By Jeffrey Dastin NEW YORK (Reuters) – Policymakers aiming to recommend safeguards for artificial intelligence are facing a formidable challenge: science that is still evolving. AI developers themselves are grappling with how to prevent abuse of novel systems, offering no easy fix for government authorities to embrace, Elizabeth Kelly, director of the U.S. Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute, said on Tuesday. Cybersecurity is an area of concern according to Kelly, speaking at the Reuters NEXT conference in New York. Ways to bypass guard rails that AI labs established for security and other topics, called “jailbreaks,” can be easy, she said. “It is difficult for policymakers to say these are best practices we recommend in terms of safeguards, when we don’t actually know which ones work and which ones don’t,” Kelly said. Technology experts are hashing out how to vet and protect AI across different dimensions. Another area regards synthetic content. Tampering with digital watermarks, which flag to consumers when images are AI-generated, remains too easy for authorities to devise guidance for industry, she said. The U.S. AI Safety Institute, created under the Biden administration, is addressing such concerns via academic, industry and civil society partnerships that inform its tech evaluations, Kelly said. She said AI safety is a “fundamentally bipartisan issue,” when asked what will happen to the body after Donald Trump takes office in January. The institute’s first director, Kelly recently presided over the inaugural gathering of AI safety institutes from around the world, which took place last month in San Francisco. Asked about the outcome of these meetings, Kelly said the 10 country members were working toward interoperable safety tests with the help of more technical, hoodie-wearing experts than in a typical diplomatic meeting. “It was very much getting the nerds in the room,” she said. New York Giants star rookie wideout Malik Nabers (toe) missed practice Thursday and termed himself a game-day decision. He also is unsure if he will be able to participate on Friday. The Giants host the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday. "I'm hoping so, it all depends on how it feels tomorrow, that's really it," Nabers said Thursday. Nabers, 21, has been one of the few bright spots for the Giants and leads the team with 97 receptions for 969 yards and four touchdown catches in 13 games (12 starts). Selected sixth overall out of LSU, Nabers has caught 10 or more passes on three occasions but has just one touchdown catch over the past 10 games. Though the Giants (2-13) are mired in a franchise-worst 10-game losing streak, Nabers isn't down about the situation. "We're happy where we're at," Nabers said. "Continue to grow every day. A lot of things to fix, a lot of things we can look back on in our rookie year and continue to try to get better for next year." In addition to Nabers, running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. (ankle), center John Michael Schmitz (ankle), linebacker Micah McFadden (neck), cornerbacks Greg Stroman (shoulder/shin) and Dee Williams (toe) and safety Raheem Layne (knee) sat out practice Thursday. Quarterback Drew Lock (right shoulder) was a limited participant. --Field Level MediaSocial media influencer Paige Spiranac knows how to break the internet, that's for sure. Despite so much attention being on this Saturday's game between Ohio State and Michigan, the former San Diego State golfer found a way to steal the spotlight this afternoon. That's because she shared a photo of her wearing a black swimsuit while posing in a snowstorm. Spiranac, who has become a fan favorite in the golf community, decided to go out into the cold while wearing nothing but a black bikini. That may sound ridiculous, but that's what she did. "25 days of holiday outfits starts tomorrow on my Passes account," Spiranac wrote for her caption . In just an hour, Spiranac's post received over 164,000 views. And so, I was so comfortable being in leotards and when I started playing golf I didn’t have enough money to go out and buy a whole new golf-appropriate wardrobe,” Spiranac said . "So I would often wear athletic wear that I just had in my closet and that was leggings and tank tops. That’s how I learned the game of golf on public golf courses where there wasn’t a strict dress code." Getty Images. Besides, Spiranac is more than comfortable wearing just a swimsuit. After all, she's a Sports Illustrated Swimsuit legend. "It was the most confident and powerful and empowered that I have ever felt, and I carry that now,” Spiranac said. “Whatever I do, that's a big part of me and a badge that I'll hold forever, being a Sports Illustrated Swimsuit model." Only time will tell if Spiranac has more holiday-themed swimsuit photos ready to go. Related: 'The Next Paige Spiranac' Is Turning Heads On Social Media

Is Too Good To Go too good to be true? Customers say anti-food waste app has become a 'rip off' with restaurants serving'tiny portions' of 'mouldy food' An increasing number of customers are ditching the food waste app READ MORE: I bought a Too Good To Go bag from Blank Street for £3.50... here is the insane saving I made By ALICE WADE Published: 11:44 EST, 27 December 2024 | Updated: 12:00 EST, 27 December 2024 e-mail 18 View comments When Too Good To Go launched in 2015, it was set to revolutionise the food industry. The app, which allows customers to purchase near-expired produce, surplus stock and food that would have otherwise gone to waste, was an immediate hit. In the decade since, it has launched across Europe and the US, and more than 350 million meals have been 'saved'. This means 350 million customers have paid a small price, usually between £3 and £5 for a 'a magic bag'. Customers then pick up a surprise bag of food the restaurant would have otherwise thrown out. But an increasing number of customers have become disillusioned with app, with more patrons complaining of meagre portions, mouldy food and poor choices. The app now boasts 155,000 active partners worldwide with dozens of eateries selling 'surprise bags' for a reduced cost. Among those popular eateries several supermarkets including Aldi , Morrisons , Asda , and even Nisa and Spar shop. In one video, one creator with the username @kelly198810 shared a haul of products she purchased in a Morrison's Too Good To Go bag, which included 30 eggs with one day left on their sell-by-date and several loaves of 'rock hard' bread. But now customers are complaining of mouldy food (pictured mouldy croissants from a Too Good To Go bakery) Customers have taken to TikTok share pictures and clips of their food going out of date Others have said they've been given their 'worst ever' bags recently In another video, another woman shared her experience rescuing a surprise bag in Bristol, claiming the food she received was 'absolutely disgusting' and 'unacceptable' But despite it's success over the last eight years, an increasing number of customers have become disillusioned with app, with more patrons complaining of meagre portions, out of date food and poor choice In the video she unveiled the selection of goods. lamenting her disappointment at the selection. Starting the video, she said: 'I thought I'd try one again, I've not had one for a few months. This time we went to Morrison's,' she said. 'First of all we have a load of bread that is rock hard and open. 'We then have a second loaf of bread, and then a third loaf of bread. I think I just get bad luck on these too good to go things.' 'We also have some crusty bread rolls. I know they're meant to be hard but literally I punched that and it did not move.' Viewers of the video took to the comments to share their similar experiences having received food that was no longer edible. One wrote: 'I got a Morrisons one and got a lot of veg and it was going brown!!!' Another said: 'Morrisons are the worst - I gave up after I got one filled with wet slimy mushrooms and he's bread rolls !' Others complained of 'terrible' combinations, having received a bag containing dozens of out of date donuts and four bulbs of garlic. One Tiktoker, nostalgia.2000s1, revealed their rescue bag from Costa which they described 'a little bit disappointing' While some have been overjoyed with packed containers brimming with delicious treats, not everyone has had such a positive experience, with an increasing number of patrons complaining of 'mouldy' food and small portions for the price The app was founded in Copenhagen by a group of eco-warriors set on reducing the amount of wastage in the city's food outlets, giving second life to unsold meals. The company have reported now saved the equivalent of 810,000 tonnes of CO2e, 243 billion litres of water use and 840 million m2 of land use per annum. One TikTok user, nostalgia.2000s1, revealed their rescue bag from Costa which they described 'a little bit disappointing'. Opening the bag, the shopper revealed three sandwiches, all of which had already been reduced in price to be flogged at 50 per cent less, before eventually making their way in to a surprise bag. In their surprise bag was one bacon roll, a Cajun chicken wrap and a tandoori spiced bhaji wrap which he said 'doesn't look the best'. 'And it was 50 per cent off so they were due to chuck it out anyway,' he said, adding that he wouldn't get another from Costa in the future. And not only are customers disappointed by the quantity of food, but several have complained after discovering 'rotten' and 'off' food. In another video, another woman shared her experience rescuing a surprise bag in Bristol, claiming the food she received was 'absolutely disgusting' and 'unacceptable'. The creator, lyndsayjane1900, said: 'This is food that should have been put in the bin two days ago that they've then made me pay for.' But despite it's success over the last eight years, an increasing number of customers have become disillusioned with app, with more patrons complaining of meagre portions, out of date food and poor choice Revealing the contents of the bag, she pulled out a bag of leave which were 'already yellowing and sweating in the bag' as well as a selection of browning potatoes that were 'absolutely read for the bin'. Also amongst the bag were soft broccoli, wrinkled peppers and mouldy carrots and onions as well as 'slimy' beetroot - all of which she was forced She said she would raise the issue with the company and insist on getting her back. In another video, one patron of the no-waste app purchased a bag from Nisa and were disappointed to discover they had received a number of products that were out of date that day, including four packets of ham and pork pies. 'I wont be trying Nisa again for their Too Good To Go bag and I would recommend avoiding them if you don't eat pork.' Again, commenters flocked to the comments to share their equally negative experiences. Another customer shared a bag of mouldy fruit she'd recieved from the app Others shared snaps of mouldy muffins One wrote: 'I once ordered TGTG from Morrisons. Never again. They gave me black bananas that were leaking, mouldy oranges and some EXPIRED meat (expired 3 days before). I got a refund thankfully but never again.' Another said: 'Try Toby carvery-Eden Park! Couldn't even give a 0. Hard mash, 2 burned sausage. Inedible. To feel ripped off by Too good to go. I won't even use that Toby as a result.' And reviews elsewhere are less than flattering. Averaging at a 3.5 star rating on TrustPilot, the app has raked in heaps of disappointed views. One read: 'The food was diabolical it was completely inedible. Chicken snacks obviously stored incorrectly as packaging was warm and blown up to almost bursting 'Soggy eclairs that looked as if they had been kicked around the floor and warm chicken and duck sushi again looked beaten up. A warm tub of cottage cheese.' A second even accused the venue of having scammed them. They wrote: 'People are being scammed and not even realising it. 'You don't save money, I checked the next day the price of the food I got on the bakery and it was £4 for 2 croissants and 2 pastries. 'The Google play store deletes negative reviews. 4.9 stars this scamming app has there. trust pilot 3.5 stars. The scam goes up to Google management' On Reddit, people have also complained it has 'gone to s***'. 'I thought the whole point of the app was for restaurants to sell food that they already made but cant sell so they get rid of it instead of trashing it. 'I had to stop using the app because I kept getting restaurants giving me non menu items, basically they would just take leftover ingredients and make some stupid BS to sell. I also one time had them sell me a menu item but for more :( 'These companies are ruining the app because it ruins the whole purpose of Too Good To Go'. Other shoppers have accused sellers of 'using the app as a bin. Some customers say they paid for £11 worth of food just to get 'some rice' One person was given a smashed up cake on the app Earlier this year, Jade West ordered the food from the shopping app that sells surplus food at discount prices. She says she was so keen to get her hands on a surprise bag from her local Morrisons she ordered early on in the day. She paid £3.09 for two bags of food that were worth a total of £12. But after Jade collected her food later that evening, she said she was left disgusted at its contents. Inside, there was a variety of fruit and vegetables. This included three bunches of bananas that had turned black and appeared to have gone off. Jade also claimed a large head of cabbage had become discoloured. Other items included cherries, bean sprouts and carrots which she said also arrived in a bad state. Jade claimed: 'I know it's a gamble but when the food is mouldy, ripped open and inedible it's such a shame. 'I've tried [Too Good To Go] a couple of times and it's really not been worth my time. 'Also this wasn't a last minute purchase so they weren't in an unexpected rush to get something put in a bag for me. 'I'd ordered this quite early in the day for a 5.30pm collection. Others have complained of shops claiming to be giving away more food than they are. Elsewhere, an NHS worker was left in a fit of laughter after she ordered her first-ever Too Good to Go bag from Starbucks and got an underwhelming surprise. Tiegan, from Cumbria, purchased the item in the hopes of receiving sweet treats and a good variety of food from the coffee shop giant. The bag set her back £5.50 - which is around the cost of one hot food item at Starbucks - and she bought it from Lillyhall Service Station. But the 22-year-old was left amused after peering into the bag and pulling out two identical sandwiches and four chicken Caesar wraps. Tiegan, from Cumbria, purchased the item in the hopes of receiving sweet treats and a good variety of food from the coffee shop giant 'I bought my first-ever Too Good to Go bag from Starbucks and was left laughing after seeing what was inside the bag,' Tiegan said. 'In total, there were six items. Two ham sandwiches and four other items. 'As I pulled one item out of the bag, it was a chicken Caesar wrap. I then pulled out another, then another, then another. It was like an endless supply of Caesar wraps. 'Of course, I am aware Too Good To Go is food nearing its best-before date, but it's also food they haven't sold at the end of their shift.' Altogether, the bag's value came to around £25.60, meaning that Tiegan got more than £20 worth of food from Starbucks for free. Despite not enjoying chicken wraps, the NHS worker saw the funny side. Tiegan said: 'As a first-time buyer, reading the description for the surprise bag it states you could get a variety of paninis, sweet treats, bagels and juices. 'So I thought "Oh that's a good variety." It made me laugh as I continued pulling out chicken wraps. The food definitely didn't go to waste though and was thoroughly enjoyed.' However, Mr Thompson was less than impressed with his order once it arrived, claiming that even his dog would not touch it. NonePrime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi is set to attend the swearing-in ceremony of the new Mahayuti government in Maharashtra on the evening of December 5. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Devendra Fadnavis has emerged as the frontrunner for the chief minister's (CM) post, news agency PTI reported. The ceremony will take place at 5 pm in Azad Maidan, Mumbai, according to state BJP chief Chandrashekhar Bawankule. Bawankule confirmed in a post on X that PM Modi will be present at the swearing-in ceremony. Although no official announcement has been made regarding the chief ministerial candidate, BJP sources indicate that Fadnavis, who has served as CM twice and deputy CM in the previous Eknath Shinde-led government, is most likely to assume the role, according to PTI. Shinde, the current caretaker CM, had reportedly travelled to his hometown in Dare, Satara district, a day earlier, amid speculation that he was dissatisfied with how the new government was shaping up. An aide confirmed that Shinde had fallen ill with a temperature of 105°F. Shinde unwell, says Shiv Sena leader Shiv Sena leader Shambhuraj Desai, from Satara district, said Shinde had returned from Delhi with other party leaders on Friday morning after meeting top BJP officials. Since his return, Shinde had been unwell, suffering from a cough and cold. "Exertion affected him, so we advised him to take rest," he added. Sanjay Shirsat, a Shiv Sena leader close to Shinde, insisted that the home portfolio should be given to his party. Speaking to PTI, Shirsat also claimed there were attempts to sideline Shinde. Meanwhile, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Ajit Pawar stated that the CM will be from BJP, with deputy CMs from the Shiv Sena and his own party. Pawar has served as deputy CM in previous governments. A BJP leader stated that a meeting would be held on December 2 to elect the party's leader of the legislature, with Fadnavis likely to be appointed as CM. Shinde, who has served as CM since June 2022, attended a meeting of ruling alliance leaders with senior BJP leader Amit Shah in Delhi on Thursday evening. He had previously made it clear that he would accept any decision made by the top BJP leadership regarding the CM's post. Shinde is under pressure from some Shiv Sena leaders who believe he should not be made deputy CM, given his previous tenure as CM. However, other party leaders insist that he must be part of the new government. Differences within Mahayuti made Shinde return to village: Sanjay Raut The alliance, comprising the BJP, Shiv Sena, and NCP, secured a landslide victory in the November 23 state assembly elections. The BJP alone won 132 seats, followed by Shiv Sena with 57 and NCP with 41. The majority figure in the 288-member House is 145, meaning the alliance has comfortably surpassed this threshold. However, the formation of the government has been delayed due to disagreements over the chief ministerial post. Although appeared to have relinquished his claim to the top position, tensions resurfaced when a meeting of the allies on Friday was postponed, and he instead went to his village. The has already declared that Fadnavis is acceptable to them as chief minister. In contrast, from the rival Shiv Sena (UBT) claimed the "unnatural verdict" had delayed the selection of the chief minister and suggested that differences within the ruling alliance had driven Shinde to return to his village. Meanwhile, leaders of the Opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition, which suffered a defeat in the November 20 elections, expressed solidarity with social activist Baba Adhav. Adhav, who began a protest in Pune three days ago, is calling attention to the alleged misuse of Electronic Voting Machines in the recent elections. Senior NCP leader Sharad Pawar accused the ruling government of misusing power and money to control the election machinery.
SEOUL, South Korea — South Korean lawmakers impeached acting president Han Duck-soo on Friday, sinking the country even deeper into political crisis two weeks after his predecessor was suspended over a martial law declaration that shocked the world. Han, a career bureaucrat who was serving as prime minister, took over from President Yoon Suk Yeol on December 14 after parliament voted to impeach him on allegations of insurrection. Opposition MPs have now also stripped Han of his duties, arguing that he refused demands to complete Yoon’s impeachment process and to bring him to justice. “I announce that Prime Minister Han Duck-soo’s impeachment motion has passed. Out of the 192 lawmakers who voted, 192 voted to impeach,” said National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-shik. READ MORE: Democracies across the globe are at a crossroads South Korea’s opposition move to impeach President Yoon What we know about South Korea’s martial law Lawmakers from the ruling People’s Power Party (PPP) loudly protested in parliament after the speaker said only a simple majority was required for impeachment to pass, instead of the two-thirds required to remove Yoon. PPP lawmakers began chanting angrily, with many rushing towards Woo, demanding that he resign. They did not take part in the vote. In addition to being the second impeachment of a head of state in just two weeks, Friday’s vote was also South Korea’s first impeachment of an acting president. PPP leader Kweon Seong-dong said after the vote that Han “must continue to lead state affairs without yielding to the opposition’s passage of the impeachment motion”. However, Han said in a statement that he “respects the parliament’s decision” and would wait for the Constitutional Court’s subsequent decision on whether to uphold it. Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok, who is now stepping into the roles of both acting president and prime minister, pledged to do all he can to end the political upheaval gripping his country. “Minimising governmental turmoil is of utmost importance at this moment,” Choi said in an address shortly after his appointment as acting leader, adding that “the government will also dedicate all its efforts to overcoming this period of turmoil.” Amid the ongoing crisis, South Korea’s won touched a 16-year low against the US dollar on Friday, faring worse than in the immediate aftermath of Yoon’s martial law declaration, which sent the currency sliding to a two-year low against the greenback. Seoul’s stocks also tumbled, with the KOSPI Index closing down by 1.02 percent on Friday. At the heart of the backlash against Han was his refusal to appoint additional judges to the Constitutional Court, which will decide whether to uphold parliament’s decision to impeach Yoon, and now Han as well. The court is currently short of three judges. While it can go ahead with its six members on the bench, a single dissenting vote would reinstate Yoon. The opposition wanted Han to approve three more nominees to fill the nine-member bench, which he had refused to do, leaving both sides in deadlock. Han’s refusal to formally appoint more judges “revealed his true colours”, said Democratic Party lawmaker Jo Seoung-lae. The refusal “is a direct challenge to the Constitution and the law”, said Jo. The opposition said in its impeachment motion that Han was “intentionally avoiding the special investigation to probe those involved in the insurrection and has clearly stated his intention to reject the appointments of three Constitutional Court judges”. Such actions, it said, were “in violation of a public official’s duty to uphold the law... and serve the public”. Han had said he wanted his PPP and the opposition to reach a compromise on the nominees. “The consistent principle embedded in our constitution and laws is to refrain from exercising significant exclusive presidential powers, including the appointment of constitutional institutions,” Han argued. “A consensus between the ruling and opposition parties in the National Assembly, representing the people, must first be reached,” the 75-year-old said. The Constitutional Court held its first preliminary hearing on the validity of Yoon’s impeachment on Friday despite the latest controversy, with the suspended president’s legal team attending. Separately, police said they had begun a raid on a presidential safe house and were collecting footage from nearby security cameras as part of the martial law probe.Advisors Asset Management Inc. reduced its stake in shares of Samsara Inc.
