Yes, it’s at a 20-man exhibition tournament in the offseason, but Scottie Scheffler added to his historic 2024 season with a ninth win as he ran away with the Hero World Challenge on Sunday in the Bahamas. The Hero is Tiger Woods’ annual event at the Albany resort where many of the top players in the world play to raise money for the Tiger Woods Foundation. While Woods didn’t play this year as he recovers from another back surgery, the field included Ludvig Aberg, Justin Thomas, Patrick Cantlay, Sahith Theegala and Tom Kim, among others. And for the second year in a row, Scheffler cruised to a win in his final appearance before the 2025 season kicks off in Hawaii. Advertisement Scheffler, who played four rounds in 25 under par, entered Sunday with only a one-shot lead before opening with three birdies on the first four holes. He was able to then easily carry that four-shot lead throughout the afternoon with a final round 64 to hold off Kim (19-under) and Thomas (18-under). Scheffler also did it while debuting a new putting grip, switching to a claw grip that puts more emphasis on the shoulders and less on the hands. Scheffler’s putting woes were a major issue in 2023 as he won just three events as world No. 1, and while his putting numbers improved to above average in his epic 2024 campaign, his stroke still cost him mightily at the U.S. Open and Open Championship. “I’m always looking for little ways to improve,” Scheffler said, “It’s something that (putting coach) Phil (Kenyon) had mentioned to me last year when we first started working together. Over the last couple of months it’s something that we fiddled around with and figured this is a good week for me to kind of try things out.” That putting stroke will be a big story in 2025, but for now, the focus remains on the cap it places on his historic 2024 campaign. Scheffler now has nine tournament wins, including the Masters, an Olympic gold medal, the Players Championship and the Tour Championship. All of the first eight wins were at either signature events, the FedEx Cup playoffs or the Olympics . While greats like Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson and Sam Snead won 10 or more tournaments in a year back in the 1940s and 1950s, reaching nine wins in a calendar year is rarified air in the modern era. Tiger Woods did it three times, including reaching 10 wins in 2000 and 2006, and Vijay Singh won nine tournaments in 2004. Now, Scheffler can join the club. The tech companies want the case to be thrown out, despite facing hundreds of lawsuits on the issue. Given the growing discussion and movement around tech’s role in the youth mental health crisis, should schools and parents really be concerned? In short, the answer is yes. For starters, social media has become an integral part of daily life for teens, with 90% of teens between the ages of 13 and 17 reporting using social media, according to The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry . Teens are online on average nine hours a day, which in many cases is longer than time spent in school or sleeping. Nine hours of usage daily points to the addictive nature of social media, with algorithms such as notifications, endless scrolling and feeds that keep kids hooked on their screens. More time spent on social media means less time is being spent learning, concentrating and focusing on academic excellence. Continuously checking phones during school hours could potentially detract from real learning and result in poor retention of critical information. Furthermore, there is a growing body of evidence that suggests social media use can significantly affect the development of the growing brain in a teenager. Consider the situation of a teen girl scrolling through her social media feed, constantly being exposed to highly curated, filtered pictures of models and influencers. This teen could easily develop feelings of inadequacy and low self-esteem when comparing her life to pictures that promote unrealistic standards of beauty that are far from representing reality. These negative emotions can contribute to overall feelings of stress and anxiety, thereby detrimentally affecting mental health. Social media can also expose teens to cyberbullying, which can be devastating. Unlike traditional bullying, cyberbullying can follow a teen everywhere since it is online and potentially in the palm of one’s hands through a phone. The anonymity of the internet and some social media platforms can lead to severe forms of verbal harassment without any accountability, which can directly affect a teen’s stress, confidence, anxiety and ability to fit in with their peers. Given the potential for cyberbullying, effects on mental health and learning, schools and parents have every right to be frustrated with the tech’s role in the mental health crisis in teens. Schools and parents share a responsibility to address issues that can harm their children. Australia recently banned social media use for individuals under 16 years of age. Whether other countries follow suit remains to be seen. Interventions that schools should immediately consider include educating children on digital literacy, encouraging discussions on social media etiquette as well as designating specific times for social media use both at school and home. Like most things in life, technology is a tool and can enhance well-being and productivity if used judiciously. Social media can allow teens to connect with friends, express themselves and learn critical information. By promoting healthy digital habits, schools and families can work together to ensure social media augments rather than harms their children’s lives.
DAMASCUS, Syria — Syria's prime minister said Monday that most cabinet ministers were back at work after rebels overthrew President Bashar Assad, but some state workers failed to return to their jobs, and a United Nations official said the country's public sector came "to a complete and abrupt halt." Meanwhile, streams of refugees crossed back into Syria from neighboring countries, hoping for a more peaceful future and looking for relatives who disappeared during Assad's brutal rule. The rebel alliance now in control of much of the country is led by a former senior al-Qaida militant who severed ties with the extremist group years ago and promises representative government and religious tolerance. The rebel command said Monday they would not tell women how to dress. Syrian citizens stand on a government forces tank that was left on a street Monday as they celebrate in Damascus, Syria. "It is strictly forbidden to interfere with women's dress or impose any request related to their clothing or appearance, including requests for modesty," the command said on social media. Nearly two days after rebels entered the capital, some key government services shut down after state workers ignored calls to go back to their jobs, the U.N. official said, causing issues at airports and borders and slowing the flow of humanitarian aid. Rebel leader Ahmad al-Sharaa, who was long known by his nom de guerre Abu Mohammed al-Golani, also met for the first time with Prime Minister Mohammad Ghazi Jalali, who stayed in Syria when Assad fled. Israel said it carried out airstrikes on suspected chemical weapons sites and long-range rockets to keep them from falling into the hands of extremists. Israel also seized a buffer zone inside Syria after Syrian troops withdrew. Syrians wait to cross into Syria from Turkey on Monday at the Oncupinar border gate near the town of Kilis, southern Turkey. In northern Syria, Turkey said allied opposition forces seized the town of Manbij from Kurdish-led forces backed by the United States, a reminder that even after Assad's departure, the country remains split among armed groups that have fought in the past. The Kremlin said Russia granted political asylum to Assad, a decision made by President Vladimir Putin. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov declined to comment on Assad's specific whereabouts and said Putin did not plan to meet with him. Damascus was quiet Monday, with life slowly returning to normal, though most shops and public institutions were closed. In public squares, some people still celebrated. Civilian traffic resumed, but there was no public transport. Long lines formed in front of bakeries and other food stores. There was little sign of any security presence, though in some areas small groups of armed men were stationed in the streets. Syrian citizens celebrate Monday during the second day of the takeover of the city by the insurgents in Damascus, Syria. Across swathes of Syria, families are now waiting outside prisons, security offices and courts, hoping for news of loved ones who were imprisoned or who disappeared. Just north of Damascus in the feared Saydnaya military prison, women detainees, some with their children, screamed as rebels broke locks off their cell doors. Amnesty International and other groups say dozens of people were secretly executed every week in Saydnaya, and they estimate that up to 13,000 Syrians were killed between 2011 and 2016. "Don't be afraid," one rebel said as he ushered women from packed cells. "Bashar Assad has fallen!" In southern Turkey, Mustafa Sultan was among hundreds of Syrian refugees waiting at border crossings to head home. He was searching for his older brother, who was imprisoned under Assad. "I haven't seen him for 13 years," he said. "I am going to go see whether he's alive." Jalali, the prime minister, sought to project normalcy since Assad fled. "We are working so that the transitional period is quick and smooth," he told Sky News Arabia TV on Monday, saying the security situation already improved from the day before. At the court of Justice in Damascus, which was stormed by the rebels to free detainees, Judge Khitam Haddad, an aide to the justice minister in the outgoing government, said Sunday that judges were ready to resume work quickly. "We want to give everyone their rights," Haddad said outside the courthouse. "We want to build a new Syria and to keep the work, but with new methods." But a U.N. official said some government services were paralyzed as worried state employees stayed home. The public sector "has just come to a complete and abrupt halt," said U.N. Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Syria Adam Abdelmoula, noting, for example, that an aid flight carrying urgently needed medical supplies was put on hold after aviation employees abandoned their jobs. "This is a country that has had one government for 53 years and then suddenly all of those who have been demonized by the public media are now in charge in the nation's capital," Abdelmoula told The Associated Press. "I think it will take a couple of days and a lot of assurance on the part of the armed groups for these people to return to work again." (" Doré Copper ") (TSXV: DCMC; OTCQB: DRCMF; FRA: DCM) today announced that it has filed and is in the process of mailing the management information circular (the " Circular ") and related materials for the special meeting (the " Meeting ") of shareholders of Doré Copper (" Doré Copper Shareholders ") to be held December 16, 2024. At the Meeting, Doré Copper Shareholders will be asked to consider and vote on a special resolution (the " Arrangement Resolution ") approving a statutory plan of arrangement (the " Plan of Arrangement ") pursuant to Section 192 of the Canada Business Corporations Act (the " Arrangement "), subject to the terms and conditions of an arrangement agreement dated October 14, 2024 (the " Arrangement Agreement ") entered into among Doré Copper, Cygnus Metals Limited (" Cygnus ") and 1505901 B.C. Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Cygnus, all as more particularly described in the Circular. The board of directors of Doré Copper (the " Doré Copper Board ") and the special committee of independent directors established by the Doré Copper Board (the " Special Committee ") have unanimously determined that the Arrangement is in the best interests of Doré Copper and that the Arrangement is fair to the Doré Copper Shareholders. The Special Committee and the Doré Copper Board reviewed and considered a significant amount of information and considered a number of factors relating to the Arrangement, with the benefit of advice from Doré Copper's management, and the financial and legal advisors of the Special Committee and the Doré Copper Board. The Special Committee unanimously recommended that the Doré Copper Board recommend to Doré Copper Shareholders that they vote FOR the Arrangement Resolution. The Doré Copper Board unanimously recommends that Doré Copper Shareholders vote FOR the Arrangement Resolution. Under the Arrangement Agreement, the parties have agreed to effect the Arrangement, pursuant to which Cygnus will indirectly acquire all of the issued and outstanding common shares in the capital of Doré Copper (" Doré Copper Shares "), and Doré Copper Shareholders will be entitled to receive, for each Doré Copper Share held immediately prior to the effective time of the Arrangement (the " Effective Time "), 1.8297 fully paid ordinary shares (the " Consideration ") in the capital of Cygnus (each one whole share, a " Cygnus Share "). As a result of, and immediately following the completion of, the Arrangement, Doré Copper will be an indirect wholly-owned subsidiary of Cygnus and the former Doré Copper Shareholders will be entitled to receive the Consideration for each Doré Copper Share previously held by them immediately prior to the Effective Time (subject to rounding, as provided for in the Plan of Arrangement). Her fiance Jake Ankers announced on social media that a group of men carrying a machete entered their home on Thursday evening while they were in the house with their two-year-old daughter. Crosby , who is nearly eight months pregnant, thanked those who have sent their support to the couple in an Instagram Story post on Saturday. The reality TV star, 34, wrote: “I’m typing this I’m laid in hospital. Baby is all fine, thank you for all the messages!” She added: “This month has had misfortune after misfortune. I want to thank you all for your kind messages about the break-in the other night. “Still something I’m really struggling to come to terms with.” Ankers also posted a photo of Crosby lying in a hospital bed to his Instagram Story, saying she had been “rushed in to hospital” as the TV star had been experiencing “serious pains in her stomach”. The businessman thanked their followers for reaching out and their local community for being “fantastic” since the burglary attempt. Ankers, who appeared with the reality star on BBC Three reality show Charlotte In Sunderland , previously said the thieves “tried to rob my house with my two-year-old and my partner who is nearly eight months pregnant, armed with a machete”. Durham Constabulary were alerted at 7pm on Thursday to reports of an aggravated burglary in Houghton-le-Spring, a town in the Sunderland area.
