39 fun events happening in Tucson this weekendTORONTO — Canada's main stock index lost nearly 250 points Thursday, led by weakness in energy and base metals, while U.S. markets also fell. The S&P/TSX composite index closed down 246.99 points at 25,410.71. In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 234.44 points at 43,914.12. The S&P 500 index was down 32.94 points at 6,051.25, while the Nasdaq composite was down 132.05 points at 19,902.84. “I think the markets had some time to now digest where rates could be going into the near term,” said Adelaide Chiu, portfolio manager, vice-president and head of responsible investing at NEI Investments. On Wednesday, the Bank of Canada announced an outsized half-percentage point interest rate cut and signalled it would slow the pace of cuts going forward. “With the policy rate now substantially lower, we anticipate a more gradual approach to monetary policy if the economy evolves broadly as expected," said Bank of Canada governor Tiff Macklem. And in the U.S., the monthly report on consumer inflation came in largely as expected, helping set the stage for a quarter-point cut by the U.S. Federal Reserve next week. Globally, interest rate cuts are moderating as inflation reaches targets, Chiu said. On Thursday, the European Central Bank cut rates by a quarter of a percentage point while the Swiss National Bank cut by half a percentage point. A year ago, market watchers couldn’t have predicted just how much equities would rise in 2024, said Chiu. “Earnings growth itself has been quite modest, but the market has done very well,” she said. “It’s really a movement of the interest rates that has really impacted valuations for a lot of these companies in the market.” Now, the news is largely focused on the incoming U.S. president and whether his threatened tariffs will come to pass, Chiu said. The Canadian dollar traded for 70.48 cents US compared with 70.65 cents US on Wednesday. The January crude oil contract was down 27 cents at US$70.02 per barrel and the January natural gas contract was up eight cents at US$3.46 per mmBTU. The February gold contract was down US$47.30 at US$2,709.40 an ounce and the March copper contract was down a penny at US$4.20 a pound. -- With files from The Associated Press This report by The Canadian Press was first published Dec. 12, 2024. (AP) — Less than a month after winning the World Series, the Los Angeles Dodgers are spending big again to add one of baseball’s best pitchers to their star-studded roster. Blake Snell and the Dodgers agreed to a $182 million, five-year contract, according to a person with direct knowledge of the negotiations. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Tuesday night because the deal is subject to a successful physical. The two-time Cy Young Award winner broke the news personally by posting a photo of himself on social media in a Dodgers uniform — No. 7. Snell gets a $52 million signing bonus, payable on Jan. 20, and annual salaries of $26 million, of which $13 million each year will be deferred. Because Snell is a Washington state resident, the signing bonus will not be subject to California income tax. Snell would join two-way star Shohei Ohtani and fellow Japanese right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto atop Los Angeles’ rotation, giving the Dodgers the first megadeal this offseason following Ohtani’s $700 million, 10-year contract and Yamamoto’s $325 million, 12-year agreement last offseason. Ohtani didn’t pitch this year while recovering from right elbow surgery but is expected back on the mound in 2025. He won his third MVP award — first in the National League — following a huge season at the plate exclusively as a designated hitter. Yamamoto went 7-2 with a 3.00 ERA in 18 starts as a rookie, then won twice in four October outings. Down to three healthy starting pitchers during the postseason, Los Angeles overcame a string of injuries to its projected rotation in winning the franchise’s second World Series title in five years. Right-handers Jack Flaherty and Walker Buehler then became free agents this fall, creating more voids on the staff. But the addition of Snell would fill a large one at the top with a legitimate ace. Snell’s $36.4 million average salary would rank as the fifth-highest among active deals next year behind Ohtani ($70 million), Philadelphia pitcher Zack Wheeler ($42 million), New York Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge ($40 million) and Texas pitcher Jacob deGrom ($37 million). Among expired contracts, it also was exceeded by pitchers Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander (both $43.33 million) under deals they agreed to with the New York Mets. ESPN first reported the details of Snell’s contract. Earlier this month, Snell opted out of his deal with San Francisco to become a free agent for the second consecutive offseason after he was slowed by injuries during his lone year with the Giants. The left-hander agreed in March to a $62 milli on, two-year contract that inc luded a $17 million signing bonus payable on Jan. 15, 2026, a $15 million salary for 2024 and a $30 million salary for 2025, of which $15 million would have been deferred and payable on July 1, 2027. Snell, who turns 32 next week, went 5-3 with a 3.12 ERA in 20 starts this year, throwing a no-hitter at Cincinnati on Aug. 2 for one of only 16 individual shutouts in the major leagues this season. He struck out 145 and walked 44 in 104 innings. He was sidelined between April 19 and May 22 by a strained left adductor and between June 2 and July 9 by a strained left groin. Snell won Cy Young Awards in 2018 with Tampa Bay and 2023 with San Diego. He is 76 -58 with a 3.19 ERA in nine seasons with the Rays (2016-20), Padres (2021-23) and Giants. Because he turned down a qualifying offer from San Diego last November, the Giants were not eligible to give Snell another one and won’t receive draft-pick compensation. Los Angeles expects All-Star right-hander Tyler Glasnow and three-time Cy Young Award winner Clayton Kershaw back in the rotation next year. Other starting candidates if healthy include right-handers Dustin May, Tony Gonsolin and Bobby Miller. Ohtani is coming off right elbow surgery in September 2023 and left shoulder surgery on Nov. 5. Glasnow didn’t pitch after Aug. 11 because of right elbow tendinitis. Kershaw, who turns 37 in March, had foot and knee surgeries on Nov. 7. He declined a $10 milli on player option in favor of free agency, but is expected to return to Los Angeles. May is coming back from Tommy John surgery in July 2023 and from an operation this past July to repair a tear in his esophagus. Gonsolin spent 2024 rehabbing from Tommy John surgery. Miller, an 11-game winner as a rookie in 2023, was sidelined early this season by shoulder inflammation. He struggled to a 2-4 record with an 8.52 ERA in 13 big league starts and ended the regular season in the minors. Yamamoto was sidelined by right triceps tightness between June 15 and Sept. 10, then returned and went 2-0 with a 3.86 ERA in four postseason starts.

[Sławomir Sierakowski] Has Angela Merkel no shame?Chinese Fintech Stock Qifu Hits Buy Point As Profit Growth AcceleratesSean Payton knows Garett Bolles’ game well at this point. He just didn’t know his age. That, of course, was no hindrance to Denver signing the left tackle on Thursday. Payton, though, insisted he didn’t realize Bolles was already in his 30s. “The way he’s played, he’s available, he’s in incredible shape. I didn’t realize he’s (32),” Payton said Friday. “(General manager George Paton) and I were talking. I just had never paid attention to that.” Payton, naturally, pays close attention to his offensive line’s production. He’s a believer in a team being built from the inside out. And Denver now has a key piece secured. “He does a great job in taking care of his body and then besides that, the most important thing, is he’s one of the premier pass-blockers in our league,” Payton said. “He stays in front of his man. There’s times where we’ve got to help elsewhere and that’s hard to find. He’s excited about it and we are as well. “It’s much deserved.” The Broncos will be without cornerback Riley Moss for a second straight game because of a right MCL injury he suffered against Las Vegas. The team ruled Moss, a second-year player out of Iowa, out officially on Friday after he hadn’t practiced all week. “We’ve got plenty of depth on the back end and we just have to understand who we’re playing and how we’re playing this game,” Payton said Friday after the team allowed 497 passing yards to Jameis Winston and Cleveland before its bye week. “I think we made a pretty good point of that.” The question will be whether Denver continues with veteran Levi Wallace on the outside opposite Pat Surtain II or goes . One of the interesting sub-plots to Sunday’s critical game is that both teams are coming off their bye week. That means each side can expect more of the unexpected given the extra preparation time. “You’ll see some things, wrinkles, but you’ve got to defend the tape,” Payton said of his approach to planning. “I’ve known (Colts defensive coordinator Gus Bradley) for a long time, so we’ve got this year’s defense, last year’s defense. How much do you want in the cut-ups? If there’s a play we remember running against Seattle when he was there or Jacksonville. “Now, offensively, you’re defending the offense and the offense with (quarterback Anthony Richardson). That’s different than the offense with Joe Flacco. And so he’s a run threat and that becomes more challenging. There’s a different challenge with it. “You’ve got to defend the tape and what you’ve been seeing and then handle the adjustments.” The Broncos have been rotating three running backs in Javonte Williams, Jaleel McLaughlin and rookie Audric Estime. McLaughlin had a season-high 14 carries for 84 yards plus one catch against Cleveland. Each of the three backs has led Denver in carries over the past four games. Williams has been in a rut, totaling minus-1 yards on 12 carries the past two games. “All of them need something to get going in a rhythm,” Payton said. “They’re used to playing. So it’s hard to evaluate Javonte or Audric on four touches. So we’ll keep working through that.”

Euro zone business activity took a surprisingly sharp turn for the worse this month as the bloc’s dominant services industry contracted and manufacturing sank deeper into recession, a survey showed on Friday. HCOB’s preliminary composite euro zone Purchasing Managers’ Index, compiled by S&P Global, sank to a 10-month low of 48.1 in November, below the 50 mark separating growth from contraction. A Reuters poll had predicted no change from October’s 50.0. “The November PMI is another wake-up call for euro zone policymakers that the economy continues to show signs of weakness,” said Bert Colijn at ING. “New business is weakening again for both manufacturing and services with export orders in particular being down sharply as the euro zone economy battles weak demand from abroad.” The data pushed euro zone government bond yields lower and knocked the euro EUR= to its lowest against the dollar since December 2022 as investors bet on faster rate cuts from the European Central Bank. The central bank has cut rates three times this year to 3.25% amid increasing concerns about the bloc’s lacklustre growth outlook. Money markets expect another quarter-point cut next month and a further 125 basis points of cuts next year that would take the main rate to 1.75% by end 2025. A composite new business index fell to 46.6 from 47.9, its lowest reading this year, suggesting no imminent improvement. The economic downturn accelerated in both Germany and France with business activity falling at the quickest rate since early this year, the survey showed. Political uncertainty in the bloc’s two biggest economies may be partly to blame. Germany’s three-way coalition collapsed earlier this month, leaving the country in political limbo until snap elections in February, while in France a far-right party is threatening to topple Prime Minister Michel Barnier’s fragile coalition government over a dispute about the 2025 budget. Germany’s economy grew less than previously estimated in the third quarter, the statistics office reported on Friday, in further bad news for a country set to be the worst performer among the Group of Seven rich democracies this year. Adding to the gloomy outlook, German industry expects a 3% fall in production in 2024, a third year of decline, with no recovery in sight for 2025, the country’s BDI industry body said on Friday. To boot, President-elect Donald Trump’s proposed trade tariffs will have a significant effect on the euro zone economy in the coming years, according to a strong majority of economists in a Reuters poll. A PMI index of euro zone services, which had been offsetting the decline among manufacturers, fell to a 10-month low of 49.2 from 51.6. The poll forecast was for no change. Firms did increase headcount again but were less optimistic about the year ahead. The business expectations index fell to a two-year low of 55.0 from 59.9. The manufacturing PMI index fell to 45.2 from 46.0, confounding expectations for no change. An index measuring output, which feeds into the composite PMI, dropped to 45.1 from 45.8. That was despite factories cutting their charges for a third month and at a steeper pace than in October. The output prices index dropped to 47.9 from 48.2. In Britain, outside the European Union, business output shrank for the first time in more than a year and tax increases in the new government’s first budget hit hiring and investment plans, its PMI showed, a fresh setback for Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s push for economic growth. British retail sales fell much more than expected in October, according to official data on Friday that added to signs of a loss of momentum in the economy. Joe Burrow is no longer talking about the playoffs after another loss by the high-scoring BengalsJoe Burrow is no longer talking about the playoffs after another loss by the high-scoring BengalsCherry Hills Village, Dec. 13, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Cherry Hills Village, Colorado - Front Range Pharmacy, a locally owned and operated retail pharmacy in Englewood, is gearing up to celebrate 5 years in business this spring. For the pharmacist-owner and operator, Michael Scruggs, this calls for a pause to reflect and be thankful. "Opening Front Range during the peak of a global pandemic was not how I pictured my dream of owning a pharmacy coming true", said Scruggs, "this anniversary truly feels special and my staff and I cannot express our gratitude to our community enough". Since its founding in April 2020, the pharmacy has consistently evolved to meet the needs of the Denver metro community, providing personalized and efficient care. While its larger counterparts seemed to have struggled, Front Range Pharmacy seems to have found its stride and is proud to have just launched its new website highlighting its made-from-scratch variety of services. The updated website underscores Front Range Pharmacy's dedication to streamlining its offerings and improving accessibility for its customers. These services include single-trip prescription management, custom compounding, long-term care solutions, immunizations, prepacked medication boxes, and home delivery options. The rebranding initiative reflects the company's mission to enhance its role as a trusted healthcare partner and further solidify what its surrounding community has come to know very well - the best pharmacies are owned by pharmacists. "I think what makes Front Range Pharmacy different is our "intent". I'm excited to be your pharmacist and do this work for you and my goal is that when you walk in, you feel that. If we start that way, then the difference is mostly made" Scruggs added when asked what makes his pharmacy stand out. "We aren't a prefabricated box dropped into your neighborhood - we are a small business that listens and responds to its community." It seems that most Americans agree, as a recent study revealed that customers are being driven to independent pharmacies due to disappointment from chain drug stores and fear of their mail-order options not being reliable. A key highlight of Front Range Pharmacy's services is its compounding capabilities, allowing the creation of custom medications tailored to individual patient needs. This personalized approach is especially beneficial for patients with unique medical requirements, those with allergies to certain ingredients in their prescriptions, or in people needing hormone replacement therapy at various stages in life. Additionally, the pharmacy offers DayPacks, an innovative solution for organizing medications into convenient, easy-to-manage packets. These packets, made from biodegradable cellulose, help patients stay on track with their medication regimens. Completely free and customizable, the staff at Front Range say this solution has made life easier for many of its patients or caretakers. The pharmacy's long-term care department focuses on assisting caregivers in homes or facilities by ensuring that residents receive their medications accurately and on time. This service benefits individuals aging in place, those with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and residents in assisted living or memory care facilities. Another standout feature is Front Range Pharmacy's home delivery service, available to patients within five miles of the pharmacy. For just $4.00 per delivery, this service provides a convenient option for those unable to visit the pharmacy in person. Patients in need of assistance can inquire about a free delivery application for eligible cases. "Delivery is definitely our most asked-for service and we are happy to finally bring it back in full force," added Scruggs. The updated website also highlights routine and seasonal immunizations, ensuring patients can access necessary vaccinations in a comfortable and professional setting. As the pharmacy expands its service lines , Front Range Pharmacy continues to focus on providing compassionate, patient-centered care. The rebranding effort not only emphasizes its core offerings but also reinforces its commitment to using technology and innovation to improve patient outcomes. "We're excited to continue growing as a pharmacy and I really feel like we are just getting started," added Scruggs. "I think that people in the Denver metro want something that treats them uniquely and we hope to always support our patients in ways that actually focus on their health goals."
