leaders Friday afternoon. The department has taken such action in the past. But once those measures run out the government risks defaulting on its debt unless lawmakers and the president agree to lift the limit on the U.S. government’s ability to borrow. An online debate over foreign workers in tech shows tensions in Trump's political coalition WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — An online spat between factions of Donald Trump’s supporters over immigration and the tech industry has thrown internal divisions in the president-elect’s political movement into public display. The argument previews fissures and contradictory views his coalition could bring to the White House. The rift laid bare tensions between the newest flank of Trump’s movement — that is, wealthy members of the tech world who want more highly skilled workers in their industry — and people in Trump’s Make America Great Again base who championed his hardline immigration policies. A 9th telecoms firm has been hit by a massive Chinese espionage campaign, the White House says WASHINGTON (AP) — A top White House official says a ninth U.S. telecoms firm has been confirmed to have been hacked as part of a sprawling Chinese espionage campaign that gave officials in Beijing access to private texts and phone conversations of an unknown number of Americans. Administration officials said this month that at least eight telecommunications companies, as well as dozens of nations, had been affected by the Chinese hacking blitz known as Salt Typhoon. But Anne Neuberger, a deputy national security adviser, said Friday that a ninth victim had been identified after the administration released guidance to companies about how to hunt for Chinese culprits in their networks. Canadian Cabinet ministers meet with Trump's nominee for commerce secretary in bid to avoid tariffs TORONTO (AP) — Two top Canadian Cabinet ministers have met with President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for commerce secretary at Mar-a-Lago as Canada tries to avoid sweeping tariffs when Trump takes office. New Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc and Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly met with Howard Lutnick, Trump’s nominee for commerce secretary, as well as North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum, Trump’s pick to lead the Interior Department. The meeting was a follow up to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s meeting with Trump at Mar-a-Lago last month. Trump has threatened to impose sweeping tariffs if Canada does not stem what he calls a flow of migrants and fentanyl into the United States.NEW YORK (AP) — No ex-president had a more prolific and diverse publishing career than Jimmy Carter . His more than two dozen books included nonfiction, poetry, fiction, religious meditations and a children’s story. His memoir “An Hour Before Daylight” was a Pulitzer Prize finalist in 2002, while his 2006 best-seller “Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid” stirred a fierce debate by likening Israel’s policies in the West Bank to the brutal South African system of racial segregation. And just before his 100th birthday, the Dayton Literary Peace Prize Foundation honored him with a lifetime achievement award for how he wielded “the power of the written word to foster peace, social justice, and global understanding.” In one recent work, “A Full Life,” Carter observed that he “enjoyed writing” and that his books “provided a much-needed source of income.” But some projects were easier than others. “Everything to Gain,” a 1987 collaboration with his wife, Rosalynn, turned into the “worst threat we ever experienced in our marriage,” an intractable standoff for the facilitator of the Camp David accords and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize. According to Carter, Rosalynn was a meticulous author who considered “the resulting sentences as though they have come down from Mount Sinai, carved into stone.” Their memories differed on various events and they fell into “constant arguments.” They were ready to abandon the book and return the advance, until their editor persuaded them to simply divide any disputed passages between them. “In the book, each of these paragraphs is identified by a ‘J’ or an ‘R,’ and our marriage survived,” he wrote. Here is a partial list of books by Carter: “Keeping Faith: Memoirs of a President” “The Blood of Abraham: Insights into the Middle East” (With Rosalynn Carter) “Everything to Gain: Making the Most of the Rest of Your Life” “An Outdoor Journal: Adventures and Reflections” “Turning Point: A Candidate, a State, and a Nation Come of Age” “Always a Reckoning, and Other Poems” (With daughter Amy Carter) “The Little Baby Snoogle-Fleejer” “Living Faith” “The Virtues of Aging” “An Hour Before Daylight: Memories of a Rural Boyhood” “Christmas in Plains: Memories” “The Hornet’s Nest: A Novel of the Revolutionary War” “Our Endangered Values: America’s Moral Crisis” “Faith & Freedom: The Christian Challenge for the World” “Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid” “A Remarkable Mother” “Beyond the White House” “We Can Have Peace in the Holy Land: A Plan That Will Work” “White House Diary” “NIV Lessons from Life Bible: Personal Reflections with Jimmy Carter” “A Call to Action: Women, Religion, Violence, and Power” “A Full Life: Reflections at Ninety”

The NFL MVP conversation seems to be at an all-time high. I don't recall a time where it has been discussed more frequently and loudly than it is right now. Bills' Josh Allen is right in the mix, and has been the frontrunner for weeks, with others clamoring for Ravens' Lamar Jackson and Cincinnati's Joe Burrow to be the one to bring home the hardware at the end of the season. For Buffalo's head coach Sean McDermott , it's quite clear, and he made a definitive statement regarding his stance following Josh Allen 's record breaking performance against the Jets. "Josh Allen is the MVP." #GoBills | #BillsMafia pic.twitter.com/5OHUICG9Xi "Josh Allen's the MVP. I've been around this league long enough to know, to see MVPs every year, for many years, and what he has done on this team, in this organization, in this community — and no offense to anybody else — but I've got a hard time believing that someone's done more. I really believe that," McDermott said after the game. The problem with the MVP discourse this season is that it's starkly different from last year, when Jackson brought home the award despite Allen having better counting stats. This year, Allen's counting stats are behind Jackson's, and suddenly many voices want to give it to Jackson for the stats. Well, which is it? Last year, Allen should have won it. I will hang my hat on that and will argue it repeatedly. This year, despite not having quite the same stats as Jackson, I believe it's Allen's year again. The type of plays that he consistently makes, the fact that he took a team that many expected to finish third in their division, the fact that he has elevated the passing attack despite losing his No. 1 wide receiver, Stefon Diggs, via free agency, the fact that he handed Patrick Mahomes the Chiefs' only loss of the regular season , the fact that he went into Detroit and beat what will likely be the No. 1 seed in the NFC — and the fact of the matter is, he's carrying the team. This team goes as Allen goes. His 4th down run against Kansas City to score a touchdown and essentially ice the game was his MVP moment, and he's been nothing but phenomenal since then. Josh Allen has been the MVP since this moment and still is. pic.twitter.com/6WUyxs7Boy Allen is the first player in NFL history to score 40+ touchdowns in five straight seasons. His three touchdown day against the Jets propelled the Bills to a team-record 61 touchdowns and 501 points in a season." Everyone knocked him for his turnovers last year, and all he's done this year is cut his interceptions from 18 down to 6. Whatever questions people have had of him, he's answered and more. If we're just comparing counting stats, give it to Jackson. Sure. But give Allen Lamar's from last year in the process. If we're willing to look beyond just the boxscore, there is no doubt in my mind that there isn't a better player, a more valuable player to his team, than Josh Allen. And McDermott agrees. This article first appeared on A to Z Sports and was syndicated with permission.NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Married couples across the U.S. have had access to no-fault divorce for more than 50 years, an option many call crucial to supporting domestic abuse victims and key to preventing already crowded family courts from drowning in complicated divorce proceedings. But some advocates for women worried as old comments from now Vice President-elect JD Vance circulated during the presidential campaign opposing no-fault divorce. After President-elect Donald Trump and Vance won the election, warnings began popping up on social media urging women who might be considering divorce to "pull the trigger" while they still could. Some attorneys posted saying they saw a spike in calls from women seeking divorce consultations. Donald and Ivana Trump pose in May 1988 outside the Federal Courthouse in New York after she was sworn in as a United States citizen. Trump — who is twice-divorced — hasn't championed overhauling the country's divorce laws, but in 2021 Vance lamented that divorce is too easily accessible, as have conservative podcasters and others. "We've run this experiment in real time and what we have is a lot of very, very real family dysfunction that's making our kids unhappy," Vance said during a speech at a Christian high school in California, where he criticized people being able to "shift spouses like they change their underwear." Marriage rates held steady but divorce rates of women age 15 and older declined from 2012 to 2022, according to U.S. Census Bureau data released in October. Despite concerns, even those who want to make divorces harder to get say they don't expect big, swift changes. There is not a national coordinated effort underway. States determine their own divorce laws, so national leaders can't directly change policy. "Even in some of the so-called red states, it hasn't gotten anywhere," said Beverly Willett, co-chair of the Coalition for Divorce Reform, whose group unsuccessfully attempted to convince states to repeal their no-fault divorce laws. A couple exchanges wedding bands Oct. 11, 2018, at City Hall in Philadelphia. Mark A. Smith, a political science professor at the University of Washington, said while many Americans became accustomed to no-fault divorce being an option, Vance's previous comments on making it more difficult to separate from a spouse could help jump-start that effort. "Even though he's not directly proposing a policy, it's a topic that hasn't gotten a ton of discussion in the last 15 years," Smith said. "And so to have a national profile politician talk that way is noteworthy." Meanwhile, Republican Party platforms in Texas and Nebraska were amended in 2022 to call for the removal of no-fault divorce. Louisiana's Republican Party considered something similar this year but declined to do so. A handful of proposals were introduced in conservative-led statehouses over the years, but all immediately stalled after they were filed. In January, Oklahoma Republican Sen. Dusty Deevers introduced legislation that would have removed married couples from filing for divorce on the grounds of incompatibility. Deevers backed the bill after writing a piece declaring no-fault divorce was an "abolition of marital obligation." Sen. JD Vance smiles as his wife Usha Vance applauds Nov. 6 at an election-night watch party at the Palm Beach Convention Center in West Palm Beach, Fla. Similarly, in South Carolina, two Republican lawmakers in 2023 filed a bill that would have required both spouses to file for a no-fault divorce application rather than just one. In South Dakota, a Republican lawmaker attempted to remove irreconcilable difference as grounds for divorce since 2020. None of the sponsors of these bills responded to interview requests from The Associated Press. All are members of their state's conservative Freedom Caucus. Nevertheless, some Democratic lawmakers say they remain worried about the future of no-fault divorce. They point to the U.S. Supreme Court overturning the constitutional right to abortion in 2022 as an example of a long-accepted option that was revoked through a decades-long effort. "When you choose to be silent, you allow for this to creep in," said Democratic South Dakota Rep. Linda Duba. "These are the bills that gain a foothold because you choose to be silent." Before California became the first state to adopt a no-fault divorce option in 1969, married couples had to prove their spouse violated one of the approved "faults" outlined in their state's divorce law or risk a judge denying their divorce, said Joanna Grossman, a law professor at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. Qualified reasons varied from state to state, but largely included infidelity, incarceration or abandonment. Donald and Marla Trump wave to photographers Dec. 20, 1993, as they enter their wedding reception in New York's Plaza Hotel. The system was a particular burden on domestic violence victims, who are often women who could be stuck in dangerous marriages while they try to prove their partner's abuse in court through expensive and lengthy legal proceedings. "If there was any evidence that the couple both wanted to get divorced that was supposed to be denied because divorce was not something you got because you wanted it, it was something you got because you've been wronged in a way that the state thought was significant," Grossman said. To date, every state in the U.S. adopted a no-fault divorce option. However, 33 states still have a list of approved "faults" to file as grounds for divorce — ranging from adultery to felony conviction. In 17 states, married people only have the option of choosing no-fault divorce to end their marriages. Photo Credit: shisu_ka / Shutterstock Marriage—and divorce—in the U.S. today are starkly different than in earlier eras of the country’s history. A series of economic, legal, and social shifts reshaped marriage in the second half of the 20th century. More women began working outside of the home in the post-World War II era, which provided avenues to financial security and independence outside of marriage. Greater emphasis on postsecondary educational attainment and career development have led young people to wait longer to enter marriage. States began to adopt no-fault divorce laws throughout the 1960s and 1970s that made it easier to end a marriage. Meanwhile, changing social and cultural attitudes have made it more common for couples to cohabitate, combine finances, and raise children prior to getting married—or without getting married at all. These trends have contributed to a decline in the overall number of marriages and to delays in when people get married for the first time. In the U.S., there are currently only 6.5 marriages per 1,000 people each year , compared to 10.9 five decades ago. For those who do choose to get married, the age of first marriage is happening later. As late as the early 1970s, the median age for a first marriage in the U.S. was just 22. By 2018, that figure had increased to 28.8. These shifts have also affected how likely married couples are to stay together. As women entered the workforce in the mid-20th century and feminism and the sexual revolution took hold, rates of divorce rose quickly throughout the 1960s and 1970s. From 1960 to 1980, the divorce rate per 1,000 people in the U.S. more than doubled from 2.2 to 5.2. But the rate began to fall steadily after 1980, and as of 2018, the rate of divorce had dropped to 2.9 per 1,000 people. The link between rates of divorce and age at first marriage has been borne out over time, but it also explains geographic differences in rates of divorce. Today, most of the states with the lowest rates of divorce are also those with a higher median age for marriage. States like New Jersey, New York, California, and Massachusetts all stand out for having fewer than 10% of adults divorced and an age at first marriage above 30. One exception to this is Utah, which has the lowest overall median age for first marriage at 25.5 but also the third-lowest share of divorced adults at 9%, likely due in part to the state’s strong religious ties to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints . In contrast, Maine and Nevada lead all states in the share of the population currently divorced at 13.9% and 13.8%, respectively. And at the local level, many of the cities with the highest levels of divorce are found in Florida, Appalachia, and the Southwest. The data used in this analysis is from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2020 American Community Survey . To determine the most divorced locations, researchers at ChamberOfCommerce.org calculated the percentage of adults currently divorced. In the event of a tie, the location with the higher percentage of adults currently separated was ranked higher. To improve relevance, only cities with at least 100,000 residents were included. Additionally, cities were grouped into cohorts based on population size: small (100,000–149,999), midsize (150,000–349,999), and large (350,000 or more). Ford Motor Co. ( F ) recently halted production of its F-150 electric pickup trucks until early January 2025 after sales for the model slipped in October. If you’re looking for alternatives, there are other electric pickup trucks to choose from, but the selection of vehicles is still fairly limited, and certain trucks won't become available until 2025. Just like their electric sedan or SUV brethren, electric pickups aren’t cheap, due in part to some of the same factors affecting the entire automobile industry, like rising material and labor costs. The lowest-priced truck on this list fetches around $60,000. Ford suspending production of the F-150 Lightning might indicate sluggish demand for electric pickups and could be a sign that automakers could slash prices for their 2024 models as we enter 2025. 💸 💰 Don't miss the move: Subscribe to TheStreet's free daily newsletter 💰 💸 What are the best electric pickups according to Consumer Reports? Consumer Reports has a short list of electric pickup trucks in its database. Still, electric pickups are a relatively new area in terms of electric vehicle (EV) production. Consumer Reports has only evaluated two electric pickups: the Ford F-150 Lightning and the Rivian R1T. Here are the six electric pickup truck models available now, ranked from least to most expensive. Related: The 10 Best SUVs of 2024 according to Consumer Reports 6 Electric pickup trucks ranked from cheapest to most expensive Note : The data on the manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP), MPGe, EPA-estimated range, and horsepower (HP) below come from Consumer Reports, automakers’ websites, fueleconomy.gov , and Car & Driver. Data such as miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe) may not be listed on a particular automaker’s website. Bloomberg/Getty Images Ram 1500 REV The Ram 1500 REV from Stellantis ( STLA ) is Ram's first-ever electric model. It is expected to arrive sometime in 2025. Josh Lefkowitz/Getty Images 2024 Ford F-150 Lightning Ford introduced the F-150 Lightning in May 2021 as the electric version of its popular F-150 line of light-duty trucks. Production started in April 2022, and when the vehicle came out, it had a starting price tag of less than $40,000. Bloomberg/Getty Images 2024 Rivian R1T Rivian Automotive ( RIVN ) delivered its first R1T in October 2021. The 2025 model is generally the same as the 2024 model, and the wheel size selection ranges from 20 inches to 22 inches. While Consumer Reports doesn’t consider the R1T very dependable , its owners seem to love it, with 88% saying they would buy it again . Bloomberg/Getty Images 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV General Motors ( GM ) started production of the Chevrolet Silverado EV in the second quarter of 2023. Tristar Media/Getty Images 2024 Tesla Cybertruck (all-wheel drive) Consumer Reports has no review of the Cybertruck, even though the truck was first delivered to customers in November 2023 and is the best-selling electric pickup in 2024. Sales of Cybertrucks totaled 28,250 units in the 2024 year through October, according to Kelley Blue Book, compared to 24,670 for the F-150 Lightning. No MPGe is provided because the EPA considers it a heavy-duty pickup truck, and Tesla ( TSLA ) doesn’t report it. Bloomberg/Getty Images 2025 GMC Sierra EV Availability for the GMC Sierra EV is scheduled to start in 2025 with the Denali Edition 1, a luxury model at the high end of the electric pickup truck selection. More on autos: What to know about electric pickup trucks Automakers tend to pack new tech into electric pickups. One such feature is the ability to turn all four wheels simultaneously, which can help with parallel parking and navigating through rough terrain. When looking at power charging for electric pickups, check out the speed capacity. Automakers might market a pickup truck’s charge at 10 minutes giving a 100-mile range, for example. Consider the pickup’s extended warranty. The federal government mandates that automakers provide a warranty on all electric vehicle batteries covering 8 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. Some automakers offer different wheel sizes, and wheel size can affect range: Generally, the larger the wheel, the lower the range. Health minister Frank Vandenbroucke tells The Associated Press that the inexpensive e-cigarettes have turned into a health threat since they are an easy way for teenagers to be drawn into smoking and get hooked on nicotine. Australia outlawed the sale of “vapes” outside pharmacies earlier this year in some of the world’s toughest restrictions on electronic cigarettes. Now Belgium is leading the EU drive. (AP) — Officials say two Oregon men have died in a Washington state forest after they failed to return from a trip to look for Sasquatch. The Skamania County Sheriff’s Office says the 59-year-old and 37-year-old appear to have died from exposure. The sheriff's office says it based that conclusion on the weather and their lack of preparedness. Both men were from Portland. They were found in a heavily wooded area of the Gifford Pinchot National Forest northeast of that city. Family reported them missing after they failed to return from a Christmas Eve outing. Sasquatch is a folkloric beast thought by some to roam the forests, particularly in the Pacific Northwest.Share this Story : First-degree murder: Nikolas Ibey found guilty in 2022 death of Savanna Pikuyak Copy Link Email X Reddit Pinterest LinkedIn Tumblr Breadcrumb Trail Links News Local News First-degree murder: Nikolas Ibey found guilty in 2022 death of Savanna Pikuyak Ibey had already admitted to killing Pikuyak and had pleaded guilty to second-degree murder at the outset of his trial on Nov. 12, but that plea was rejected by the Crown. Another statement was to be read on behalf of her community in Nunavut. Crown prosecutors Michael Purcell and Sonia Beauchamp told the jury there was “ample” evidence that Ibey sexually assaulted Pikuyak before killing her, a factor that “elevates” the crime to first-degree murder. Ibey’s defence lawyer, Ewan Lyttle, said Pikuyak’s murder was “awful, tragic and heartbreaking.” He acknowledged that his client was guilty of murder, but denied Ibey had committed a sexual assault. During closing arguments to the jury on Monday, the prosecution countered by showing the jury graphic crime scene photos of Pikuyak’s half-naked, beaten body after she was found lying face-down on a mattress. “The pictures tell all,” Beauchamp told the jury, as she outlined the evidence pointing to an “undeniable” sexual assault. There were drops of blood on the carpet at the entrance to Pikuyak’s bedroom, where, according to the Crown, Ibey attacked Pikuyak with a piece of wood that was later found spattered with the victim’s blood. Article content There were pools of blood on the carpet showing “the attack continued while she lay there” as Ibey forcibly confined her, Beauchamp said. Ibey struck Pikuyak in the arms, face and head “over and over again” with the piece of wood Beauchamp said, and Pikuyak had defensive injuries as she tried to fight back. Nikolas Ibey was convicted of first-degree murder in the 2022 killing of Savanna Pikuyak by a jury on Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2024. Photo by Facebook Prosecutors pointed to the positioning of the victim’s body, lying face-down, legs spread apart and naked from the waist down, her underwear and pants around her ankles. Her shirt and bra were lifted up over her chest and twisted together. She was gagged and strangled with a knotted sweater. “She died suffocated and strangled,” Beauchamp said, and there is “ample evidence” of both forcible confinement and sexual assault. No male DNA was found in a post-mortem examination of the victim’s genitals, but Ibey’s DNA was found on Pikuyak’s left and right breast. “When you use common sense, and when you look at the pictures, the only reasonable conclusion is that there was a sexual assault,” Beauchamp said. “It is clear that (Ibey) entered that room with one purpose in mind, the same purpose he had been chasing all night.” Advertisement 4 Story continues below This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. Article content Ibey sexually assaulted and strangled Pikuyak after he was left sexually frustrated by an hours-long search for a sex worker earlier in the night. The Crown presented a volume of text messages, sex chats and internet searches for “escorts” that began around 7 p.m. the night before the killing and ended around 3 a.m. on Sept. 11. Ibey beat, confined and sexually assaulted Pikuyak, prosecutors said, before he strangled her to death between 3 and 9 a.m. “There is no reason, other than a sexual assault, to beat her, confine her, bind her, gag her, lift up her shirt and take off her pants,” Beauchamp said. The act of removing Pikuyak’s clothing was enough to constitute a sexual assault, even if the attack went no further, prosecutors said. “This was a sexual killing,” she told the jury. “This was, and is first-degree murder.” More to come... Las Vegas Grand Prix Puts Luxury on Overdrive and Delivers High-Octane HospitalityJon Stewart mocks 'the dance Democrats have to do' after Hunter Biden pardonBy ZEKE MILLER, Associated Press WASHINGTON (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump’s transition team on Tuesday signed an agreement to allow the Justice Department to conduct background checks on his nominees and appointees after a weeks-long delay. The step lets Trump transition aides and future administration staffers obtain security clearances before Inauguration Day to access classified information about ongoing government programs, an essential step for a smooth transiton of power. It also allows those nominees who are up for Senate confirmation to face the background checks lawmakers want before voting on them. Teams of investigators have been standing by to process clearances for Trump aides and advisers. “This agreement with the Department of Justice will ensure President Trump and his team are ready on Day 1 to begin enacting the America First Agenda that an overwhelming majority of our nation supported on Election Day,” said Susie Wiles, Trump’s designate to be White House chief of staff. The announcement comes a week after the Trump transition team signed an agreement with the Biden White House to allow transition staff to coordinate with the existing federal workforce before taking office on Jan. 20. The White House agreement was supposed to have been signed by Oct. 1, according to the Presidential Transition Act, and the Biden White House had issued both public and private appeals for Trump’s team to sign on. Security clearances are required to access classified information, including on ongoing operations and threats to the nation, and the Biden White House and outside experts have emphasized to Trump’s team the importance of having cleared personnel before Inauguration Day so they could be fully briefed and ready to run the government. Republican Senators have also insisted on FBI background checks for Trump’s nominees before they face confirmation votes, as has been standard practice for decades. Lawmakers have been particularly interested in seeing the findings of reviews into Trump’s designated nominee for defense secretary, former Fox News host Pete Hegseth, and for Rep. Tulsi Gabbard to be director of national intelligence. “That’s why it’s so important that we have an FBI background check, a committee review of extensive questions and questionnaires, and a public hearing,” said. Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine on Monday. John Thune, the incoming Senate Republican leader, said the Trump team “understands there’s going to have to be a thorough vetting of all these nominees.” AP congressional correspondent Lisa Mascaro contributed.
