Reviews functioning of Info Department: CM For Using Digital Space For Targeted Campaigns Jammu: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today chaired a comprehensive review meeting of the Information Department at the Civil Secretariat here. The meeting assessed department’s performance and deliberated on matters requiring improvement to enhance efficiency and outreach of the Information department. President-elect Donald Trump announced Friday he would work to end the "inconvenient" custom of moving clocks forward one hour every spring, which he said was imposing an unnecessary financial burden on the United States. "The Republican Party will use its best efforts to eliminate Daylight Saving Time, which has a small but strong constituency, but shouldn't! Daylight Saving Time (DST) is inconvenient, and very costly to our Nation," Trump posted on his website, Truth Social. DST was adopted by the federal government during World War I but was unpopular with farmers rushing to get produce to morning markets, and was quickly abolished. Many states experimented with their own versions but it wasn't reintroduced nationwide until 1967. The Democratic-controlled US Senate advanced a bill in 2022 that, like Trump's plan, would bring an end to the twice-yearly changing of clocks, in favor of a "new, permanent standard time." But The Sunshine Protection Act called for the opposite switch -- moving permanently to DST rather than eliminating it -- to usher in brighter evenings, and fewer journeys home in the dark for school children and office workers. The bill never made it to President Joe Biden's desk, as it was not taken up in the Republican-led House. It had been introduced in 2021 by a Republican, Florida Senator Marco Rubio, who is about to join the incoming Trump administration as secretary of state. He said studies had shown a permanent DST could benefit the economy. Either way, changing to one permanent time would put an end to Americans pushing their clocks forward in the spring, then setting them back an hour in the fall. Colloquially the practice is referred to as "springing" forward and "falling" back. The clamor has increased in recent years to make DST permanent especially among politicians and lobbyists from the Northeast, where frigid conditions are normal in the early winter mornings. "It's really straightforward. Cutting back on the sun during the fall and winter is a drain on the American people and does little to nothing to help them," Rubio said in a statement ahead of the vote. "It's time we retire this tired tradition." Rubio said the United States sees an increase in heart attacks and road accidents in the week that follows the changing of the clocks. "It's very important that we mark this day, and we don't let those lives go unremembered. And we also take this opportunity to remember and think of and mourn for those who we've lost in Renfrew County as well," said Erika Mullins, a coordinator with Ending Violence Alliance (EVA) Renfrew County. Among those in attendance Friday was Deborah Kasdorff, who spent a career working with victims of violence. She says she hasn't missed a Dec. 6 vigil since the tragedy. "I just appreciate an opportunity to be with kindred spirits and to think back on the women who died, some of whom were clients of mine, whom I knew personally," she says of the names of Renfrew County women read aloud. "I can picture some of the women I knew. I see their faces. I think it's very powerful to hear the information that's read about each one of them." At the Women's Monument in Petawawa, the names of 27 women from Renfrew County who have been killed in gender-based violence are etched. "Those are the ones, obviously, that hit hard," says Petawawa Coun. Lisa Coutu. "I think those are people that we're missing. We're actively missing them, and that's something that brings everything home." Notably, the triple murder of Carol Culleton, Anastasia Kuzyk, and Nathalie Warmerdam in 2015 was the catalyst for a coroner's inquest which sought to end intimate partner violence. The inquest produced 86 recommendations, led by a call for the province to declare intimate partner violence an epidemic. Since June 2022, dozens of municipalities across Ontario have made the declaration, including the County of Renfrew and City of Ottawa. But many are frustrated by the inaction of the provincial government to make the declaration. "I'm not sure what they're waiting for. I'm not sure how many women and gender diverse people have to die in order for them to take it seriously," said Mullins. "I think the issue has maybe gotten too confused for them," says Coutu. "It's not a question of these definitions; what is an epidemic? We're talking about something that's making people die and we can identify it." After a far-right pro-Russia candidate secured a surprise lead in Romania's presidential election Monday, the eastern European NATO member is bracing for a high-stakes parliamentary vote on Sunday, amid fears it could bring about a strategic shift in the country. Calin Georgescu was in pole position with almost 23 percent after the first round of voting, a political earthquake in the country of 19 million people that has so far resisted nationalist appeals that have gained traction in Hungary and Slovakia. His victory ahead of centre-right mayor Elena Lasconi -- who scored 19.18 percent -- ended the hopes of Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu to compete for the presidency in the December runoff. After coming third at 19.15, Ciolacu said his Social Democratic Party (PSD) won't challenge the narrow result, and announced his resignation as party leader. Experts say the far right's surprise success could affect the parliamentary elections later this week, and even influence the chances of forming a future government. In the runoff ballot on December 8, Lasconi will face Georgescu, a NATO critic who in the past expressed his admiration for Russian President Vladimir Putin.
