Martinez had gone eight matches since last finding the back of the net against Venezia on November 3 but after Alessandro Bastoni opened the scoring in the 54th minute, the Argentina international struck in Sardinia. The Inter captain took his tally against Cagliari to 10 goals in as many games after 71 minutes before Hakan Calhanoglu capped an excellent night for the visitors from the penalty spot a few moments later. Gian Piero Gasperini’s side were grateful for a point in the end after falling behind to Fisayo Dele-Bashiru’s first-half strike, only drawing level with two minutes remaining thanks to Marco Brescianini. Jigawa State Government said it has invested more than N20billion in education in less than two years, leading to a number of teachers in the state teaching service jumping to 5,986 from 2,566 where it stood in 2023, with additional school infrastructure offered to provide a quality learning environment. The State Commissioner for Higher Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Isa Chamo, made this known at the weekend on the sideline of the 14th Anniversary and Award Ceremonies of the Nigerian NewsDirect, which was held in Lagos. The commissioner, who was part of the top government functionaries dispatched to receive the newspaper’s Governor of the Year Award in Agro-Investments and Security for Namadi, noted that the governor had recorded a giant push for higher education in the state by employing over 3000 teachers and building school infrastructure to provide a quality learning environment. “Governor Namadi spent over N20,000,000,000, invested in education in Jigawa state under the present administration,” Chamo said. He said that the number of teachers in the state was raised from 2, 566 in May 2023, to 5,986, adding that the administration had procured and distributed over 10,000 3-seater desks for students while 5,000 staff furniture were provided at various schools. Chamo further added that a total of 3,500 double beds were procured and distributed to boarding schools with 3,840 mattresses to go with, disclosing that 564 tabs were distributed to senior secondary school principals to enhance digital learning skills amongst teachers while 300 routers were procured and distributed. Besides, the commissioner said the Namadi’s administration had ensured the provision of internet connectivity across the 293 senior secondary schools in the state to ensure access to a wide range of educational and information resources. According to him, over N200 million has been used to develop a digital teaching and learning platform tagged J-Compete programme, saying that this had helped both teachers and students with numerous resources in the learning environment. This was just as he disclosed that Governor Namadi’s administration had improved school feeding by 200 per cent from N180 per student to N450 per student, saying that this had made expenditure for school feeding programme to rise from N1.1 billion to N3.4 billion annually. Speaking further, Chamo said that the government had equally carried out various capacity training programmes for teachers, school principals and directors to enhance their capacity, adding that the administration had carried out several interventions, including Femalethe Teacher Development Scheme, Girls for Health Programme, free schools uniforms for girls, registration fees for law students, among others. Also speaking, Technical Adviser to Governor Umar Namadi on Basic Education, Dr. Hauwa Alhassan, said that the administration had taken basic education to the top of the ladder. She said that the governor had, with the implementation and success of the J-Teach Programme, addressed the shortage of teachers in rural and underserved areas, “with notable improvements in teaching quality and student engagement.” Alhassan said that the state had improved collaboration with NGOs and strong partnerships with organisations like PLAN and PLANE for educational development and empowerment of educators. “The administration has enhanced inclusion of children with disabilities, introduced specialised programmes and infrastructure, to ensure access to quality education for children with disabilities,” she said. Speaking further, Alhassan said that the governor had invested in Nomadic Schools, pointing out that such move had “expanded educational opportunities for nomadic communities, ensuring access to education irrespective of their mobility.” Besides, she said strategic interventions were made under Namadi’s administration to revert the schools used as IDP camps back into functional educational institutions, noting that the governor had put a special focus on Early Childhood Education, foundational literacy and numeracy programmes. Meanwhile, Governor Namadi, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Malam Bala Ibrahim, to receive the award, said he was pleased with the recognition, expressing happiness that his contributions to the development of his state and the people were being acknowledged. Ibrahim said Governor Namadi was highly elated with the recognition of his investments in agriculture, security, education and health for the benefit of the people, saying that the award would serve as an inspiration to do more and work for the betterment of the people of Jigawa. REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. , Dec. 5, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Reichman Jorgensen Lehman & Feldberg LLP (RJLF) has filed a lawsuit on behalf of a coalition of manufacturers, businesses, affordable housing interests, and workers seeking to prevent enforcement of South Coast Air Quality Management District regulations that effectively ban certain gas appliances. The plaintiffs, representing thousands of California residents, businesses, and workers, include Rinnai America Corporation , Noritz America Corporation , National Association of Homebuilders , California Manufacturers & Technology Association , California Restaurant Association , California Hotel & Lodging Association , and California Apartment Association , all represented by RJLF and Sean Kneafsey of the Kneafsey Law Firm . Californians for Homeownership is represented by Matt Gelfand , Restaurant Law Center is represented by Angelo Amador , and the California State Pipe Trades Council by McCracken, Stemerman & Holsberry . The coalition's suit asserts that the District's zero-NOx emissions rule for certain appliances, which effectively bans those gas appliances, is preempted by the federal Energy Policy and Conservation Act (EPCA) and should be blocked. The District's rule not only effectively mandates the use of electric appliances in new buildings but also forces costly retrofits to electric in existing buildings when appliances are replaced. This rule threatens the reliability and affordability of energy for millions of Californians, will impose enormous costs and disruption on businesses and workers, and will reduce the availability of affordable housing. Earlier this year, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit held that Berkeley, California's ban on gas piping in new buildings was preempted by EPCA ( California Restaurant Association v. City of Berkeley , 89 F.4th 1094 (9th Cir. 2024)) . The District's rule is legally indistinguishable, and the same result applies. "This case is pivotal to reinforcing the federal and state roles in setting national energy policy," said Sarah Jorgensen , lead counsel for the plaintiffs at RJLF. "The District's mandate for electric appliances in both new construction and forced retrofits not only jeopardizes our clients' work, business, and interests but also disregards established federal law. California must comply with the law." The case is Rinnai America Corp. et al. v. South Coast Air Quality Management District , No. 2:24-cv-10482 , in the United States District Court for the Central District of California . AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Any Texas or Texas A&M player has heard the lore of the rivalry between the two schools, a grudge match that dates to 1894. But for more than a decade — two generations of college football players — that's all it has been: Ghostly memories of great games and great plays made by heroes of the distant past. That changes this week when one of college football's great rivalries is reborn. Third-ranked Texas (10-1, 6-1) and No. 20 Texas A&M (8-3, 5-2) meet Saturday night for the first time since 2011, with a berth in the Southeastern Conference championship game on the line . “Guys that have been in my position and bleed burnt orange, they have not gotten to play this game,” said Texas fourth-year junior safety Michael Taaffe, who grew up in Austin. “Remember them when you step on Kyle Field.” For Aggies fans, who have carried the misery of Texas' 27-25 win in 2011, getting the Longhorns back in front of a frenzied crowd in College Station is a chance for some serious payback. “I was born and raised an Aggie, so I’ve been dreaming about playing in this game my whole life,” Texas A&M offensive lineman Trey Zuhn III said. Zuhn played high school football in Colorado, but his parents and grandparents attended A&M. At SEC media days back in August, Zuhn said his family would turn Texas gear upside down in stores. He keeps a picture of a longhorn in his room, hanging upside down, of course. “It should be the most amazing atmosphere that I’ve ever experienced,” Zuhn said. "I can’t wait for that, and I feel bad for Texas having to play in that." Texas players said they are ready. “That place is going to be rocking,” Texas senior cornerback Jahdae Barron said. “It's good to go on the road and play in hostile environments.” The Longhorns have overcome big and loud road crowds before. They won at Alabama in 2023. They won at Michigan and Arkansas, another old rival, this year. The Longhorns have won 10 in a row on an opponent’s home field. “When the hate is on us, we love it. We enjoy it,” Taaffe said. But some former Texas players say the current group has faced nothing like what awaits them in College Station. Playing at Texas A&M is more than just noise and a lot of “Horns down” hand signals. The “Aggie War Hymn” fight song calls for Aggies to “Saw varsity’s horns off." Beating Texas is their passion, said former Longhorns All-American offensive lineman Dan Neil, who won at Texas A&M in in 1995. He calls that win one of the best of his career. “I was done showering and getting ready to leave, and their fans were still standing outside the locker room screaming and throwing things,” he said. “The (Texas) players have no idea what they are walking into. They have no clue. No one on that team has walked into that stadium in burnt orange.” The rivalry broke up when Texas A&M left the Big 12 for the SEC in 2012. The Aggies have twice finished tied for second but have otherwise found little success there. Texas is in its first year in the SEC and has smashed its way to the top. Texas is the only SEC team with one loss this late in the season, which would make beating Texas that much sweeter for A&M. “The hype is definitely saying it's a rivalry. History says it's a rivalry, but for us, it's the football game we have this week,” Texas senior center Jake Majors said. “It's important for us to not let the environment, the game, get the best of us. ... I get to go out there and play not only for me and my team, but for the guys who came before me, so that's a true honor to have.” Even though the game hasn't been played since 2011, there has always been an element of the rivalry simmering under the surface, Texas A&M coach Mike Elko said. Elko is in his first year as the Aggies' coach, but he was the Texas A&M defensive coordinator under Jimbo Fisher from 2018-2021. “Even though it hasn’t been played, it just doesn’t feel like it’s ever really left the fabric. I really don’t think it’s as removed from the psyche as maybe it feels,” Elko said. “I think our kids are very much aware of what this is all about.” ___ Rieken reported from College Station, Texas. ___ Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. China presses ahead with plans to build mega-dam near IndiaWheeler Dealers’ star Mike Brewer has revealed the best second-hand used cars on the market with one brand coming out on top. Nissan’s popular Qashqai secured the top prize with the SUV still the best all-rounder on the market. Mike got behind the wheel of Car Dealer Magazine’s award-winning models which he helped select as part of the judging panel. The Qashqai was followed with some stellar pics with models from Vauxhall , Land Rover, Audi and Toyota also making the cut. Express.co.uk breaks down Mike’s top picks with those on the lookout for a second-hand pick in the New Year set to benefit. The car that started the SUV craze in the UK is still considered the top option for second-hand car buyers with the model scoping the ‘Used Car of the Year’ prize. Described as a "jack of all trades" machine ideal for families, the model is a mainstay in UK cities with models flying off the shelves. The model also scooped Car Dealer Magazine’s used Mid-Size Car of the Year award with Mike praising the British-built model for its revolutionary impact. He said: "What a car it is, they are just uber reliable, really handsome these days, they've come a long way in terms of their styling. They are so practical. It’s a car that sort of does everything.” Mike said the model has that “big car feel”, praising it for plenty of space in the cabin with a multi-functional steering wheel for drivers with a packed infotainment system. The Wheeler Dealers’ state claimed there was some questionable material on the inside but defended Vauxhall with the brand of targeting the premium car sector. You can buy it across multiple powertrains with petrol, diesel and electric options now available. He also highlighted that accessibility was crucial with various models available. He said: “You can really get going with this little car. See, it puts a smile on my face And that’s why, we, me and the judges love the little Corsa and that’s why it's our winner of the Best Small Car.” Mike praised Land Rover for doing a “cracking job” with their Defender model which picked up the Best Luxury Vehicle award earlier this year. Mike admitted he ran one of these cars last winter and admitted he felt "very special” behind the wheel. He said: "It just gets you down the road nice and comfy and makes you feel very important, I dare say there’s not a single five-star hotel anywhere across the lad that wouldn't be proud to park this right outside the front.” Mike described the RS4 estate as one of the “most dynamic performance cars” he has ever driven. The stunning model certainly packs a punch with 400bhp generating a top speed of 186mph. The machine, which secured the Used Performance Car of the Year award, can reach 0-60mph in 3.7 seconds. Mike added: “See you Ferrari in my rear-view mirror. I love it in the mid-range this car is so good. It pushes you in the back of your chair and makes you feel a little bit queasy in the stomach. It really does play around with your internal organs this car. Which is the bit about it I love.” Mike described the Yaris as a “little executive express” as he praised the Used AFV Car of the Year winner for an interior packed full of technology. All of the tools available in the bigger Prius are fitted in the Yaris making this almost the “best of both worlds”. He said: “Being a Toyota you know it’s going to be uber reliable, it's going to have a really good warranty and they fly off the forecourts."
PAMPANGA, Philippines – If you have prayers that need urgent answers, or are in a predicament that requires divine intervention, offer an egg to Sta. Clara and expect a favorable result – sometimes even something short of a miracle. It may sound like an old wives’ tale or even a case of blind faith, but devotees of St. Claire have a firm belief in this. The tradition of visiting the Monastery of Sta. Clara in Betis, Guagua, Pampanga, and offering eggs in exchange for the inclusion of your pleadings to the prayers of the contemplative sisters of the Order of St. Claire (OSC) is a deeply-rooted practice of Filipino Catholics. Sor Ma. Analiza C. de Jesus, OSC, mother abbess of the Betis monastery said that it is almost like a reflex for the Catholics in Guagua to turn to St. Claire, specially for those about to take board exams or childless married couples. The entrance to the chapel of the contemplative sisters of the Order of St Claire. The Monasterio in Betis opened 56 years ago. “Every person who steps in the grounds of the monastery is blessed by St. Claire” said Sor Ma. Analiza. A statue of St. Claire of Asisi greets all those who enter the monastery premises. Warm Welcome. At the entrance of the monastery, the statue of Sta. Clara welcomes devotees. Home of hope and prayers Patricia Bautista, describes herself as a devotee of Sta. Clara. She said she survived her student-life through the intercession of St. Claire. Her devotion started from her early childhood, a trait she inherited from her parents who are also devotees of Sta. Clara. In fact, Patricia’s mother prayed hard to the saint in order to conceive a child, making Patricia a “fruit” of her mother’s faith. Patricia’s connection deepened when she was in college. “ Nung una, kung saan school ako papasok for college tsaka ano program, nanghingi ako ng signs . ( At first, I asked for signs on where I will go for college and the course I will take.)” During her years as a medical technology student, Patricia always sought the guidance of St. Claire, which she believes ultimately helped her pass her licensing exams. Solemn Sanctuary. The interior of the monastery that makes the people at peace Solemn sanctuary On the other hand, Mariet Garcia, 61, a government employee and a devotee since she was 21 years old, said she still finds peace inside the monastery. “‘ Pag andun ka, parang at peace ako... Pag nakatitig ako sa kanya. parang ang amo-amo. ‘di ko ma-explain ang feeling ”. (When you’re there, it’s like I’m at peace... When I look into her eyes, it’s like they’re so gentle. I can’t explain the feeling.) Eyes of Peace | Devotees are noted to feel peace and serenity when praying to St. Claire She said that the saint helped her reach God with her prayers for family, career, and personal peace through her participation in the annual 9-day novena during its feast day. Same goes for Leah Vizcayno, a housewife and devotee of 20 years, who “ pag may specially intention nagbibigay kami ng itlog or by tray .” The feast day of St. Claire is every August 11. Traditions of faith Like all monasteries of the contemplative nuns of the Order of St Claire, the monastery in Betis is known for the tradition of offering help for prayer intentions of devotees. Another way devotees show their faith to Sta. Clara is through a street dance like those in Obando town in Bulacan. Childless couples participate in this tradition during the feast of Sta. Clara, dancing to the song of “ Santa Clarang Pinung-Pino ” in hopes of being blessed with an offspring. This is usually accompanied by an offering of egg. Place for offering. Devotees of St. Claire can leave their offerings at the side of the chapel. Sor. Ma. Analiza said that the eggs are not simply a tradition but a symbol for its devotees. According to her, “ ang klaro nila, is the same as St. Claire, clarity. ” These eggs are not only consumed by the contemplatives at the monastery but they are also donated to different seminaries and orphanages. “ Lahat tayo may backer sa taas ” Vizcanyo said. This has put the notion that when in need, you can always go to Sta. Clara and your prayers will be answered. But the intention of going to the monastery solely for guidance and a specific intention does not worry the congregation. Sor. Ma. Analiza is positive that the more they hold on to their faith to Sta. Clara, guidance will be given even if the intention is not granted. “It is a choice. Nakadepende pa rin sa akin if I’m taking actions towards my intentions” Bautista the devotee added. (It is a choice. It still depends on me if I’m taking actions toward my intentions.) And in the coming years, as St. Claire continues to be an beacon of hope for many, so that even when there have no problems, devotees still visit what they know as a peaceful sanctuary. – Rappler.com Aya Ranas is a 2nd year Communication student and a scholar at National University Clark, Pampanga. Tulsi Gabbard , Donald Trump's pick to be national intelligence director. The former officials, who served in both Democratic and Republican administrations, said they were "alarmed" by the choice of Gabbard to oversee all 18 U.S. intelligence agencies. They said her past actions "call into question her ability to deliver unbiased intelligence briefings to the President, Congress, and to the entire national security apparatus." A spokesperson for Gabbard on the Trump transition team on Thursday denounced the appeal as an "unfounded" and "partisan" attack. Among those who signed the letter were former Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman, former NATO Deputy Secretary General Rose Gottemoeller, former national security adviser Anthony Lake, and numerous retired ambassadors and high-ranking military officers. They wrote to current Democratic Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and incoming Republican Majority Leader John Thune on Wednesday to urge the closed briefings as part of the Senate's review of Trump's top appointments. They urged that Senate committees "consider in closed sessions all information available to the U.S. government when considering Ms. Gabbard's qualifications to manage our country's intelligence agencies, and more importantly, the protection of our intelligence sources and methods." The letter singles out Gabbard's 2017 meetings in Syria with President Bashar Assad, who is supported by Russian, Iranian and Iranian-allied forces in a now 13-year war against Syrian opposition forces seeking his overthrow. The U.S., which cut relations with Assad's government and imposed sanctions over his conduct of the war, maintains about 900 troops in opposition-controlled northeast Syria, saying they are needed to block a resurgence of extremist groups. Gabbard, a Democratic member of Congress from Hawaii at the time of her Syria trip, drew heavy criticism for her meetings with a U.S. adversary and brutal leader. As the letter notes, her statements on the wars in the Middle East and Ukraine have aligned with Russian talking points, diverging from U.S. positions and policy. Gabbard, throughout her political career, has urged the U.S. to limit military engagement abroad other than combatting Islamic extremist groups. She has defended the Syria trip by saying it is necessary to engage with U.S. enemies. In postings on social media earlier this year, she confirmed that the U.S. had for a time placed her "on a secret terror watch list" as a "potential domestic terror threat." She blamed political retaliation. Neither she nor U.S. authorities have publicly detailed the circumstances involved. Alexa Henning, a spokesperson for Gabbard with the Trump team, called the letter sent to the Senate leaders "a perfect example" of why Trump chose Gabbard for this position. "These unfounded attacks are from the same geniuses who have blood on their hands from decades of faulty 'intelligence,'" and use classified government information as a "partisan weapon to smear and imply things about their political enemy," Henning said. A spokesperson for Thune did not immediately respond to questions about the request.
Former Australian bowler Ryan Harris has fired back at “rubbish” claims from Indian legend Sunil Gavaskar over Josh Hazlewood’s side strain injury, which will see him sidelined from the second Test in Adelaide. Watch every ball of Australia v India LIVE & ad-break free during play in 4K on Kayo | New to Kayo? Get your first month for just $1. Limited time offer. MATCH CENTRE: Australia vs India second Test scorecard, live updates The action gets back underway on Friday at 3pm, with Scott Boland returning in place of Hazlewood in Australia’s only change to the starting XI that was comfortably defeated by India in Perth. Hazlewood’s comments during the first Test sparked suggestions of a potential divide in the Australian dressing room, although teammates were quick to dismiss those claims. But according to Gavaskar, the fact Hazlewood is now unavailable due to injury should be raising eyebrows in the Australian media. Gavaskar said earlier in the week that the Australian fast bowler’s side strain injury was “strange” and a “mystery”, seemingly hinting his non-selection may instead be connected to his comments during the first Test. Travis Head said he was “surprised” to hear that insinuation from Gavaskar while Harris was far more direct, describing it as “rubbish” in an interview with the Indian Express . “Look, there are no, factions. That’s just all garbage,” Harris said. “I’ve even heard Mr Gavaskar coming out and saying there’s some faction. It’s all rubbish. That doesn’t happen in Australia. I know it happens in India. I’ve lived there. “There’s no politics and no, you don’t miss a game for saying what he (Hazlewood) said. “I’ve spoken to a couple of the boys here at and everyone’s smart. They just know our media and how they work. The Australian media have jumped on it, because we went so bad in Perth. But you’re allowed to be outplayed.” Harris went on to stress that he has “all the respect” for Gavaskar, calling him a “legend of the game”. “He is just throwing a little grenade over here and the media have just got hold of him and are having a feast,” added Harris. Hazlewood, who took five wickets in Australia’s 295-run loss at Perth, will remain with the group in Adelaide to prepare for the remainder of the series according to Cricket Australia. Boland, Hazlewood’s replacement, played the last of his 10 Tests in July 2023 against England at Headingley. MCSWEENEY VOWS TO ‘SHOW WHAT I CAN DO’ AFTER BAPTISM OF FIRE Elsewhere, Australian opener Nathan McSweeney has vowed to “show everyone what I can do” when the second Test against India begins on familiar territory in Adelaide on Friday. The 25-year-old was under the spotlight when he made his debut for his country in the first Test of the five-match series last month in Perth. McSweeney had only ever opened once before at first-class level and he scored 10 and nought as a rampant India won by 295 runs, with fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah his and Australia’s chief tormentor. “I got two pretty good balls over there in Perth, so I’m not trying to dwell on it too much and look forward to Adelaide,” McSweeney told Cricket Australia’s media arm. “I’ve played well out here, and it’s my home ground,” he said of the Adelaide Oval, which will host the day-night second Test. “So I’m looking forward to getting in front of a home crowd and most importantly, a wicket that I’ve played heaps of cricket on and that I know really well.” McSweeney got the nod to open the batting alongside Usman Khawaja in Perth on the back of an impressive start to the domestic season. Two of his six career Sheffield Shield centuries have come at the Adelaide Oval and he averages just over 43 in first-class games there, according to Cricket Australia. He admits however that the “pink ball is a little bit new to me”. “But we’ll be training here under lights a few times this week. So we’ve got some prep to do and I feel like I missed out last match, but my game’s still in a good spot.” He added: “If I can make sure I nail my prep and then spend some time in the middle, I can take great confidence from that. “The beauty of this series is you don’t have to wait too long to get another opportunity, so definitely take some learnings from Perth and hopefully execute what I want to do here in Adelaide. “It’s another opportunity for me to go out there and show everyone what I can do.” LIVE BLOG Follow all the latest updates from the second Test in our blog below! Chiefs edge Panthers, Lions rip Colts as Dallas stuns Washington
By JILL COLVIN and STEPHEN GROVES WASHINGTON (AP) — After several weeks working mostly behind closed doors, Vice President-elect JD Vance returned to Capitol Hill this week in a new, more visible role: Helping Donald Trump try to get his most contentious Cabinet picks to confirmation in the Senate, where Vance has served for the last two years. Vance arrived at the Capitol on Wednesday with former Rep. Matt Gaetz and spent the morning sitting in on meetings between Trump’s choice for attorney general and key Republicans, including members of the Senate Judiciary Committee. The effort was for naught: Gaetz announced a day later that he was withdrawing his name amid scrutiny over sex trafficking allegations and the reality that he was unlikely to be confirmed. Thursday morning Vance was back, this time accompanying Pete Hegseth, the “Fox & Friends Weekend” host whom Trump has tapped to be the next secretary of defense. Hegseth also has faced allegations of sexual assault that he denies. Vance is expected to accompany other nominees for meetings in coming weeks as he tries to leverage the two years he has spent in the Senate to help push through Trump’s picks. Scott Applewhite) The role of introducing nominees around Capitol Hill is an unusual one for a vice president-elect. Usually the job goes to a former senator who has close relationships on the Hill, or a more junior aide. But this time the role fits Vance, said Marc Short, who served as Trump’s first director of legislative affairs as well as chief of staff to Trump’s first vice president, Mike Pence, who spent more than a decade in Congress and led the former president’s transition ahead of his first term. ”JD probably has a lot of current allies in the Senate and so it makes sense to have him utilized in that capacity,” Short said. Unlike the first Trump transition, which played out before cameras at Trump Tower in New York and at the president-elect’s golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, this one has largely happened behind closed doors in Palm Beach, Florida. There, a small group of officials and aides meet daily at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort to run through possible contenders and interview job candidates. The group includes Elon Musk, the billionaire who has spent so much time at the club that Trump has joked he can’t get rid of him. Vance has been a constant presence, even as he’s kept a lower profile. The Ohio senator has spent much of the last two weeks in Palm Beach, according to people familiar with his plans, playing an active role in the transition, on which he serves as honorary chair. Vance has been staying at a cottage on the property of the gilded club, where rooms are adorned with cherubs, oriental rugs and intricate golden inlays. It’s a world away from the famously hardscrabble upbringing that Vance documented in the memoir that made him famous, “Hillbilly Elegy.” His young children have also joined him at Mar-a-Lago, at times. Vance was photographed in shorts and a polo shirt playing with his kids on the seawall of the property with a large palm frond, a U.S. Secret Service robotic security dog in the distance. On the rare days when he is not in Palm Beach, Vance has been joining the sessions remotely via Zoom. Though he has taken a break from TV interviews after months of constant appearances, Vance has been active in the meetings, which began immediately after the election and include interviews and as well as presentations on candidates’ pluses and minuses. Among those interviewed: Contenders to replace FBI Director Christopher Wray , as Vance wrote in a since-deleted social media post. Defending himself from criticism that he’d missed a Senate vote in which one of President Joe Biden’s judicial nominees was confirmed, Vance wrote that he was meeting at the time “with President Trump to interview multiple positions for our government, including for FBI Director.” “I tend to think it’s more important to get an FBI director who will dismantle the deep state than it is for Republicans to lose a vote 49-46 rather than 49-45,” Vance added on X. “But that’s just me.” While Vance did not come in to the transition with a list of people he wanted to see in specific roles, he and his friend, Trump’s eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., who is also a member of the transition team, were eager to see former Democratic Rep. Tulsi Gabbard and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. find roles in the administration. Trump ended up selecting Gabbard as the next director of national intelligence , a powerful position that sits atop the nation’s spy agencies and acts as the president’s top intelligence adviser. And he chose Kennedy to lead the Department of Health and Human Services , a massive agency that oversees everything from drug and food safety to Medicare and Medicaid. Vance was also a big booster of Tom Homan, the former acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, who will serve as Trump’s “border czar.” In another sign of Vance’s influence, James Braid, a top aide to the senator, is expected to serve as Trump’s legislative affairs director. Allies say it’s too early to discuss what portfolio Vance might take on in the White House. While he gravitates to issues like trade, immigration and tech policy, Vance sees his role as doing whatever Trump needs. Vance was spotted days after the election giving his son’s Boy Scout troop a tour of the Capitol and was there the day of leadership elections. He returned in earnest this week, first with Gaetz — arguably Trump’s most divisive pick — and then Hegseth, who has was been accused of sexually assaulting a woman in 2017, according to an investigative report made public this week. Hegseth told police at the time that the encounter had been consensual and denied any wrongdoing. Vance hosted Hegseth in his Senate office as GOP senators, including those who sit on the Senate Armed Services Committee, filtered in to meet with the nominee for defense secretary. While a president’s nominees usually visit individual senators’ offices, meeting them on their own turf, the freshman senator — who is accompanied everywhere by a large Secret Service detail that makes moving around more unwieldy — instead brought Gaetz to a room in the Capitol on Wednesday and Hegseth to his office on Thursday. Senators came to them. Vance made it to votes Wednesday and Thursday, but missed others on Thursday afternoon. Vance is expected to continue to leverage his relationships in the Senate after Trump takes office. But many Republicans there have longer relationships with Trump himself. Sen. Kevin Cramer, a North Dakota Republican, said that Trump was often the first person to call him back when he was trying to reach high-level White House officials during Trump’s first term. “He has the most active Rolodex of just about anybody I’ve ever known,” Cramer said, adding that Vance would make a good addition. “They’ll divide names up by who has the most persuasion here,” Cramer said, but added, “Whoever his liaison is will not work as hard at it as he will.” Cramer was complimentary of the Ohio senator, saying he was “pleasant” and ” interesting” to be around. ′′He doesn’t have the long relationships,” he said. “But we all like people that have done what we’ve done. I mean, that’s sort of a natural kinship, just probably not as personally tied.” Under the Constitution, Vance will also have a role presiding over the Senate and breaking tie votes. But he’s not likely to be needed for that as often as was Kamala Harris, who broke a record number of ties for Democrats as vice president, since Republicans will have a bigger cushion in the chamber next year. Colvin reported from New York. Associated Press writer Mary Clare Jalonick contributed to this report.

Pete Tychsen, President & Founder of Preservation Financial Group Interviewed on the Influential Entrepreneur Podcast Discussing Having a Retirement Income Plan in Writing 11-22-2024 09:54 PM CET | Business, Economy, Finances, Banking & Insurance Press release from: Getnews / PR Agency: Authority Press Wire Image: https://authoritypresswire.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Headshot-PeteTychsen.jpg Pete Tychsen discusses having a retirement income plan in writing Listen to the interview on the Business Innovators Radio Network: https://businessinnovatorsradio.com/pete-tychsen-president-and-founder-of-preservation-financial-group-discussing-having-a-retirement-income-plan-in-writing/ Pete Tychsen, the president and founder of Preservation Financial Group. They discuss the importance of having a retirement income plan in writing, emphasizing that while knowledge is powerful, it needs to be put into action to be truly effective. Pete shares a compelling analogy about climbing Mount Everest, illustrating that the goal of a retirement plan isn't just about reaching financial milestones, but also about ensuring a safe and secure return to stability in one's financial life. A written retirement income plan is essential for ensuring financial stability throughout retirement, extending beyond merely reaching retirement age. This concept is emphasized in the podcast episode featuring Pete Tychsen, president and founder of Preservation Financial Group. Below are several key points that underscore the significance of having a structured and documented approach to retirement income planning. Many individuals concentrate on accumulating wealth for retirement, but the real challenge lies in effectively distributing that wealth once retirement begins. As Pete Tychsen points out, the goal is not just to reach retirement but to navigate through it successfully. This requires a clear plan that outlines how to draw from various income sources without risking running out of money. A written retirement income plan helps individuals understand their income needs during retirement. It provides a detailed analysis of various income sources, such as Social Security, pensions, and personal savings. By documenting this information, retirees can better assess how much they can withdraw each year while ensuring their funds last throughout their retirement years. A critical aspect of a retirement income plan is assessing risk tolerance. As discussed in the episode, many individuals may not realize how much risk they are taking with their investments as they approach retirement. For instance, Bob and Mary, a couple mentioned in the podcast, were shocked to learn that 74% of their assets were exposed to stock market risk, despite their comfort level being only an 8-10% loss. A written plan allows for a thorough review of investment strategies and helps align them with the retiree's risk tolerance, ensuring they are not overly exposed to market fluctuations. Pete shared: "I take the Boring and the Complex and make it simpler for a more Worry-Free Retirement." The concept of "creating paychecks for life" is central to a successful retirement income plan. This involves determining which accounts to draw from first and how to structure withdrawals to maintain a steady income stream. Without a written plan, retirees may find themselves unsure of how to manage their finances, leading to unnecessary stress and potential financial instability. A retirement income plan is not a one-time task; it requires regular reviews and adjustments. As Pete emphasizes, life circumstances, market conditions, and personal needs can change, making it essential to revisit the plan periodically. This ongoing evaluation ensures that the plan remains relevant and effective in meeting the retiree's financial goals. Ultimately, having a written retirement income plan provides peace of mind. Knowing that there is a structured approach to managing retirement funds allows individuals to focus on enjoying their retirement rather than worrying about financial uncertainties. As Pete states, once a plan is in place and tested, retirees can rest assured that their money will last as long as they need it.
