The new, 12-team College Football Playoff brings with it a promise to be bigger, more exciting, more lucrative. Perfect or 100% fair? Well, nobody ever believed that. The first expanded playoff bracket unveiled Sunday left a presumably deserving Alabama team on the sideline in favor of an SMU squad that finished with a better record after playing a schedule that was not as difficult. It ranked undefeated Oregon first but set up a possible rematch against Ohio State, the team that came closest to beating the Ducks this year. It treated underdog Boise State like a favorite and banged-up Georgia like a world beater at No. 2. It gave Ohio State home-field advantage against Tennessee for reasons it would take a supercomputer to figure out. It gave the sport the multiweek tournament it has longed for, but also ensured there will be plenty to grouse about between now and when the trophy is handed out on Jan. 20 after what will easily be the longest college football season in history. All of it, thankfully, will be sorted out on the field starting with first-round games on campuses Dec. 20 and 21, then over three succeeding rounds that will wind their way through traditional bowl sites. Maybe Oregon coach Dan Lanning, whose undefeated Ducks are the favorite to win it all, put it best when he offered: "Winning a national championship is not supposed to be easy.” Neither, it turns out, is figuring out who should play for it. The Big Ten will lead the way with four teams in the tournament, followed by the SEC with three and the ACC with two. The lasting memory from the inaugural bracket will involve the decision that handed the ACC that second bid. Alabama of the SEC didn't play Saturday. SMU of the ACC did. The Mustangs fell behind by three touchdowns to Clemson before coming back to tie. But they ultimately lost 34-31 on a 56-yard field goal as time expired. “We were on pins and needles,” SMU coach Rhett Lashley said. “Until we saw the name ‘SMU’ up there, we were hanging on the edge. We're really, really happy and thankful to the committee for rewarding our guys for their total body of work." The Mustangs only had two losses, compared to three for the Crimson Tide. Even though SMU's schedule wasn't nearly as tough, the committee was impressed by the way the Mustangs came back against Clemson. “We just felt, in this particular case, SMU had the nod above Alabama,” said Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel, the chairman of the selection committee. “But it’s no disrespect to Alabama’s strength of schedule. We looked at the entire body of work for both teams.” Alabama athletic director Greg Byrne was gracious, up to a point. “Disappointed with the outcome and felt we were one of the 12 best teams in the country,” he said on social media. He acknowledged — despite all of Alabama’s losses coming against conference opponents this season — that the Tide’s push to schedule more games against teams from other major conferences in order to improve its strength of schedule did not pay off this time. “That is not good for college football," Byrne said. Georgia, the SEC champion, was seeded second; Boise State, the Mountain West champion, earned the third seed; and Big 12 titlist Arizona State got the fourth seed and the fourth and final first-round bye. All will play in quarterfinals at bowl games on Dec. 31-Jan. 1. Clemson stole a bid and the 12th seed with its crazy win over SMU, the result that ultimately cost Alabama a spot in the field. The Tigers moved to No. 16 in the rankings, but got in as the fifth-best conference winner. The conference commissioners' idea to give conference champions preferable treatment in this first iteration of the 12-team playoff could be up for reconsideration after this season. The committee actually ranked Boise State, the Mountain West Champion, at No. 9 and Big 12 champion Arizona State at No. 12, but both get to skip the first round. Another CFP guideline: There’s no reseeding of teams after each round, which means no break for Oregon. The top-seeded Ducks will face the winner of Tennessee-Ohio State in the Rose Bowl. Oregon beat Ohio State 32-31 earlier this year in one of the season’s best games. No. 12 Clemson at No. 5 Texas, Dec. 21. Clemson is riding high after the SMU upset, while Texas is 0-2 against Georgia and 11-0 vs. everyone else this season. The winner faces ... Arizona State in the Peach Bowl. Huh? No. 11 SMU at No. 6 Penn State, Dec. 21. The biggest knock against the Mustangs was that they didn't play any big boys with that 60th-ranked strength of schedule. Well, now they get to. The winner faces ... Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl. Yes, SMU vs. Boise was the quarterfinal we all expected. No. 10 Indiana at No. 7 Notre Dame, Dec. 20. Hoosiers coach Curt Cignetti thought his team deserved a home game. Well, not quite but close. The winner faces ... Georgia in the Sugar Bowl. The Bulldogs got the No. 2 seed despite a throwing-arm injury to QB Carson Beck. But what else was the committee supposed to do? No. 9 Tennessee at No. 8 Ohio State , Dec. 21. The Buckeyes (losses to Oregon, Michigan) got home field over the Volunteers (losses to Arkansas, Georgia) in a matchup of programs with two of the biggest stadiums in football. The winner faces ... Oregon in the Rose Bowl. Feels like that matchup should come in the semifinals or later. Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. Sign up here . That’s from Edge 1 to Defensive Player of the Year. I’m the guy. That runs through me,” Garrett said. Nothing he’s not used to. pic.twitter.com/ejgoYPGOQS Well, the Browns' social media team decided to get in a little dig of their own on Friday. The Browns posted the above quote with the caption ‘nothing he’s not used to,' which refers to the post Watt made on X following his loss to Garrett in the 2023 Defensive Player of the Year voting. Within the Steelers-Browns, the rivalry between Garrett and Watt has heated up, but there is no doubt that Garrett got the better of Watt on Thursday with three sacks while Watt was limited all night to just three pressures amid a solid performance by the Browns' offense to put up 24 points. Indiana aims to limit turnovers vs. MinnesotaSOUTHFIELD – The Detroit Country Day Yellowjackets scored on four consecutive shots late in the second period on route to a 5-2 win over the Utica Eisenhower Eagles Saturday evening. Eventually, Eisenhower got the lead when they scored off the opening face off of the second period with Troy Aliotta racing in and picking the top right corner for a power play goal and a 1-0 lead for the Eagles. But Eisenhower kept taking penalties, giving the Yellowjackets a series of power plays in the second period, including two long five-on-three chances. Eventually, Country Day cashed in the fifth power play of the period and sixth of the game, tying the score 1-1 on a redirect in the slot by Parker Hopkins with 6:23 remaining in the period. “I think certainly, we killed off the first few, but you can’t keep going to that well. If you play with fire soon or later you’re going to get burned,” Eagles head coach David Erwin said. “I thought five-on-five we matched up well with them and carried the play early on five-on-five. But we gave an opportunity second period, too many penalties to get back into it, and their feet got moving and we couldn’t stop them after that.” Hopkins’s goal touched off a flurry of action as the teams combined to score five goals in a span of just over four minutes — all but one of the goals by Country Day. Ryder Novock scored on a pair of breakaways — one even strength an one shorthanded –- and Rylan Crozier added a goal in transition, snapping a shot in off the goalpost with 2:08 left in the period. When the dust settled, the Yellowjackets took a 4-2 lead into the third period. The Eagles would never recover on the scoreboard, though they threw everything they could at Country Day goalie Bonner Upshaw in the third period. Upshaw was brilliant in the opening few minutes as Eisenhower mustered 10 shots on goal in the first five minutes of the period and Upshaw had to make his toughest saves of the game to keep the score at 4-2. The Eagles would outshoot the Yellowjackets 39-29 but struggled to beat Upshaw, who turned in an excellent performance, making 37 saves in the Country Day net. “Bonner was outstanding, one of his best games. With the team that we have, we’re going to have to get goaltending like that, and if he plays like that we’re going to have a chance to win many games. He was very solid, very square, very quiet, and I think he’s gaining confidence,” Country Day head coach Frank Novock said. “He’s put the time and work in, and it’s good for him.” Ryder Novock would eventually get his hat trick in the third period and finished with a four point night. Crozier also finished with a four point game including assist on all three of Novock’s goals. Farr finished with a goal and assist for Eisenhower and his line with Aliotta and Ryan Dex was the best line of the night for the Eagles. Detroit Country Day (2-5) will be at the Division 3 Showcase next weekend in Grayling where they will play Bay Reps on Friday and Jeffers on Saturday. “Any win right now for us is good. We’re a young team, and we need to get the experience to learn how to win. We’ve had a couple games where we’ve had a chance and we haven’t been able to close them out. Today, we just played three solid periods. You learn to lose, and you learn to win. And as young as we are, hopefully we took some steps in the right direction tonight,” coach Novock said. “I thought we worked very hard tonight, and that’s how we have to play in order to have any chance of success. Our best players were our best players tonight; and our role guys, when they were called upon, they did an outstanding job. It was just a total team effort tonight,” he added. Eisenhower (4-2) will be back in action on Tuesday when they face St. Clair Shores Unified in a Macomb Area Conference crossover game. “I thought our boys did compete well. I thought they played well enough to win today and just didn’t get it done. So we’re back at practice Monday to get back on the right track and come out Tuesday ready to go,” Erwin said.GSA Capital Partners LLP Invests $238,000 in Silgan Holdings Inc. (NYSE:SLGN)
