Gov. Dan Patrick on the future of THC in the Lone Star State. On Wednesday, Patrick announced a legislative initiative to ban all consumable THC in Texas . As things stand right now, Texas allows the sale of consumable hemp products that do not exceed 0.3% delta-9 THC. The state also has a Compassionate Use Program that allows qualified physicians to prescribe low-THC cannabis to patients with specific medical conditions. Following his initial announcement, Patrick clarified that Senate Bill 3 – the bill in the upcoming legislative session that will aim to ban consumable THC – will not affect the state's Compassionate Use Program. Now Miller is sharing his own thoughts about Patrick's potential THC ban. An X user asked Miller, "Why is the Texas government trying to outlaw THC? Isn't it medicine for some folks?" "Not everyone is on the same page on this," Miller replied. "The GOP needs to find some consensus instead of constantly running in opposite directions. We know what the polls say. It's time to support the will of Texans." Back in May , the most recent Texas Lyceum Poll showed that 60% of Texans surveyed supported marijuana legalization. And while 31% didn't support legalization, nearly half said they would support decriminalizing small amounts of marijuana to a citation or fine. Miller himself has not supported recreational marijuana legalization in the past, but he has supported the expansion of medical marijuana use in Texas. In July 2022, Miller penned an editorial expressing his support for expanding the state's Compassionate Use Program. Shortly after, in an interview with Inside Texas Politics , he doubled-down on his thoughts. "If it'll help a toothache, I'm for it – anything that will relieve pain or suffering from somebody," Miller said. "And we've seen this, how it helps PTSD, cancer patients, etc. But we just need to open it up to everybody and quit picking winners and losers." In the same interview, Miller said he was not advocating for recreational use of cannabis, but that he wants any Texan with a medical need to be able to access what he considers to be medicine. "This is about freedom. It's about less regulation. It's about less government. It's about freedom between you and your doctor and getting government out of your life," Miller said. "So, I think it's a conservative issue."
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have shared a video highlighting the busy year they've had in 2024 while revealing a number of achievements within their charity. The release of the one-minute video, on December 2, coincided with the Archewell Foundation's Impact Report for 2023-2024. It showcases Prince Harry and Meghan's philanthropic efforts throughout 2023-2024, four years since the charity's founding in 2020. People also viewed the Archewell Foundation's 2023 tax records. The tax records show the charity received $US5.3 million in grants (approx. $8.2 million) more than double the $US2 million (approx. $3 million) raised the previous year. Of that $5 million, Harry and Meghan allocated $US1.3 million (just over $2 million) to charitable causes between January to December 2023. They are said to have received a $5 million donation from one donor while the charity was boosted by $335,000 from five separate individual donations. The tax filing reveals the Duke and Duchess of Sussex worked for Archewell for just one hour per week. But if that seems unusual, it's actually standard practice for directors of U.S. tax-exempt organisations. "The centre aims to offer a safe haven and community for women impacted by trauma, providing resources such as nutritious food, exercise, meditation, and therapeutic interventions," the report said, of the involvement. The 16-page Impact Report called the Archewell Foundation's Parents Network and The Welcome Project as its "principal programs". Mental health organisation Humanity Crew was given $US130,000 (approx. $200,000) to help prevent trauma among displaced children and their families through emergency psychological interventions and training. The Sussexes also donated to aid workers in Israel and Gaza with mental health support totalling $US50,000 (approx. $77,000) while $US80,000 (approx. $123,000) was given to boost mental health services for aid workers in Turkey and Syria. During her 35 years as a professor in the Department of English, Giovanni established a distinguished reputation as a writer of poems and essays, often drawing on her experience in the Black arts movement and as an activist for marginalized people and communities. “She’s a central figure in African American literature,” said Laura Belmonte, dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences at Tech. “We’ll be reading her work 100 years from now.” Yet at the same time, Giovanni was remembered for the deep and personal relationships she forged with the people in her classroom and beyond. “That sort of very public, very global persona always coexisted with those more private times that she would offer herself to people for mentorship and encouragement and inspiration,” Belmonte said. The University Distinguished Professor Emerita had been battling cancer for the third time, according to a Tech news release about her death. Giovanni, who was named by Oprah Winfrey as one of 25 living legends, retired from the university in 2022 but continued a busy speaking, traveling, and writing schedule, including returning to campus in April to present the annual Giovanni-Steger Poetry Prize Award to undergraduate students. “We can never let words be silenced,” Giovanni said during the Moss Arts Center ceremony. “We can never let words be taken away from us. We can never let people, because they don't like what we're saying, shut us up. Words are the most important things that human beings have. And no matter what the situation, we must always remember to use them.” It was Giovanni who was asked to find the right words on April 16, 2007, when 32 students and faculty members were killed in a mass shooting on campus. Charles Steger, president of Tech at the time, asked her to compose a poem overnight and deliver it at a campus convocation the next day. Her remarks, which opened and closed with “We are Virginia Tech,” are still remembered today. “People in the community every year will quote that poem,” Belmonte said. “It just became this kind of singular moment of light in the university’s darkest day.” In a statement released Tuesday, Tech President Tim Sands called Giovanni “a treasure who lived out Ut Prosim in countless ways, using her literary gifts to motivate change, encourage critical thought, inspire us to dream, and provide comfort in times of sadness and grief.” Over the years, the poet and professor became a key part of Tech – and the university of her. Giovanni once hosted a fish fry in association with a class she was teaching about the Harlem Renaissance. Her colleagues joked that no one would show up. Through her work and activism, Giovanni befriended people such as Rosa Parks, Aretha Franklin, James Baldwin, Nina Simone, Morgan Freeman and Muhammad Ali, among others. But she seemed just as interested in getting to know the unknown, and offering them advice and inspiration. “She never made people feel intimidated,” by her stature, Belmonte said. “She was warm and open and wanting to listen to what you had to say.
