Taylor|Sampson Independent Midway’s girls’ basketball team secured a decisive 52-17 victory against Union Monday night. The game, held at Union, highlighted Midway’s strong defense and effective offensive execution. Union worked to stay competitive but struggled with turnovers and missed opportunities throughout the game. Both teams entered the matchup aiming for improvement early in the season. Union’s first-year coach Mark Oates has been working with a young team to establish fundamentals, while Midway looked to build on recent progress. The game began evenly, but Midway gradually pulled away with consistent scoring and a defensive effort that limited Union’s ability to respond. In the first quarter, both teams attempted to establish momentum. Union’s Gabriela Subias attempted a three-pointer that fell short, and Midway’s Kyleigh Stonerock missed a similar attempt. Midway’s McKenna Brooks scored the game’s first basket with a layup, followed by Union’s Zadariyah Faison, who briefly gave her team a 5-4 lead with a layup. Midway responded with a three-pointer from Avery Strickland, regaining the lead. Union faced challenges with turnovers, while Midway capitalized on those opportunities. By the end of the first quarter, Midway led 11-9. Midway extended their lead in the second quarter with a strong offensive performance. Kara Beth Benton made a three-pointer, while Brooks added a layup and a free throw. Union’s Ahleeyah Richardson managed a three-pointer, but Midway continued to dominate with additional three-pointers from Strickland and Stonerock. The Spartans struggled with turnovers during this period, which limited their scoring chances. Midway’s defense, led by players like Lindsey Royal, kept Union scoreless for significant stretches. At halftime, Midway held a commanding 30-11 lead. In the third quarter, Midway continued their dominant play. Peyton Herring opened with a layup, followed by points from Stonerock and Brooks. Union’s Faison provided some offensive contributions, including two free throws and another layup, but the team’s overall scoring remained limited. Union’s errors, including a mishandled pass by Evelin Alvarez, allowed Midway to widen their margin. By the end of the quarter, the score was 44-11 in favor of Midway. Union worked to close the gap in the fourth quarter, with Faison adding two free throws and Richardson contributing a defensive block. However, Midway’s scoring depth remained evident. Royal scored off an assist from Strickland, and Ella Clark added a late-game basket. Herring concluded her night with two more layups as Midway finished the game with a 52-17 victory. Union’s Coach Oates acknowledged his team’s challenges but highlighted their effort. “We have a young team, and we’re working on building confidence and minimizing mistakes. The effort was there tonight, but we need to improve execution and decision-making.” Midway’s coaching staff noted their players’ teamwork and communication. “This game was a good step forward for us. The players executed well on both ends of the floor, and everyone contributed to the win.”US stocks rose to records on Tuesday, as indexes recovered from Donald Trump's market-moving tariff plans announced Monday evening and as traders digested the minutes of the Federal Reserve's last meeting. Investors were surprised on Monday evening by the President-elect's social media announcement that imports from China will face an extra 10% , while products from Mexico and Canada should expect a 25% duty. Trump said on Monday that these will stay in effect until drug and migrant flows are addressed by each country. Stocks sold off after hours before recovering early Tuesday. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq rose 0.57% and 0.63%, respectively, while the Dow Jones increased by over 100 points. The 10-year Treasury yield rose three basis points to 4.298%. against the Canadian dollar and Mexican peso. Meanwhile, international stocks slid on fears of a widening trade war, with European, Japanese, and South Korean indexes falling after Trump's posts. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo hinted that US tariffs would be met with retaliation, while Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called for cooperation. Investors also cheered the news of a . The cease-fire will take effect Wednesday morning and bring an end to 14 months of fighting between Israel and Hezbollah. Meanwhile, US-oriented investors parsed through the latest minutes from the Fed's last policy meeting. Central bank officials shared consensus for "gradually" cutting rates moving forward. "Many participants highlighted that uncertainties concerning the equilibrium fed funds rate, or the final destination, have complicated the assessment of how restrictive monetary policy should be," wrote Ryan Sweet, chief US economist at Oxford Economics. The market is awaiting several more data points this week. Initial jobless claims, a third-quarter GDP revision, and personal consumption expenditures data are scheduled for release Wednesday morning. Read the original article on

Social Media Demands Accountability After Photo of Ohio State Fan Goes ViralThe Philadelphia Eagles clinched the NFC East division title on Sunday, handing the Dallas Cowboys a humiliating 41-7 defeat while the Buffalo Bills secured the second seed in the AFC with a 40-14 crushing of the New York Jets. The Cowboys were already eliminated from playoff contention and without top receiver CeeDee Lamb with a shoulder injury, but it was their defense that struggled. Eagles starting quarter-back Jalen Hurts missed the game due to concussion. Kenny Pickett got the start but had to leave the game in the third quarter with a rib injury with Philadelphia 24-7 up. That meant third-choice Tanner McKee took over under the center and two of his four passes were for touchdowns. The real damage to the Cowboys, who gave up four turnovers, was done by the Eagles star running back Saquon Barkley who put up 167 yards on 31 carries to pass the 2,000 yard mark for the season. Barkley, who has 2,005 yards needs to put up 101 yards next week to break Eric Dickerson's record for the most rushing yards in a season, set for the Los Angeles Rams in 1984. The win means the Eagles are guaranteed at least the number two seed in the NFC. The Bills take the second seed in the AFC, behind the Kansas City Chiefs, after taking care of business against the New York Jets. The Bills led 12-0 at the half before their quarterback Josh Allen took total control of the game with touchdown passes to Amari Cooper and Keon Coleman either side of a rushing score from James Cook. Allen, who threw for 182 yards, had opened the scoring with a one-yard rush. Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers threw two interceptions and was sacked four times. The Indianapolis Colts were eliminated from playoff contention after falling 45-33 to the 3-13 New York Giants. While the Giants had nothing to play for, quarterback Drew Lock enjoyed himself -- he matched his career high of four touchdown passes and rushed for another score as the Giants ended their 10-game losing streak. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers kept their post-season hopes alive as Baker Mayfield threw for 359 yards and five touchdowns in a 48-14 rout of the Carolina Panthers. Later on Sunday, the Minnesota Vikings, searching for the top seed in the NFC, take on NFC North divisional rivals the Green Bay Packers. The Washington Commanders would book a playoff berth if they can beat the Atlanta Falcons in Sunday night's game.President-elect Donald Trump said on Saturday that he wants real estate developer Charles Kushner, father of Mr Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, to serve as ambassador to France. Mr Trump made the announcement in a Truth Social post, calling Charles Kushner “a tremendous business leader, philanthropist, & dealmaker”. Mr Kushner is the founder of Kushner Companies, a real estate firm. Jared Kushner is a former senior Trump adviser who is married to Trump’s eldest daughter, Ivanka. The elder Mr Kushner was pardoned by Trump in December 2020 after pleading guilty years earlier to tax evasion and making illegal campaign donations. Prosecutors alleged that after Charles Kushner discovered his brother-in-law was co-operating with federal authorities in an investigation, he hatched a scheme for revenge and intimidation. Mr Kushner hired a prostitute to lure his brother-in-law, then arranged to have the encounter in a New Jersey motel room recorded with a hidden camera and the recording sent to his own sister, the man’s wife, prosecutors said. Mr Kushner eventually pleaded guilty to 18 counts including tax evasion and witness tampering. He was sentenced in 2005 to two years in prison – the most he could receive under a plea deal, but less than what Chris Christie, the US attorney for New Jersey at the time and later governor and Republican presidential candidate, had sought. Mr Christie has blamed Jared Kushner for his firing from Mr Trump’s transition team in 2016, and has called Charles Kushner’s offences “one of the most loathsome, disgusting crimes that I prosecuted when I was US attorney”. Mr Trump and the elder Mr Kushner knew each other from real estate circles and their children were married in 2009.

Maharashtra election results: With 'Sajag raho' campaign, Sangh Parivar drives BJP-led juggernauthas appointed Charles Kushner, his son-in-law’s father, to be the US ambassador to France. The president-elect, 78, pardoned Mr Kushner, who in 2006 served a prison sentence for tax evasion, witness tampering and making illegal campaign donations, at the end of his first administration. Chris Christie, a former New Jersey governor, described Mr Kushner’s case as “one of the most loathsome, disgusting crimes” he ever prosecuted as a US attorney. Announcing the appointment, Mr Trump said the property developer, 70, was a “tremendous business leader, philanthropist and dealmaker, who will be a strong advocate representing our country and its interests”. He referenced , his former White House adviser, but did not mention that he is married to his daughter Ivanka. “Congratulations to Charlie, his wonderful wife Seryl, their four children, and 14 grandchildren”, he wrote on Truth Social. He added: “His son, Jared, worked closely with me in the White House, in particular on Operation Warp Speed, Criminal Justice Reform and the Abraham Accords. “Together, we will strengthen America’s partnership with France, our oldest ally, and one of our greatest!” The appointment underscores Mr Trump’s commitment to filling his administration with loyalists and close allies. pardoned Mr Kushner as part of an 11th-hour clemency spree during the final days of his first presidency, with the White House citing Mr Kushner’s charitable work since he completed his 2006 prison sentence. Mr Kushner pleaded guilty to 16 counts of tax evasion, one count of retaliating against a federal witness and another count of lying to the Federal Election Commission in 2005. He was sentenced to 24 months in prison. Part of the case involved the real estate developer hiring a prostitute to seduce his brother-in-law William Schulder, who was cooperating with a federal investigation against him. He filmed the encounter and sent the footage to his wife, Esther. The Schulders took the videotape to the prosecutors who tracked down the woman. In 2019, Mr Christie, a former presidential candidate, called it “one of the most loathsome, disgusting crimes” he had ever prosecuted. Jared, 43, previously described the deep impact his father’s imprisonment had on him. He was in his early 20s and a law and business school student in the mid-2000s when his father was sentenced and suddenly found himself having to run the family’s businesses while shuttling back and forth on weekends to see his father in Alabama. “When you’re on the other side of the system, you feel so helpless,” Mr Kushner said in 2018. “I felt like I was on this side of the system, so how can I try to do whatever I can do to try to be helpful to the people who are going through it and deserve a second chance.”
